Ratyboy Adventures, released in 2023 on Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, is a 3D Platformer where players control an anthropomorphic rat trying to collect all of the cheese in each room as quickly as possible. The game doesn’t tell you this, but that’s the goal.
The presentation here features colorful 3D visuals with a simple character model for your character, backed by extremely repetitive upbeat music. In short, it’s a presentation that seems good for maybe a few minutes, but then it quickly becomes apparent how lacking it is.
As for the gameplay, it’s the same story – at first it seems competent, decent even. But after a few minutes, the problems increasingly start stacking up. Terrible camera controls that force you to babysit the camera, terrible control over turning around, unsatisfying jumping mechanics, poor signposting, poor level design that forces you to work your way through a lot of tedious jumps if you miss one due to how the level is laid out. Repetitive levels. Lack of overall gameplay variety.
As a result, what starts out seeming like a decent but unspectacular 3D Platformer within the first few minutes turns into something tedious, frustrating, and outright terrible quickly after starting. And while the standard price of this game of $10 is absolutely absurd, that’s clearly just to make it seem like a great deal when it occasionally shoots down under $1. I do not believe it is worth even that low price. In short, I do not recommend Ratyboy Adventures. Do not buy this game.
tl;dr – Ratyboy Adventures is a 3D Platformer where players take the role of an anthropomorphic rat collecting all of the cheese in each of the game’s levels. Unfortunately, while the game initially seems okay, it doesn’t take long to reveal it is absolutely loaded with a laundry list of problems. The result is a game that’s tedious and frustrating to play, and one I cannot recommend. Do not buy this.
