Here’s the games I have reviewed so far on the Nintendo Switch in this category, from best to worst. Note: If multiple games have the same score, they will be sorted alphabetically.
Best Games for Couch Multiplayer (Co-Op)
| Game | Genre | # of Players | Grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Borderlands Legendary Collection | Compilation / First-Person Shooter | 1-2 Co-Op (Local, Online), 2-4 Co-Op (Online) | A+ |
tl;drBorderlands Legendary Collection is a compilation of Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition, Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, all phenomenal “looter shooter” First-Person Shooters that combine the genre with loot-collecting mechanics of games like Diablo. These are also some of the best co-op games ever made, and the Nintendo Switch versions make careful cuts to the bring the game to the Nintendo Switch mostly intact. On top of that, this is an outstanding value at $50. Unless you already have these games on another platform, consider Borderlands Legendary Collection a must-have on the Nintendo Switch. | |||
| Diablo III: Eternal Collection | Top-Down Action-RPG | 1-4 Co-Op (Local, Local Wireless, Online), Online Leaderboards | A+ |
tl;drDiablo III is the loot-hunting Action-RPG that is currently the standard for the genre, and this is an excellent port that sacrifices little in the transition to the Switch and even adds in a few things. This is one of the best co-op games on the Switch, whether you’re sitting on the same couch or playing online, and it has a huge wealth of content. If you do not already have this game on another platform, you should definitely consider getting the Switch version. | |||
| Diablo Prime Evil Collection | Top-Down Action-RPG | 1-4 Co-Op (Local, Local Wireless, Online), Online Leaderboards | A+ |
tl;drDiablo Prime Evil Collection is a Compilation that includes the absolute must-have Top-Down Action-RPG Diablo III: Eternal Collection, as well as the massively disappointing Diablo II: Resurrected, along with a few nice cosmetic items. While this is an uneven package, the price is so good that anyone buying Diablo III on the Nintendo Switch (and you really should) is better off getting this package instead, as it includes more content for the same price. | |||
| Kirby and the Forgotten Land | 3D Platformer | 1-2 Co-Op (Local), Additional Online Content | A+ |
tl;drKirby and the Forgotten Land is a family-friendly 3D Platformer that marks Kirby’s first fully-fledged 3D adventure, and it is an outstanding game that is one of the best titles in the Kirby franchise. While I have a few complaints about choppy background animations and a relatively easy difficulty level, overall this game is an absolute blast to play, full of personality and originality, all while drawing inspiration from some of the best Mario and Donkey Kong games, as well as Kirby’s own 2D adventures. If you enjoy Platformers, you should absolutely get this game. | |||
| Portal Companion Collection | Compilation / First-Person Platformer / Puzzle | 1-2 Co-Op (Local Split-Screen / Online) | A+ |
tl;drPortal Companion Collection is a Compilation of the physics-based First-Person Platformer / Puzzle games Portal and Portal 2. These are two of the greatest games ever made, and this is a pretty comprehensive port with performance that makes it the best console release these games have ever seen. This is an outstanding package, and its outstanding price of $20 makes it a game that you should absolutely add to your collection if you don’t own it already… and perhaps even if you do. | |||
| Borderlands: The Handsome Collection | Compilation / First-Person Shooter | 1-2 Co-Op (Local, Online), 2-4 Co-Op (Online) | A |
tl;drBorderlands: The Handsome Collection is a compilation of Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, both phenomenal “looter shooter” First-Person Shooters that combine the genre with loot-collecting mechanics of games like Diablo. These are also some of the best co-op games ever made, and the Nintendo Switch versions make careful cuts to the bring the game to the Nintendo Switch mostly intact. In fact, the only thing that keeps me from saying this package is an absolute must-have is the existence of the Borderlands Legendary Collection, which is a much better value as a package. However, even if the Legendary Collection is clearly the better way to go, it doesn’t change that this is a phenomenal collection of must-have games well worth owning on the Nintendo Switch. | |||
| Borderlands Collection: Pandora’s Box | Compilation / First-Person Shooter / Graphic Adventure / Visual Novel | 1-2 Co-Op (Local, Local Wireless, Online), 2-4 Co-Op (Online) | A |
tl;drBorderlands Collection: Pandora’s Box is a Compilation containing all six Borderlands games released on the Nintendo Switch thus far, including four First-Person Shooters and two Graphic Adventure/Visual Novel games. All of these games are good, and a few are absolute must-haves. The $150 price tag is steep, but still a good savings… however, when this bundle goes on sale, it is an absolute steal that is definitely worth getting. | |||
| Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity | Action Brawler | 1-2 Co-Op (Local Split-Screen) | A |
tl;drHyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, like the first Hyrule Warriors game, is a “musou”-style game in the same vein as the Dynasty Wars series. This time, this game ties directly into the plot of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, exploring the events that preceded that game in some creative ways. What’s more, the presentation, the visuals and music, the style, and numerous gameplay elements all tie back to Breath of the Wild. On top of that, the split-screen co-op here is absolutely phenomenal. Only a few flaws here (like occasionally repetitive combat and some frequent nasty slowdown) keep this game from true greatness, but even with these flaws this is still an outstanding game that most Switch owners would do well to check out. | |||
| It Takes Two | 3D Platformer | 2 Co-Op (Local Split-Screen, Local Wireless, Online) | A |
tl;drIt Takes Two is a 3D Platformer with a co-op focus that requires two players to play. This game’s asymmetrical co-op gameplay is phenomenal, with great level design, puzzle design, and boss design. The story is pretty delightful too, with fun characters and great voice acting, along with some wonderful sound design. If you have a friend to play with, this is an absolute must-have co-op game. | |||
| LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga | Open-World 3D Action-Platformer / Third-Person Shooter | 1-2 Co-Op (Local Split-Screen) | A |
tl;drLEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is yet another game in Traveller’s Tales’ family-friendly franchise of LEGO Open-World 3D Action-Platformers, with this game revisiting all nine numbered Star Wars films with entirely new gameplay. This is the LEGO game that gets everything right – the new Third-Person Shooter gameplay helps to bring players closer to the action, the comedy is as great as it’s ever been, the presentation is gorgeous, and the world provides lots of interesting places to explore. This is not just a great LEGO game, it’s a great Star Wars game, and just a great game overall. If you only ever play one Traveller’s Tales LEGO game, this is the one to play. | |||
| Minecraft | Open-World Action-RPG / Misc. | 1-4 Co-Op (Local Split-Screen), 2-8 Co-Op (Online) | A |
tl;drMinecraft is a family-friendly Open-World sandbox game with Action-RPG elements that has you deconstructing and rebuilding the world at your whim, with endless possibilities for those looking to create or explore. The Nintendo Switch version is not the ideal version of the game, and this version also still bears the bugs that every version of the game seems to have, but it is still a must-play game that’s absolutely worth playing despite this. | |||
| Overcooked Special Edition | Arcade / Party | 1-4 Co-Op / Competitive (Local) | A |
tl;drOvercooked is an Arcade/Party game where up to four players cooperate to try to prep and cook dishes to order in increasingly crazy kitchens. It’s a fast, frenzied experience that makes for one of the finest co-op experiences available on the Switch. | |||
| Overcooked! 2 | Arcade / Party | 1-4 Co-Op / Competitive (Local, Online) | A |
tl;drOvercooked 2, like the first game, is an Arcade/Party game where up to four players cooperate to try to prep and cook dishes to order in increasingly crazy kitchens. And like the first game, it’s a fast, frenzied experience that makes for one of the finest co-op experiences available on the Switch, with subtle improvements throughout that give it a slight edge over the original. | |||
| Overcooked! All You Can Eat | Compilation / Arcade / Party Game | 1-4 Co-Op / Competitive (Local, Online) | A |
tl;drOvercooked! All You Can Eat is a Compilation containing enhanced versions of the first two Overcooked games, both family-friendly Arcade-style Party Games with a strong focus on co-op play. While I don’t think the Overcooked games have quite managed to maintain their legendary status as the years have passed, these are still two of the best co-op games ever made, and this package adds multiple features, enhancements, and new content to ensure that this is the definitive version of both games, all at a very reasonable price. I wouldn’t recommend this for players who already own both Overcooked games, but for anyone else who enjoys co-op gameplay, this is absolutely worth getting. | |||
| Pikmin 3 Deluxe | Real-Time Strategy / Action-RPG | 1-2 Co-Op / Competitive (Local Split-Screen), Online Leaderboards | A |
tl;drPikmin 3 Deluxe is an outstanding and unique spin on the Real-Time Strategy genre that puts the focus on exploration and puzzle-solving rather than strategic combat, and this version of the game adds a slew of new features, including multiple good control options, and more extensive co-op play that I would argue is the absolute highlight of the game. Unless you played the original version of this game on Wii U and have zero interest in the new co-op play, consider this a game that you absolutely should not miss. | |||
| Rocket League | Racing / Sports (Soccer / Basketball / Hockey / Misc.) | 1-4 Team Competitive (Local Split-Screen), 2-8 Team Competitive (Local Wireless, Online) | A |
tl;drRocket League has players using cars to play soccer, hockey, and basketball, and it is an absolute blast to play. It still runs smoothly on the Switch, albeit with reduced resolution, and it’s loaded with options and a wealth of multiplayer features. What’s more, the change to free-to-play has made it even easier to take the plunge, as it not only removes the entry fee and the need to subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online for online play, but it actually has less monetization now than when I first reviewed it. Unless you have this game on another platform, you absolutely should have it on your Nintendo Switch. | |||
| Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury | Compilation / 3D Platformer / Open-World | 1-4 Co-Op (Local, Online) | A |
tl;drSuper Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is a Compilation of two 3D Platformers – an upscaled and much-improved port of Super Mario 3D World, and the all-new Open-World game Bowser’s Fury. On their own, each wouldn’t hold a candle to Mario’s best adventures – 3D World isn’t nearly as ambitious as Odyssey or Galaxy, and Bowser’s Fury is too short. However, combined they come very close to that same level of quality, and the resulting package is a must-have for Mario fans. | |||
| TowerFall | Action-Platformer / Arcade | 1-4 Co-Op (Local), 2-6 Competitive (Local) | A |
tl;drTowerFall has up to six players in a furious battle shooting arrows at one another or teaming up against enemies in a challenging and rewarding action-packed experience with a fantastic presentation, and with exclusive content that makes the Switch version of the game the definitive way to play it. It’s a bit on the tough side, but if you enjoy skill-based platforming and especially if you want to play with friends, TowerFall is absolutely a game you should own. | |||
| Yoshi’s Crafted World | Platformer | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | A |
tl;drYoshi’s Crafted World is a family-friendly Platformer that takes the series’ gameplay into a world made of cardboard and other crafting materials, making the entire game look like you’re playing through a child’s diorama. The game really explores this idea well, using it for all sorts of interesting surprises and twists on the gameplay, with some good co-op play and a low challenge level making it ideal for youngsters while still giving more seasoned players challenges to pursue. It’s not perfect, but even so it’s the best game in the Yoshi series since Yoshi’s Island, and a must-have for fans of Platformers. | |||
| Assault Android Cactus+ | 2-Stick Shooter | 1-4 Co-Op (Local), Online Leaderboards | A- |
tl;drAssault Android Cactus is a 2-Stick Shooter that has some fun, unique mechanics and a lot of great, intense action. It’s a blast to play in co-op, and the Switch version is the definitive version of the game. I only wish the sub-weapon dodge-swapping mechanic was better-utilized, and the levels looked more distinct. But those are minor complaints about what is a fantastic game on the Switch. | |||
| Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition | First-Person Shooter | 1-2 Co-Op (Local, Online), 2-4 Co-Op (Online) | A- |
tl;drBorderlands is a First-Person Shooter that combines the genre with gameplay progression comparable to something like Diablo, and the result is one of the best co-op experiences you will ever find, both locally and online. While the Nintendo Switch version has some compromises made to its visuals and its split-screen co-op drops down from 4 players to 2, this game still plays great, and it’s an absolute must-have for fans of First-Person Shooters and especially for fans of co-op. | |||
| Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the Necrodancer Featuring The Legend of Zelda | Top-Down Roguelike / Music-Rhythm | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | A- |
tl;drCadence of Hyrule does an excellent job combining the gameplay of Crypt of the Necrodancer and The Legend of Zelda, and pairing it with an excellent soundtrack… although not without a few issues cropping up here and there. On the whole, it’s still a solid game fans of both series should enjoy. | |||
| Captain Toad Treasure Tracker | 3D Puzzle-Platformer | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | A- |
tl;drCaptain Toad Treasure Tracker is a game where players guide the titular non-jumping character through numerous levels that are each like little puzzle boxes. The puzzles are clever, and the presentation is solid, and this is overall a fantastic puzzle game, although it’s not without a few annoyances. | |||
| Castle Crashers Remastered | Arcade Brawler | 1-4 Co-Op (Local and Online) | A- |
tl;drCastle Crashers Remastered is a port of the 2008 Arcade Brawler with updated visuals, all previously-released DLC, and a new game mode. Well, the new game mode is terrible, but the core game is still as great as ever, and fans of the genre who haven’t already played this game to death on other platforms should consider this one a must-have. | |||
| CastleStorm | Tower Defense / Arcade | 1-2 Co-Op / Competitive (Local Split-Screen / Online) | A- |
tl;drCastleStorm is a side-scrolling Tower Defense game with Arcade-style gameplay elements where players can customize their own castle and then war with opponents in other castles, commanding troops and firing using a ballista to control the battlefield. This is a game that gives players a lot of freedom to make strategic choices, and does a good job making them easy to understand through the game’s campaign. What’s more, this is a fantastic multiplayer game both in co-op and competitive play, local and online (though the online lobbies are empty now), and the Nintendo Switch version is the definitive version of the game, with its excellent touchscreen controls in portable mode. If you enjoy Strategy games and don’t already have this on another platform, you should absolutely give it a try. | |||
| Children of Morta | Top-Down Roguelike Action-RPG | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) (Note: Developer claims online multiplayer will be added later) | A- |
tl;drChildren of Morta is a co-op Action-RPG with Roguelike elements that plays much like Diablo, but instead of loot, the game uses a Roguelike system that has players playing as different members of a family in a way that enhances both the game’s story and its mechanics. While there are areas that could do with improvement, on the whole this is a wonderful Action-RPG and a fantastic co-op experience that fans of the genre should absolutely give a try. | |||
| Collection of Mana | Compilation / Action-RPG | 1-3 Co-Op (Local) | A- |
tl;drCollection of Mana is a compilation of 3 classic Zelda-style Action-Adventure games, two of which are phenomenal titles with superb music and great co-op gameplay that have withstood the test of time and are arguably two of the best games the genre has ever seen (and Final Fantasy Adventure has its good qualities too). However, the lack of extras and absurd price tag makes it hard to give this collection the enthusiastic recommendation it would otherwise deserve. | |||
| Fly Together! | Arcade | 1-8 Co-Op / Competitive (Local) | A- |
tl;drFly Together! Is a family-friendly Arcade-style game like Flight Control, where players control the flight paths of planes as they guide them to airports to deliver passengers. It’s not a new concept, but it’s done exceptionally well here, with particularly great co-op and competitive multiplayer play. The single-player content feels like it could have been fleshed out more, but overall this is an excellent game to add to your rotation of fun multiplayer games on Nintendo Switch. | |||
| Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition | Action Brawler | 1-2 Co-Op (Local Split-Screen) | A- |
tl;drHyrule Warriors is a Dynasty Warriors-style Action Brawler with a Zelda setting and characters. It looks a bit dated and has a few issues here and there, but it’s an absolute blast to play in co-op… once you look up online how to actually play in co-op. | |||
| Jamestown+ | Bullet Hell Shmup | 1-4 Co-Op (Local), Online Leaderboards | A- |
tl;drJamestown+ is a Bullet Hell Shmup that has players blasting 17th century colonial European troops and aliens in outer space. The bonkers setting comes with a fantastic presentation, some wonderful and clever game mechanics that add a lot of strategy, plenty of variety and imagination, and a superb co-op mode. It’s a shame the game’s structure makes you re-play levels repeatedly and forces its story on you over and over again, but overall this is one of the best games in this genre on the Switch. | |||
| Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes | Puzzle / Party Game | 2-Any (2-4 recommended) Co-Op (Local) | A- |
tl;drKeep Talking and No One Explodes is a cooperative puzzle game where one player is defusing a bomb that others can’t see, and the others are relaying instructions from a manual that the bomb defuser can’t see. It’s a really inventive, fun, and unique game that’s sure to be a blast at parties. | |||
| Kirby Star Allies | Platformer | 1-4 Co-Op (Local) | A- |
tl;drKirby Star Allies is a family-friendly Platformer in the Kirby series that largely stays true to the series’ roots, with the main difference being the new “ally” mechanic that has you making helper characters. It’s an audiovisual treat, and an absolute must-have game for those looking for a great kid-friendly co-op experience on the Switch. However, more skilled players looking for a challenge aren’t likely to find it here. | |||
| Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe | Platformer | 1-4 Co-Op / Competitive (Local) | A- |
tl;drKirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe is a re-release of a family-friendly Platformer that was originally released on the Wii. Multiple elements have been remade or expanded on here, including redone visuals, expanded features, and a really enjoyable new “Magolor Epilogue”. This combines with the original game’s excellent gameplay and great multiplayer to make for a truly excellent game. Unfortunately, the added content here doesn’t quite seem to justify the $60 price tag for a game that’s over a decade old, but if you’re a Platformer fan who never played the original, consider this a must-have. | |||
| LEGO City Undercover | Open-World 3D Action-Platformer | 1-2 Co-Op (Local Split-Screen) | A- |
tl;drLEGO City Undercover on Nintendo Switch is an excellent upgrade to what was previously a Wii U exclusive title, one of the best games in Traveller’s Tales’ family-friendly franchise of LEGO 3D Action-Platformers, and an excellent Open-World game. This police spoof is a joy to play, and while it definitely still has areas that need improvement, LEGO fans should consider this a must-play, and those looking for a good Open-World game on Nintendo Switch would do well to give this some consideration. | |||
| Monaco Complete Edition | Top-Down Stealth | 1-4 Co-Op (Local, Local Wireless, Online) | A- |
tl;drMonaco is a Top-Down Stealth game that has you as one of various archetypal members of a crew of criminals breaking into and out of places, robbing them, and trying not to get caught while doing so. It’s a difficult game, but it’s delightful in single-player, and an absolute blast in co-op. Online play requires jumping through the Switch’s usual frustrating hoops, but local and local wireless play is excellent, and on the whole this is still a must-have game for co-op fans on the Switch. | |||
| NeuroVoider | 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike | 1-4 Co-Op (Local), Online Leaderboards | A- |
tl;drNeuroVoider is a combination of Two-Stick Shooter and Roguelike that has you fighting an army of robots, stealing their parts, and then using them to upgrade your own capabilities. It’s an incredibly fun game with great co-op, a fantastic presentation, and tons of variety and customization. The randomized level design and enemy AI could have used a bit of work, but on the whole this is an absolutely fantastic game that should be owned by anyone who enjoys a good Action game. | |||
| Radiant Silvergun | Bullet Hell Shmup | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | A- |
tl;drRadiant Silvergun is a Bullet Hell Shmup that remains one of the greatest games in the genre thanks to its wide selection of weapons, its excellent level design, and its phenomenal boss design. The high challenge level and technical nature of the gameplay may make this less-appealing to newcomers to the genre, but every serious Shmup fan should consider this game an absolute must-have. | |||
| Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game – Complete Edition | Arcade Brawler | 1-4 Competitive (Local), 2-4 Co-Op (Local, Online), Online Leaderboards | A- |
tl;drScott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game is quite simply one of the greatest Arcade Brawlers ever made, and its long-awaited release on Nintendo Switch does not disappoint. While this game still bears some of the flaws of the genre (short length, repetitive combat), it is nevertheless an outstanding experience with tons of depth and a great retro-style presentation that is a must-have for any fan of the genre. | |||
| Soundfall | Top-Down Action-RPG / Music-Rhythm | 1-4 Co-Op (Local / Online) | A- |
tl;drSoundfall is a game that combines Action-RPG and Music-Rhythm elements, where players fight off hordes of enemies and hunt for loot while timing their attacks to the beat of a massive, varied, and overall excellent soundtrack. Some elements of the gameplay and presentation can get a tad repetitive, and there are a few tweaks I would have preferred, but overall this is a truly excellent game well worth playing. | |||
| Streets of Rage 4 | Arcade Brawler | 1-4 Co-Op (Local) / 2 Co-Op (Online) | A- |
tl;drStreets of Rage 4 is a return to Sega’s classic Arcade Brawler franchise after an over 25 year absence, and perhaps the wait was worth it because this is not just the best game in the series, but one of the best games in the genre, with a gorgeous presentation, a fantastic soundtrack, and small but clever improvements to the core gameplay. There are still areas where this game could be improved, but overall this is a must-have game for fans of the genre, as well as co-op Action game fans in general. | |||
| Super Cable Boy | Platformer | 1-2 Co-Op (Local Splitscreen) | A- |
tl;drSuper Cable Boy is a challenging Platformer where players control a Game Boy-like device in a digital world. The visual presentation is striking and fits the game’s themes well, but what really stands out here is the excellent gameplay, which challenges players to swap between different “cartridges” (abilities) to perform some great acrobatic feats. There’s even a solid 2-player co-op mode here as well. In short, if you enjoy challenging Platformers, consider Super Cable Boy a must-have. | |||
| Super Mario Bros. Wonder | Platformer | 1-4 Co-Op (Local, Online), Online Content Sharing | A- |
tl;drSuper Mario Bros. Wonder is a family-friendly Platformer that brings Mario back to 2D with brand new “wonder effects” that transform every level in the game in creative, inventive ways that infuse this game with tons of variety and personality. What’s more, this game has plenty of new multiplayer features and accessibility options to make this game ideal for younger and less-experienced players. This game is far more inspired than the New Super Mario Bros. games that preceded it… just don’t expect something as incredible as the classic games of Mario’s 8-bit and 16-bit eras or you’ll be disappointed. However, while this game doesn’t reach the same heights as Mario’s classic adventures, it is nevertheless a truly excellent Platformer that any fan of the genre should absolutely play. | |||
| Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge | Arcade Brawler | 1-6 Co-Op (Local / Online) | A- |
tl;drTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is an Arcade Brawler that seeks to recapture the magic of the classic Ninja Turtles arcade games, and I don’t think it quite succeeds at that… but that’s okay because it’s a truly phenomenal entry in the genre in its own right, and one loaded with charm, great gameplay, and tons of wonderful little references to the Ninja Turtles franchise that are sure to please series fans and Arcade Brawler fans alike. If that describes you, you should definitely get ahold of this game. | |||
| Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince | Puzzle-Platformer | 1-4 Co-Op (Local, Local Wireless, Online) | A- |
tl;drTrine 4 returns the series to its classic 2D Puzzle-Platformer gameplay, and it is in absolutely fine form here, with jaw-droppingly gorgeous graphics, superb puzzles, and some of the best Co-Op you’re going to find in any game anywhere, with a focus on using the unique abilities of its three protagonists to get past puzzles and obstacles. It’s unfortunate that the combat is sub-standard, because otherwise everything about this game is an absolute triumph. | |||
| Unravel Two | Puzzle-Platformer | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | A- |
tl;drUnravel Two is a family-friendly Puzzle-Platformer that has you playing as a pair of small yarn-creatures as they use their yarn to help each other get past various obstacles in a real world environment. The presentation, while not on par with other versions, is still fantastic, and the puzzles are superb, whether you’re playing solo or in co-op. The only thing holding this game back is its short length, but with its low price, this game is absolutely worth getting on Switch if you don’t already have it elsewhere. | |||
| Vitamin Connection | 2-Stick Shooter / Arcade | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | A- |
tl;drVitamin Connection is a Two-Stick Shooter that splits up the ship’s functions between two Joy-Cons in a way that makes this game ideal for two-player co-op. It’s got an appealing presentation, a great soundtrack, and makes some really clever use of the Joy-Cons’ functionality, and really the only negative things I can say about it are that it’s not a game you can play in portable mode, and it’s not a game you’ll really want to play solo. But if you have a friend to join you, this game is a must-have. | |||
| 1993 Shenandoah | Shmup | 1-4 Co-Op (Local) | B+ |
tl;dr1993 Shenandoah is a Shmup originally intended for release on the Amiga in 1993, but only just now seeing light of day on the Switch. Its old-fashioned design may put off some players, but the excellent upgrade system, solid local co-op play, and unique presentation all combine to make this a pretty unique game that’s worth checking out for fans of the genre. | |||
| Capcom Beat ‘Em Up Bundle | Compilation / Arcade Brawler | 1-4 Co-Op (Local, Local Wireless, Online) | B+ |
tl;drCapcom Beat ‘Em Up Bundle is a collection of seven Arcade Brawler games originally released in arcades from 1989 to 1997. These games range from average to very good, with some of the best games in this collection never previously released on consoles. This collection has some good extras, and a good price. If you’re a fan of the genre, or just looking for a decent action game to play in co-op, this game is well worth getting. | |||
| Cat Quest II | Action-RPG | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B+ |
tl;drCat Quest II, like the first game, is a family-friendly Action-RPG that simplifies numerous elements of the genre to produce something streamlined, user-friendly, and… well, full of puns. And this game builds on its predecessor by adding an exceptional and well thought-out co-op mode. It still may not have the weight of some of the more impactful games in the genre, but it is nevertheless a thoroughly enjoyable game, and one fans of the genre would do well to give a look. | |||
| Catastronauts | Arcade | 1-4 Co-Op (Local) | B+ |
tl;drCatastronauts is a family-friendly multiplayer co-op focused Arcade-style game where players scramble around a spaceship in the midst of a battle with an enemy ship, managing multiple tasks. In short, this game plays kinda’ like Overcooked meets Star Trek, with simple but enjoyable gameplay that makes for an excellent co-op experience. Its single-player is a bit lacking, there’s no online, and the stage variety has nothing on Overcooked, but otherwise this is a great game in that same style, and anyone who enjoys that franchise should definitely give this a try. | |||
| CounterAttack: Uprising | Shmup | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B+ |
tl;drCounterAttack: Uprising is a Shmup with an absolutely terrible presentation, but truly delightful gameplay with a massive wealth of customization options that let you build toward a delightfully powerful loadout. If you enjoy Shmups, this is definitely one you’ll want to give a chance – it’s not much to look at, but it’s got the goods where it counts. | |||
| Crimzon Clover – World EXplosion | Bullet Hell Shmup | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B+ |
tl;drCrimzon Clover is a Bullet Hell Shmup with simple yet fun gameplay mechanics, good stage design and boss design, a ton of action happening on-screen at any given moment, and… a surprisingly easy difficulty level? Shmup veterans may scoff, but the solid game design still makes this worth checking out, and newer players will find this a great game to help them ease into the genre. | |||
| Doom Slayers Collection | Compilation / First-Person Shooter | 1-4 Competitive / Co-Op (Local Split-Screen), 2 Co-Op (Online), 2-12 Competitive (Online) | B+ |
tl;drDoom Slayers Collection is a Compilation of 5 games in the Doom series, plus all DLC – this is every major release in the series except Doom Eternal. These are some truly great First-Person Shooters, and while I have some complaints about each of them (especially Doom (2016), which I still argue is just not very good on Nintendo Switch), but small gripes aside this is a great deal on a fantastic collection of First-Person Shooters. If you’re a fan of the genre who somehow missed out on the Doom series prior to this, this package should be considered a must-buy. | |||
| Fight ‘N Rage | Arcade Brawler | 1-3 Co-Op (Local) / 2 Competitive (Local) | B+ |
tl;drFight’N Rage is an Arcade Brawler that is a love letter to the genre, working in numerous references to many of the genre’s classic games, along with an excellent combat system, good graphics, and plenty of extra unlockable content. While there are a few rough edges, this is overall a must-have for fans of the genre. | |||
| Fury Unleashed | Action-Platformer / 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B+ |
tl;drFury Unleashed combines Action-Platformer, 2-Stick Shooter and Roguelike elements into one great co-op package, with an added fourth-wall breaking “comic book” presentation. If a joyfully action-packed blend of testosterone and Roguelike sounds good to you, this game will not disappoint. | |||
| Get Packed: Couch Chaos | Top-Down Arcade / Party Game | 1-4 Co-Op / Competitive (Local) | B+ |
tl;drGet Packed is a family-friendly Top-Down Arcade / Party Game that has players scrambling to remove items from a property and toss them into a moving truck. The co-op gameplay here is good, but lacking content in a way that ensures it won’t last long. The competitive gameplay, on the other hand, is delightful enough to earn this game a proper spot in your Party Game rotation. | |||
| Good Job! | Puzzle | 1-2 Co-Op (Local Splitscreen) | B+ |
tl;drGood Job! Is a family-friendly Puzzle game that has players solving puzzles that involve them performing tasks in an office (and usually causing plenty of damage in the process). It’s a clever Puzzle game with some wonderful open-ended Puzzle design and some excellent co-op play. Don’t miss it! | |||
| Home Sheep Home: Farmageddon Party Edition | Puzzle-Platformer / Platformer / Party Game | 1-3 Co-Op (Local), 2-4 Competitive (Local) | B+ |
tl;drHome Sheep Home is a family-friendly co-op Puzzle-Platformer and Party Game based on the Shaun the Sheep animated series and films. This game manages to do a great job with all of its disparate elements – the license is scaled-down somewhat, but what’s here does justice to the franchise. The Puzzle-Platformer content is smartly well-crafted, and the Party Game content is fun and varied enough to keep players entertained for a good while. I have some issues with the core Platformer mechanics here, but overall this is an excellent package that does its best to please everyone, and largely succeeds. | |||
| Huntdown | Action-Platformer | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B+ |
tl;drHuntdown is an excellent Action-Platformer that really captures the look and feel of a dystopian ’80s-style future, a la Robocop. The combat here is fairly unique for the genre due to its use of a cover mechanic, and the co-op is excellent. This game may be a tad sluggish, but overall this is an excellent entry into the genre well worth getting. | |||
| Inferno 2 | 2-Stick Shooter | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B+ |
tl;drInferno 2 is a straightforward 2-Stick Shooter that has solid gameplay, a slick presentation, and good Co-Op. It’s a bit on the easy side, but fans of the genre will find it to be an excellent choice, especially for its low price tag. | |||
| LEGO DC Super-Villains | Open-World 3D Action-Platformer | 1-2 Co-Op (Local Split-Screen) | B+ |
tl;drLEGO DC Super-Villains is yet another game in Traveller’s Tales’ family-friendly franchise of LEGO Open-World 3D Action-Platformers, with this being the fourth major crossover into the DC Universe. The focus on the franchise’s villains really gives this game a unique story and tone, and the new character customization system is an absolute highlight of this game, making this one of the best LEGO games in the series thus far. This still isn’t likely to change your opinion if you previously lost interest in the Traveller’s Tales LEGO games, but if you still enjoy them you should consider this a must-have. | |||
| Nintendo Switch Sports | Compilation / Sports (Various) | 1-4 Team Competitive (Local Split-Screen, Local Wireless), 2-16 Competitive / Team Competitive (Online) | B+ |
tl;drNintendo Switch Sports is a worthy successor to the Wii Sports franchise, with excellent versions of Bowling, Chambara (swordfighting), Golf, and Soccer, decent versions of Tennis and Volleyball, and a terrible version of Badminton. The game is colorful and polished, the sports are fun and accessible, and the online play works great. This game doesn’t do much to evolve this series, but it is a well-rounded and highly enjoyable entry in the series nonetheless. | |||
| Pang Adventures | Arcade | 1-2 Co-Op (Local), Online Leaderboards | B+ |
tl;drPang Adventures is an Arcade-style game in the classic Buster Bros series, where you shoot bubbles while dodging them. The game doesn’t do anything to revolutionize the series, but what’s here is done well. | |||
| Part Time UFO | Arcade | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B+ |
tl;drPart Time UFO is a physics-based Arcade-style game that has players grabbing things with a crane connected to a tiny flying saucer. The gameplay here is simple but surprisingly nuanced, there’s a lot of variety and some surprising depth, and while it’s not a very long experience, its low price still makes it well worth adding to your game library. | |||
| PixelJunk Monsters 2 | Tower Defense | 1-4 Co-Op (Local, Online) | B+ |
tl;drPixelJunk Monsters 2 takes the solid Tower Defense gameplay of the first game and gives it a wonderful graphical makeover. It’s a bit overly difficult and at times it feels like you don’t make as much headway against enemies as you’d like, but it’s a blast to play in co-op, and overall a solid entry in the genre. | |||
| PlateUp! | Party Game / Roguelike | 1-4 Co-Op (Local, Local Wireless, Online) | B+ |
tl;drPlateUp! is a family-friendly Arcade-style Party Game with Roguelike elements that is basically an off-brand Overcooked Roguelike. However, while it’s a bit repetitive and its online lobbies are empty, this is still a phenomenal local co-op game, and one that gives players opportunities the Overcooked games lack, like designing your restaurant’s layout. In the end, if you’re looking for a great game to play with friends, this is an outstanding choice. | |||
| Portal Knights | Open-World Action-RPG | 1-2 Co-Op (Local Split-Screen), 2-4 Co-Op (Local Wireless, Online) | B+ |
tl;drPortal Knights is an Open-World Action-RPG that copies Minecraft’s formula, but does it well, improving on multiple areas in Minecraft. Portal Knights features a more technically-appealing presentation, more fleshed-out RPG elements, and streamlines some of Minecraft’s more frustrating elements. That said, it can’t quite match Minecraft’s unique style and sense of exploration and creation, nor Dragon Quest Builders’ story, RPG and town-building elements. However, this game is nevertheless an excellent addition to the genre that’s deserving of standing tall next to those greats. | |||
| River City Girls | Arcade Brawler | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B+ |
tl;drRiver City Girls is an Arcade-style Brawler in the Kunio-Kun series, with gameplay fittingly similar to River City Ransom. The core fighting gameplay is excellent, the presentation is outstanding, and the soundtrack is incredible, but this game also has a lot of rough edges that make this more frustrating at times than it needs to be. This is still absolutely a highlight of its genre, but its flaws bring it down a notch below the even better game it could have been. | |||
| Sky Racket | Shmup / Arcade Brick Breaker | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B+ |
tl;drSky Racket is a family-friendly game that combines the Shmup and Brick Breaker genres into one fun, cohesive style of gameplay with a fantastic, colorful, expressive art style and some absolutely superb co-op play. There are a few frustrating flaws that may result in you taking a few unearned hits on occasion, but otherwise this game is a joy to play, especially if you have a friend to play it with. | |||
| Skylanders: Imaginators | Action-RPG / 3D Platformer | 1-2 Co-Op / Competitive (Local) | B+ |
tl;drSkylanders Imaginators is the sixth and currently final game in this Toys-to-Life series, a family-friendly Action-RPG with Platformer elements. This game doesn’t do anything truly major to shake up the formula, but rather refines it, making for the best game in the franchise. What’s more, the Nintendo Switch version is arguably the best game in the series thanks largely to the game not needing a “portal” device, and saving your Skylanders figurines so you don’t have to keep scanning them. Unfortunately, by 2022 this is also by far the most expensive version of the game, meaning that as fantastic as it is, you’re probably better off spending less to play any other version of the game. | |||
| Snipperclips – Cut It Out Together! | Puzzle-Platformer | 1-4 Co-Op (Local) | B+ |
tl;drSnipperclips is a Puzzle-Platformer where up to four players control anthropomorphized Joycon controllers snipping off parts of one another to get into shape to solve puzzles. It’s a fun concept that’s well-executed, with a lot of great all-ages Co-Op gameplay. It’s nothing revolutionary or impressive, and there are a few rough edges, but overall this is a solid game worth playing. | |||
| Squad 51 Vs. The Flying Saucers | Shmup | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B+ |
tl;drSquad 51 Vs. The Flying Saucers is a Shmup inspired by classic 1950s Sci-Fi B-Movies, and the way this game recreates the presentation of those old films is nothing short of jaw-dropping. The gameplay here is quite good too, though it does have a few small issues, and the Nintendo Switch version’s loading screens are annoying. Still, overall this is a must for Shmup fans and well worth checking out anyone with a fondness for classic cinema. | |||
| Super Hydorah | Bullet Hell Shmup | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B+ |
tl;drSuper Hydorah is a Bullet Hell Shmup that is very clearly imitating the classic Gradius games, and for the most part, it succeeds at this brilliantly. The music is forgettable, and the power-up system is a bit more limited than the Gradius games, but the gameplay here is still superb, and the game does some really inventive stuff with Co-Op, especially with the surprisingly good Robot Chase minigame. Definitely worth a look for fans of the genre. | |||
| Super Mario Party | Party Game / Minigame Collection | 1-4 Competitive / Team Competitive / Cooperative (Local / Online) | B+ |
tl;drSuper Mario Party is the eleventh game in Nintendo’s family-friendly Party Game Minigame Collection series. This game has a ton of different game modes, and while some aren’t so great, others are fantastic. The minigames themselves are fun, varied, and make some clever use of the Joy-Con controller. On that note, you will need Joy-Cons to play this game, and don’t bother with the online play (it’s horrible). Likewise, this isn’t a game you’ll want to play in single-player. However, if you’re looking for a fun time in a party setting, this game does a fantastic job and is a must-have for casual multiplayer fans on the switch. | |||
| Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble | Arcade / 3D Platformer / Party Game | 1-2 Co-Op (Local Split-Screen / Local Wireless / Online), 2-4 Competitive (Local Split-Screen / Local Wireless), 2-16 Competitive (Online) | B+ |
tl;drSuper Monkey Ball Banana Rumble is a fantastic entry in this family-friendly franchise of Arcade-style 3D Platformers about rolling monkeys in balls toward a goal. This release struggles with some performance issues, but its superb level design and excellent multiplayer both online and offline make for an absolutely delightful game well worth getting, and a must-have for fans of the series. | |||
| Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection | Compilation / Arcade Brawler / Fighting Game / Action-Platformer | 1-4 Co-Op (Local, Local Wireless, Online), 2 Competitive (Local, Local Wireless, Online) | B+ |
tl;drTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection is a Compilation of 13 of Konami’s classic Ninja Turtles games, with the highlights being 2 different versions of the original Arcade game, 2.5 versions of Turtles in Time, and the frequently overlooked NES game Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project. Add to this a massive collection of extras and behind-the-scenes content, and this is a must-have collection for Arcade Brawler enthusiasts… even if it’s padded out with a lot of non-Arcade Brawler games that range from mediocre to outright terrible. | |||
| Trine 2: Complete Story | Puzzle-Platformer | 1-3 Co-Op (Local, Online) | B+ |
tl;drTrine 2 is one of the highlights of its series, and of Puzzle-Platformer games in general, with its wonderful focus on using each of its three characters’ unique abilities to solve puzzles becoming even better in Co-Op play. It still suffers from sub-standard combat, and its stunning visuals have aged a bit in the time since it was first released nearly a decade ago, but make no mistake, this is a must-have game for fans of the genre, as well as those looking for an amazing Co-Op experience. | |||
| Trine Ultimate Collection | Compilation / Puzzle-Platformer | 1-4 Co-Op (Local, Local Wireless, Online) | B+ |
tl;drTrine Ultimate Collection is a Compilation that includes all four games in the Puzzle-Platformer series about three characters with different abilities using their unique talents to fight enemies and solve puzzles. This is a treasure trove for anyone who enjoys the genre or is looking for a top-notch Co-Op collection for their Switch, with most of these game being visually-stunning as well. | |||
| WarioWare: Get It Together! | Arcade / Party Game | 1-4 Competitive / Co-Op (Local) | B+ |
tl;drWarioWare: Get It Together! Is the Nintendo Switch entry in the family-friendly Arcade-style Party game that has players trying to complete over 200 “microgames” played in rapid-fire sequences. This game’s take on the formula has players interacting with the games using the varied cast of characters, and while not as ambitious as some entries in the series, it’s still a wonderfully fun time, especially when playing the game’s multiplayer features (most of which need to be unlocked through play). If you’re looking for a fun game to add to your Party Game rotation, WarioWare: Get It Together is an excellent choice. | |||
| Wilmot’s Warehouse | Puzzle | 1-2 Co-Op (Local Split-Screen) | B+ |
tl;drWilmot’s Warehouse is a family-friendly Puzzle game that has players sorting boxes as they see fit, and then looking for specific boxes to fill customer orders. It’s a simple game with compelling puzzle gameplay that lets players decide the best way to go about doing things, and it’s even better in co-op. I wish the game had more gameplay modes that didn’t rush the player, but overall this is a solid entry in the genre, especially if you have a friend to play with. | |||
| Aegis Defenders | Action-Platformer / Tower Defense | 1-2 Co-Op (Local Splitscreen) | B |
tl;drAegis Defenders is a blend of Action-Platformer and Tower Defense that has players running and jumping around a central point they need to defend from enemies, building structures and combining character abilities for new structures. It does a good job of mixing up the way Tower Defense is done, and the co-op here is very good, though the single-player portion could have used better AI, and the platforming sections that start off every level seem a bit superfluous. Overall, this is a solid take on the Tower Defense genre that brings enough unique elements to be worth a look for genre fans. | |||
| BurgerTime Party! | Arcade / Party Game | 1-4 Co-Op / Competitive (Local) | B |
tl;drBurgerTime Party! is a family-friendly reimagining of the classic arcade game that updates the visuals and adds some new stage mechanics, while keeping the core gameplay intact. However, the real joy here are the new multiplayer modes this game adds, that should make this a blast as both a co-op and competitive Party game. Either way, this is a wonderful new take on the original. | |||
| Cat Quest + Cat Quest II: Pawsome Pack | Compilation / Action-RPG | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B |
tl;drCat Quest + Cat Quest II: Pawsome Pack is a Compilation of two family-friendly Action-RPGs that simpliy numerous elements of the genre to produce something streamlined and user-friendly, albeit lacking the weight of some of the more impactful games in the genre. This physical compilation is slightly pricier than buying the games separately in digital form, but if you’re looking for a solid pair of Action-RPGs on a cartridge, this Compilation is worth looking into. | |||
| Conduct Together! | Arcade / Simulation | 1-4 Co-Op (Local) | B |
tl;drConduct Together! is a family-friendly Arcade-style game with Simulation elements that has players using simple controls to manage multiple trains and switches. It’s a fun, challenging task of multitasking with some excellent co-op play baked right into the game design. The game’s controls never quite feel intuitive, and I wish the game expanded on its potential, but overall this is a solid “easy to learn, tough to master”-style game, and one that fans of co-op games should absolutely try. | |||
| Cook, Serve, Delicious! 2!! | Arcade / Simulation | 1-2 Co-Op (Local Split-Screen) | B |
tl;drCook, Serve, Delicious! 2!! is an Arcade-style game with Simulation elements that doesn’t play much like Overcooked or Cooking Mama. It’s more like a food version of Simon Says, with multiple steps for some items. The game does a good job keeping things interesting by having you manage multiple things at once, and it makes for a good co-op experience, although it’s frustrating that it doesn’t do a better job to make important information immediately accessible to players in the chaos. | |||
| Cook, Serve, Delicious! 3?! | Arcade / Simulation | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B |
tl;drCook, Serve, Delicious! 3?! is an Arcade-style game with some Simulation elements that has players managing a food truck and serving orders to customers. In many ways, this is the most streamlined game yet in the series, and while this comes with positive and negative qualities, one unambiguously positive addition is the new “Chill Mode” which lets players take on the game’s challenges at a more relaxed pace. Overall, it’s hard to say whether 2 or 3 is the better game, but I can definitely see this being the better pick for more casual players. | |||
| Cook, Serve, Delicious! 2/3 Bundle!! | Compilation / Arcade / Simulation | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B |
tl;drCook, Serve, Delicious! 2/3 Bundle!! contains the two named games, both entries in the Cook, Serve, Delicious series of Arcade-style games with Simulation elements, and both of these games are quite good, with each having their own individual strengths. The bundle is mostly a good deal too, though sometimes the sale price is actually more than the prices of the individual games. Be sure to compare prices before you buy. | |||
| Darksiders Genesis | Top-Down Action-RPG / 2-Stick Shooter | 1-2 Co-Op (Local, Local Wireless, Online) | B |
tl;drDarksiders Genesis is a Diablo-Style Top-Down Action-RPG that’s a prequel and spinoff of the main Darksiders game that focuses on the first game’s protagonist, War, along with new protagonist, Strife (the latter who plays like a Two-Stick Shooter). While it’s a decent game that brings a fair few original ideas to the genre, the lack of loot makes the whole thing feel a lot more repetitive and as a result it’s not quite as engaging as multiple other games in the genre on the Nintendo Switch. | |||
| Death Squared | Puzzle | 1-4 Co-Op (Local) | B |
tl;drDeath Squared is a character-based Puzzle game where players control cube-shaped robots to try to coordinate to solve puzzles. This game is simple yet fiendishly clever, with some superb puzzle design and excellent co-op play. It’s biggest issue is a tendency towards springing surprise traps on the player resulting in a lot of deaths and trial-and-error gameplay. Still, for those who crave a challenge, Death Squared should prove to be an excellent choice within the genre. | |||
| Death’s Hangover | Arcade Brick Breaker | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B |
tl;drDeath’s Hangover is an Arcade-style Brick Breaker where players take the role of a pair of idiot warriors that Death has resurrected to invade Bastard Dracula’s castle and take back the souls that the villain stole while Death was on a bender. It’s a solid entry into its genre, with some unique and fun mechanics and a silly but endearing personality that set it apart. It’s a bit short and lacking features that were in the PC version, but for $5 it’s well worth a look if you want a cheap, fun Arcade-style game. | |||
| Doom (1993) | First-Person Shooter | 1-4 Competitive / Co-Op (Local Split-Screen) | B |
tl;drDoom (1993) is the First-Person Shooter that more or less kick-started the genre in the first place, and after the game’s initial problems were patched out, the Switch version plays beautifully. That said, there are definitely elements of the game that have aged poorly, and the lack of online multiplayer in particular is disappointing. Still, this game is a legend, and this is a superb port, so fans of the genre have reason to celebrate. | |||
| Heave Ho | Platformer / Party Game | 1-4 Co-Op (Local) | B |
tl;drHeave Ho is a Platformer that has players controlling a character’s two hands to try to grasp and grapple their way to an exit. It’s fun in single-player, but this game truly shines in multiplayer. It’s not perfect, but if you have four people who can maybe-sorta’ work together, this is a really fun time. | |||
| Ibb & Obb | Puzzle-Platformer | 2 Co-Op (Local, Local Wireless, Online) | B |
tl;drIbb & Obb is a co-op focused Puzzle-Platformer that requires two players to play. However, if you do have a friend to play with, this is a solid entry in the genre that makes good use of its simple mechanics to deliver some great co-op gameplay. | |||
| Iron Crypticle | 2-Stick Shooter / Arcade | 1-4 Co-Op (Local) | B |
tl;drIron Crypticle is an Arcade-style 2-Stick Shooter that plays like Smash TV with a Ghosts ‘N Goblins aesthetic. It’s a game with good, arcadey action that works well in co-op, though it’s not without its issues here and there. | |||
| Koloro | Auto-Runner | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B |
tl;drKoloro is an Auto-Runner about a girl transformed into a square wall-jumping back and forth in a surprisingly massive number of well-designed levels, with some great co-op levels to play as well. If you’re looking for a simple, challenging, well-designed Platformer, this game is absolutely worth a look. | |||
| LEGO The Incredibles | Open-World 3D Action-Platformer | 1-2 Co-Op (Local Split-Screen) | B |
tl;drLEGO The Incredibles is yet another game in Traveller’s Tales’ family-friendly franchise of LEGO Open-World 3D Action-Platformers, this time with its focus on Pixar’s superhero franchise. This game doesn’t dramatically change the usual Traveller’s Tales formula, but it gets a lot of things right, such as its custom character creator, its early access to the game’s Open-World, and its useful new co-op abilities. I don’t think this game will win over anyone who’s sick of the LEGO franchise at this point, but I do think it’s one of the more underrated games in that franchise. | |||
| Mushihimesama | Bullet Hell Shmup | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B |
tl;drMushihimesama is a Bullet Hell Shmup with a bug theme. As of this writing, the Nintendo Switch release is only available in physical format, and the reduced size of the screen area the gameplay takes place on is frustrating, but beyond these issues this is a very good Shmup that’s well worth playing for genre fans. | |||
| New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe | Platformer | 1-4 Co-Op / Competitive (Local) | B |
tl;drNew Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe is a port of a family-friendly 2012 Wii U Platformer, along with its standalone sequel. This game is absurdly overpriced and horribly unoriginal, and many players will be better off getting Super Mario Maker 2. Having said that, there’s no denying that the gameplay here is still excellent, and the presentation is absolutely polished. If you’re a fan of Platformers or just looking for a simple, straightforward Mario game, you should be more than satisfied with this game. | |||
| Ninjin: Clash of Carrots | Arcade Brawler | 1-2 Co-Op (Local and Online) | B |
tl;drNinjin: Clash of Carrots is a refreshingly unique arcade brawler hidden under a cutesy exterior. While the presentation leaves something to be desired, the gameplay is original and the sense of humor here is amusing. Fans of the genre, don’t let yourself be fooled by the game’s fluffy visuals, it’s well worth your time. | |||
| Nobody Saves the World | Top-Down Action-RPG | 1-2 Co-Op (Local / Online) | B |
tl;drNobody Saves the World is a Top-Down Action-RPG where players take the role of an amnesiac mute protagonist who must save the kingdom using a wizard’s wand that allows him to transform into various forms. This game has a great sense of humor, and an excellent variety of transformations and upgrade options. I do think the emphasis on transformations makes exploration less interesting, and I’m not thrilled with the randomized dungeons, but overall this is an excellent game worth considering for anyone looking for a game that does something a bit different with the old-school 2D Zelda formula. | |||
| Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus | Arcade | 1-2 Co-Op (Local), Online Leaderboards | B |
tl;drPac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus is a decent follow-up to the original Pac-Man Championship Edition, itself a re-imagining of the arcade classic Pac-Man. However, this time around things just feel more cluttered and the game loses the elegant simplicity of the first Championship Edition. However, it’s still fun to play, especially in the new Switch-Exclusive 2P mode, which offers some excellent co-op. Overall, players looking for a decent modern evolution of the classic Pac-Man formula should be mostly pleased with this. | |||
| Pandemic | Strategy / Board Game | 1-4 Co-Op (Local) | B |
tl;drPandemic is one of the finest cooperative board games ever made, and the Nintendo Switch version does a good job of bringing the fun of that game to the console. It’s not going to wow anyone with its features or presentation, but it does a good job of bringing the core gameplay to the Switch. | |||
| Pode | 3D Puzzle-Platformer | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B |
tl;drPode is a nice little co-op Platforming-Puzzle game with endearing characters, pleasant music, and a challenge level that seems like it would be great for parents to play with their kids, or perhaps for a hardcore gamer to play with a casual gamer significant other. | |||
| Psyvariar Delta | Bullet Hell Shmup | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B |
tl;drPsyvariar Delta is a Bullet Hell Shmup containing three versions of the classic game Psyvariar, including a new version made specifically for this release. This is a solid entry in the genre making good use of a graze mechanic called “buzz”, and although I wouldn’t call it exceptional, it’s still worth a look for fans of the genre. | |||
| Putty Pals | Platformer | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B |
tl;drPutty Pals is a Platformer where players control two characters at the same time, or split up the characters between two players. It’s a decent game that’s worth a look, even if it doesn’t do anything especially significant to push the genre forward. | |||
| Quake | First-Person Shooter | 1-4 Co-Op / Competitive (Local Split-Screen), 2-8 Co-Op / Competitive (Online) | B |
tl;drQuake’s release on the Nintendo Switch is a phenomenal port that takes the classic First-Person Shooter gives the visuals an improved framerate and resolution, includes a wealth of features, options, and content, and even some superb gyroscopic motion controls. This is still a port of a very old game, which shows both in its graphics and its gameplay, meaning this will absolutely not be a game for everyone. However, if you’re looking for classic, fast-paced old-school action, this is possibly the best port we could have possibly hoped for of this game. | |||
| Rubber Bandits | Top-Down Arcade / Party Game | 1-4 Co-Op / Competitive (Local), 2-4 Competitive (Online) | B |
tl;drRubber Bandits is a family-friendly Top-Down Arcade / Party Game that has players fighting one another as goofy bandits with rubbery appendages. The sloppy gameplay is both good and bad, but the excellent variety in levels and game modes make this a great game to bring out at parties. Just don’t expect to get the same experience from the game’s online play. | |||
| Startide | 2-Stick Shooter / Bullet Hell Shmup | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B |
tl;drStartide combines 2-Stick shooter and Shmup genre conventions and adds in some novel ideas of its own, with some excellent, fast-paced, quality gameplay… that’s unfortunately marred by a slew of design flaws and annoyances. It’s still very good, but it could have been so much better. | |||
| The LEGO Ninjago Movie Video Game | Open-World 3D Action-Platformer | 1-4 Co-Op (Local) | B |
tl;drThe LEGO Ninjago Movie Video Game is yet another game in Traveller’s Tales’ family-friendly franchise of LEGO Open-World 3D Action-Platformers. This entry in the franchise makes some strong additions to the combat that really bring this game into its own, making it one of the better games in the LEGO franchise, though not so different from prior games that it’s likely to attract those who grew sick of the series prior to this. | |||
| Vinebound: Tangled Together | Arcade / Roguelike | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B |
tl;drVinebound is a family-friendly Arcade-style Roguelike in roughly the same style as Vampire Survivors, but with a focus on co-op play. These co-op elements are well-crafted and really help to set the game apart from others in the genre, and while I do think the game is a tad content-poor and the single-player gameplay seems like an afterthought, this is well worth getting for players looking for a solid co-op experience, especially with this game only setting you back $5. | |||
| Zombie Panic in Wonderland DX | Arcade / Shooting Gallery | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B |
tl;drZombie Panic in Wonderland DX is an Arcade-Style Shooting Gallery game that has players blasting away silly anime-style zombies. This game doesn’t take itself seriously at all, and that’s just fine, because its silly presentation is one of its best qualities, and fits the fast-paced action well. While there are still some places this game could do with improvement, overall it’s an excellent co-op Action game well worth playing. | |||
| A Hat in Time | 3D Platformer | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B- |
tl;drA Hat in Time is a family-friendly 3D Platformer about a spacefaring girl whose ship loses its magical hourglass fuel, and she must content with various cartoony characters to get them back. This game is extremely unpolished and unfocused, with poor graphics and a terrible camera. However, the core gameplay is good and the game is consistently funny and original. Fans of Platformers should definitely give this game a look, so long as they can look past its issues. | |||
| Airport | Arcade | 1-4 Co-Op (Local / Online) | B- |
tl;drAirport is an Arcade-style game that has players directing the flow of car traffic in and near airports. While the title may be a bit misleading, this game nevertheless delivers some simple but deceptively challenging gameplay, excellent co-op, and an appealing presentation. If you’re looking for a simple but fun Arcade-style challenge with good co-op, this game is well worth checking out. | |||
| Arcade Archives Koutetsu Yousai Strahl | Shmup | 1-2 Co-Op (Local), Online Leaderboards | B- |
tl;drKoutetsu Yousai Strahl is a Shmup that doesn’t do anything truly original, but what it does works pretty well and makes for a fun, if a tad easy, entry in the genre. Shmup fans will definitely want to give this one a try. | |||
| Batsugun Saturn Tribute Boosted | Bullet Hell Shmup | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B- |
tl;drBatsugun is arguably the first Bullet Hell Shmup, and it is one that has aged remarkably well. This is a pretty good port of the game too, including its “Special” remixed version. Unfortunately, the $30 price is absurdly high for a game that is over 30 years old, and while I do recommend picking up this game when it goes on sale at a better price, at its standard price it just isn’t worth it. | |||
| Bonkies | Arcade | 1-4 Co-Op (Local) | B- |
tl;drBonkies is a physics-based Arcade-style game that has players working as monkey astronauts to construct shapes out of various blocks they’re given. The controls here has a few frustrating issues weighing the game down, but overall this is a solid game with great co-op. | |||
| Coloring Book | Art Application | 1 | B- |
tl;drColoring Book is, well, a coloring book Application, although you can also create art on a blank canvas as well. The free app acts like a demo for the $7.99 “Creative Edition”, and both versions of the app have a pretty decent selection of tools to make art, even offering support for 4 players at once. However, this application isn’t going to be replacing what’s on your PC or tablet any time soon, and the lack of any way to transfer your art outside the application is disappointing. Still, as a fun toy for kids, Coloring Book does far more than it needed to. | |||
| Cook, Serve, Delicious! | Arcade / Simulation | 1-4 Co-Op / Competitive (Local) | B- |
tl;drCook, Serve, Delicious! is an Arcade-style game with some Simulation elements that has players managing a restaurant and serving orders to customers. I think this is a more frantic game than its sequel, and it has a lot less in the way of variety, but it’s still an enjoyable game that’s worth a look. | |||
| Cook, Serve, Delicious! 1/2 Bundle!! | Compilation / Arcade / Simulation | 1-4 Co-Op / Competitive (Local) | B- |
tl;drCook, Serve, Delicious! 1/2 Bundle! contains the first two games in the Cook, Serve, Delicious series of Arcade-style games with Simulation elements, and both of these games are quite good. The bundle, on the other hand, is of dubious value, and you’ll want to compare the price of this bundle to the price of getting each game on its own. You might just find it less expensive to do the latter. | |||
| Cook, Serve, Delicious, Trilogy! | Compilation / Arcade / Simulation | 1-4 Co-Op / Competitive (Local) | B- |
tl;drCook, Serve, Delicious, Trilogy! contains the first three games in the Cook, Serve, Delicious series of Arcade-style games with Simulation elements, and all three of these games are quite good. The bundle, on the other hand, is only a good deal if you don’t bother waiting for sales, because its sale price is more than the individual cost of the games when they’re on sale. In other words, if you really want to save money, you’re better off getting the individual games when they go on sale. | |||
| Disney Illusion Island | Metroidvania | 1-4 Co-Op (Local) | B- |
tl;drDisney Illusion Island is a family-friendly Metroidvania starring Mickey Mouse, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy as they search an island for missing magical books. The core gameplay here is polished and enjoyable, but doesn’t do anything special, and this game doesn’t make very good use of its Metroidvania mechanics. If you’re looking for an enjoyable Platformer for younger kids this may be worth a look, but most players will find they have better options on Nintendo Switch. | |||
| Doom II (Classic) | First-Person Shooter | 1-4 Competitive / Co-Op (Local Split-Screen) | B- |
tl;drDoom II is a First-Person Shooter that follows directly in the footsteps of the first Doom, and after the game’s initial problems were patched out, the Switch version plays beautifully. That said, there are definitely elements of the game that have aged poorly, and the lack of online multiplayer in particular is disappointing. Plus, it’s hard to ignore the fact that this game is largely a retread of ground broken in the original Doom. Still, this is nevertheless a solid port of a classic well worth playing. | |||
| Doom + Doom II | Compilation / First-Person Shooter | 1-4 Competitive / Co-Op (Local Split-Screen) | B- |
tl;drDoom + Doom II is a Compilation containing the two named games, both First-Person Shooters from the 1990s, with the first being arguably the most influential First-Person Shooter of all time. The two games are still enjoyable today, but this bundle won’t save you a single penny off the separate prices of these games – in fact, it will cost you an extra penny. There are other Doom bundles that can provide more of a savings than this, but I suppose if you want the first two Doom games, and only those two games, this bundle is a sufficient way to get them. | |||
| LEGO Harry Potter Collection | Compilation / 3D Action-Platformer | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B- |
tl;drLEGO Harry Potter Collection is a good Compilation of the two LEGO Harry Potter games, but it’s not a great one. Some performance issues persist, and the preserved lack of continuity between the two included games is disappointing. If you’re a fan of LEGO and/or Harry Potter, you’ll likely still enjoy this, but it definitely feels like it could have been better, especially after all these years since the original releases. | |||
| LEGO Jurassic World | Open-World 3D Action-Platformer | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B- |
tl;drLEGO Jurassic World is a solid port of yet another game in Traveler’s Tales’ family-friendly franchise of LEGO mash-up games with good (though at times simple and repetitive) 3D Action-Platformer gameplay and some minimal Open World elements. This game follows the plot of the first four Jurassic Park films, and while it does a good enough job with that, it feels like a somewhat cynical game that reuses a lot of what all the other LEGO games have done. Not bad, but it’s going to feel very familiar to anyone who’s played any other LEGO game. | |||
| LEGO Marvel Super Heroes | Open-World 3D Action-Platformer | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B- |
tl;drLEGO Marvel Super Heroes is a solid port of one of the better games in Traveler’s Tales’ family-friendly franchise of LEGO mash-up games with good (though at times simple and repetitive) 3D Action-Platformer gameplay and Open World elements (once you get to them). The Nintendo Switch version is inexplicably more expensive despite this game being a decade old now, but if you enjoy LEGO and/or Marvel and want a strong co-op experience that combines both, this is an excellent choice. | |||
| LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 | Open-World 3D Action-Platformer | 1-4 Co-Op (Local Split-Screen) | B- |
tl;drLEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 is yet another game in Traveler’s Tales’ family-friendly franchise of LEGO Open-World 3D Action-Platformers. This game offers more superhero antics in an Open-World, but without any major enhancements that I can think of. The core gameplay is still good, though some players may have tired of it by this point. Basically, if you like Marvel Comics and haven’t yet grown tired of LEGO games, you’ll probably enjoy this. | |||
| Minimal Move | Puzzle-Platformer | 1-2 Co-Op (Local) | B- |
tl;drMinimal Move is a Family-Friendly Puzzle-Platformer where players controlling a pair of alien investigators exploring a strange section of space with altered states of gravity, with players using one character to move blocks left-right or up-down, and the other character to rotate them. These mechanics make for some good gameplay thanks to solid level design, though this is hampered somewhat thanks to controls that do a poor job adapting to the changes in gravity you’ll be dealing with frequently. Still, for Puzzle-Platformer fans, this is well worth checking out. | |||
| Moving Out | Arcade / Party Game | 1-4 Co-Op (Local) | B- |
tl;drMoving Out is an Overcooked-style Party game that has up to four players coordinate to move furniture from a house to a moving van. It’s got a great concept and an excellent presentation, but the game’s controls and physics often make for a game that doesn’t seem to respond properly to your inputs, which can interrupt the fun with frustration. It’s still worth a look, but don’t expect a game anywhere near as fun as Overcooked. | |||
| No Heroes Here | Platformer / Tower Defense / Party Game | 1-4 Co-Op (Local, Online) | B- |
tl;drNo Heroes Here is a Platformer Tower Defense game with strong Party Game elements with a focus on co-op as you and your friends work to defend a castle by crafting the ammunition needed to supply the cannons defending the structure. The co-op play here is solid, but the single-player play really leaves something to be desired. So long as it’s the co-op you’re looking for, I think you’ll be satisfied. | |||
| Puzzle & Dragons Nintendo Switch Edition | Match-3 Puzzle / RPG | 1-4 Co-Op (Local), 2-8 Competitive (Online) | B- |
tl;drPuzzle & Dragons is a version of the long-running family-friendly Match-3 Puzzle game with RPG elements, and overall I think this is a solid port of a somewhat mediocre Puzzle game. It all works well enough, but there doesn’t seem like there is much to the strategy here. However, the cheap price tag and the surprisingly compelling co-op play make this still worth looking into for fans of the Puzzle genre. | |||
| Serious Sam Collection | Compilation / First-Person Shooter | 1-4 Co-Op / Competitive / Team Competitive (Local Split-Screen / Local Wireless) | B- |
tl;drSerious Sam Collection is a Compilation of the alien-blasting First-Person Shooters Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter, Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter, and Serious Sam 3 BFE, along with DLC for the latter two games. This isn’t a comprehensive collection, the first two games run well but show their age in multiple ways, and the third game has some severe performance issues due to a shoddy port job. There’s still a lot of old-school fun to be had, and the multiplayer options here are impressive (unless you want to play online or play Serious Sam 3 in Split-Screen multiplayer), but know that the Nintendo Switch version of this collection comes with some severe compromises. | |||
| Servonauts | Arcade / Party Game | 1-4 Co-Op (Local) | B- |
tl;drServonauts, is a co-op-focused Arcade-style Party Game vaguely similar to Overcooked, where players are robots trying to get the right kind of gas to vehicles in a gas station by connecting hoses to various machines. The core concept here is great, making for some really good co-op play. Unfortunately, this is undermined somewhat by imprecise controls at times. However, even with these issues, co-op fans may still want to give this one a look. | |||
| Sky Rogue | Combat Flight Simulator | 1-2 Co-Op (Local Split-Screen) | B- |
tl;drSky Rogue is a Combat Flight Sim with extremely old-school low-poly graphics. Its gameplay is surprisingly solid, with very stable 2-player splitscreen co-op, and the “Danger Zone” motion-sensing control option is absolutely inspired, but the lack of variety and polish makes the game feel incomplete. | |||
| The Escapists 2 | Top-Down Action-RPG | 1-2 Co-Op / Competitive (Local Split-Screen) 4 Co-Op / Competitive (Online) | B- |
tl;drThe Escapists 2, like the first game, is a Top-Down Action-RPG that puts you in the role of a prison inmate seeking to bust out of jail. The game has a wealth of options and complex systems at work to give players plenty of possibilities for enacting their escape, and this time it does a much better job of explaining to the player how it all works. There are still some issues with tedious gameplay elements, and the excellent multiplayer mode has been cut back somewhat for the Switch version, but on the whole this is a solid entry in the Switch’s library. | |||
| The Lara Croft Collection | Compilation / Action-RPG / 2-Stick Shooter / 3D Platformer | 1-4 Co-Op (Local) | B- |
tl;drThe Lara Croft Collection is a Compilation containing Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, two spin-off games that play very differently from the mainline Tomb Raider series. While the platforming and exploration elements are sorely lacking, the action, puzzles, and co-op multiplayer are all good, making this a fun action-focused game, albeit one that’s less ambitious than the mainline Tomb Raider games. | |||
| Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power | 3D Puzzle-Platformer | 1-3 Co-Op (Local, Online) | B- |
tl;drTrine 3 takes the Puzzle-Platformer series into 3D, retaining the series formula of using three characters with distinct abilities to get past obstacles. However, this change has mixed results – the combat is better, but the platforming is much worse. It’s still a decent game, but it’s not as good as the second and fourth titles in the series. | |||
| Trombone Champ | Music-Rhythm | 1-4 Co-Op / Competitive (Local) | B- |
tl;drTrombone Champ is a family-friendly Music Rhythm game where players try to not only time the notes of their music, but use one of a selection of control schemes (including pretty good motion controls) to ensure it comes out at the right pitch as well. Or more frequently, to attempt that and fail, creating a discordant cacophony that is nevertheless still a delight due to just how silly everything, a silliness this game leans into hard. This isn’t a game you’re likely to play for long stretches of time, but you may want to play it with friends in a party setting, if only to see how ridiculously bad the music gets with everyone performing together. For that reason, this game is well worth trying out. | |||
| Watcher Chronicles | Metroidvania | 1-2 Co-Op (Local, Local Wireless) | B- |
tl;drWatcher Chronicles is a Metroidvania with “Soulslike” elements that’s somewhat lacking in multiple areas, but still offers a worthwhile experience if you’re looking to play this pairing of genres with a friend in co-op. If that’s the case, I think you’ll find a pretty enjoyable experience here. However, if you’re looking to play solo, you have multiple better options on Nintendo Switch. | |||
