GameGenreGrade
Rocket LeagueRacing / Sports (Soccer / Basketball / Hockey / Misc.)A
tl;drRocket League has players using cars to play soccer, hockey, and basketball, and it is an absolute blast to play. It still runs smoothly on the Switch, albeit with reduced resolution, and it’s loaded with options and a wealth of multiplayer features. What’s more, the change to free-to-play has made it even easier to take the plunge, as it not only removes the entry fee and the need to subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online for online play, but it actually has less monetization now than when I first reviewed it. Unless you have this game on another platform, you absolutely should have it on your Nintendo Switch.
FortniteCompilation / Open-World Third-Person ShooterA-
tl;dr Fortnite’s early days may have been as a Free-to-Play online multiplayer-focused “battle royale”-style Third-Person Shooter, but it has since blossomed into a massive game platform with a wide variety of different game types to enjoy, and just about all of them are fantastic. It’s intimidating, poorly-organized, confusing, and not very user-friendly to newer players, and the Nintendo Switch version has some ugly performance issues that make it one of the worst ways to play the game, but none of that changes that this is still a truly must-play game.
Guardian TalesTop-Down Action-RPGA-
tl;drGuardian Tales is a free-to-play Zelda-style Top-Down Action-RPG with fun gameplay, lots of variety, an appealing presentation, and great writing with a superb sense of humor. The only thing that detracts from this otherwise outstanding game is the overbearing presence of the countless ways this game wants to catch you up in its microtransactions. However, if you can stomach all the gacha mechanics, it’s well worth a look – everything else about this game is outstanding.
PaladinsFirst-Person ShooterA-
tl;drPaladins is a Free-to-Play online-focused team-based First-Person Shooter with a heavy emphasis on its wide cast of memorable and unique characters with different abilities, comparable to Overwatch. This is an excellent port of a fantastic game, and while I still slightly prefer Overwatch, Paladins has a lot going in its favor, such as its silky-smooth 60FPS framerates and its customizable loadouts. If you’re looking for a great online First-Person Shooter on the Nintendo Switch, you should definitely give this game a try.
Pinball FX3Compilation / PinballA-
tl;drPinball FX3 is a free-to-play Compilation that includes two free Pinball tables, Sorcerer’s Lair and Fish Tales, and the ability to buy others via paid DLC. This is a well-crafted collection of Pinball games, and I think it’s the best of the free-to-play offerings. Even if you’re not a big Pinball fan, if you own a Nintendo Switch you might as well get this since it’s free. And if you are a Pinball fan, you still have some other good tables to peruse via paid DLC, though unfortunately not as many as there are on other platforms (no Marvel content? What gives!?).
Asphalt 9: LegendsArcade RacingB+
tl;drAsphalt 9: Legends is a Free-To-Play Arcade Racer that’s bogged down by all sorts of nasty microtransactions, which is a shame because the game underneath all of that is one of the best racing games on the Switch. I’d argue that the microtransactions can be worked around, and since the game is free to play, you should definitely at least give it a try – on balance, I’d argue that the game is definitely worth the hassle.
Gems of WarPuzzle / RPGB+
tl;drGems of War is a free-to-play Puzzle/RPG hybrid much like its predecessor Puzzle Quest, but Gems streamlines the gameplay, gives it some nice nuances, and elevates the multiplayer by having players challenge each other indirectly, giving them the freedom to choose how tough an opponent they want to take on. The microtransactions here aren’t too bothersome, and the only complaints I have are a lack of local multiplayer and the terrible story. However, the Puzzle gameplay here is top-notch, and fans of Puzzle games should consider this one an absolute must-have on the Switch.
HexceedPuzzleB+
tl;drHexceed is a free-to-play Puzzle game that plays similarly to Minesweeper, but with more variety, and game design that never requires the player to guess where it is and isn’t safe to click. The amount of content included here for free is mind-boggling, and there are no microtransactions – only paid expansion content once you exhaust the over 470 levels included for free. And while the presentation may look dull, the gameplay here is absolutely superb. If you are a Puzzle game fan on Nintendo Switch, you should absolutely download this game immediately.
Overwatch 2First-Person ShooterB+
tl;drOverwatch 2 is an online-focused team-based First-Person Shooter that makes some small changes to the original game and brings it into the realm of free-to-play, but otherwise, this feels like a glorified update to the original game rather than a new game in its own right. And it’s hard to complain about that – Overwatch is great, and being free means that more players can play it now. However, it feels somewhat dishonest to label this as a sequel when in so many ways it feels like an update to the first game rather than something separate and new.
Pinball FXCompilation / PinballB+
tl;drPinball FX, like its predecessor Pinball FX3, is a free-to-play Compilation, this time including three free Pinball tables: Sorcerer’s Lair, Fish Tales, and Wild West Rampage. It’s a solid, polished game and it’s nice to get three tables at no cost, but the lack of compatibility with past DLC is disappointing, and otherwise this seems like little more than a rehash. If you enjoy Pinball, it’s still worth getting because there’s some great gameplay here at no cost, but it’s still hard not to be at least a bit disappointed.
Pinball MCompilation / PinballB+
tl;drPinball M is a free-to-play Pinball game with a focus on tables with an M rating, usually based on a Horror theme. The gameplay is excellent, but it’s really the presentation that sets this game apart as something unique among numerous other Pinball games on Nintendo Switch.
Pool BlitzSports (Pool)B+
tl;dr Pool Blitz is a free-to-play Pool game that offers surprising quality given the free price tag. The monetization here is pretty gross, but if you can tolerate that, I think you’ll find this to be a solid game of Pool, and the game’s signature Blitz mode is a fast-paced and frenetic delight that’s worth checking out in its own right. This game is absolutely one you’ll want to try if you’re even mildly interested in Pool.
Sky: Children of the Light3D ExplorationB+
tl;drSky: Children of the Light is a free-to-play 3D Exploration game that follows directly in the footsteps of the developer’s prior game, Journey. While it never quite reaches the level of simple elegance or the emotional heights of that legendary game, Sky is nevertheless an audiovisual masterpiece and an experience that every Nintendo Switch owner should have, especially with the price tag of “free”.
SmiteMOBAB+
tl;drSmite is a MOBA that has players taking the role of one of over 100 gods or mythological heroes. The strategic action here is solid, the monetization is pretty fair, and overall this is an excellent game for anyone curious about the genre. At least… as long as you don’t mind looking up some of the finer points of how this game works.
YouTubeVideo ApplicationB+
tl;drYouTube is a streaming Video Application for watching user-created videos (as well as access to your MoviesAnywhere account and associated content). The Nintendo Switch version of the app doesn’t do anything particularly extraordinary, but it works just fine and the wealth of content it allows access to all for free makes it hard to complain about. You probably already have YouTube on countless other devices, but the Nintendo Switch version is still well worth having.
Color ZenPuzzleB
tl;drColor Zen is a Free-To-Play puzzle game that’s the best kind of Free-To-Play. It’s a simple, straightforward puzzle game with a clean design and you get a lot of content without being hounded by microtransactions. It’s just a pity it doesn’t play as well in docked mode as it does in portable mode.
Eternal: The Card GameCollectible Card GameB
tl;drEternal is a free-to-play Collectable Card Game that feels like it fits somewhere between Magic: The Gathering and Hearthstone. This is a decent port of the game, and those interested in the genre will find this to be a welcoming title, with a good amount of free content and solid gameplay. Definitely worth a look.
Faaast PenguinRacing Game / 3D PlatformerB
tl;drFaaast Penguin is a family-friendly free-to-play online-only multiplayer-focused Racing Game with 3D Platformer elements that has players sliding down courses as a penguin. The gameplay here is both deep and accessible, with a good sense of speed and frenetic fun, monetization that isn’t overly-burdensome, and the performance on Nintendo Switch is decent. I would have liked more track variety, but overall this is a Racing Game that’s definitely worth downloading and trying out.
Prime World: DefendersTower DefenseB
tl;drPrime World: Defenders is a Tower Defense game with a Collectable Card Game mechanic that results in some grinding being a part of the game, for better or worse. In any case, the game looks great and plays pretty well. Fans of Tower Defense games should definitely give it a look.
Retrograde Arena2-Stick ShooterB
tl;drRetrograde Arena is a free-to-play multiplayer arena-based Two-Stick Shooter where players must push enemies into red walls with gunfire rather than damaging them directly. The game’s unique physics take some getting used to, but once you do you’ll find some surprising depth, and the free price tag makes this a game you should absolutely try.
RPG Maker MV PlayerTurn-Based RPG ApplicationB
tl;drRPG Maker MV Player is a free Application to play games created by RPG Maker MV, allowing players to search through games that others have made and enjoy them at no cost. While it still suffers many of the same issues as RPG Maker MV, and there’s plenty of trash games to sort through, the occasional gem you’ll find will make that free price tag well worth it.
Super Animal Royale2-Stick ShooterB
tl;drSuper Animal Royale is a free-to-play game that combines the Two-Stick Shooter with battle royale-style online multiplayer play, and it does a pretty good job balancing those two elements. There’s definitely room for improvement in numerous areas, and it feels like the game could use more content, but this is overall a solid entry in the genre worth giving a try.
WarframeThird-Person ActionB
tl;drWarframe is a Free-To-Play Third-Person Action game that actually does the “Free-To-Play” part right, and provides a good multiplayer online experience for up to four players, albeit one that’s disorienting for newcomers. However, the Switch is not the most ideal place to play this game, and if you can play it on another platform, you’re better off playing it there.
Disney SpeedstormKart RacingB-
tl;dr Disney Speedstorm is a free-to-play Kart Racing game featuring high-tech races with courses and racers inspired by classic Disney franchises. I have some issues with the microtransactions here, the lack of courses, the rubber-banding, and the Nintendo Switch version definitely suffers a graphical downgrade from other versions of the game… but despite those numerous flaws, this is still a wonderfully fun, fast-paced racing game with an outstanding presentation and a great soundtrack. As long as you can tolerate this game’s flaws, I think you’ll find it to be a great addition to your Racing game collection.
F-Zero 99Futuristic RacingB-
tl;drF-Zero 99 is a fun take on the Futuristic Racing series that takes inspiration from the original Super Nintendo game, but expands on it by having 99 online players racing against each other on the same track. It’s extremely frenetic, and the crowded tracks can make for some frustration, but it’s also pretty fun and unique. Plus, since it is available at no additional cost to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, anyone who enjoys Racing games and already pays for the service would do well to give this game a try.
Fantasy StrikeFighting GameB-
tl;drFantasy Strike is a free-to-play Fighting game that strips the genre down to its basics in a way that’s really refreshing and inspired take on how the genre works, with a solid presentation and some really inventive characters. Having said that, the online play here is a mess, and the lack of features in the free version of the game really limits how much you’ll want to play it unless you buy into the game’s expansion content. It’s still well worth giving a try, but keep your expectations in check.
HuluVideo ApplicationB-
tl;drHulu is a streaming Video Application for watching TV shows and movies. The Nintendo Switch version seems to lack the ability to download content, and there’s no touchscreen support, but otherwise it works fine, and has some great content… if you pay for a subscription.
Island SaverFirst-Person Shooter / EducationalB-
tl;drIsland Saver is a Family-Friendly Free-to-Play First-Person Shooter that has you using a vacuum gun to suck up litter and spray water to clean up pollution. It has a surprisingly polished presentation, especially given that the game seems nearly free from monetization, and the game’s Educational elements act as a nice (albeit abstract) kid-friendly introduction to environmentalism as well as finance and the economy. Older players may find that the game lacks challenge and is filled with repetitive busywork, but for younger players, this is well worth getting.
Puzzle GalaxyPuzzleB-
tl;dr Puzzle Galaxy is a family-friendly free-to-play Jigsaw Puzzle game with some good art (the photographic stuff, at least), a calming soundtrack, good controls, and the monetization is really quite reasonable. There are a few flaws here and there, namely limitations that prevent you from playing the way you may want. However, for the free price tag, this is definitely worth a look, especially if you crave a decent Jigsaw Puzzle game on Nintendo Switch.
Rogue CompanyThird-Person ShooterB-
tl;drRogue Company is a Free-to-Play online-focused team-based Third-Person Shooter that pulls elements from a lot of other team-based online games like Counter-Strike, Fortnite, and Overwatch. However, it integrates these elements well and the core gameplay here is excellent. What it currently lacks is content. Thankfully, there’s a pretty good likelihood it’ll be getting that content eventually, but for now, this is a game that’s a bit limited.
Stern Pinball ArcadeCompilation / PinballB-
tl;drStern Pinball Arcade is a free-to-play Compilation that includes one free Pinball table, Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein, and the ability to buy others via paid DLC. Even if you’re not a big Pinball fan, if you own a Nintendo Switch you might as well get this since it’s free (unless you also own The Pinball Arcade, which contains the same free table). And if you are a Pinball fan, you still have some other good tables to peruse via paid DLC, though unfortunately not as many as were previously available.
Super Bomberman R OnlineArcadeB-
tl;drSuper Bomberman R Online, while still an Arcade-style game with the same basic mechanics as most games in the series, manages to have a really inventive approach to the classic series formula, turning it into a 64-player online Battle Royale-style game. And while the lack of local multiplayer is disappointing, and the frequent loading screens are a major annoyance, the free price tag makes this game a no-brainer. Definitely give it a try.
Tennis 1920sSports (Tennis)B-
tl;drTennis 1920s (first released on mobile devices as World of Tennis: Roaring ’20s) is a free-to-play Tennis game inexplicably set in the 1920s. The game lacks polish, has buggy menus, is missing multiplayer play, and the unusual controls take some getting used to, but once you do get used to them, this is a surprisingly enjoyable Tennis game, and you can even do away with most of the microtransactions with a one-time $9 purchase. At the very least, fans of Tennis games should definitely try it out for free to see if it’s to their liking.
The Pinball ArcadeCompilation / PinballB-
tl;drPinball Arcade is a free-to-play Compilation that includes one free Pinball table, Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein, and the ability to buy others via paid DLC. Even if you’re not a big Pinball fan, if you own a Nintendo Switch you might as well get this since it’s free. And if you are a Pinball fan, you still have some other good tables to peruse via paid DLC, though unfortunately not as many as were previously available.
Turbo Shot2-Stick ShooterB-
tl;drTurbo Shot is a free-to-play 2-Stick Shooter with a semi-randomized upgrade system and a bright, cartoony presentation. The core gameplay here is pretty fun, especially the enjoyable online deathmatch mode. But this game is severely lacking in options, and has some absolutely nasty monetization, including pay-to-win mechanics. There’s still a lot to like about this game, but it definitely feels like the gameplay was compromised severely for the sake of the microtransactions.
VivitterParty GameB-
tl;drVivitter is a family-friendly free-to-play Party Game that has players competing in minigames that are all a spin on the “get close but don’t go over” concept of “chicken”. Despite the simple concept and some issues with repetitive games and pacing, this is nevertheless a great choice for a game to add to your Party Game list due to its fun and accessible minigames, great sense of humor, and lack of pushy monetization.

$5 and Under

GameGenreGrade
Among UsParty GameA-
tl;drAmong Us is a Party game similar to classic social games like Werewolf and Mafia, where players try to figure out which of the others among them are murderous impostors before it’s too late. The port to Nintendo Switch is quite good, includes cross-play, and has controls I strongly prefer over other versions. The barrier for entry here is still a bit high thanks to the sort of conditions you need to get a proper game going, but the small $5 price tag and the massive amount of fun on offer here when this game really gets going make it more than worth the trouble to round up enough friends to play it properly. If you can manage to do that, this game is an absolute must-play.
and RogerInteractive StoryA-
tl;dr and Roger is an Interactive Story whose story and gameplay I dare not get into too much detail on for fear of spoiling it for you. Just know that the gameplay is wholly in service to the story, which is a moving experience, if a brief one that’s over within an hour or so. However, for only $5, I think this is well worth experiencing, if you don’t mind a story that can be heart-wrenching.
IslandersManagement Sim / PuzzleA-
tl;drIslanders is a family-friendly Management Sim-style game with Puzzle elements that has players placing buildings on procedurally-generated islands. This is a game that boils down the Management Sim genre to an elegant simplicity that makes for a truly compelling experience, and one that is absolutely worth the tiny $5 price tag, even if it could stand to have a little more depth.
Kamitsubaki City EnsembleMusic-RhythmA-
tl;dr Kamitsubaki City Ensemble is a Music-Rhythm game that has some rough spots here and there and a soundtrack of exclusively Vocaloid music that won’t be for everyone, but it features solid lane-based gameplay (with superb optional touchscreen controls) and a whopping 48 songs for only $4. If you enjoy Music-Rhythm games and don’t hate Vocaloid music, this is an absolute no-brainer at that price given the massive value present here.
Pipistrello and the Cursed YoyoTop-Down Action-RPGA-
tl;dr Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo is a Top-Down Action-RPG that follows the traditional 2D Zelda formula but with a yo-yo as its central mechanic, with some really creative uses for it that you gain as you progress. This game isn’t without its flaws, but overall this is a fun and unique take on the Action-RPG genre well worth playing.
Sheepy: A Short AdventurePlatformerA-
tl;dr Sheepy is a Platformer where players take the role of an animated stuffed sheep doll exploring a ruined facility. The visuals, sound design, soundtrack, and worldbuilding are all superb here, and while the platforming gameplay doesn’t do anything revolutionary, it’s still well-made and enjoyable. The biggest flaw I can point to is that it’s all over in under an hour, and I want much more than that. Still, for only $2 this is an absolute steal, and I highly recommend it.
Vampire SurvivorsArcade / RoguelikeA-
tl;drVampire Survivors is an Arcade-style Roguelike game where players automatically attack, and must work their way through thousands of enemies while carefully selecting their upgrades. The game can seem a bit simple and repetitive at first, and the new 4-player co-op mode is a bit of a mixed bag, but overall this is a delightfully compelling Action game, and at $5 it’s an absolute steal. Definitely a must-have for Action fans.
AkaneTop-Down Action / 2-Stick Shooter / ArcadeB+
tl;drAkane is an Arcade-y top-down Action game that has players as a lone woman fighting off the entire Yakuza using only a gun and a sword. It’s a game that channels Kill Bill and John Wick extremely well, with some really fun action. Unfortunately, the game is lacking in variety and progression, but the core gameplay here is phenomenal and well worth playing for fans of Action games.
Batu ta BatuUnlimited Pattern PuzzleB+
tl;drBatu Ta Batu is a Puzzle game that has players combining like-colored squares on a board to accomplish various goals in different game modes. Combining compelling gameplay, a lot of content, some good variety, and a low asking price, this game should be considered a must-have for Puzzle game fans on the Nintendo Switch.
Chico and the Magic Orchards DXPuzzleB+
tl;dr Chico and the Magic Orchards DX is a family-friendly character-based Top-Down puzzle game stylized to look like a Game Boy Color game, where players take the role of a squirrel solving puzzles by pushing around a walnut. The puzzle design and boss design here is phenomenal, and the presentation is pitch-perfect to capture nostalgia. And while there are some irritating control issues, overall this game is an absolute winner, well worth playing.
Couple MakerPuzzleB+
tl;drCouple Maker is a Puzzle game that has players placing tiles to guide characters with the goal of forming color-coded meetings of those characters. It’s lighthearted but with a lot of creativity that went into its puzzle mechanics, and for under $2 there’s a surprising amount of content here. This is a great choice for players looking to add something inexpensive to their Puzzle game library.
Crazy BMX WorldCompilation / Auto-RunnerB+
tl;drCrazy BMX World is a Compilation of the family-friendly Auto-Runner games Bike Rider DX, Bike Rider Dx2: Galaxy, and the previously Japan-only Bike Rider DX3: Time Rider. This Compilation frustratingly forces players to unlock all of its games, doesn’t support Pro Controllers, and lacks the earlier releases’ DLC. However, at $3, this is still an outstanding bargain of a package that contains simple but compelling Auto-Runner gameplay, and anyone who enjoys this sort of game or wants a fun but simple time-waster on the cheap would do well to pick this game up.
Debris Infinity2-Stick ShooterB+
tl;drDebris Infinity is a Two-Stick Shooter that’s like a mash-up of Geometry Wars and Asteroids. It looks good, plays well, and the Slow-Mo feature actually brings something interesting to the table. The game is a bit short on features, but what’s here is top-notch.
DownwellArcade / PlatformerB+
tl;drDownwell is an Arcade-style game with Platforming elements, where you are dropping at high speeds down a well while avoiding enemies. Its simple visuals keep the focus on the fast-paced, addictive gameplay, and even though it’s punishingly difficult, you’ll still want to keep coming back for another attempt.
Find the BalancePuzzleB+
tl;drFind the Balance is a family-friendly physics-based Puzzle game where players must stack numerous objects without them falling. While this game doesn’t have the nice presentation or some of the features of Art of Balance, it makes up for it with a good variety of game modes, including an excellent Endless mode. If you’re looking for a good, inexpensive Puzzle game, this is well worth trying.
HexologicPuzzleB+
tl;drHexologic is a family-friendly Puzzle game that has players placing dots in hexagonal tiles to add up to line totals surrounding the tiles. The gameplay is simple but compelling, and the presentation is excellent with a wonderful calming soundtrack. For the low asking price of $3, this game is an excellent addition to any Puzzle gamer’s collection.
HextonesPuzzleB+
tl;drHextones is a Puzzle game where players place hexagonal tiles trying to fit them as tightly as possible while matching their colors and symbols. This game features simple, compelling gameplay and a wonderfully calming presentation, and while there’s a disappointing lack of options and features, the $3 price tag makes this a no-brainer for Puzzle game fans.
Inferno 22-Stick ShooterB+
tl;drInferno 2 is a straightforward 2-Stick Shooter that has solid gameplay, a slick presentation, and good Co-Op. It’s a bit on the easy side, but fans of the genre will find it to be an excellent choice, especially for its low price tag.
Kittens and YarnPuzzleB+
tl;drKittens and Yarn is a family-friendly hex-based tile-swapping Puzzle game that tasks players with rearranging hexagonal tiles to make the lines of colored yarn on the tiles match up. The surprisingly-compelling gameplay is complimented by a warm, soothing presentation. The game is short, but at $3, it’s still well worth picking up, and as such I think Puzzle game fans should consider this a must-have.
Maggie the MagnetPuzzle-PlatformerB+
tl;drMaggie the Magnet is a family-friendly physics-based Puzzle-Platformer where players control a magnet by turning on and off its magnetism. The simple one-button gameplay is well-crafted, and combines with excellent level design to make for a thoroughly enjoyable Puzzle game, with a surprisingly hefty amount of content for its small $5 price tag. If you’re a fan of Puzzle games, Maggie the Magnet is well worth picking up.
Nairi: Tower of ShirinGraphic AdventureB+
tl;drNairi: Tower of Shirin is a family-friendly Graphic Adventure about a young girl who finds herself suddenly on the run from forces seeking to capture her, and trying to find answers both to her family’s whereabouts as well as her connection to an ancient mystery. The gameplay here is fairly standard for the genre, but the charming characters, story, and presentation make this well worth a look for fans of the genre, especially for the low $5 price tag.
Please, Touch the Artwork 2PuzzleB+
tl;dr Please, Touch the Artwork 2 is a character-based Puzzle game that combines hidden object-style puzzles with a few other puzzle types, all in a package based on the artwork of expressionist and surrealist painter James Ensor. The presentation here is excellent and the game does a wonderful job giving players access to hints if they get stuck. This game is only about an hour long, but for only $5 it’s well worth trying out.
PolyrollPlatformerB+
tl;drPolyroll is a family-friendly Platformer that plays like a midway point between a Sonic game and a Mario game, and the result is something that’s actually pretty enjoyable. It’s definitely not going to win any prizes for originality, but what it lacks in originality it more than makes up for with well-crafted gameplay and quality level design. Add to that an appealing $5 price tag and you have a game that Platformer fans should definitely check out.
Savage HalloweenAction-PlatformerB+
tl;drSavage Halloween is an Action-Platformer with old-school charm that has players blasting monstrous enemies with an arsenal of guns. This game doesn’t do anything especially original, but overall it’s a fantastic Action-Platformer, and an absolute steal at $5.
Zumba GardenMatch-3 PuzzleB+
tl;dr Zumba Garden is a family-friendly Match-3 Puzzle game which, like its predecessor, is clearly copying the Zuma formula, and like its predecessor it does a surprisingly good job of it. In fact, this time I would argue things are even better, with a solid presentation and an outstanding RPG-style upgrade system. There are a few options and game modes I wish this game had, and a few minor complaints here and there, but it’s hard to complain when for only $3, we’re getting a “copycat” game that’s nearly as good as the original. If you’re a Puzzle game fan on Nintendo Switch, this is definitely one to get.
2048 BattlesPuzzleB
tl;dr2048 Battles is a version of the 2048 Puzzle game popularized on Smartphones a few years back. This version looks good and plays well enough, but the isometric view is less than ideal and screws up the touchscreen controls, although it’s still a solid puzzle game when played with a D-pad or control stick.
Abyss Seeker–What Do You See Deep in The AbyssTop-Down 2-Stick Shooter / RoguelikeB
tl;drAbyss Seeker is a 2-Stick Shooter Roguelike that has players altering their magical attacks with upgrades they collect in each run. While this game has some gameplay mechanics in common with its predecessor Heaven Seeker, the more simplified gameplay actually works in its favor, and the rock-bottom $2 price makes this an easy game to recommend. If you’re looking for something cheap with some fun action, this is worth a look.
Bit.Trip Fate2-Stick Shooter / Bullet Hell ShmupB
tl;drBit.Trip Fate is a 2-Stick Shooter / Bullet Hell Shmup that makes an interesting twist on the formula by forcing players to stick to a single line when moving. It’s a solid entry in the genre that fans of 2-Stick Shooters should definitely consider, but Bit.Trip fans may be a bit let down by the lack of originality and the downplayed importance of Music-Rhythm elements compared to other games in the series.
Bit.Trip RunnerAuto-Runner / Music-RhythmB
tl;drBit.Trip Runner is an Auto-Runner that incorporates Music-Rhythm elements for a wonderful audiovisual experience that compels you to keep trying even after failing. Which you will do repeatedly, as this game is unforgiving of mistakes. The high challenge level may put off some players, but this game is nevertheless one of the highlights of its genre, even still to this day.
Bow to Blood: Last Captain StandingCombat Flight SimulatorB
tl;drBow to Blood is a Combat Flight Sim where players pilot hulking sci-fi airships in a competition that has elements of the game show Survivor. It’s an odd mix of elements, with gameplay that won’t appeal to everyone, and even then it has its share of flaws. But for only $1, it’s easy to forgive a lot of that when the core gameplay is still enjoyable and has a lot of creative elements to it. I recommend giving it a try – even if this isn’t for you, you’ll only be out a buck if you end up disliking it.
ColorgridPuzzleB
tl;drColorgrid is a chill, relaxing easy-to-play Puzzle game that’s over pretty quick, but for the low asking price of $1, it’s a solid distraction that’s well worth that price.
Crossbow: BloodnightFirst-Person ShooterB
tl;drCrossbow: Bloodnight is a First-Person Shooter where players fend off hordes of monstrous enemies in a courtyard trying to survive as long as possible. While this game doesn’t provide a lot of variety, depth, or features, it looks fantastic, plays well, and its tiny $5 price tag more than makes up for what it’s lacking. This is not a game to get if you’re looking for something deep you’ll want to play for hours. But if you’d like to blast away enemies for a few minutes, this is an outstanding way to do so at a phenomenal price.
DaggerhoodPlatformerB
tl;drDaggerhood is a challenging Platformer where players take the role of the titular thief, who has a dagger he can throw and then teleport himself to. I would have preferred a few tweaks to the controls here, but overall this is an excellent Platformer with a clever central mechanic and great level design, well worth the low $5 price tag.
Death’s HangoverArcade Brick BreakerB
tl;drDeath’s Hangover is an Arcade-style Brick Breaker where players take the role of a pair of idiot warriors that Death has resurrected to invade Bastard Dracula’s castle and take back the souls that the villain stole while Death was on a bender. It’s a solid entry into its genre, with some unique and fun mechanics and a silly but endearing personality that set it apart. It’s a bit short and lacking features that were in the PC version, but for $5 it’s well worth a look if you want a cheap, fun Arcade-style game.
Dig DogPlatformerB
tl;drDig Dog is a simple Platformer with Roguelike elements that has you playing as a dog digging through the Earth to get to a bone, avoiding enemies along the way. The game is fairly unforgiving, but still well worth playing thanks to how good the core gameplay is.
Doom (1993)First-Person ShooterB
tl;drDoom (1993) is the First-Person Shooter that more or less kick-started the genre in the first place, and after the game’s initial problems were patched out, the Switch version plays beautifully. That said, there are definitely elements of the game that have aged poorly, and the lack of online multiplayer in particular is disappointing. Still, this game is a legend, and this is a superb port, so fans of the genre have reason to celebrate.
Geometry SurvivorArcade / RoguelikeB
tl;drGeometry Survivor is an Arcade-style game and Roguelike clearly trying to copy the success of Vampire Survivors, but also copying the art style and gameplay mechanics of the Geometry Wars franchise. The result is a game that, while not quite on par with either of those inspirations, is nevertheless unique and enjoyable enough to be worth playing in its own right.
Gunman Clive HD CollectionCompilation / Action-PlatformerB
tl;drGunman Clive HD Collection is a pair of solid action-platformers with a unique cel-shaded “hand-drawn” look. Although the gameplay is fairly simple and straightforward, the game’s stages and bosses can be amusingly creative at times. Definitely worth a look.
HookPuzzleB
tl;drHook is a short, simple, elegant Puzzle game where players pull on lines attached to hooks in an order where they won’t bump into each other. It’s well worth its $2 asking price.
In-VertPlatformerB
tl;drIn-Vert is a challenging Platformer that has you swapping between two parallel realities to get past obstacles and reach the exit. It’s a game that doesn’t do anything especially original or extraordinary, but it’s solid enough to be worth the low price tag.
InbentoPuzzleB
tl;drInbento is a Puzzle game that has players placing items in a bento box to recreate a photo of a finished layout. This game doesn’t do anything particularly extraordinary to push the genre forward, but what it does do it does very well, with well-designed puzzles and a great presentation. Puzzle fans will find this game well worth its low asking price.
KamikoTop-Down Action-RPGB
tl;drKamiko is a Top-Down Action-RPG that puts players into the role of a shrine maiden transformed into a demon-fighting warrior. This game looks superficially a lot like Zelda, but provides a much more simple experience. While it’s a bit shallow, this is still a pretty fun experience, and well worth its tiny $5 price tag.
Laser Kitty Pow PowArcadeB
tl;drLaser Kitty Pow Pow is an Arcade-style game where one or two players play as giant cats on clouds shooting armies using laser eyes. It’s silly, fast and frenetic, and surprisingly fun. For the tiny price tag, this is a surprisingly good simple game.
Mike DiesPlatformerB
tl;drMike Dies is a challenging Platformer where players need to exit each level by finding a way to get their entire body in a teleportation portal (or else suffer the fate in the game’s title). It doesn’t look very impressive, but this game’s superb level design and insanely good $1 price tag make this a must-have game for Platformer fans looking for something tough, fun, and cheap.
Milli & GregPlatformerB
tl;drMilli & Greg is a challenging Platformer about a young girl trying to get to her pet cat. The presentation here is full of outstanding old-school charm, and the gameplay is very well-crafted, feeling vaguely similar to Celeste (albeit without that game’s inventive late-game mechanics and deep story). If you’re a fan of Platformers, this one is well worth the $4 price tag.
Minit Fun RacerAuto-RunnerB
tl;drMinit Fun Racer is an old-fashioned Arcade-style Auto-Runner that plays out like an obstacle course with some “Roguelite” elements. You likely won’t get more than an hour or so out of this game, but for the low price of $3 it manages to be enjoyable enough while it lasts to worth the price, and the pledge that all earnings from the game will go to charity makes it that much easier to give it a try.
MotifPuzzleB
tl;drMotif is a family-friendly Puzzle game where players recreate snowflake-like geometric shapes. This game has an elegant simplicity to it, and while simple both in graphics and gameplay, it is still surprisingly compelling. With this game containing over 300 puzzles for $3, this is an easy game to recommend to any Puzzle game fan on Nintendo Switch.
MultiversepoolSports (Pool)B
tl;drMultiversepool is a cartoony, spacey-themed version of Pool with a sub-par presentation, a camera that could do with improvement, and optional motion-controls that are gimmicky and not worth bothering with. However, while it’s far from perfect, this is still a respectable Pool game that’s well worth the low $3.50 price tag.
Ninja Striker!Action-PlatformerB
tl;drNinja Striker! Is a fast-paced family-friendly retro-style Action-Platformer where players breeze through the game’s levels attacking one enemy after another. It’s a game that threatens to be a bit too easy at times, and can even feel like it’s on autopilot, but players can find a challenge in the bosses and in speed-running the game, and it’s just so fun to move around and blast through the game’s levels that I’d argue this game is well worth the miniscule $4 price tag. Definitely give it a try.
Piczle CellsPuzzleB
tl;drPiczle Cells is a block-sliding Puzzle game where players combine microscopic blobs to make bigger blobs. The gameplay is decent but nothing revolutionary. However, the presentation is good and there’s a healthy amount of content here for the low $5 price tag. Puzzle game fans looking to pad out their collection should find this a worthwhile addition to their Nintendo Switch library.
Pinkman+PlatformerB
tl;drPinkman+ is a challenging Platformer with a simple retro-style look and a catchy soundtrack. It’s a short game without much in the way of features, but the gameplay and level design are excellent, and I’d argue that it’s definitely worth the small $5 price tag.
Pure Mini GolfSports (Mini-Golf)B
tl;drPure Mini Golf is a simple, almost zen-like experience that takes Mini-Golf to its basics with a relaxing presentation and engaging gameplay, all for a low price of $4. I wish there were more content, and I want better control over the camera, but overall this is a delightful, relaxing game at a great price – I definitely recommend it.
RailwaysArcadeB
tl;drRailways is an Arcade-style game where players re-route trains to pick up passengers on different tracks while avoiding collisions. It’s not a particularly original game, but it has a clean, appealing presentation, it’s well-polished, and both the gamepad and touchscreen controls work quite well. There are some missing features I wish the game had, but for only $5, this is a solid time-waster well worth trying out.
Sparkle UnleashedMatch-3 PuzzleB
tl;dr Sparkle Unleashed is a family-friendly Match-3 Puzzle in the style of genre classic Zuma, and it is mostly an excellent take on the formula, with a wonderful presentation and some nice RPG-style mechanics. Unfortunately, its lack of scores limits replay value, as does the lack of multiplayer. However, it is nevertheless one of the best games in this style to grace Nintendo Switch, and well worth picking up for any Puzzle fan.
Talk to StrangersGraphic Adventure / Visual NovelB
tl;dr Talk to Strangers is a game that mixes Graphic Adventure and Visual Novel elements in a scenario that has players in the role of a door-to-door salesman trying to find the right things to say to convince prospective customers to buy their (unnamed) products. The trial-and-error nature of the conversation choices isn’t quite as bad as you might expect, and the game more than makes up for any repetition by having some genuinely good writing with lots of character and delightfully silly situations. For only $5, this is well worth a look.
The Fall of Elena TemplePuzzle-PlatformerB
tl;dr The Fall of Elena Temple is a Puzzle-Platformer about the titular tomb-robbing Indiana Jones-style adventurer, and a sequel that simplifies both the visuals and gameplay of the previous game, reducing the gameplay down to the parts that worked best while getting rid of the excess. The result is a game that may not look like much, but is cleverly crafted in a way that Puzzle game fans should absolutely give a try, especially with the game’s low $3 price tag.
Top RunAuto-Runner / Action-PlatformerB
tl;drTop Run is an Auto-Runner with Action-Platformer elements that has some really excellent arcade-style gameplay and a great 80s-inspired motif with a killer soundtrack. The game is a bit shallow and repetitive, but it succeeds at what it’s aiming to do, and is an overall fun arcadey experience.
Treasure Hunter Man 2MetroidvaniaB
tl;drTreasure Hunter Man 2 is a $2 budget-priced Metroidvania that’s actually pretty decent despite the small price and generic name. It doesn’t do anything particularly unique or spectacular, but what’s here is good, and definitely worth adding to your collection if you’re a fan of the genre.
Vinebound: Tangled TogetherArcade / RoguelikeB
tl;drVinebound is a family-friendly Arcade-style Roguelike in roughly the same style as Vampire Survivors, but with a focus on co-op play. These co-op elements are well-crafted and really help to set the game apart from others in the genre, and while I do think the game is a tad content-poor and the single-player gameplay seems like an afterthought, this is well worth getting for players looking for a solid co-op experience, especially with this game only setting you back $5.
WizorbArcade Brick BreakerB
tl;drWizorb is an Arcade-style Brick Breaker with a medieval fantasy theme. The challenge level is a bit high for my tastes, and I’m frustrated that the game completely avoids the opportunity to add fun permanent upgrades, but for $5 this is still a solid entry in the genre worth checking out.
Words With FredsPuzzleB
tl;drWords With Freds is a $1 Puzzle Game that plays like a cross between Hangman and Mastermind, and while it’s a simple game, it’s surprisingly compelling and has a fair amount of presentation options. If you’re craving an inexpensive word Puzzle game, this will be a great choice.

$5-$10

GameGenreGrade
Tents and TreesPicross-style PuzzleA
tl;drTents and Trees is a type of family-friendly Puzzle that’s somewhat similar to Picross, albeit with slightly different rules. While this iteration of Tents and Trees doesn’t do anything that’s particularly revolutionary, every single part of this game is polished and high in quality, from the great gameplay, good amount of content, and excellent features, to the classy visuals and wonderfully relaxing soundtrack. If you’re looking for a wonderful Puzzle game to chill with, this is an absolutely ideal choice.
A Short HikeOpen-World Action-RPGA-
tl;drA Short Hike is a family-friendly Open-World Action-RPG, albeit one without enemies, dungeons, hit points, or a significant level of challenge, and one that’s smaller than most open worlds. Still, despite this, and despite how short the game is, it is an absolutely amazing experience from start to finish. Superb writing, a beautiful soundtrack, a memorable visual art style, and wonderful exploration-focused gameplay all make this a hike that, while short, is one well worth taking.
Blaster Master ZeroMetroidvania / Top-Down ActionA-
tl;drBlaster Master Zero is a remake/reboot of the Nintendo Entertainment System classic Action-packed Metroidvania that I would argue is superior to the original, modernizing it and making it a far more playable game by today’s standards. There are still areas where it could do with improvement, but overall this is a phenomenal Metroidvania that straddles the line between old-school and modern design brilliantly.
Blaster Master Zero 2Metroidvania / Top-Down ActionA-
tl;drLike its predecessor, Blaster Master Zero 2 is an Action-packed Metroidvania in the same style of the original Nintendo Entertainment System game, although this game is completely new, building on the formula laid down in Blaster Master Zero while adding new gameplay elements that are worked into the game’s design and really do a good job of improving the overall experience. This game does still suffer the same flaws its predecessor had, but overall it’s a better experience, and a fantastic game fans of Metroidvanias and Action games should give a try.
Drawful 2Party GameA-
tl;drDrawful 2 is a Party Game that players play using their Smartphone instead of a controller. This game challenges players to use their touchscreens to sketch out various prompts and then vote on what other players’ prompts are depicting. This game is a noteworthy improvement over the original, but it’s debatable whether the $10 for this one game is a better value than the $25 for The Jackbox Party Pack containing the first Drawful. Regardless, this is an excellent Party Game, and fans of the genre should certainly get at least one of the games in this series.
Explosionade DXAction-Platformer / 2-Stick ShooterA-
tl;drExplosionade is an Action-Platformer with 2-Stick Shooter mechanics and some really delightful game mechanics like its shield/anti-gravity mechanic and adaptable grenades. It’s a bit short and lacking in content, but it’s more than worth its small $6 price tag, and fans of the genre should absolutely give this game a try.
Fibbage XLParty Game (Trivia)A-
tl;drFibbage XL is a Party Game where players are given an obscure question and prompted to create their own fake answer. Then players try to guess the correct answer from within all of the fake ones. It’s a hilarious spin on the trivia game that means that even if you’re not a trivia master you can still score big by fooling others. This is an all-around fantastic game, and it touts an additional 50% more questions than the original Fibbage. Having said that, this game is already included in the first of the Jackbox Party Pack series on the Nintendo Switch, so players might want to weigh the value of this game against that package.
FliponMatch-3 PuzzleA-
tl;drFlipon is a Match-3 Puzzle game that directly copies the formula of Panel De Pon, and does so extraordinarily well, not only retaining the quality combo-heavy game mechanics of the original, but adding new features like special abilities and 4-player competitive play. It’s only real flaws are a lackluster presentation and a lack of online play. Still, for $6 this is a phenomenal Puzzle game that’s well worth adding to your collection.
LimboPuzzle-PlatformerA-
tl;drEven eight years after its first release, Limbo is still a master class in efficient game design, with excellent Puzzle-Platformer gameplay using simple, straightforward mechanics, and an impressive, memorable presentation that somehow fits within 123MB of memory. While the game’s gruesome imagery may scare off some, and its repeated and often necessary deaths do get frustrating, overall this is still a fantastic entry in the genre well worth owning on the Switch if you don’t already have it on another platform.
Mighty Gunvolt BurstAction-PlatformerA-
tl;drMighty Gunvolt Burst is an Action-Platformer that’s nominally a retro-styled combination of Mighty No. 9 and the Azure Striker Gunvolt series, but save for its characters it’s actually a refreshingly unique take on the classic Mega Man formula with an inspired weapon-creation system that makes this, in my opinion, the pinnacle of both game series. The game is a bit on the short side, but it also has a budget price, and given how much fun this small package is, I urge fans of the genre to give it a try.
Mini MetroPuzzle / SimulationA-
tl;drMini Metro is a superb puzzle/sim game that has you drawing the map for a subway/light rail as more stops and more passengers demand to be delivered swiftly to their destination. Add in a clean, simple graphical interface perfectly suited for the game, and a soothing soundtrack, and you have a real winner here. The only thing that’s keeping this from puzzle perfection is a lack of options and stiff controls.
One Finger Death Punch 2ArcadeA-
tl;drOne Finger Death Punch 2 is an Arcade-style game that has you using only two buttons to have your stick figure fend off an army of attackers, and despite the simple gameplay and visuals, the game is an absolute blast to play. It’s a shame the multiplayer is such a dud, but there’s plenty enough single-player content here to keep you playing for a good long while, and I highly recommend you do.
Remnants of NaezithPlatformerA-
tl;drRemnants of Naezith is a challenging Platformer where players must use a grappling hook and the game’s fun physics system to swing their way to the end of every level. The gameplay here is great, fast-paced, and gives players a lot they can do despite having a limited move set. If you’re down for a tough but fair Platformer, this is a great choice.
Riptide GP RenegadeFuturistic RacingA-
tl;drRiptide GP: Renegade is a futuristic racing game that’s like someone took F-Zero, Wave Race, SSX, and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and threw them into a blender. The result is an intense high-speed racing game that, while light on the number of tracks it offers, is nevertheless a fantastic entry in the genre, well worth getting.
Sega Ages Sonic the HedgehogPlatformerA-
tl;drSonic the Hedgehog remains a classic platformer, and this release of the game adds in a slew of special features and challenge modes that aren’t in the Sega Genesis Classics collection.
Sega Ages Sonic the Hedgehog 2PlatformerA-
tl;drSonic the Hedgehog 2 is a classic Platformer originally released on the Sega Genesis, and it has aged pretty well. This release of the game adds in a slew of special features and challenge modes that aren’t in the Sega Genesis Classics collection. This is one of the highlights of the series, and well worth grabbing for any fan of Platformers.
Shoot 1UP DXShmupA-
tl;drShoot 1UP DX is a Shmup where players control an entire squadron of ships at once, adding potentially dozens of ships to their force. There are multiple creative fun mechanics at work here, difficulty options to cater to every skill level, and just overall this is one of the most enjoyable Shmups I’ve ever played. It’s not as precise and well-crafted as Ikaruga, but it is arguably just as much of a blast to play, and Shmup fans should absolutely add this game to their collection, especially at the fantastic price of $6. Do not miss this one!
Shotgun Cop ManAction-Platformer / 2-Stick ShooterA-
tl;drShotgun Cop Man is an Action-Platformer and 2-Stick Shooter about the titular Shotgun Cop Man who has been sent on a mission to hell to arrest Satan, with this silly story joined by gameplay that has players using their firearms to propel themselves around the air as they fight demons. Movement and combat in this game is an absolute delight, and the absurdity of the story only adds to the joy of this game. The only thing lacking is the PC version’s level creator, but otherwise this is a must-have Action-Platformer on Nintendo Switch.
Shovel Knight: Specter of TormentAction-PlatformerA-
tl;drShovel Knight: Specter of Torment is a standalone expansion to Shovel Knight, the second expansion out of four. This is an Action-Platformer that follows the Specter Knight boss from the first game, who has a unique move-set built around a wall run and a diagonal air slash attack. The game design and level design here is every bit as good as the first game, though it does re-use some assets and Specter Knight isn’t quite as fun a character to play as his shovel-wielding contemporary. Still, this is a solid entry in the series and an excellent Action-Platformer well worth playing.
Shovel Knight: King of CardsAction-PlatformerA-
tl;drShovel Knight: King of Cards is a standalone expansion to Shovel Knight, the third expansion out of four. This is an Action-Platformer that follows the King Knight boss from the first game, who has a unique and fun move-set built around combo-ing shoulder bashes into pirouette spins. The game design and level design here is every bit as good as the first game, though it does re-use some assets and makes some changes to the map that are a bit disappointing. Also, the newly-added card game is decent, but nothing truly great. Still, this is a solid entry in the series and an excellent Action-Platformer well worth playing.
Steamworld DigPlatformerA-
tl;drSteamworld Dig is a Platformer about a robot in a world of robots digging for treasures in an old mineshaft. It makes good use of Roguelike and Metroidvania elements, and has solid platforming and a unique presentation. This is a game well worth getting.
Super Mega ZeroPlatformer / ShmupA-
tl;drSuper Mega Zero is a challenging Platformer with some Shmup sections where players control a zero who can’t jump, but who can touch numbers to jump or dash that many times. This is one of many creative gameplay mechanics that this game is constantly adding into the mix, and combined with excellent level design, a fantastic soundtrack, and some really fun (if a bit overly-easy) Shmup levels all make for a game that’s a lot of fun, and should be a no-brainer for fans of challenging Platformers.
VVVVVVPlatformerA-
tl;drVVVVVV is a gravity-changing Platformer designed to look like an old-school Commodore 64 game, but its simple exterior hides an extremely well-designed game underneath, with a memorable soundtrack, excellent level design, and a really good challenge level. Also, the Nintendo Switch version is the definitive version of the game, with more features and a better framerate than other versions. It’s just a shame that the game is still too damn short. Still, it’s amazing while it lasts.
World of GooPuzzleA-
tl;drWorld of Goo is a physics-based puzzle game that’s oozing with personality and overflowing with inventive ideas.
XeodrifterMetroidvaniaA-
tl;drXeodrifter is a Metroidvania game that really does a good job of feeling like a Metroid game, although it’s a bite-size experience that lacks the scope of the actual Metroid titles.
A Hole New WorldAction-PlatformerB+
tl;drA Hole New World is an Action-Platformer designed to have the look and feel of a classic NES-style game like Mega Man or Ghosts ‘N’ Goblins, and it largely succeeds at delivering a quality experience much in that style, albeit with a huge jump in difficulty shortly into the game. Definitely worth a look for fans of retro-style games.
Art of BalancePuzzleB+
tl;drArt of Balance is a physics-based Puzzle game where you stack blocks and try to keep them from tipping over or falling. This version has a decent amount of content and some multiplayer modes, and the core gameplay here is still as solid as ever.
Artifact SeekerArcade / RoguelikeB+
tl;drArtifact Seeker is a game with Arcade and Roguelike elements that’s similar to Vampire Survivors, with a bit of Slay the Spire tossed in for good measure. It’s a great combination that adds depth to the fun “Bullet Heaven” gameplay, though the terrible menu interface and at times unclear information can be frustrating. Still, this is a great addition to this genre that’s definitely worth trying if you’re looking for a new Vampire Survivors-alike.
Astro BearsParty GameB+
tl;drAstro Bears is a family-friendly Party game that expands on the earlier game Astro Bears Party, with the same core gameplay – it plays like a 3D version of Snake and Tron Bikes, with players leaving trails to try to snag others while avoiding trails themselves. It’s a fast-paced, fun, accessible Party game, but even with additional content over its predecessor, the game feels a bit… well, bare. Still loads of fun in short bursts, but not likely to be a game you play for hours.
AstrologasterVisual NovelB+
tl;drAstrologaster is a Visual Novel about a late-1500s unlicensed doctor who diagnoses patients by reading astrological signs. It’s a well-written and wonderfully voice-acted farce with wonderful characters and a great sense of humor, with clever (albeit at times unclear) situations to diagnose using the power of the stars (or more often, observation and historical insight). Anyone who enjoys Visual Novels and would delight in a funny Shakespherean romp through a tale of medical quackery should definitely give this game a look.
Bloodstained: Curse of the MoonAction-PlatformerB+
tl;drBloodstained: Curse of the Moon is an Action-Platformer that was clearly inspired by Castlevania III, and it does a fantastic job of honoring the legacy of that game while updating the gameplay to be better-suited to modern sensibilities. I wish the game were longer, and I wish it went even farther in updating the classic Castlevania formula to suit the modern day, but largely this game succeeds and fans of the genre, especially old-school Castlevania fans, should consider this a must-have.
Chime SharpPuzzleB+
tl;drChime Sharp, like its predecessor, is an excellent, chill sorta’ puzzle game that’s easy to pick up and hard to put down, and has a wonderful presentation. It’s just a shame that there’s no multiplayer.
Cosmic ExpressPuzzleB+
tl;drCosmic Express is a family-friendly Puzzle Game where players create train routes in various space colonies to deliver aliens to their homes. The gameplay here is simple but well-crafted, with some really clever puzzle design. There’s also a good amount of content here, some good variety, and an adorable presentation. If you enjoy Puzzle games, this is definitely one you’ll want to get.
Crypt StalkerCompilation / Action-PlatformerB+
tl;dr Crypt Stalker is a Compilation of two (and a half) versions of Action-Platformer games inspired by the classic NES and Game Boy Castlevania games, and they succeed at this task beautifully. There are certainly some issues I could nitpick, but overall this is a delightful package that is well worth the $7 price tag.
Cthulhu Saves ChristmasTurn-Based JRPGB+
tl;drCthulhu Saves Christmas is an absolutely fantastic JRPG full of fourth wall-breaking jokes, puns, lovable characters, great writing, tons of 16-bit nostalgia, and a whole slew of creative game systems. My biggest complaint here is that this game is a criminally short and linear experience. Still, at $10 for 6-7 hours of gameplay, this is a budget-priced RPG that fans of the genre should absolutely play, because it is truly brilliant while it lasts.
Danmaku Unlimited 3Bullet Hell ShmupB+
tl;drDanmaku Unlimited 3 is a Bullet Hell Shmup that has players absorbing the bullets of defeated enemies and “grazing” live bullets to power up a “trance” meter for a temporary power boost. This is a solid and visually-striking entry in the genre, but the way players’ attacks fill the screen with beams feels overpowered and can be distracting. Still, this is a must-have for fans of the genre.
Dungeons of DreadrockPuzzleB+
tl;drDungeons of Dreadrock is a character-based Puzzle game that has you thinking your way through 100 floors of a dungeon. The puzzle design in this game is outstanding, really requiring you to pay attention to the environment and enemy patterns. The controls and interface aren’t quite as excellent, though, and sometimes the game seems to expect too much of the player, requiring you to break down and use its (quite good) hint system. Still, on balance, this a Puzzle game that fans of the genre will absolutely want to play.
Fragrant Story and Papaya’s PathTurn-Based Strategy-RPGB+
tl;dr Fragrant Story is a simplified take on the Tactics-style Turn-Based Strategy-RPG, but there’s still some excellent depth and creativity hidden within this game. Plus, at only $8, this is a no-brainer for fans of the genre.
Freshly FrostedPuzzleB+
tl;dr Freshly Frosted is a family-friendly Puzzle game where players place conveyor belts to guide donuts from their ovens to the display shelf. The puzzle mechanics here are simple but good, and the presentation is absolutely delightful, with a wonderfully upbeat and calming atmosphere that makes this game a joy to play. Puzzle fans will definitely want to give this one a look.
FutureGrindFuturistic 2D Stunt RacingB+
tl;drFutureGrind is a Futuristic 2D Stunt Racing game where you race a futuristic vehicle on a series of rails, matching the rails you ride to the color of the wheel. It’s a wonderful concept that’s fun to play. I just wish there were more options here.
GleylancerBullet Hell Shmup / 2-Stick ShooterB+
tl;drGleylancer is a Shmup originally released on the Sega Mega Drive in Japan in 1992, and this release updates the game in numerous ways, including new control options that bring it closer to a 2-Stick Shooter. The original game is a solid entry in the genre, and the port is fantastic. If you enjoy this style of game, you should absolutely grab Gleylancer.
Hidden in Plain SightStealth / Party GameB+
tl;drHidden in Plain Sight is a Stealth-focused Party Game where players try to figure out which character in a crowd they and their opponents are before everyone else does while performing a simple task. This game doesn’t look like much, but it’s extremely accessible and loads of fun for both veteran gamers and casual gamers alike. If you want a fun, unique Party game to add to your collection, consider this game a must-have.
Home Sheep Home: Farmageddon Party EditionPuzzle-Platformer / Platformer / Party GameB+
tl;drHome Sheep Home is a family-friendly co-op Puzzle-Platformer and Party Game based on the Shaun the Sheep animated series and films. This game manages to do a great job with all of its disparate elements – the license is scaled-down somewhat, but what’s here does justice to the franchise. The Puzzle-Platformer content is smartly well-crafted, and the Party Game content is fun and varied enough to keep players entertained for a good while. I have some issues with the core Platformer mechanics here, but overall this is an excellent package that does its best to please everyone, and largely succeeds.
Horizon Shift ’81Arcade / ShmupB+
tl;drHorizon Shift ’81 is an Arcade-Style game with Shmup elements that incorporates elements of multiple early-80s retro arcade games while still bringing its own unique horizontal-swapping twist on the genre. This is a fantastic game and a wonderful love letter to an era of gaming, although like the games of that era it can be repetitive in places. Overall, this is a superb game well worth playing.
Is This Seat Taken?PuzzleB+
tl;drIs This Seat Taken? is a family-friendly logic-based Puzzle game that has you trying to assign seating to a group of people so that all their individual needs are satisfied. The gameplay here is straightforward and accessible but still enjoyable, with new quirks and complications added as you continue playing, and the quaint presentation is wonderfully appealing. This game doesn’t push any envelopes, but it also doesn’t have any significant flaws. If you’re a Puzzle game fan, you’ll definitely want to give this a try.
Kero BlasterAction-PlatformerB+
tl;drKero Blaster is an Action-Platformer that’s far less ambitious in its scope than the developer’s former work, Cave Story, but it is nevertheless a fun smaller experience that’s no less worth playing.
Lunistice3D PlatformerB+
tl;drLunistice is a family-friendly 3D Platformer with visuals that evoke the classic PlayStation, and game design that’s a lot like Sonic Adventure with less of a focus on speed and more of a focus on platforming. The result is a brilliant love letter to the era that’s delightful to play, and while it’s a bit short and has a few minor issues here and there, for only $5 this is an absolute no-brainer for anyone who loves the Platforming genre, especially those who pine for the golden age of the genre. Do not miss this one!
Metaloid: OriginAction-PlatformerB+
tl;drMetaloid is an Action-Platformer with gameplay that seems straight out of the Mega Man X series, although this game takes a completely different approach to its game structure and weapon upgrades. Fans of classic 16-bit era action-platformers should definitely give this game a look.
Monument ValleyIsometric PuzzleB+
tl;drMonument Valley is a family-friendly character-based Isometric Puzzle game where players need to navigate M.C. Escher-like structures by making use of perspective to form pathways. The presentation and puzzle design here is fantastic, though the game is a bit short, the gamepad controls are far from ideal, and touchscreen controls aren’t supported on Nintendo Switch. Despite these issues, this is still well worth a look for Puzzle game fans on Nintendo Switch.
Monument Valley 2Isometric PuzzleB+
tl;drMonument Valley 2 is a family-friendly character-based Isometric Puzzle game much like the first game, where players need to navigate M.C. Escher-like structures by making use of perspective to form pathways, but this time they’re joined by their character’s daughter, whose movements they must also keep in mind. The presentation and puzzle design here is once again fantastic, though the game is still short, the gamepad controls are far from ideal, and touchscreen controls aren’t supported on Nintendo Switch. Despite these issues, this is still well worth a look for Puzzle game fans on Nintendo Switch.
Mosa LinaPuzzle-PlatformerB+
tl;dr Mosa Lina is a physics-based Puzzle-Platformer that spits in the face of genre conventions, giving players a simple task to perform and outfitting them with tools that may be wholly incapable of completing that task. it’s up to players to experiment and find unique ways to use their randomized set of tools. And sometimes players need to admit they can’t do it, give up, and try something different. This won’t be a game for everyone – some players will surely despise the high difficulty and the game’s absolute refusal to present something well thought-out and polished. But others will be absolutely delighted by the variety, wild creativity, and the bold decision to teach players the hard way that they need to be willing to admit defeat. At the very least, players craving something different in a Puzzle-Platformer should absolutely consider Mosa Lina a must-have.
Pang AdventuresArcadeB+
tl;drPang Adventures is an Arcade-style game in the classic Buster Bros series, where you shoot bubbles while dodging them. The game doesn’t do anything to revolutionize the series, but what’s here is done well.
Part Time UFOArcadeB+
tl;drPart Time UFO is a physics-based Arcade-style game that has players grabbing things with a crane connected to a tiny flying saucer. The gameplay here is simple but surprisingly nuanced, there’s a lot of variety and some surprising depth, and while it’s not a very long experience, its low price still makes it well worth adding to your game library.
Piczle Puzzle & Watch CollectionCompilation / Picross Puzzle / Puzzle / SimulationB+
tl;drPiczle Puzzle & Watch Collection is a Compilation of three Puzzle games presented as a Simulation of classic Game & Watch-style handheld LCD devices. The Puzzle games are solid, if a bit simple, and have a good amount of content for the $8 price tag. But what’s really surprising here is just how extensive a Simulation this is, going to some extraordinary lengths to make the LCD devices within the game as realistic as possible. If you’re a Puzzle game fan, this is a solid Compilation for you, but if you’re a fan of retro-style nostalgia, you should absolutely give this game a look.
Pix the CatPuzzle / ArcadeB+
tl;drPix the Cat is a game with Puzzle and Arcade elements that combines the gameplay of Pac-Man and Snake with a really good presentation and a lot of variety across the game’s four modes. It’s a bit on the difficult side, and I feel like a few additions could have made for a huge improvement, but overall this is an excellent game well worth giving a look.
Pizza PossumStealthB+
tl;drPizza Possum is a family-friendly Stealth game where players take the role of a hungry possum trying to gobble up all food in sight without being nabbed by the cops. The core mechanics here are simple but work well, with some inspired mechanics that put a new spin on the Stealth genre, and an absolutely adorable presentation. I do wish this game built on the core gameplay to give it longer legs, but the short length is easily excused by the low $7 price. Overall, this is an outstanding game well worth checking out for casual gamers and Stealth die-hards alike.
Puddle KnightsPuzzleB+
tl;drPuddle Knights is a character-based Puzzle game that has you moving around knights so that nobles can step on their capes to avoid getting their feet dirty in puddles of mud. It’s a cute concept with an appealing presentation, and it makes for some really clever puzzles despite how simple it is to play and control. Puzzle fans, this is definitely a game you’ll want to take a look at.
Quarantine CircularGraphic AdventureB+
tl;drQuarantine Circular is a Graphic Adventure game about an interrogation of an alien life form in the midst of a global pandemic. This game’s well-told story makes it well worth playing despite its short length and the confusion caused by its character-swapping narrative.
Shadow BugAction-PlatformerB+
tl;drShadow Bug is an Action-Platformer that uses motion controls or the touchscreen to have the player dash to attack targeted enemies instead of jumping, with the game’s levels and bosses built around this unique mechanic. It works pretty well, and has a great overall feel to it, supported by an excellent presentation. That said, the Switch’s motion controls are less than ideal, so if you have the option of using the touchscreen to play this game, that’s definitely the way to go.
Sky Force ReloadedBullet Hell ShmupB+
tl;drSky Force Reloaded combines quality bullet hell Shmup-style gameplay with RPG-style upgrades in a way that encourages players to keep coming back, along with a good presentation. Fans of the genre should definitely give this one a try.
Soul LinkFalling-Block PuzzleB+
tl;dr Soul Link is a family-friendly physics-based Falling-Block Puzzle that has players trying to stack Tetris-like blocks to make stable bridges. The gameplay here is excellent, and there’s some good variety for the game’s relatively low price tag. I do wish some of the game mechanics worked better, and the lack of multiplayer is glaring, but despite these issues this is still a superb Puzzle game well worth picking up.
The Bug ButcherArcadeB+
tl;drThe Bug Butcher is an Arcade-style game designed in the style of the classic game Super Buster Bros. The game has good, fast-paced action, good variety in its gameplay, and fun character designs and animation. It’s a shame the levels themselves are so bland, though.
The House of Da VinciFirst-Person PuzzleB+
tl;drThe House of Da Vinci is a First-Person Puzzle game that has you fiddling with beautifully intricate, deviously-designed devices to find a way to enter farther into Da Vinci’s workshop. This game’s puzzles are fantastic, and the game has an excellent optional hint system to keep you from getting stuck for too long. The only flaw here is the game’s motion controls, which can be awkward and frustrating. However, the rest of the game is so good that they’re worth putting up with.
The Room TwoFirst-Person PuzzleB+
tl;drThe Room Two is a First-Person Puzzle game where players interact with a mechanical puzzle boxes to try to gradually unlock their secrets. This is an outstanding Puzzle game that improves on its predecessor, though it does have some control issues and a disappointingly short length. Still, if you’re a fan of Puzzle games, this is well worth a look.
This Way Madness LiesTurn-Based RPGB+
tl;dr This Way Madness Lies is a turn-based JRPG that is a delightfully silly mashup of magical girl tropes with some funny satire picking apart Shakespearean plays, along with a solid soundtrack and some genuinely good combat and RPG mechanics. The story is a bit too linear and episodic, but for only $10 this is an excellent choice for anyone seeking a fun and lighthearted RPG.
Thomas Was AlonePuzzle-PlatformerB+
tl;drThomas Was Alone is a family-friendly Puzzle-Platformer that uses simple visuals, simple gameplay, and outstanding writing and narration to tell a delightful story with wonderful characters. This game isn’t going to impress anyone with its graphics or wow them with some new gameplay mechanic, but it is a master class at telling a story using narration and mechanics in a videogame. If you have not yet played it on another platform, I highly recommend it.
Transcripted2-Stick Shooter / Match-3 PuzzleB+
tl;drTranscripted is a game that combines Two-Stick Shooter gameplay with match-3 Puzzle gameplay similar to Zuma. While the two gameplay styles don’t always get along well with each other, for the most part this is a pretty cohesive gameplay experience that’s satisfying, unique, and features a superb presentation.
W.A.N.D. ProjectArcade / RoguelikeB+
tl;dr W.A.N.D. Project is an Arcade-style Roguelike in the “Bullet Heaven” style of game that Vampire Survivors pioneered, but it manages to separate itself from the pack with its gameplay that has you combining spell components on a flowchart-like grid to create your own custom attacks for your alien-fighting magical girl. I wish there were more content and even more ability to customize your character’s abilities, but overall this is an inspired take on the genre that anyone who enjoys this sort of game should absolutely check out.

Mega Man Legacy CollectionCompilation / Action-PlatformerA+
tl;drMega Man Legacy Collection is a collection of the first six NES games in this series of Action-Platformers. Two of these games are absolutely legendary, one is just as good if a bit less-iconic, and the other games here are all at least worth playing. Pair that with an absolute wealth of options and bonus content and a very reasonable price tag and you have an absolute must-have collection that any fan of Action-Platformers should own.
Brothers: A Tale of Two SonsPuzzleA
tl;drBrothers: A Tale of Two Sons is a story-driven character-based Puzzle game where players control a pair of brothers, with each one assigned to a single analog stick and trigger button. The game uses these mechanics in creative ways, and this inventive gameplay and the gorgeous presentation work together to tell a moving story, one strong enough that the game’s $15 price tag for a 3-4 hour game doesn’t seem so unreasonable. If you haven’t played this game yet, you should absolutely give it a try.
Guacamelee Super Turbo Championship EditionMetroidvaniaA
tl;drGuacamelee is a Metroidvania with game progression that ties into your character’s fighting abilities, with your fighting prowess and movement options growing in tandem. It’s also a joyous celebration of color, humor, memorable characters, and great music. This is one of my favorite games in this genre in years.
Shovel Knight: Shovel of HopeAction-PlatformerA
tl;drShovel Knight: Shovel of Hope is an Action-Platformer that is the first game in the Shovel Knight series. It melds together some of the best parts of classic NES games to create something that is surprisingly original and nostalgic at the same time. Fans of platformers in general absolutely should have this game in their collection.
Stardew ValleyTop-Down Action-RPG / Management SimA
tl;drStardew Valley is a “Farming RPG” much like Harvest Moon, but there’s a huge wealth of stuff to do here, with a charming presentation, a constant stream of new things to change up the experience, and even a wonderful online co-op mode. If you want a fun, mellow experience on the Switch, consider this game a must-have.
A Robot Named FightMetroidvania / RoguelikeA-
tl;drA Robot Named Fight is a combination of a Metroidvania that is very clearly trying to be like Super Metroid, and a Roguelike with randomized level design, permadeath, and the gradual unlocking of upgrades. It doesn’t quite reach the heights of Super Metroid, but it’s still an engaging experience that fans of the genre should definitely check out.
Aaero: Complete EditionMusic-Rhythm / On-Rails ShooterA-
tl;drAaero is a Music-Rhythm game with On-Rails Shooter elements that plays like a more musical version of Rez, with elements of other music-rhythm games added in, ultimately making this game stand alone as a fairly unique entry in the genre. It could do with a bit more content and a few other minor adjustments, but overall this is a fantastic Music-Rhythm game that genre fans should not miss out on.
AggelosMetroidvaniaA-
tl;drAggelos is a Metroidvania game that doesn’t really innovate, but nevertheless delivers an absolutely superb experience with gameplay elements reminiscent of Zelda II, Castlevania II and other classic NES games, but with today’s great gameplay and game design. Well worth owning for fans of the genre.
Ape OutTop-Down ActionA-
tl;drApe Out is a fantastic action game that’s a hidden gem in the Switch’s game library. While the gameplay is a bit simplistic, the presentation is top-notch and makes this a fun, unique, and memorable experience.
Baba Is YouPuzzleA-
tl;drBaba Is You is a character-based puzzle game with wildly inventive mechanics that have you pushing around words to change the rules that the game follows. While the presentation leaves something to be desired, the gameplay here is so absolutely inspired that it really should be played by anyone looking for something new and different, especially fans of puzzle games.
BalatroTurn-Based Card RPG / RoguelikeA-
tl;dr Balatro is a Turn-Based Card RPG and Roguelike that starts with a standard deck of poker cards that players gradually trade out and upgrade, aiming to keep racking up increasingly high scores to get as far as they can. While this game has a few rough spots, overall this is a brilliant mix of accessibility and exquisitely-crafted gameplay that puts it on par with the likes of Slay the Spire as the best this genre has to offer. This is an absolute must-play for any fans of this genre.
Ball x PitArcade / 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike / SimulationA-
tl;drBall x Pit is a game that blends a wide variety of disparate genres, such as 2-Stick Shooter, Arcade, Roguelike, and Management Simulation, resulting in something that is wildly unique, offering a lot of depth, yet still highly-accessible and easy to pick up. Consider this a must-have if you’re craving originality, and something still worth checking out even if you just like some of the genres I named.
Blaster Master Zero IIIMetroidvania / Top-Down ActionA-
tl;drBlaster Master Zero III is the third and purportedly final entry in this trilogy of reboot Metroidvania/Top-Down Action games inspired by the 1988 classic, and I would argue that it is the best in the series, taking everything that was great about Blaster Master Zero 2 and improving on it with more cohesive Metroidvania elements, subtle quality-of-life improvements, and overall better progression, with the same great gameplay and retro-style presentation. While not without its flaws, overall if you’re looking for a modern game that channels the spirit of the best that the 8- and 16-bit era had to offer, you should definitely grab this game.
Blossom Tales: The Sleeping KingTop-Down Action-RPGA-
tl;drBlossom Tales is a Top-Down Action-RPG that does a phenomenal job of copying the Zelda formula, looking and playing much like a long-lost Zelda game. It’s short and a bit lacking in originality, but what’s here is still top-notch.
Castle Crashers RemasteredArcade BrawlerA-
tl;drCastle Crashers Remastered is a port of the 2008 Arcade Brawler with updated visuals, all previously-released DLC, and a new game mode. Well, the new game mode is terrible, but the core game is still as great as ever, and fans of the genre who haven’t already played this game to death on other platforms should consider this one a must-have.
CastleStormTower Defense / ArcadeA-
tl;drCastleStorm is a side-scrolling Tower Defense game with Arcade-style gameplay elements where players can customize their own castle and then war with opponents in other castles, commanding troops and firing using a ballista to control the battlefield. This is a game that gives players a lot of freedom to make strategic choices, and does a good job making them easy to understand through the game’s campaign. What’s more, this is a fantastic multiplayer game both in co-op and competitive play, local and online (though the online lobbies are empty now), and the Nintendo Switch version is the definitive version of the game, with its excellent touchscreen controls in portable mode. If you enjoy Strategy games and don’t already have this on another platform, you should absolutely give it a try.
Dicey DungeonsRoguelike / Board GameA-
tl;drDicey Dungeons is a family-friendly Roguelike with Board Game elements that plays like a cross between Slay the Spire and Yahtzee. While perhaps not as deep as the former, Dicey Dungeons makes up for it by being highly accessible and easy to play, while still having a fair amount of depth. If you enjoy both genres this game is derived from, you’ll definitely want to give it a look.
Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!Visual Novel / HorrorA-
tl;drDoki Doki Literature Club is an extremely original Visual Novel Dating Sim-style game about a boy who joins a school’s literature club and takes an interest in the club’s cute girls. There is deceptively good writing here, as well as other elements that I can’t discuss here without giving major spoilers. However, suffice it to say that there is some extreme stuff in the game that may not make it suitable for everyone. But those who enjoy the genre and don’t mind challenging topic matter will find this to be a truly inspired take on the genre.
FlinthookAction-Platformer / RoguelikeA-
tl;drFlinthook is an Action-Platformer with Roguelike elements that has you fighting through room after room of space pirates with a blaster gun and a grappling hook. The game looks and sounds great, and the grappling hook makes for some really fun gameplay that makes just moving around a joy. It’s a tough game, and the Roguelike elements do have a few issues, but overall this is an excellent Action-Platformer well worth playing.
Fly Together!ArcadeA-
tl;drFly Together! Is a family-friendly Arcade-style game like Flight Control, where players control the flight paths of planes as they guide them to airports to deliver passengers. It’s not a new concept, but it’s done exceptionally well here, with particularly great co-op and competitive multiplayer play. The single-player content feels like it could have been fleshed out more, but overall this is an excellent game to add to your rotation of fun multiplayer games on Nintendo Switch.
Hollow KnightMetroidvaniaA-
tl;drHollow Knight is a Metroidvania with an absolutely beautiful moody presentation, tons of secrets and things to find, and a punishing difficulty. It’s not without its flaws, but if you like the genre, it’s well worth your time.
HoracePlatformerA-
tl;drHorace is a Platformer where players take the role of a robot trying to make sense of the world, help others, and clean up junk. This is a wonderful Platformer with a surprisingly moving and funny story and great characters. It can’t fully seem to decide if it wants to be a Metroidvania or a more straightforward Platformer, but either way this game is a phenomenal Platformer well worth playing.
Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iXAction-PlatformerA-
tl;drGunvolt Chronicles focuses on the Gunvolt series’ supporting character Copen, in an Action-Platformer that plays very much like the Azure Striker Gunvolt games but without the restricted limitations that those games had as they were originally designed for the 3DS and this was not. The result is what I would argue is a far superior game, and although it’s not nearly as memorable as the classic Mega Man games that inspired it, it’s still an excellent game in the same vein as those legends.
IkarugaBullet Hell ShmupA-
tl;drIkaruga is a Bullet Hell Shmup that’s at its best on the Switch, which not only plays smoothly while docked, but even has features to make the best use of the Switch in portable mode. If you like this genre, you need this game.
IroncastUnlimited Pattern Puzzle / Turn-Based RPG / RoguelikeA-
tl;drIroncast is a combination of Puzzle, Turn-Based RPG, and Roguelike elements that puts players in the role of an upper-class mech operator in an alternate version of Victorian England at war with France. This is a game that requires players to be mindful of its various interconnected systems as they engage in battles, with some really excellent strategic elements that make the game extremely engaging. There is definitely room here for improvement, but overall this game is a blast to play, and well worth giving a try.
Keep Talking and Nobody ExplodesPuzzle / Party GameA-
tl;drKeep Talking and No One Explodes is a cooperative puzzle game where one player is defusing a bomb that others can’t see, and the others are relaying instructions from a manual that the bomb defuser can’t see. It’s a really inventive, fun, and unique game that’s sure to be a blast at parties.
Light FallPlatformerA-
tl;drLight Fall is a platformer with excellent physics and a really great “magic box” mechanic that makes it really fun to move around, and the game’s presentation is superb… that is, except for the throwaway story and the annoying narration. However, while this game isn’t without its problems, fans of platformers should still give it a try, as it’s still a blast to play.
Little Noah: Scion of ParadiseAction-Platformer / RoguelikeA-
tl;drLittle Noah is an Action-Platformer with Roguelike elements (on the “Roguelite” side of the spectrum) where players fight through dungeons as a young woman whose attacks consist of “Lilliput” creatures collected along the way and assigned by the player into their own custom attack combos. This makes for an extremely varied and enjoyable combat system, in an overall polished, appealing, fun and original take on the genre. If you like Roguelikes, this is absolutely a game you should try.
Lumines RemasteredPuzzleA-
tl;drLumines is a Tetris-style Puzzle game where players drop blocks and match colors in the shape of squares and rectangles, all to the tempo of the game’s wide variety of music and visuals. The gameplay is solid, the fantastic presentation looks even better in HD, and in short for fans of this genre, this should be considered an absolute must-have.
MelatoninMusic-RhythmA-
tl;drMelatonin is a family-friendly Music-Rhythm game that takes the basic gameplay idea of Nintendo’s Rhythm Heaven series and adapts it to this game’s dream-inspired levels with a wonderful pastel presentation and bizarre dream logic. Not only does this game feature great gameplay comparable to its inspiration, it actually builds on it with clever ways to shake up that gameplay. I do have a few minor complaints, but overall I think this is a must-have game for Music-Rhythm fans.
Monaco Complete EditionTop-Down StealthA-
tl;drMonaco is a Top-Down Stealth game that has you as one of various archetypal members of a crew of criminals breaking into and out of places, robbing them, and trying not to get caught while doing so. It’s a difficult game, but it’s delightful in single-player, and an absolute blast in co-op. Online play requires jumping through the Switch’s usual frustrating hoops, but local and local wireless play is excellent, and on the whole this is still a must-have game for co-op fans on the Switch.
Mutant Mudds CollectionCompilation / Platformer / Falling Block PuzzleA-
tl;drMutant Mudds Collection is a compilation of the two Mutant Mudds Platformer games and a new Puzzle game, with all three being good entries in their respective genres, and the collection overall being a fantastic value.
NeuroVoider2-Stick Shooter / RoguelikeA-
tl;drNeuroVoider is a combination of Two-Stick Shooter and Roguelike that has you fighting an army of robots, stealing their parts, and then using them to upgrade your own capabilities. It’s an incredibly fun game with great co-op, a fantastic presentation, and tons of variety and customization. The randomized level design and enemy AI could have used a bit of work, but on the whole this is an absolutely fantastic game that should be owned by anyone who enjoys a good Action game.
Octahedron: Transfixed EditionPlatformerA-
tl;drOctahedron is a Platformer with some unique mechanics that have you creating your own platforms and surfing on them in a neon-infused presentation with a rocking chiptune soundtrack. This game is a delight that fans of Platformers should absolutely play.
Pure PoolSports (Pool)A-
tl;drPure Pool is quite possibly the best game of Pool I have ever played that didn’t involve picking up a real cue. This game looks absolutely gorgeous, sounds great, plays great, has plenty of content. There are a few areas where I could nitpick – it doesn’t have motion controls, could have used more tutorial content, and players should have been given more control over the camera. But even with these minor issues, this is still an absolutely phenomenal game of Pool at a fantastic price.
SanabiAction-PlatformerA-
tl;dr Sanabi is an Action-Platformer where players take the role of a revenge-fueled man using his bionic arm’s grappling hook to swing acrobatically through a desolate cyberpunk-style city and gracefully and efficiently eliminate its robotic threats. What’s more, this game has an outstanding story filled with character and atmosphere, and while the story and gameplay can butt heads at time, it hardly matters as both the gameplay and the story had me glued to my screen. This is a truly must-play game for any Action fan on Nintendo Switch.
Sayonara Wild HeartsArcadeA-
tl;drSayonara Wild Hearts is a cool, stylish Arcade-style game that ties together multiple elements into simple but fast-paced gameplay that repeatedly finds new ways to surprise the player, all while delivering a stellar, memorable presentation. It has some issues with wild fluctuations in difficulty level, and it’s over far too soon, but this is a unique experience well worth having on the Switch.
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game – Complete EditionArcade BrawlerA-
tl;drScott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game is quite simply one of the greatest Arcade Brawlers ever made, and its long-awaited release on Nintendo Switch does not disappoint. While this game still bears some of the flaws of the genre (short length, repetitive combat), it is nevertheless an outstanding experience with tons of depth and a great retro-style presentation that is a must-have for any fan of the genre.
SeveredFirst-Person Action-RPGA-
tl;drSevered is a handheld-only First-Person Action-RPG about a girl with a severed arm fighting monsters in a nightmare realm to find her missing family. This game has a stylized, unique look and a wildly inventive combat system, and while the dungeon crawling elements here aren’t quite as inspired, the touchscreen combat is so well-crafted and fun that this should be a must-buy for players who play their Nintendo Switch primarily in handheld mode and don’t already have the game on another platform.
Super Cable BoyPlatformerA-
tl;drSuper Cable Boy is a challenging Platformer where players control a Game Boy-like device in a digital world. The visual presentation is striking and fits the game’s themes well, but what really stands out here is the excellent gameplay, which challenges players to swap between different “cartridges” (abilities) to perform some great acrobatic feats. There’s even a solid 2-player co-op mode here as well. In short, if you enjoy challenging Platformers, consider Super Cable Boy a must-have.
Super Meat BoyPlatformerA-
tl;drSuper Meat Boy is a challenging platformer with a great physics engine, superb gameplay, and a generally great presentation, and the Switch version even adds in a nice 2-player mode. But it also doesn’t have the original game’s fantastic soundtrack, and that’s a big loss for an otherwise incredible game.
The Red Strings ClubGraphic AdventureA-
tl;drThe Red Strings Club is a Graphic Adventure with an extremely well-written cerebral cyberpunk neo noir plot, and some great atmosphere to go with it, as well as some great bartending gameplay elements that fit surprisingly well with the game’s themes of emotional empathy and information gathering. It’s not super-long and the controls are less than ideal, but players looking for a fantastic, well-told story should absolutely look into this game.
The Walking Dead: The Complete First SeasonGraphic AdventureA-
tl;drThe Walking Dead: The Complete First Season brings to Switch the five numbered episodes and “400 Days” that collectively form the first game in the series of Graphic Adventure games set in the same universe as the TV show and comics. While many of the elements of this game have aged somewhat, together they still form a powerful experience that’s still well worth playing today, and anyone who missed out on it the first time should definitely give the game a try now.
Tiny MetalTurn-Based StrategyA-
tl;drTiny Metal is a Turn-Based Strategy game that attempts to show us what the Advance Wars series would look like if it was done using more modern graphics, and it succeeds brilliantly. It’s just a shame that it’s a bit feature-poor in comparison to the legacy it’s taking after. Also, be sure to mess with the settings before you start, as the default settings can cause issues.
Toki Tori 2+: Nintendo Switch EditionPuzzle-PlatformerA-
tl;drToki Tori 2 is a Puzzle-Platformer that plays very differently from the first game, with players limited to only two basic abilities, and progressing through the game by learning how the various parts of the environment react to those abilities and each other. It’s a refreshing and streamlined approach that suits the game very well, making it a unique experience that’s bolstered by an excellent presentation, with some extremely clever puzzle design.
Ultimate Chicken HorsePlatformer / Party GameA-
tl;drUltimate Chicken Horse is a family-friendly Platformer with a robust creation tool set and a focus on multiplayer gameplay that challenges players to create levels that they can beat but the other players can’t. It’s a tremendously good time, and while the presentation and core gameplay aren’t on par with Super Mario Maker 2, the multiplayer in this game is clearly superior, making this a fantastic party game. If you’re looking for a good supplement Mario Maker or a fun game to bring out at a party, Ultimate Chicken Horse is a must-have.
UnavowedGraphic AdventureA-
tl;drUnavowed is a Graphic Adventure about a new inductee into a paranormal investigation organization solving gruesome mysteries and finding answers about the demon who possessed you. The game looks great, the writing is sharp, the characters are fantastic, the voice acting is excellent, and the character-swapping mechanic gives players numerous ways to solve problems. The game doesn’t provide you quite as much freedom as one would hope, but overall this game should be considered a must-play for fans of Graphic Adventures and especially fans of classic LucasArts-style point-and-click games.
UndertaleTurn-Based RPGA-
tl;drUndertale is an RPG that does all sorts of wild, inventive things with the genre, from its bullet hell-esque battle system to its quirky story about a world of monsters that you can opt to talk to or befriend instead of fight. It’s not an RPG for everyone, but fans of the genre absolutely should give it a try.
WunderlingAuto-RunnerA-
tl;drWunderling is an Auto-Runner that has players in the role of a Goomba-like creature hunting down this game’s stand-in for Mario. The concept here is clever, and the story surrounding it even more so, but what’s really fantastic about this game is its excellent level design and well-crafted gameplay. If you enjoy Platformers, Wunderling is definitely a game you should try.
Yars: Recharged2-Stick ShooterA-
tl;drYars: Recharged is a 2-Stick Shooter inspired by the Atari classic Yars’ Revenge, but this game far surpasses its inspiration, using elements from that game to craft an excellent boss rush-style 2-stick shooter where players must whittle down enemies’ defenses. Regardless of whether or not you’ve played the original, this is an outstanding Action game, and at only $10 it’s an easy game to recommend.

AlekonFirst-Person Shooter / Misc.A
tl;drAlekon is a family-friendly photography-focused First-Person Shooter where players take pictures of fictional creatures (literally called Fictions), with gameplay that is clearly inspired by the Pokemon Snap franchise. However, more than just being a copycat, Alekon is a wonderfully-accessible, varied, and just overall delightful game that actually manages to rival the Pokemon Snap games to become a truly great game in its own right. Fans of the Pokemon Snap franchise should consider this a must-buy, and anyone curious about photography videogames may want to consider making this game one of their first entries into the genre.
Axiom VergeMetroidvaniaA
tl;drAxiom Verge is a Metroidvania that is the closest thing to Super Metroid outside of the Metroid series itself, yet it still maintains its own identity, with its own bizarre alien world, an intriguing plot, and unique powers based on the “glitchy” infection spreading through the game’s world. While the game has a few flaws keeping it from perfection (some control issues and a fairly high difficulty level), it is still a phenomenal game that fans of Metroidvanias absolutely need to get.
Axiom Verge 2MetroidvaniaA
tl;drAxiom Verge 2 is a Metroidvania that is a big departure from the first game, focusing on a new character, with new enemies, a completely different set of abilities, and a compelling new sci-fi plot to follow. This game has excellent exploration, some fun and unique traversal options, and while there are definitely some areas where it could be improved, this is overall a must-play entry in the genre.
Battle Chef Brigade DeluxeAction-Platformer / PuzzleA
tl;drBattle Chef Brigade Deluxe is a delicious combination of color-matching puzzle gameplay and action-platformer that is both unique and a lot of fun. It’s just missing a multiplayer mode to make full use of all of the great gameplay that’s on display here.
Braid, Anniversary EditionPuzzle-PlatformerA
tl;dr Braid is a Puzzle-Platformer about a man trying to undo the problems of his past and reunite with his girlfriend, with this taking the form of a game about manipulating time. As in its original release, this game features some truly incredible puzzle design and a gorgeous presentation that looks even better in this release, and it’s joined by new levels and over 12 hours of commentary. All of this adds up to what is truly the definitive version of an absolute must-play Puzzle-Platformer.
Castlevania Advance CollectionCompilation / Metroidvania / Action-PlatformerA
tl;drCastlevania Advance Collection is a Compilation of Castlevania: Dracula X, Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance, and Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow. While Dracula X and Harmony both have their flaws, they’re both still solid games well worth playing. However, Circle and especially Aria are absolutely fantastic Metroidvania games that are must-play entries in the genre. Add to all of that a wealth of extra content and options and a wonderful $20 price tag, and you have a collection that is a must-buy for both Castlevania fans and Metroidvania-lovers.
Crypt of the Necrodancer: Nintendo Switch EditionTop-Down Roguelike / Music-RhythmA
tl;drCrypt of the Necrodancer: Nintendo Switch Edition is a phenomenal mash-up of the Roguelike and Music-Rhythm genres with a great soundtrack and game design that makes it all too tempting to dance your way back into the dungeon for another punishing attempt at getting just a little farther.
Fast RMXFuturistic RacingA
tl;drFast RMX is a futuristic racing game that isn’t quite on par with F-Zero, but it comes damn close. It looks absolutely fantastic at blazing speeds, plays well, and although it has a few minor issues, it’s still a spectacular game that every racing game fan with a Switch should own.
GrisPuzzle-PlatformerA
tl;drGris is a puzzle-platformer that seeks not to challenge the player, but guide them through an emotional journey of absolutely beautiful sights and sounds, looking into the soul of a young girl working through a dark time in her life. Don’t play this game if you want a great game, play it if you want an absolutely captivating experience.
InsidePuzzle-PlatformerA
tl;drInside is a Puzzle-Platformer that is the spiritual successor to Limbo, and it improves upon the first game in nearly every way, with stunning and stylish visuals, clever and varied gameplay, and a fascinating and detailed world. The only complaint I have is that the game is tragically short – just 3 or 4 hours long. However, it’s an enthralling 3-4 hours, and if you don’t already have this game on another platform (and don’t mind the game’s gruesome violence), you should absolutely pick this one up.
NevaAction-PlatformerA
tl;dr Neva is a stunning Action-Platformer about a woman and her adopted white wolf cub fighting off an evil corruption. The gameplay here is good, and more substantial than this developer’s previous work, Gris. But the focus here is still on the absolutely beautiful presentation. In any case, this is a stunning game that is absolutely not to be missed.
Overcooked Special EditionArcade / PartyA
tl;drOvercooked is an Arcade/Party game where up to four players cooperate to try to prep and cook dishes to order in increasingly crazy kitchens. It’s a fast, frenzied experience that makes for one of the finest co-op experiences available on the Switch.
Steamworld Dig 2PlatformerA
tl;drSteamworld Dig 2, like the first game, is a Platformer about a robot in a world of robots digging for treasures in an old mine shaft. It makes good use of Roguelike and Metroidvania elements, and has solid platforming and a unique presentation. However, this sequel improves on the first game in just about every way, with more player options, more varied environments, and a longer campaign with a more interesting story. This is a must-have for fans of Platformers, and a no-brainer for anyone who enjoyed the first game.
TowerFallAction-Platformer / ArcadeA
tl;drTowerFall has up to six players in a furious battle shooting arrows at one another or teaming up against enemies in a challenging and rewarding action-packed experience with a fantastic presentation, and with exclusive content that makes the Switch version of the game the definitive way to play it. It’s a bit on the tough side, but if you enjoy skill-based platforming and especially if you want to play with friends, TowerFall is absolutely a game you should own.
UnsightedAction-RPGA
tl;drUnsighted is an Action-RPG where players take the role of a humanoid automaton fighting a horde of the titular mindless robotic enemies to try to save her people. This game expertly combines elements of some of the best Action-RPG and Metroidvania games, with some really great exploration, puzzles, combat, crafting, and tons of secrets to find. And while some of the game’s default elements are brutally difficult, there are also numerous options so players can customize the experience to their own personal challenge level. The result is a phenomenal game that’s an absolute must-play regardless of whether you’re a challenge-seeker or simply want a wonderful, unique adventure.
WargrooveTurn-Based StrategyA
tl;drWargroove is a Turn-Based Strategy game that is a damn near perfect spiritual successor to Advance Wars. This game is absolutely loaded with features, and should be considered a must-have for any fan of strategy games.
Wargroove 2Turn-Based StrategyA
tl;drWargroove 2 is a Turn-Based Strategy game which, like the previous Wargroove, clearly takes its inspiration from Nintendo’s Advance Wars series, albeit with a medieval fantasy setting and a wealth of features and improvements over what Nintendo has on offer. This sequel makes multiple small improvements, such as a new Roguelike-esque Conquest mode, but mostly this is more of the same sublime Turn-Based Strategy gameplay we saw in the first game. And in improving on one of the best games in the genre, Wargroove 2 has arguably become the new king of the genre on Nintendo Switch. Plus, with the game costing only $20, Strategy fans will absolutely want to get their hands on this game.
X-Morph DefenseTower Defense / Two-Stick ShooterA
tl;drX-Morph: Defense mixes the Tower Defense genre with the Two-Stick Shooter to create something even better, with impressively detailed environments and some really inventive gameplay. This game is a blast to play, and while the Switch version is sadly missing some features, it’s still an absolutely wonderful game.
Yoku’s Island ExpressMetroidvania / PinballA
tl;drYoku’s Island Express is a Metroidvania Pinball game that puts you in the role of a cartoony dung beetle lugging around a big round rock as he delivers mail across a huge and complex island set up like a gigantic pinball machine. It’s an odd combination of elements that works amazingly well, heightened by a beautiful presentation and an overall joyful experience throughout. Definitely give this game a look.
Assault Android Cactus+2-Stick ShooterA-
tl;drAssault Android Cactus is a 2-Stick Shooter that has some fun, unique mechanics and a lot of great, intense action. It’s a blast to play in co-op, and the Switch version is the definitive version of the game. I only wish the sub-weapon dodge-swapping mechanic was better-utilized, and the levels looked more distinct. But those are minor complaints about what is a fantastic game on the Switch.
Astalon: Tears of the EarthMetroidvaniaA-
tl;drAstalon is a retro-style Metroidvania with a great presentation, a fantastic chiptune soundtrack, a clever character-swapping mechanic, wonderful level design, and some nice Roguelike elements. The high challenge level may put off some players, but overall this is a delightful entry in the genre that fans of this sort of game would do well to play.
AVICII InvectorMusic-RhythmA-
tl;drAVICII Invector is a Music-Rhythm game that has you moving down a rotating corridor in a spaceship and hitting notes in time with the late artist’s music. This game has fantastic graphics and a great soundtrack, and while there are areas here and there that could do with some tweaking, overall this is a must-have game for Music-Rhythm fans.
Backpack HeroRoguelike / Turn-Based RPG / Management SimulationA-
tl;dr Backpack Hero is a game that combines Roguelike, Turn-Based RPG, and Management Simulation elements, with a strong emphasis on organizing equipment in your backpack for the most effective results in battle. The way this game takes a classic RPG mechanic and expands on it to make it such a major element of the gameplay here is absolutely inspired. There are a few areas where this game could do with a bit more work, but overall this game is an absolute delight, and one that is definitely worth a look for fans of RPGs and Roguelikes.
Beacon PinesGraphic AdventureA-
tl;drBeacon Pines is a Graphic Adventure game set in a rural town filled with anthropomorphized animals where players follow a young boy trying to uncover the town’s mysteries. This game features a well-told story with wonderful characters, a gorgeous art style, a beautiful soundtrack, and a clever but accessible “charm” and “turning point” mechanic that all make this a must-play game for fans of the genre. The only major flaw I can point to is text that’s at times difficult to read, but it’s worth putting up with this issue because the rest of the game is so delightful.
Bioshock Infinite: The Complete EditionFirst-Person ShooterA-
tl;drBioshock Infinite takes this First-Person Shooter series to the skyward city of Columbia, resulting in what I believe to be the best story, the best world-building, the best visuals, and the best gameplay in the series. The Nintendo Switch version runs well, but has the most visual cutbacks made to it out of the entire Bioshock trilogy compared to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 counterparts. Even so, this is a phenomenal First-Person Shooter that still looks and plays great on the Switch, and it’s an absolute must-play game for fans of the genre, especially if you don’t already have it on another platform.
Castlevania Anniversary CollectionCompilation / Action-PlatformerA-
tl;drCastlevania Anniversary Collection is a collection of Action-Platformers that includes eight of the great games from early in the series (well, six great games plus two crappy Game Boy games). This collection gives players a wealth of options and bonus content, and is… actually pretty ideal for a collection of some of the best Action-Platformers ever made. This title is a must for fans of the genre.
Chicory: A Colorful TaleTop-Down Action-RPGA-
tl;drChicory is a family-friendly Top-Down Action-RPG in the style of old-school Zelda games, albeit with more of a focus on puzzles, exploration, and characters than on combat. Chicory is absolutely charming and full of personality, with a delightful presentation, a lovely soundtrack, and some creative gameplay elements. The Nintendo Switch version even has some outstanding optional gyroscopic motion controls (though it’s a tradeoff that also comes with some nasty slowdown at times). There are some gameplay elements here that don’t quite mesh together well, but overall this is an outstanding game that should be considered a Must-Play for anyone who would enjoy a relaxed adventure.
Child of Light: Ultimate EditionTurn-Based JRPG / MetroidvaniaA-
tl;drChild of Light is an outstanding RPG with Metroidvania elements. There’s a lot of inventive gameplay here, but it’s the game’s dreamy, somber audiovisual presentation that steals the show. And while the game’s story isn’t quite as strong as the rest of the package, this game is still an absolute treat for RPG fans.
CindersVisual NovelA-
tl;drCinders is a Visual Novel that takes the classic Cinderella story and breathes new life into it with excellent writing, three-dimensional interpretations of the old story’s characters, and choices that actually matter to the flow of the story. There’s nothing truly revolutionary here to change the Visual Novel genre, but rather a game that makes use of the genre to its fullest, and anyone who enjoys a good, well-told story should absolutely give it a look.
Core KeeperOpen-World Top-Down Action-RPG / Survival AdventureA-
tl;drCore Keeper is an Open-World Top-Down Action-RPG with Survival Adventure elements that has players digging through a vast underground world, exploring and discovering new treasures, mysteries, and dangers. For players who enjoy games like Minecraft and Terraria, this should be considered a must-have, and fans of Action-RPGs in general should give this a look too – its well-crafted and varied gameplay and its wonderful presentation make for something truly special.
CrossCodeTop-Down Action-RPG / 2-Stick ShooterA-
tl;drCrossCode is an Action-RPG that combines the melee combat and RPG elements of classics of the genre with fast-paced 2-Stick Shooter action, and pairs it with a wonderful world to explore. There are places where this game could be improved, but overall this is a phenomenal entry in the genre, and Action-RPG fans should definitely take notice.
CupheadAction-PlatformerA-
tl;drCuphead is an Action-Platformer like Contra and Metal Slug where you’re firing tons of bullets and dodging enemy attacks, but what really makes this game special is its absolutely gorgeous hand-drawn animation and its high difficulty level. Not to be missed.
Dandy Dungeon – Legend of Brave Yamada –Puzzle / RPGA-
tl;drDandy Dungeon combines an RPG with a Puzzle game in a really unique and original way that has you stepping on every tile of each dungeon floor and fighting enemies in your path in the game-within-a-game, all while Yamada prances around in his underwear, sings the game’s music, and constantly adds stuff into the game based on the zany events of his life. It’s wacky, fun, wildly original, and instantly endearing, only being marred by repetitive gameplay and grinding. Definitely worth a look.
Devil May Cry 3 Special EditionSpectacle FighterA-
tl;drDevil May Cry 3 is a Spectacle Fighter that’s a prequel to the first two games, focusing on Dante’s rivalry with his brother Virgil. This game is a return to form for the series that’s still a joy to play to this day, even if the graphics are dated (despite the remastered HD upgrade) and the camera could use a bit of work still. And while the game is still somewhat overpriced, at least this time Nintendo Switch owners are getting something in exchange for that expense – new control options to swap combat styles mid-combo make the Nintendo Switch version the definitive edition of the game. If you’re a fan of this genre, Devil May Cry 3 on the Nintendo Switch may be a must-buy, despite its price point and even if you already own it on another platform. And for those who never played it in the first place, this is a no-brainer.
Farm TogetherManagement SimA-
tl;drFarm Together is a Farm Management Sim that has a lot of the trappings of a microtransaction-filled game, but without the microtransactions. Instead, you’ll find it to have nice, relaxing gameplay that puts the focus on playing the game a little bit at a time and gradually watching your farm grow over time. If you’re cool with that sort of thing, this game could surprise you with how enjoyable it is.
Forgotton AnnePuzzle-PlatformerA-
tl;drForgotton Anne is a puzzle-platformer with a wonderful, unique story and a fantastic presentation that seems like it’s right out of a Studio Ghibli film. The puzzle design isn’t especially challenging, but you’ll want to play through the game to experience more of its story.
GrindstoneUnlimited Pattern PuzzleA-
tl;drGrindstone is a Puzzle game that has players guiding a warrior through hordes of color-coded monsters. It’s a compelling, visceral Puzzle game that’s a delight to play, with only a few very minor complaints I can point to. Fans of the genre should definitely give this game a try.
Guacamelee 2MetroidvaniaA-
tl;drGuacamelee 2 is a Metroidvania with a superb fighting engine, and it retains many of the qualities that made the first game great. However, it’s a little less focused and a little rougher than the first game. It’s still one of the best Metroidvanias on the Switch, but not quite as good as its predecessor.
Hard WestTurn-Based Strategy-RPG / Interactive Story-Driven AdventureA-
tl;drHard West is an XCOM-style Strategy-RPG that mixes in Choose-Your-Own Adventure mechanics, set in a darker, more supernatural version of the Wild West. It’s not without a few rough edges, but on the whole this is a delightfully inventive take on the genre, well worth a look.
Hollow Knight: SilksongMetroidvaniaA-
tl;drHollow Knight: Silksong is the long-awaited sequel to the original Hollow Knight, and it is a fine successor, with an absolutely beautiful presentation and a fascinating new world to explore. Unfortunately, it still has many of the problems the first game had, including a punishing difficulty level and frustrating design choices. Still, even with these issues, this is a game not to be missed for any fan in the genre who isn’t opposed to a challenge.
InscryptionTurn-Based Card Game / Roguelike / First-Person Graphic AdventureA-
tl;drInscryption is a deck-building Card Game and Roguelike with a First-Person Graphic Adventure framing device with players finding themselves in a dark cabin with a mysterious, sinister dealer playing a card game about sacrificing animals. The card game itself is excellent, and the foreboding dark atmosphere is absolutely wonderful. Unfortunately, that same darkness can make this game hard to see in handheld mode, and there are a few other minor frustrations here and there. However, in spite of these issues, Inscryption is a macabre delight, and it’s a game I highly recommend, especially to fans of similar games like Slay the Spire.
Jamestown+Bullet Hell ShmupA-
tl;drJamestown+ is a Bullet Hell Shmup that has players blasting 17th century colonial European troops and aliens in outer space. The bonkers setting comes with a fantastic presentation, some wonderful and clever game mechanics that add a lot of strategy, plenty of variety and imagination, and a superb co-op mode. It’s a shame the game’s structure makes you re-play levels repeatedly and forces its story on you over and over again, but overall this is one of the best games in this genre on the Switch.
Let’s Build a ZooManagement SimulationA-
tl;drLet’s Build a Zoo is a Management Simulation about building up and running a zoo. The core gameplay here is solid, epitomizing the genre formula well. However, on top of this, you also have some clever game mechanics and a wonderful presentation. The result is one of the best entries this genre has seen on Nintendo Switch, although it’s certainly not without its flaws. However, if you like Management Simulations, this is definitely one you won’t want to miss.
Lil Gator GameOpen-World Action-RPG / 3D PlatformerA-
tl;drLil Gator Game is a family-friendly game that combines Open-World Action-Adventure and 3D Platformer elements, with gameplay that feels like a very kid-friendly take on the sort of gameplay we saw in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. While nowhere near as deep or rewarding as that game, Lil Gator Game is absolutely full to bursting with adorable, endearing, charming personality as players take on the role of a young anthropomorphic alligator trying to rally their friends to join them in their make-believe game that casts them as the epic hero. While not without its flaws (particularly, repetitive scenery and no map), this is still a wonderful entry in the genre well worth playing.
Lost in PlayGraphic AdventureA-
tl;dr Lost in Play is an absolutely charming family-friendly Graphic Adventure where players take the role of two children playing both in the real world and in their make-believe imaginary world. The presentation is adorable, the characters are wonderfully lovable, the puzzles are clever, and the gameplay is highly accessible. There are maybe a few small complaints here and there, but overall this is an outstanding entry in the genre that’s sure to bring a smile to your face.
Momodora: Moonlit FarewellMetroidvaniaA-
tl;drMomodora: Moonlit Farewell is a Metroidvania that greatly improves on the previous game, Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight, resulting in a game with a gorgeous presentation, challenging but satisfying combat, and pretty good level design and progression. And while I do think there’s room for improvement, this is still an outstanding Metroidvania that every fan of the genre should play.
Monster SanctuaryTurn-Based Monster Collecting RPG / MetroidvaniaA-
tl;drMonster Sanctuary takes Turn-Based Monster-Collecting RPG gameplay and places it in a side-scrolling Metroidvania. I wish the game went farther to incorporate its Metroidvania elements into the game, but overall it’s hard to complain when this is a top-notch Monster Collecting RPG, and one with a lot of depth to its gameplay. Fans of the genre will find it well worth playing.
My Friend PedroAction-Platformer / 2-Stick ShooterA-
tl;drMy Friend Pedro is an Action-Platformer with Two-Stick Shooter controls that has players involved in acrobatic gunfights at the command of a talking banana. This game’s intense, ridiculous action is a blast to play, and while there’s a bit of repetition here and there, for the most part this game does an amazing job keeping things fresh and entertaining. A must-have for action game fans.
Neon AbyssAction-Platformer / 2-Stick Shooter / RoguelikeA-
tl;drNeon Abyss is an Action-Platformer with Roguelike elements that feels a lot like the designers were going for a side-scrolling neon-lit Binding of Isaac, and they largely hit their mark spot-on. Only a few technical flaws keep this game from reaching the same height as that classic Roguelike, but it’s still a phenomenal Action game.
No More Heroes 2: Desperate StruggleSpectacle FighterA-
tl;drNo More Heroes 2 improves on the first game in nearly every way, delivering the same great action and outlandish presentation, but with better graphics, better controls, streamlined game design, better minigames… really, the only thing I can find fault with here is the game’s camera is still a pain and the visuals are a bit dated. However, aside from that, this game is an all-around fantastic Spectacle Fighter that should be played by anyone who enjoys the genre… at least as long as they don’t mind a lot of misogyny and an immature sense of humor.
Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of HonjoVisual Novel / Graphic Adventure / HorrorA-
tl;drParanormasight is a Visual Novel with Graphic Adventure and Horror elements following multiple characters who possess “curse stones”, and are enticed to hunt down and use their curses to kill each other to resurrect a friend or loved one. This game has a wonderful Rashomon-style plot, excellent fourth wall-breaking puzzles, and a beautiful art style, all for only $20. It has a few issues, and a somewhat silly premise, but overall this is an outstanding Visual Novel and Graphic Adventure, and in particular fans of those genres who enjoy dark stories of the occult should absolutely consider this a must-have.
PentimentGraphic AdventureA-
tl;dr Pentiment is a Graphic Adventure that follows a 16th century artist trying to solve a murder mystery. The characters and story are great, the dedication to creating an accurate depiction of the time period is phenomenal, the presentation and especially the sound design are incredible, and the game mechanics truly give you the sense that your character choices are giving you the freedom to investigate the crime in your own unique way. The game’s more relaxed pacing may not appeal to everyone, but overall this is a must-have for any fans of the Graphic Adventure genre.
Persona 4 GoldenTurn-Based Monster Collecting JRPGA-
tl;dr Persona 4 Golden on Nintendo Switch is a remaster of the PlayStation Vita remake of the original PlayStation 2 release of Persona 4, and this is still one of the best games in this series and the genre as a whole, even if it has aged somewhat. It’s not as flashy as Persona 5, but Persona 4 features a wonderful story with great characters, excellent gameplay, and this is overall a great port of the definitive version of the game. If you’re a JRPG fan with a Nintendo Switch, this game is a must!
Radiant SilvergunBullet Hell ShmupA-
tl;dr Radiant Silvergun is a Bullet Hell Shmup that remains one of the greatest games in the genre thanks to its wide selection of weapons, its excellent level design, and its phenomenal boss design. The high challenge level and technical nature of the gameplay may make this less-appealing to newcomers to the genre, but every serious Shmup fan should consider this game an absolute must-have.
Return of the Obra DinnFirst-Person Graphic AdventureA-
tl;drReturn of the Obra Dinn is a Graphic Adventure that has players using a magical pocket watch to investigate the deaths on a doomed ship at sea to try and match each of the bodies with their proper identities, cause of death, and killer. The presentation here is phenomenal and unique, the gameplay is absolutely inspired and cleverly balanced, and the story being told is truly thrilling. There are a few inconveniences that make the end drag on a bit, but overall this is an outstanding title that’s one of the finest games I have played in this genre, and a must-have for anyone looking for a truly great detective game.
Shantae and the Pirate’s CurseMetroidvaniaA-
tl;drShantae and the Pirate’s Curse is a Metroidvania with some of the best-animated pixel art you’re likely to find in a videogame, and the gameplay is top-notch as well, even if it’s not doing anything especially new or novel. If you’re a fan of the genre, consider this game a must-have.
Shantae: Half-Genie HeroAction-Platformer / MetroidvaniaA-
tl;drShantae: Half-Genie Hero is an Action-Platformer with Metroidvania elements that takes the series’ already-amazing presentation to new levels with gorgeous, exquisitely-animated hand-drawn visuals. And while some players may not be thrilled with this game dialing back the series’ Metroidvania elements, the gameplay here is still plenty of fun and well worth playing for fans of 2D Platforming action.
Sonic ManiaPlatformerA-
tl;drSonic Mania is a Platformer that mixes classic throwback levels with newer, remixed stage design to create something unique and refreshing that stands as the best the series has ever been. It may not top Mario in my book, but it’s a must-have game regardless.
Thank Goodness You’re Here!Graphic AdventureA-
tl;dr Thank Goodness You’re Here! is a Graphic Adventure where players take the role of a quiet, diminutive salesman wandering around an absurd British town, helping the locals with their silly problems. This game is absolutely full of great humor, it’s wildly creative, and it manages to keep surprising you as you play it. It’s a bit too easy to get lost or not know where you need to go next, but this game’s wonderful humor and adorable charm far outweigh any issues it has. If you’re looking for a great comedy game, this is a must-play.
The Cosmic Wheel SisterhoodGraphic Adventure / Visual NovelA-
tl;dr The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood is a game with Graphic Adventure and Visual Novel elements that puts players in the role of an exiled witch who makes a forbidden deal with a powerful and ominous entity, starting a chain of events that has her reading cards to foretell the future for others in her coven during a highly contentious time This game’s story, characters, and soundtrack are all excellent, and while the card creation elements are poorly-explained, this is a minor complaint about a game that not only weaves a thoughtful and emotional story, but makes you the one weaving much of that story. I cannot recommend this enough.
The MessengerAction-Platformer / MetroidvaniaA-
tl;drThe Messenger is an Action-Platformer that later in the game unfolds into a Metroidvania with strong gameplay, nostalgic visuals, and a great sense of humor, and it’s difficult without being as punishing as the Ninja Gaiden games that clearly inspired it. It’s just a pity that some design choices do still cause some frustration here and there.
ThumperMusic-RhythmA-
tl;drThumper is a music-rhythm game that’s nothing like other games in the genre, making it into a simple but compelling high-speed race into dark, hostile territory with an aggressive thumping soundtrack and visuals ripped from heavy metal album covers.
TimespinnerMetroidvaniaA-
tl;drTimespinner is a Metroidvania about a time-traveling girl looking to use her abilities to take down the evil empire that destroyed her village, or perhaps find a way to set things right. This is a game that is very clearly trying to imitate Castlevania: Symphony of the Night in numerous ways, and for the most part it does a stellar job of it, though the game is overall smaller and its map more spread out, which lead to some other issues. However, while it may not be quite as good as Symphony, it’s still a superb Metroidvania, and one well worth playing for fans of the genre.
Toodee and TopdeePuzzle-PlatformerA-
tl;drToodee and Topdee is a family-friendly Puzzle-Platformer that has players swapping between two characters – one who controls like a Platformer, and one who controls like a Top-Down character-driven Puzzle Game character. This game’s fantastic level design makes wonderful use of the game’s central gameplay mechanic, and supplements it with a nice presentation and adorable characters. There are a few places where this game could have been improved, but overall this is a phenomenal Puzzle game that fans of the genre should definitely play.
TransistorTop-Down Action-RPGA-
tl;drTransistor is a Top-Down Action-RPG where combat involves bursts of action interspersed with the ability to stop time and set up a powerful series of automated attacks. It’s refreshingly original and has a superb presentation, although the combat can at times feel a bit uneven.
Unravel TwoPuzzle-PlatformerA-
tl;drUnravel Two is a family-friendly Puzzle-Platformer that has you playing as a pair of small yarn-creatures as they use their yarn to help each other get past various obstacles in a real world environment. The presentation, while not on par with other versions, is still fantastic, and the puzzles are superb, whether you’re playing solo or in co-op. The only thing holding this game back is its short length, but with its low price, this game is absolutely worth getting on Switch if you don’t already have it elsewhere.
Valkyria ChroniclesTurn-Based Strategy-RPGA-
tl;drValkyria Chronicles is a Turn-Based Strategy RPG that does a few unique and interesting things with the genre while delivering an absolutely gorgeous anime-inspired cel-shaded presentation. A must-have for fans of the genre.
ValleyFirst-Person PlatformerA-
tl;drValley is a First-Person game without much in the way of shooting and without any difficult puzzles, but with some really excellent platforming mechanics and great atmosphere (so long as you don’t mind its cringe-worthy story and the graphical downgrade from other platforms). The game isn’t very difficult, and it sadly doesn’t make the fullest use of the great potential of its gameplay, but it has enough moments of pure joy during its short length that it’s worth a look.
Vitamin Connection2-Stick Shooter / ArcadeA-
tl;drVitamin Connection is a Two-Stick Shooter that splits up the ship’s functions between two Joy-Cons in a way that makes this game ideal for two-player co-op. It’s got an appealing presentation, a great soundtrack, and makes some really clever use of the Joy-Cons’ functionality, and really the only negative things I can say about it are that it’s not a game you can play in portable mode, and it’s not a game you’ll really want to play solo. But if you have a friend to join you, this game is a must-have.
WandersongPuzzle-PlatformerA-
tl;drWandersong is a Puzzle-Platformer that has players in the role of a bard looking to save the world by singing different musical notes to solve puzzles. Despite its simple, unimpressive graphics and lack of challenging gameplay, this game has an absolutely charming presentation, a wonderful story, excellent music, and is overall a fantastic experience for all ages.
What the Golf?Sports (Golf) / Misc.A-
tl;drWhat the Golf? Is a family-friendly game that starts with the basic concept of golf and then re-works it and messes with its basic fundamentals in as many ways as possible. The result is a game with tons of variety, a great sense of humor, and a surprisingly fun multiplayer mode. Definitely worth a try even if you’re not a fan of golf.
