Here’s the games I have reviewed so far on the Nintendo Switch in each genre, from best to worst. Note: If multiple games have the same score, they will be sorted alphabetically.
- First-Person Shooter
- Third-Person Shooter
- Flight Sim/Space Combat Sim
- Action Brawler (Musou)

First-Person Shooter
| Game | Genre | Grade | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Borderlands Legendary Collection | Compilation / First-Person Shooter | A+ | |
tl;drBorderlands Legendary Collection is a compilation of Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition, Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, all phenomenal “looter shooter” First-Person Shooters that combine the genre with loot-collecting mechanics of games like Diablo. These are also some of the best co-op games ever made, and the Nintendo Switch versions make careful cuts to the bring the game to the Nintendo Switch mostly intact. On top of that, this is an outstanding value at $50. Unless you already have these games on another platform, consider Borderlands Legendary Collection a must-have on the Nintendo Switch. | |||
| Borderlands Collection: Pandora’s Box | Compilation / First-Person Shooter / Graphic Adventure / Visual Novel | A | |
tl;drBorderlands Collection: Pandora’s Box is a Compilation containing all six Borderlands games released on the Nintendo Switch thus far, including four First-Person Shooters and two Graphic Adventure/Visual Novel games. All of these games are good, and a few are absolute must-haves. The $150 price tag is steep, but still a good savings… however, when this bundle goes on sale, it is an absolute steal that is definitely worth getting. | |||
| Metroid Prime Remastered | First-Person Shooter / Metroidvania | A+ | |
tl;drMetroid Prime Remastered is a remake of a game that combines First-Person Shooter Gameplay with Metroidvania game structure, first released on the GameCube. Not only has Metroid Prime aged incredibly well, but this remake is outstanding, going above and beyond in its graphical improvements, control options, and bonus content. The result is the absolutely definitive version of one of the greatest games ever made. | |||
| Alekon | First-Person Shooter / Misc. | A | |
tl;drAlekon is a family-friendly photography-focused First-Person Shooter where players take pictures of fictional creatures (literally called Fictions), with gameplay that is clearly inspired by the Pokemon Snap franchise. However, more than just being a copycat, Alekon is a wonderfully-accessible, varied, and just overall delightful game that actually manages to rival the Pokemon Snap games to become a truly great game in its own right. Fans of the Pokemon Snap franchise should consider this a must-buy, and anyone curious about photography videogames may want to consider making this game one of their first entries into the genre. | |||
| Borderlands: The Handsome Collection | Compilation / First-Person Shooter | A | |
tl;drBorderlands: The Handsome Collection is a compilation of Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, both phenomenal “looter shooter” First-Person Shooters that combine the genre with loot-collecting mechanics of games like Diablo. These are also some of the best co-op games ever made, and the Nintendo Switch versions make careful cuts to the bring the game to the Nintendo Switch mostly intact. In fact, the only thing that keeps me from saying this package is an absolute must-have is the existence of the Borderlands Legendary Collection, which is a much better value as a package. However, even if the Legendary Collection is clearly the better way to go, it doesn’t change that this is a phenomenal collection of must-have games well worth owning on the Nintendo Switch. | |||
| Doom Eternal | First-Person Shooter | A | |
tl;drDoom Eternal on Nintendo Switch is, of course, a huge visual downgrade from other versions of the game, but it still looks great, is perfectly playable, and not only a more ambitious port than Doom 2016, but a far more successful one too. This is a solid version of a truly phenomenal, visually-stunning (yes, even on Nintendo Switch) First-Person Shooter with great, fast-paced action and a clever and inventive online 2-vs-1 multiplayer mode. If you can play this game elsewhere, definitely do. But if Nintendo Switch is your platform of choice, know that Doom Eternal is a must-play First-Person Shooter that doesn’t lose much in its transition to the handheld platform. | |||
| New Pokemon Snap | First-Person On-Rails Shooter / Misc. | A | |
tl;drNew Pokemon Snap is just about everything fans could want from a sequel to the N64 classic, and improves on the original in numerous ways while still remaining faithful to its formula. This is a beautiful family-friendly On-Rails First-Person Shooter that has you snapping photos of Pokemon, testing your skill with the lens and your ingenuity with other tools at your disposal to capture the best pictures. Its lack of exploration and laid-back nature may not be for everyone, and there are areas where it could still be improved further, but overall this is a marvelous experience that every Pokemon fan will likely want to have. | |||
| Superhot | First-Person Shooter | A | |
tl;drSuperhot is a First-Person Shooter where time slows down to a crawl unless you’re moving. It’s an inspired and unique entry into the genre, and the port to the Nintendo Switch is virtually flawless. I wish the game’s main campaign was longer, but there’s still plenty to do here, and it’s all immensely enjoyable. If you’re a fan of First-Person Shooters, this game is a must-have. | |||
| Bioshock Infinite: The Complete Edition | First-Person Shooter | A- | |
tl;drBioshock Infinite takes this First-Person Shooter series to the skyward city of Columbia, resulting in what I believe to be the best story, the best world-building, the best visuals, and the best gameplay in the series. The Nintendo Switch version runs well, but has the most visual cutbacks made to it out of the entire Bioshock trilogy compared to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 counterparts. Even so, this is a phenomenal First-Person Shooter that still looks and plays great on the Switch, and it’s an absolute must-play game for fans of the genre, especially if you don’t already have it on another platform. | |||
| Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition | First-Person Shooter | A- | |
tl;drBorderlands is a First-Person Shooter that combines the genre with gameplay progression comparable to something like Diablo, and the result is one of the best co-op experiences you will ever find, both locally and online. While the Nintendo Switch version has some compromises made to its visuals and its split-screen co-op drops down from 4 players to 2, this game still plays great, and it’s an absolute must-have for fans of First-Person Shooters and especially for fans of co-op. | |||
| Bulletstorm: Duke of Switch Edition | First-Person Shooter | A- | |
tl;drBulletstorm: Duke of Switch Edition is an over-the-top testosterone-fueled sci-fi First-Person Shooter filled with tons of variety and lots of fun action. It is also a phenomenal port, graphically stunning on the Switch, although sadly the game lacks multiplayer and doesn’t have gyro aiming. Still, despite these omissions, this is a must-have for Switch owners looking for a fun First-Person Shooter. | |||
| Crysis 3 Remastered | First-Person Shooter | A- | |
tl;drCrysis 3 Remastered is an absolute marvel of a First-Person Shooter on the Nintendo Switch, featuring some of the best graphics on the platform, with visuals and performance that far outpaces prior console versions of the game. What’s more, the gameplay has been much-improved over previous entries in the series, with better enemy AI, improved stealth, better pacing and variety. This is an absolute must-have First-Person Shooter campaign. It’s a shame the Nintendo Switch version drops the multiplayer mode that was in the original, but in all other respects, this is a spectacular port to Nintendo’s handheld, and absolutely worth a look for any fans of the genre. | |||
| Crysis Remastered Trilogy | Compilation / First-Person Shooter | A- | |
tl;drCrysis Remastered Trilogy is a Compilation of phenomenal ports of three solid First-Person Shooters that are still visually stunning, outpacing prior console releases of the series. These games are a marvel to see running this well on Nintendo Switch, and only the lack of the original games’ multiplayer and a few other minor issues make this anything less than a trilogy of perfect ports. And at $50, this Compilation is an absolute steal, and any fan of First-Person Shooters on the Nintendo Switch should absolutely give this package a look. | |||
| Journey to the Savage Planet | First-Person Shooter / Metroidvania | A- | |
tl;drJourney to the Savage Planet is a First-Person Metroidvania much in the same vein as Metroid Prime, but with a fantastic sense of humor and a really beautiful and inventive world to explore, as well as surprisingly good local wireless and online co-op. This game is definitely flawed, with various elements that don’t work or things that are desperately needed but missing, but even with these flaws, this is an absolutely incredible game that’s a must-play for Metroidvania fans. | |||
| Metroid Prime 4: Beyond | Open-World First-Person Shooter / Metroidvania | A- | |
tl;drMetroid Prime 4 is a First-Person Shooter and Metroidvania with Open-World sections, and it is an audiovisual tour de force on Nintendo Switch, with a gorgeous world, incredible puzzle design, and some clever gameplay elements. It also disappoints with its underwhelming Metroidvania elements, its half-baked Open World elements, and some truly baffling design choices. The result is a game that, while still outstanding, is a bit underwhelming given the 18 years it took for us to finally see this game release. | |||
| Neon White | First-Person Shooter / Platformer | A- | |
tl;drNeon White is a First-Person Shooter with strong Platformer elements that has players speeding through obstacle course-style levels in heaven trying to gun down demons and get to the exit as quickly as possible using cards that act like weapons. The story and premise may seem odd, but the presentation is memorable, the gameplay is fluid, fast-paced and exhilarating, and the level design is impeccable. If you’re a fan of fast-paced action and First-Person Shooters, you should definitely give this game a try. | |||
| Overwatch Legendary Edition | First-Person Shooter | A- | |
tl;drOverwatch is an online-focused team-based First-Person Shooter with a heavy emphasis on its wide cast of memorable and unique characters with different abilities. This is a good port of a fantastic game, but it sacrifices a lot to make the game work on the Switch. If you can play this game on another platform, that is clearly going to be the better option. Otherwise, the Switch version is excellent, and one of the best First-Person Shooters on the platform. | |||
| Paladins | First-Person Shooter | A- | |
tl;drPaladins is a Free-to-Play online-focused team-based First-Person Shooter with a heavy emphasis on its wide cast of memorable and unique characters with different abilities, comparable to Overwatch. This is an excellent port of a fantastic game, and while I still slightly prefer Overwatch, Paladins has a lot going in its favor, such as its silky-smooth 60FPS framerates and its customizable loadouts. If you’re looking for a great online First-Person Shooter on the Nintendo Switch, you should definitely give this game a try. | |||
| Bioshock Remastered | First-Person Shooter | B+ | |
tl;drBioshock has aged somewhat since its original release in 2007, but it’s still fun to play, and while Rapture may not be as graphically impressive as it once was, it’s still extremely visually-striking, with some of the best world-building ever to be found in a videogame. In the end, this is still an excellent port of a legendary First-Person Shooter, and an absolute must-play for anyone who hasn’t experienced it before, and worth returning to for those looking to revisit that nostalgia. | |||
| Bioshock: The Collection | Compilation / First-Person Shooter | B+ | |
tl;drBioshock: The Collection bundles together the original Bioshock trilogy along with all of its DLC in a package that looks better than its original console releases (though not quite up to par with the Xbox One or PlayStation 4 versions of the games). The first and third of these games are epic, genre-defining games that still play great today, and the second game is still pretty good too. If you’re looking for some great First-Person Shooters on the Switch, this is definitely a good choice. | |||
| Crysis Remastered | First-Person Shooter | B+ | |
tl;drCrysis is a First-Person Shooter that’s been a legendary benchmark on PCs for over a decade, and not only can it run on the Nintendo Switch, but it runs rather well, albeit with the framerate taking a hit in some busy areas. Still, it’s a solid port of a solid single-player First-Person Shooter, and if you’re a fan of the genre it’s a game you should definitely give a look. | |||
| Doom Slayers Collection | Compilation / First-Person Shooter | B+ | |
tl;drDoom Slayers Collection is a Compilation of 5 games in the Doom series, plus all DLC – this is every major release in the series except Doom Eternal. These are some truly great First-Person Shooters, and while I have some complaints about each of them (especially Doom (2016), which I still argue is just not very good on Nintendo Switch), but small gripes aside this is a great deal on a fantastic collection of First-Person Shooters. If you’re a fan of the genre who somehow missed out on the Doom series prior to this, this package should be considered a must-buy. | |||
| Metro Last Light Redux | First-Person Shooter | B+ | |
tl;drMetro Last Light, like its predecessor Metro 2033, is a story-focused First-Person Shooter originally released in 2013, and this version of the game adds improved graphics over the original and extra options. This game is an improvement on its predecessor in pretty much every way, addressing many of the complaints I had about that game. Fans of First-Person Shooters on the Switch should definitely give this game a look, even if they weren’t thrilled with Metro 2033. | |||
| Nintendo LABO Toy-Con 04: VR Kit | Accessory / Minigame Collection / On-Rails Shooter / Misc. | B+ | |
tl;drNintendo LABO Toy-Con 04: VR Kit is a really unique hybrid of a Minigame Collection, an On-Rails Shooter, a series of Accessories you create yourself using the included pieces of custom-made cardboard, and a misc. tool you can use to explore the features of the Nintendo Joy-Con controllers, and even a halfway decent beginners’ game design tool. While the Nintendo Switch clearly wasn’t designed with VR in mind, this kit makes it work, albeit in a highly limited fashion, and it’s comparatively cheap compared to more professional VR headsets. Overall, while it isn’t without some major flaws, this is my favorite Nintendo LABO kit, as the Blaster construction and minigame are both my absolute favorite, and this game goes much farther than the others in its game creation tools. If you only get one Nintendo LABO kit, get this one. | |||
| Overwatch 2 | First-Person Shooter | B+ | |
tl;drOverwatch 2 is an online-focused team-based First-Person Shooter that makes some small changes to the original game and brings it into the realm of free-to-play, but otherwise, this feels like a glorified update to the original game rather than a new game in its own right. And it’s hard to complain about that – Overwatch is great, and being free means that more players can play it now. However, it feels somewhat dishonest to label this as a sequel when in so many ways it feels like an update to the first game rather than something separate and new. | |||
| Quake II | First-Person Shooter | B+ | |
tl;drQuake II on the Nintendo Switch takes the classic First-Person Shooter and improves on it in countless ways, fills the game to the brim with content, and then offers it to players for a mere $10. The fast-paced and frenetic old-school style of First-Person Shooter may not appeal to everyone, but anyone who does enjoy that style of game should consider this to be an absolute must-buy. | |||
| Quake + Quake II Enhanced Bundle | Compilation / First-Person Shooter | B+ | |
tl;drQuake + Quake II Enhanced Bundle is a compilation of the two named games, both remastered ports of classic PC First-Person Shooters. The quality of these ports is among the best we’ve seen of any port to Nintendo Switch, though the games themselves are a bit dated in a way that may not appeal to all First-Person Shooter fans. Still, this bundle is a good value, especially when you consider just how much love and care was put into bringing these games to Nintendo Switch. If you enjoy old-school shooters, this package is a no-brainer. | |||
| Bioshock 2 Remastered | First-Person Shooter | B | |
tl;drBioshock 2 has aged somewhat since its original release in 2010, and it’s still fun to play, but as with this game’s original release, the return trip through Rapture isn’t quite as impressive as it was the first time around, and the story isn’t nearly as compelling. This is still a fun First-Person Shooter, but don’t expect anything quite as memorable as the original Bioshock. | |||
| Call of Juarez: Gunslinger | First-Person Shooter | B | |
tl;drCall of Juarez: Gunslinger is more or less a straight port of the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 wild West First-Person Shooter with added HD rumble and gyro aiming and nothing else changed or added. It’s a solid entry in the genre with a lot of personality, but it doesn’t do anything to push the genre forward in any way. | |||
| Crossbow: Bloodnight | First-Person Shooter | B | |
tl;drCrossbow: Bloodnight is a First-Person Shooter where players fend off hordes of monstrous enemies in a courtyard trying to survive as long as possible. While this game doesn’t provide a lot of variety, depth, or features, it looks fantastic, plays well, and its tiny $5 price tag more than makes up for what it’s lacking. This is not a game to get if you’re looking for something deep you’ll want to play for hours. But if you’d like to blast away enemies for a few minutes, this is an outstanding way to do so at a phenomenal price. | |||
| Crysis 2 Remastered | First-Person Shooter | B | |
tl;drCrysis 2 Remastered is an improved port of the solid First-Person Shooter with a performance that’s well beyond what we could have reasonably expected from Nintendo’s underpowered handheld. This port lacks the original game’s multiplayer, and it’s a port of a game that’s nowhere near as impressive or influential as the first game, but Crysis 2 is still a superb First-Person Shooter, and this is a fantastic way to play the game. | |||
| Doom (1993) | First-Person Shooter | B | |
tl;drDoom (1993) is the First-Person Shooter that more or less kick-started the genre in the first place, and after the game’s initial problems were patched out, the Switch version plays beautifully. That said, there are definitely elements of the game that have aged poorly, and the lack of online multiplayer in particular is disappointing. Still, this game is a legend, and this is a superb port, so fans of the genre have reason to celebrate. | |||
| Doom 3 | First-Person Shooter | B | |
tl;drDoom 3 is a First-Person Shooter that acts as a huge departure from the first two games, focusing more on story and atmosphere, with a slower pace and more methodical combat, for better or worse. Even a decade and a half later, the game is still fairly visually impressive, and the Switch version is a solid port. If you’re looking for a solid First-Person Shooter on the Switch, this is a good choice. | |||
| Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour | First-Person Shooter | B | |
tl;drDuke Nukem 3D is a classic First-Person Shooter that helped to define the genre over 20 years ago, and the Switch version includes a lot of extra bells and whistles over the original, with a lot of polish to help modernize the game somewhat. Granted, it’s still a relic of its time – even the improved presentation is archaic, the gameplay is extremely old-school, and the violent misogyny present here is shocking by today’s standards. But as long as you can be understanding about these anachronisms, you’ll find the gameplay here is still plenty of fun, even today. | |||
| Dusk | First-Person Shooter | B | |
tl;drDusk is a First-Person Shooter that channels the spirit of classic games in the genre, and does so largely successfully, pairing those classic games’ fast-paced focus on action with some small nods to more modern sensibilities. It’s still missing a few features, most notably a complete lack of multiplayer, but this is nevertheless a superb take on the genre’s golden age, and well worth playing for genre fans. | |||
| Immortal Redneck | First-Person Shooter / Roguelike | B | |
tl;drImmortal Redneck is an old-school FPS with Roguelike elements that add compelling depth to the otherwise simplistic gameplay. Fans of the FPS genre might find this a fun distraction. | |||
| Metro 2033 Redux | First-Person Shooter | B | |
tl;drMetro 2033 is a story-focused First-Person Shooter originally released in 2010, and this version of the game adds improved graphics over the original and extra options. The game’s story about post-apocalyptic humanity fighting off mutant creatures in underground tunnels is still engaging, but the game’s limited ammo and bullet sponge enemies are frustrating, and the improved graphics are too dark and come with frequent long loading screens. On the whole, this is still a solid addition to the genre on the Switch, but not without its drawbacks. | |||
| Neckbreak | First-Person Shooter | B | |
tl;drNeckbreak is a First-Person Shooter that copies much of the style and gameplay of the Hotline Miami franchise, bringing it to a first-person perspective in a dystopian cyberpunk world. While the presentation and core gameplay are excellent here, dumb AI and a few control issues keep this game from reaching the same heights as its inspiration. However, even with this being the case, it’s still well worth playing if you don’t mind the extreme violence and dark topic matter. | |||
| Penko Park | First-Person On-Rails Shooter / Misc. | B | |
tl;drPenko Park is an On-Rails First-Person Shooter with a wildlife photography theme much in the same way that Pokemon Snap is, and that is because this game is pretty much an off-brand Pokemon Snap. Despite how this game was clearly directly inspired by Nintendo’s series, this is a pretty good replica of the formula, albeit a low-budget one with really simple visuals, a soundtrack that’s virtually absent, and missing a few of the nuances of the Pokemon Snap games. However, as a small-scale filler between those titles, Penko Park is an excellent choice. | |||
| PowerWash Simulator | First-Person Shooter / Simulation | B | |
tl;drPowerWash Simulator is a game that mixes First-Person Shooter and Simulation elements where players use high-powered cleaning equipment to clean off various vehicles and environments. This game could benefit from more structured goals, the loading times are a bit much, and the menu interface is pretty terrible, but while this game definitely has room for improvement, it still makes for a surprisingly compelling, almost meditative experience. This game won’t be for everyone, but some players will find this to be surprisingly compelling. | |||
| Quake | First-Person Shooter | B | |
tl;drQuake’s release on the Nintendo Switch is a phenomenal port that takes the classic First-Person Shooter gives the visuals an improved framerate and resolution, includes a wealth of features, options, and content, and even some superb gyroscopic motion controls. This is still a port of a very old game, which shows both in its graphics and its gameplay, meaning this will absolutely not be a game for everyone. However, if you’re looking for classic, fast-paced old-school action, this is possibly the best port we could have possibly hoped for of this game. | |||
| Robobeat | First-Person Shooter / Roguelike / Music-Rhythm | B | |
tl;drRobobeat combines First-Person Shooter, Roguelike, and Music-Rhythm elements in gameplay that has to blasting away enemies in time with the beat. The gameplay can get a bit too hectic with a lot going on at once, and the Roguelike elements could stand to be more pronounced, but despite these issues the core gameplay remains enjoyable, and a nice change of pace for all of this game’s individual genres. | |||
| The Outer Worlds | Open-World Action-RPG / First-Person Shooter | B | |
tl;drThe Outer Worlds is an Open-World Action-RPG and First-Person Shooter that’s much in the same vein as the Fallout games, and it features some incredibly good writing and voice acting, as well as some comparable gameplay, albeit with a bit more focus on its First-Person Shooter elements. Having said that, the segmented map design the of the game’s world-hopping make the Open-World elements far less appealing, and the Nintendo Switch version is still graphically far inferior compared to other versions, even after the patch. It’s still perfectly playable and fans wanting a solid Open-World game on the go may want to look into it, but those who can get it on another platform are better off doing so. | |||
| Turbo Overkill | First-Person Shooter | B | |
tl;drTurbo Overkill is a retro-style First-Person Shooter set in a cyberpunk-style future where players violently tear through hordes of half-machine enemies with guns and more often with their chainsaw leg. Despite the game being overly-fast and not always doing a good job telling you where to go, this is wonderful over-the-top old-school action that’s perfect for players craving an intense old-school take on the genre. | |||
| Turok 2: Seeds of Evil | First-Person Shooter | B | |
tl;drTurok 2 is a port of the old-school N64 FPS that does a good job of cleaning up the game to be playable in the modern day. It still looks blocky and archaic, but the smooth framerates make this a great way to enjoy the fast-paced action, so long as you aren’t frustrated by the backtracking, the loss of split-screen multiplayer, and the abandoned online multiplayer. | |||
| Umurangi Generation | First-Person Shooter / Puzzle / Misc. | B | |
tl;drUmurangi Generation is a First-Person Shooter where what you’re shooting is photographs, trying to capture shots of specific “photo bounties” spread across the game’s levels. The gameplay is a great simulation of photography, and finding each photo subject makes for a fantastic puzzle, even if there are some issues here like a slow walking speed and underwhelming visuals. However, the real treat here is the atmospheric dark story players glean by observing the seemingly-relaxed environments. If you’re a fan of environmental storytelling, or a photography enthusiast, this game is for you. | |||
| Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus | First-Person Shooter | B | |
tl;drWolfenstein II is a First-Person Shooter that had to undergo a significant number of cuts to make it onto the Switch, but the result is still a solid game with good action and an entertaining, bonkers story. Just be sure you have a lot of space on your memory card if you plan to get this one. | |||
| Borderlands 3 Ultimate Edition | First-Person Shooter | B- | |
tl;drBorderlands 3 on Nintendo Switch finally sees the fourth (yes, fourth) mainline entry in the “looter shooter” First-Person Shooter franchise make it to Nintendo’s handheld, but the game itself is something of a disappointment, and the Nintendo Switch version is heavily compromised, with the multiplayer drastically cut back, the visuals having numerous issues including some nasty framerate drops, and even occasional game crashes. This is still at its core an enjoyable game, but nowhere near as good as the Borderlands Legendary Collection. | |||
| Chernobylite | First-Person Shooter | B- | |
tl;drChernobylite is a First-Person Shooter with Stealth, Horror, and Survival Adventure elements, where players scavenge for supplies, build up a small band of mercenaries, and take on soldiers and monsters in a sci-fi take on modern-day Chernobyl. Each of the individual elements of this game is weak or in some way lacking, but these elements come together to create an overall fun experience that’s not quite like anything else out there. If you can, play this on another platform, because the Nintendo Switch version definitely has drawbacks, but if you primarily play on Nintendo Switch I still think you’ll find a lot to like here. | |||
| Doom II (Classic) | First-Person Shooter | B- | |
tl;drDoom II is a First-Person Shooter that follows directly in the footsteps of the first Doom, and after the game’s initial problems were patched out, the Switch version plays beautifully. That said, there are definitely elements of the game that have aged poorly, and the lack of online multiplayer in particular is disappointing. Plus, it’s hard to ignore the fact that this game is largely a retread of ground broken in the original Doom. Still, this is nevertheless a solid port of a classic well worth playing. | |||
| Doom + Doom II | Compilation / First-Person Shooter | B- | |
tl;drDoom + Doom II is a Compilation containing the two named games, both First-Person Shooters from the 1990s, with the first being arguably the most influential First-Person Shooter of all time. The two games are still enjoyable today, but this bundle won’t save you a single penny off the separate prices of these games – in fact, it will cost you an extra penny. There are other Doom bundles that can provide more of a savings than this, but I suppose if you want the first two Doom games, and only those two games, this bundle is a sufficient way to get them. | |||
| Doom 64 | First-Person Shooter | B- | |
tl;drDoom 64 is a First-Person Shooter that follows directly in the footsteps of the first Doom and Doom II, and features some minor improvements and tonal differences over those games that sets it apart. It’s still a 23 year-old game and very much looks it despite the improvements to framerate and resolution, and the lack of multiplayer is disappointing, but for $5 it’s still a good deal on a classic entry in the genre. | |||
| Heretic + Hexen | Compilation / First-Person Shooter | B- | |
tl;drHeretic + Hexen is a Compilation of remasters of the two named games, both retro-style “Boomer Shooter” First-Person Shooters, plus a wealth of additional expansion content. I think the games themselves have some frustrating issues, but this collection overshadows that somewhat with the sheer amount of love and care that has gone into presenting them in the best possible light, with tons of options, features, and bonus content. I think the main audience for these games are fans of this particular niche of the genre and those with a fondness for retro games. Everyone else? You have better options. | |||
| Island Saver | First-Person Shooter / Educational | B- | |
tl;drIsland Saver is a Family-Friendly Free-to-Play First-Person Shooter that has you using a vacuum gun to suck up litter and spray water to clean up pollution. It has a surprisingly polished presentation, especially given that the game seems nearly free from monetization, and the game’s Educational elements act as a nice (albeit abstract) kid-friendly introduction to environmentalism as well as finance and the economy. Older players may find that the game lacks challenge and is filled with repetitive busywork, but for younger players, this is well worth getting. | |||
| Serious Sam Collection | Compilation / First-Person Shooter | B- | |
tl;drSerious Sam Collection is a Compilation of the alien-blasting First-Person Shooters Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter, Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter, and Serious Sam 3 BFE, along with DLC for the latter two games. This isn’t a comprehensive collection, the first two games run well but show their age in multiple ways, and the third game has some severe performance issues due to a shoddy port job. There’s still a lot of old-school fun to be had, and the multiplayer options here are impressive (unless you want to play online or play Serious Sam 3 in Split-Screen multiplayer), but know that the Nintendo Switch version of this collection comes with some severe compromises. | |||
| Turok | First-Person Shooter | B- | |
tl;drTurok is a port of the old-school N64 FPS that does a good job of cleaning up the game to be playable in the modern day. It still looks blocky and archaic, but the smooth framerates make this a great way to enjoy the fast-paced action, so long as you aren’t frustrated by the still-terrible platforming. | |||
| Amedama | Action | C+ | |
tl;drAmedama is an Action game where players take the role of a samurai’s body-snatching spirit trying to save his abducted sister. The presentation in this game is absolutely gorgeous, but the gameplay is clunky, tedious, and has absurdly poor pacing. This results in a game that is far more interesting to look at than to play. | |||
| Apex Legends | First-Person Shooter | C+ | |
tl;drApex Legends is an online-focused free-to-play battle royale-style First Person Shooter where there’s an emphasis on coordinating with your 2- or 3-person team to survive. Unfortunately, while the core gameplay here definitely has a lot to offer, the game took a serious graphical hit to get to the Nintendo Switch, a platform that’s not ideal to play an online shooter with such a high emphasis on communication. Also, this is a game with a steep learning curve, so if you haven’t already played the game elsewhere, you’re likely to get killed extremely quickly. In short, if you want to play this game, you are highly recommended to do so on another platform. | |||
| Battlezone Gold Edition | Action / First-Person Shooter / Roguelike | C+ | |
tl;drBattlezone is a reboot of the arcade classic that has you driving a tank and blasting away enemies in a digital landscape. The Action elements here combine well with some Roguelike elements, and while the gameplay here has some small frustrations, this is overall a satisfying Action title. | |||
| Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath HD | First-Person Shooter / 3D Action-Platformer | C+ | |
tl;drOddworld: Stranger’s Wrath is a port of a 2005 Xbox First-Person Shooter with 3D Action-Platformer elements. While there are some creative ideas at work here, at every turn this game is marred by poor design choices that make the game needlessly tedious, and missing options that really feel like they were needed. The result is a game that still has some fun to offer, but you have to put up with a lot of frustration to actually enjoy it. | |||
| Post Void | First-Person Shooter / Roguelike | C+ | |
tl;drPost Void is a First-Person Shooter with Roguelike elements that takes the simple gameplay of classic retro First-Person Shooters, pushes players to blast through it at high speed with death always just seconds away, and gives it a surreal and garishly colorful presentation. The result is a game that will absolutely not appeal to everyone, but those who do enjoy it will find it unlike anything else out there. | |||
| S.N.I.P.E.R. Hunter Scope | Arcade / On-Rails First-Person Shooter / Third-Person Shooter | C+ | |
tl;drS.N.I.P.E.R. Hunter Scope is a game that looks to bring back the glory days of arcade light gun games like Silent Scope and Time Crisis, and while it does about as good a job at this as one could expect, suffice it to say that the Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Cons aren’t ideal for this sort of motion control, and no matter which of the game’s control options you choose, they all seem to have problems. If you don’t mind wrestling with the controls, you may still find some arcadey enjoyment to be had here, but most will likely find this too frustrating to bother with. | |||
| ScreenCheat: Unplugged | First-Person Shooter / Party Game | C+ | |
tl;drScreenCheat is a FPS where players cannot see enemies and must “cheat” by looking at other players’ screens on the splitscreen to figure out their position. It’s a clever concept that’s executed well enough, but it gets old pretty quickly. An interesting distraction, but not much more than that. | |||
| Star Wars: Republic Commando | First-Person Shooter | C+ | |
tl;drStar Wars: Republic Commando is still a decent First-Person Shooter even 15 years after its original release, but not an especially noteworthy one. While the game has aged reasonably well, it doesn’t do anything all that noteworthy for the genre. It’s still a decent entry in the genre, but without its license there wouldn’t be much here to recommend it over other more modern First-Person Shooters. | |||
| Vampire Slayer: The Resurrection | First-Person Shooter | C+ | |
tl;drVampire Slayer: The Resurrection is an asymmetrical multiplayer-focused team-based First-Person Shooter that pits a team of vampires up against a team of hunters, with each team armed with their own unique abilities. The game is lacking in options and game modes, and the graphics are archaic, but for only $3 this is still a fun take on the genre. | |||
| Void Bastards | First-Person Shooter / Roguelike | C+ | |
tl;drVoid Bastards is a First-Person Shooter and Roguelike where players board derelict spacecraft to acquire supplies while fighting off the residents of those spacecraft. This game’s tough difficulty, oppressive environments and limited supplies will mean this won’t be a game for everyone. However, if that sort of challenge appeals to you, you may want to check this out. | |||
| Wolfenstein: Youngblood | First-Person Shooter | C+ | |
tl;drWolfenstein: Youngblood is the third First-Person Shooter in the reebooted Wolfenstein series, having you play as the two daughters of B.J. Blazkowicz as they try to rescue their dad in Nazi-occupied Paris. It’s a decent port to Switch, but the game itself has some serious flaws – the gameplay mechanics are busted, the game structure is flawed, and the two protagonists are two of the most unlikable game characters I’ve ever been made to play as. The result is a game with a lot of good ideas dragged down to just being “okay” | |||
| Best Sniper Legacy: Dino Hunt & Shooter 3D | Arcade / First-Person Shooter | C | |
tl;drBest Sniper Legacy is an Arcade-style First-person Shooter where players use a sniper rifle to take down dinosaurs. This game’s graphics are surprisingly good, and the premise holds a lot of promise, but the gameplay suffers from too many limitations due to this game’s mobile origins. It’s not terrible, but there are better options on the Nintendo Switch. | |||
| Demon Pit | First-Person Shooter | C | |
tl;drDemon Pit is a First-Person Shooter that has players blasting away hordes of demons in hell. This game is fast-paced and fun, but also shallow and repetitive. Good for a few minutes at a time of mindless shooting, but not much more than that. | |||
| Doom | First-Person Shooter | C | |
tl;drDoom (2016/2017) is a First-Person Shooter with fast-paced frenetic action and an inventive approach to the genre. Unfortunately, this version of the game pairs terrible framerates with atrocious textures, and the result is something that at times feels unplayable. If at all possible, get this game on another platform. | |||
| Frag Pro Shooter | First-Person Shooter / Third-Person Shooter | C | |
tl;drFrag Pro Shooter is an arena-based, multiplayer-focused First-Person Shooter and Third-Person Shooter (you can do both) where players select a team of heroes with unique abilities and can freely swap between them. While the game does have some decent gameplay and a nice concept, it’s heavily undermined by pretty much every gross monetization practice there is, a lack of options in maps and character abilities, and online play so deserted you’ll just end up getting in matches with bots. As a result, it’s hard to recommend this over other similar games like Overwatch. | |||
| Hypercharge Unboxed | First-Person Shooter / Tower Defense | C | |
tl;drHypercharge Unboxed is a First-Person Shooter with Tower Defense elements that has you as a toy defending various toy-appropriate locales from an invading army of other toys. The idea here is fantastic, but it’s brought down by sub-par First-Person Shooter gameplay and sub-par Tower Defense elements, making for a game that isn’t very fun to play. | |||
| Rule No. 1 | First-Person Shooter | C | |
tl;drRule No.1 is a simple First-Person Shooter where players take the role of a nameless gun-toting girl fending off waves of enemies in a rectangular arena. There are some fun presentation elements here, but there are also some lacking ones, and the gameplay itself features some questionable design choices. As an inexpensive First-Person Shooter, it’s a decent time-waster, but there are much better ones to be had, even at this game’s $6 discount price. | |||
| Flames of Damnation | First-Person Shooter | C- | |
tl;drFlames of Damnation is a First-Person Shooter that has players blasting away demonic-looking enemies in a hellish landscape. This game is clearly aiming to imitate the classic First-Person Shooters of the genre, and while it succeeds in some ways, it falls flat in others, like clunky slow movement and brain-dead enemy AI. You have far too many better options on Nintendo Switch to waste money on this game. | |||
| Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast | First-Person Shooter | C- | |
tl;drJedi Outcast is a First-Person Shooter originally released in 2002, now cleaned up and ported to the Switch. The characters and story are as classic as ever, but the gameplay has aged very poorly, with terrible level design, bullet sponge enemies, a stingy autosave, and a slew of other problems. It’s still a game that’s full of charm, but by today’s standards it’s hard to enjoy this game. | |||
| Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy | First-Person Shooter | C- | |
tl;drJedi Academy is a First-Person Shooter with some Third-Person Action originally released in 2003, now cleaned up and ported to the Switch. The gameplay here is improved in some areas over the previous game, but worse in others. Terrible level design, bullet sponge enemies, unreliable lightsaber controls, a lacking story, and a shallow and not especially fun online multiplayer mode are some of its major flaws. Overall, this is a game that only the most diehard fans will enjoy. | |||
| Vektor Wars | First-Person Shooter | C- | |
tl;drVektor Wars is a FPS with a nice Tron-like aesthetic and not much else going for it. Simple, repetitive gameplay makes this little more than a brief distraction. | |||
| Warface | First-Person Shooter | C- | |
tl;drWarface is an Online-Only, Free-to-Play First-Person Shooter very much in the style of games like Call of Duty. However, it’s not nearly as good as those games, and frustrates players with microtransactions and maddeningly buggy menus. If you absolutely need a semi-realistic shooter on the Switch, this will suffice, but it’s hardly a substitute for a real Call of Duty game. | |||
| Pandemic Shooter | First-Person Shooter | D+ | |
tl;drPandemic Shooter is a First-Person Shooter where players fend off an alien lizard-controlled flat-Earther zombie plague (don’t ask), and while the game has some interesting elements, it’s ruined by its poor level design, its absurd difficulty spikes, and its bizarre and unchangeable button layout. At this point, you have plenty of other good First-Person Shooters to play on Nintendo Switch, don’t inflict this one on yourself. | |||
| QUByte Classics: Zero Tolerance Collection by PIKO | Compilation / First-Person Shooter | D+ | |
tl;drQUByte Classics: Zero Tolerance Collection by PIKO is a Compilation containing a classic First-Person Shooter from the Sega Genesis, Zero Tolerance, as well as two previously-unreleased “sequels” (sort of). For fans of the original game, this is a great package, but be aware that this game has aged horribly in numerous ways, with everything from the framerates and controls to the view distance and level design being absolutely terrible by today’s standards. Unless you’re a fan of the original release, skip this Compilation. | |||
| Star Wars Jedi Knight Collection | Compilation / First-Person Shooter | D+ | |
tl;drStar Wars: Jedi Knight Collection is a Compilation of visually-improved ports of two First-Person Shooters, Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, and Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy. Both games have aged very poorly, with terrible controls, confusing level design, and bullet sponge enemies. However, this Compilation makes things even worse by charging $10 more than the cost of buying these games separately. Unless you are a die-hard fan of the original games wanting to get a physical copy of them on Nintendo Switch, do not buy Star Wars: Jedi Knight Collection | |||
| BrainZ | First-Person Shooter | D | |
tl;drBrainZ is a First-Person Shooter that has players taking on waves of zombies, but it struggles with simple gameplay, control issues, a mismatched presentation, incomplete sound design, and an overall experience you’ll want to abandon within minutes of playing. Skip this one. | |||
| Krispain Hero:Roguelite Dungeon Shooter Fire Simulator Counter FPS World | First-Person Shooter | D | |
tl;drKrispain Hero is a First-Person Shooter with a ridiculous extended title, but all it boils down to is a game that’s tedious, repetitive, unimpressive, unoriginal, and boring. In short, there are likely more words in this game’s title than minutes you will enjoy playing this game. | |||
| Revenge of Banana | First-Person Shooter | D | |
tl;drRevenge of Banana is a First-Person Shooter where players use fruits and vegetables as weapons to fight enemies that are also fruits and vegetables. As amusing as this silly premise is, the gameplay is so tedious and poorly-constructed that you’ll bore of it very quickly. Skip it. | |||
| Chex Quest HD | First-Person Shooter | D- | |
tl;drChex Quest HD is a First-Person Shooter that remakes the cult classic cereal pack-in promotional game, and it is every bit as bizarre and surreal now as it was when it first released. Unfortunately, the performance is terrible and the gameplay is absolutely atrocious, and the $5 price tag is insulting for an advertisement poorly disguised as a game that has been free in every other release. If you want to check this out, download the free PC version on Steam. In any case, stay far away from this version of the game. | |||
| Mech Wars | First-Person Shooter / Third-Person Shooter | D- | |
tl;drMech Wars is a First-Person Shooter and Third-Person Shooter that has you piloting a mech against various enemies, and it is an absolute disaster. Painful slide show framerates, sluggish controls, simple gameplay, and constant annoying beeping sounds. Don’t subject yourself to this awful, awful game. | |||
| Team Troopers | First-Person Shooter | D- | |
tl;drTeam Troopers is a Call-of-Duty-style multiplayer-focused First-Person Shooter that’s extremely unambitious in what it’s trying to do and yet still fails even that much. Bad controls, bad graphics, zero originality, and one of the worst menu systems I’ve ever seen in a game. Even on Nintendo Switch, you have plenty of better options than this. | |||
| Toilet Hero | First-Person Shooter | D- | |
tl;drToilet Hero is a First-Person Shooter where you fight enemies that are heads popping out of toilets. That’s it, that’s all this game has to offer. The gameplay is terrible, the sound is a confused mess, the graphics would have looked dated two decades ago… unless you can’t stop laughing at the image of a head popping out of a toilet, you should absolutely not buy this game. | |||
| Ultrashot: Kill Protocol | First-Person Shooter | F | |
tl;drUltrashot is a First-Person Shooter set in what appears to be a zombie apocalypse, but everything about this game is terrible, from the ugly visuals to the monotonous gameplay to the outright broken controls. Do not waste money on this. | |||
| Zomb | First-Person Shooter | F | |
tl;drZomb is a FPS with a voxel art style that looks ugly and plays terribly, with horrible controls and repetitive combat. Don’t. | |||
.
Third-Person Shooter
| Game | Genre | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga | Open-World 3D Action-Platformer / Third-Person Shooter | A |
tl;drLEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is yet another game in Traveller’s Tales’ family-friendly franchise of LEGO Open-World 3D Action-Platformers, with this game revisiting all nine numbered Star Wars films with entirely new gameplay. This is the LEGO game that gets everything right – the new Third-Person Shooter gameplay helps to bring players closer to the action, the comedy is as great as it’s ever been, the presentation is gorgeous, and the world provides lots of interesting places to explore. This is not just a great LEGO game, it’s a great Star Wars game, and just a great game overall. If you only ever play one Traveller’s Tales LEGO game, this is the one to play. | ||
| Splatoon 2 | Third-Person Shooter | A |
tl;drSplatoon 2 is a Third-Person Shooter that takes a refreshing approach to the genre, where splatting the area with your color of ink is just as important as taking out enemies. While the game isn’t without its annoying problems, it looks great, plays great, has plenty of variety of weapons and game modes, and will suck you in for hours at a time. | ||
| Splatoon 3 | Third-Person Shooter | A |
tl;drSplatoon 3 is a multiplayer-focused team-based Third-Person Shooter that adds a bunch of new content, new features, and new improvements on top of what we saw in Splatoon 1 and 2, yet it still feels like much the same sort of experience. To be clear, that experience is an outstanding Third-Person Shooter that looks great, plays great, and is truly unique within the genre… except, well, that’s just it, it’s not completely unique – Splatoon 2 is right there, on the same platform. Still, even if it feels in many ways like “more of the same”, it’s more of the same of something great, and the improvements mean that this is the best Splatoon game yet. Just know that if you didn’t care for earlier games in the series, Splatoon 3 isn’t going to change your mind. | ||
| Fortnite | Compilation / Open-World Third-Person Shooter | A- |
tl;drFortnite’s early days may have been as a Free-to-Play online multiplayer-focused “battle royale”-style Third-Person Shooter, but it has since blossomed into a massive game platform with a wide variety of different game types to enjoy, and just about all of them are fantastic. It’s intimidating, poorly-organized, confusing, and not very user-friendly to newer players, and the Nintendo Switch version has some ugly performance issues that make it one of the worst ways to play the game, but none of that changes that this is still a truly must-play game. | ||
| Red Faction: Guerilla Re-Mars-tered Edition | Open-World Third-Person Shooter | A- |
tl;drRed Faction: Guerilla Re-Marstered Edition is the HD re-release of the decade-old Open-World Third-Person Shooter that has aged remarkably well and is still unparalleled in its fun and impressive-looking destruction. While not quite as good-looking as other versions of the game, it still looks and plays great, and while the game isn’t without its flaws, the basic gameplay is so compelling that it’s still a joy to play after all these years. | ||
| Plants Vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville Complete Edition | Third-Person Shooter | B+ |
tl;drPlants Vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville is a surprisingly good port of the online-focused team-based Third-Person Shooter. The graphics are scaled down from other versions of the game, but this game still looks outstanding, the online play is excellent, and there’s even a solid single-player campaign to enjoy as well. Fans of games like Overwatch and Paladins should definitely consider giving this game a try. | ||
| Resident Evil 5 | Third-Person Shooter / Horror | B+ |
tl;drResident Evil 5 abandons much of the series’ Graphic Adventure and Horror-fueled roots in favor of something that’s much more Action-heavy, and while series purists may find this disappointing, the result is a pretty fun Third-Person Shooter with some great online multiplayer co-op and competitive gameplay. | ||
| Resident Evil 6 | Third-Person Shooter / Horror | B+ |
tl;drResident Evil 6, even more than the series’ fifth game, is an over-the-top action-packed Third-Person Shooter that is as far from “Survival Horror” as the series has ever gotten. However, for those who don’t mind the departure from the series’ roots and who are looking for an Action game with some great online co-op, this is a game well worth playing, although be warned that the Nintendo Switch version suffers from poor framerates and underpopulated online lobbies. | ||
| Risk of Rain 2 + Risk of Rain 1 | Compilation / Roguelike / Third-Person Shooter / Action-Platformer | B+ |
tl;drRisk of Rain 2 + Risk of Rain 1 is a Compilation available only in physical form containing the two named games, both included on the cartridge. The first game is an Action-Platformer with Roguelike elements, while the second game brings the formula of the first game into 3D as a Third-Person Shooter. These games aren’t without their issues (particularly bullet sponge enemies), but they’re solid action games, and this Compilation is such a good bargain that I would argue that unless you insist on getting your games in digital form, you should absolutely get this package instead of buying either game separately. | ||
| Resident Evil 4 | Graphic Adventure / Horror / Third-Person Shooter | B |
tl;drResident Evil 4 is an HD remaster of the GameCube Horror game that does a good job bringing the classic to the Nintendo Switch, albeit without the Wii version’s motion controls. And as it happens, the controls are the worst thing about this otherwise solid game. If you’re looking for one of the highlights of the Resident Evil series, you should definitely give this game a look, but be aware that the controls will make this a love it or hate it experience. | ||
| Resident Evil Triple Pack | Compilation / Third-Person Shooter / Horror | B |
tl;drResident Evil Triple Pack contains Resident Evil 4, 5, 6, and all of their expansion content, although only Resident Evil 4 is on the cartridge, with 5 and 6 requiring a massive 37GB download to play. While these games represent the series’ controversial turn to more action-focused gameplay, that gameplay has aged better than the earlier games in the series, although the Nintendo Switch releases are a mix of good (added gyroscopic controls in 5 and 6, great online co-op in 5 and 6) and bad (no motion controls in 4, terrible framerates in 5 and 6). On the whole, this is still a solid trio of Third-Person Shooters, though it’s debatable whether this Compilation is a better bet than just buying the games individually on the eShop. | ||
| Risk of Rain 2 | Third-Person Shooter / Roguelike | B |
tl;drRisk of Rain 2 is a Third-Person Shooter with Roguelike elements that’s faithful to the first game while bringing its formula into the world of 3D. Overall I’d say this game is a marked improvement over the first game, with some really good action, although again I’m frustrated by the bullet sponge enemies. | ||
| Star Wars: Hunters | Third-Person Shooter | B |
tl;drStar Wars: Hunters is an online-only multiplayer-focused team-based Third-Person Shooter similar to other “Hero Shooters” like Overwatch. The presentation here is good, and the gameplay is great, but it’s marred by nasty monetization that locks away most of the game unless you grind for countless hours or fork over massive amounts of cash. It’s a shame that an otherwise great game had to be tarnished in this way. | ||
| Warframe | Third-Person Action | B |
tl;drWarframe is a Free-To-Play Third-Person Action game that actually does the “Free-To-Play” part right, and provides a good multiplayer online experience for up to four players, albeit one that’s disorienting for newcomers. However, the Switch is not the most ideal place to play this game, and if you can play it on another platform, you’re better off playing it there. | ||
| Control Ultimate Edition – Cloud Version | Third-Person Shooter | B- |
tl;drControl on the Nintendo Switch is a fascinating experiment with streaming that largely succeeds at what it attempts to do, though your mileage may vary depending on your internet connection and your feelings about game streaming. As for the game itself, this is solid Third-Person Shooter with a lot of strange reality-warping elements that seem intended to distract from some of the game’s frustrations. If you can play this game on another platform, that may be preferable, but if the Nintendo Switch is your primary gaming platform you may find this to be an enjoyable action game. | ||
| Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered | Third-Person Shooter | B- |
tl;drGhostbusters: The Videogame Remastered is a Third-Person Shooter that’s a good but not great game, but with an overwhelming amount of fan service for anyone who loved the original Ghostbuster films. The presentation here is so good (outdated visuals aside), that fans of the films can overlook the frustrating combat mechanics and linear level design. But those who never got sucked into this franchise may not see what’s so special about this game. | ||
| Resident Evil Revelations | Horror / Third-Person Shooter | B- |
tl;drResident Evil Revelations takes the 3DS entry in the series and brings it to the Nintendo Switch with upscaled visuals, resulting in a Horror game with some decent action that plays well and still manages a creepy atmosphere, although the game’s handheld origins are definitely apparent in its smaller scope and lacking visuals. Despite this, it’s a decent game and fans of the series should find it well worth playing. | ||
| Rogue Company | Third-Person Shooter | B- |
tl;drRogue Company is a Free-to-Play online-focused team-based Third-Person Shooter that pulls elements from a lot of other team-based online games like Counter-Strike, Fortnite, and Overwatch. However, it integrates these elements well and the core gameplay here is excellent. What it currently lacks is content. Thankfully, there’s a pretty good likelihood it’ll be getting that content eventually, but for now, this is a game that’s a bit limited. | ||
| Spellbreak | Third-Person Shooter | B- |
tl;drSpellbreak is a Battle Royale-style Third-Person Shooter where players use different elemental magic abilities that combine in interesting ways. The core gameplay here is strong, with enough elements to set it apart, but there are a number of technical and balance issues that keep this game from being on quite the same level as the likes of Fortnite. | ||
| CRSED: F.O.A.D. | Third-Person Shooter | C+ |
tl;drCRSED is a free-to-play online-focused Third-Person Shooter with a Battle Royale style of gameplay that’s very reminiscent of Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds. It’s actually a pretty good entry in the genre too, with excellent mechanics and a good amount of variety. However, this game is absolutely crippled by its terrible, terrible graphics on Nintendo Switch, which make the game painful to look at, and actually hurts the gameplay by making it far more difficult to discern where enemies are in the environment. If you can play this game on any other platform, it may be worth a try, and there’s still fun to be had with it on Nintendo Switch, but only if you don’t mind your eyes hurting after playing it. | ||
| Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2 | Third-Person Shooter | C+ |
tl;drEarth Defense Force: World Brothers 2 once again takes the Third-Person Shooter series’ “looter shooter” gameplay loop, adds a boxy “voxel” art style, and a new mechanic centered on rescuing allies and building up a team. Unfortunately, this ally mechanic is poorly-executed, not only actively discouraging you from fully using it, but wrecking the “looter shooter” parts of the franchise in the process. The Nintendo Switch version of the game thankfully has much-improved performance over the prior game, but that doesn’t fix all the other issues present here. | ||
| Realm Royale | Third-Person Shooter | C+ |
tl;drRealm Royale is a free-to-play Third-Person Shooter set in the same world as Paladins, but with battle royale gameplay like Fortnite. This game offers a few clever departures from Fortnite in its gameplay that have a lot of potential, but that potential is all but demolished by the game’s horrendously long and frequent load times, which you will likely see more of than actual gameplay. | ||
| S.N.I.P.E.R. Hunter Scope | Arcade / On-Rails First-Person Shooter / Third-Person Shooter | C+ |
tl;drS.N.I.P.E.R. | ||
| Anime Girls: Sun of a Beach | Third-Person Shooter | C |
tl;drAnime Girls: Sun of a Beach is a Third-Person Shooter where players control a beautiful girl fighting off hordes of sea monsters on a beach. The gameplay here works but it’s simple, tedious, and repetitive. And if your main interest is the hot girls, you’re sure to find something more satisfying to look at with a quick internet search. I suggest you do that instead. | ||
| Crossout Legends | Third-Person Shooter | C |
tl;drCrossout Legends is an online-only team-based 6v6 Third-Person Shooter where players create and customize their own combat vehicles. The core gameplay is fun, and the premise has a world of potential, but that potential is ruined by nasty pay-to-win monetization, poor menu design, and a lack of actual players. This game is still somewhat enjoyable, but it feels like a pale shadow of what it could have been. | ||
| Frag Pro Shooter | First-Person Shooter / Third-Person Shooter | C |
tl;drFrag Pro Shooter is an arena-based, multiplayer-focused First-Person Shooter and Third-Person Shooter (you can do both) where players select a team of heroes with unique abilities and can freely swap between them. | ||
| Guns at Dawn Arena | Third-Person Shooter | C |
tl;drGuns at Dawn Arena is a Wild West-themed 1v1 Third-Person Shooter. The presentation here is quite good, and the core gameplay is fun, but all of that is ruined by the game’s absurdly ugly monetization and pay-to-win elements. As a result, what could have been a really fun game just turns into something despicable. | ||
| Titan Glory | Third-Person Shooter | C |
tl;drTitan Glory is a mech combat game where up to twelve players fight in large outdoor arenas in a standard array of typical online shooter game variants… or at least that would be the case if the online servers weren’t deserted. As a result, this becomes a decent but somewhat uninteresting Third-Person Shooter, without any of the customization or building destruction mech games are usually known for. Not bad, but there’s not much here of interest either. | ||
| Vigor | Third-Person Shooter | C |
tl;drVigor is a free-to-play Third-Person Shooter that has players scavenging in a large area in post-apocalyptic Norway while trying to avoid getting killed by each other and an incoming radioactive fog. This is a great concept done poorly, with some good ideas and mechanics ultimately undone by bad core gameplay and distracting, ugly graphics. It may be worth a look if you find the concept interesting, but otherwise you’re better off with one of the Nintendo Switch’s numerous other shooters. | ||
| Earth Defense Force: World Brothers | Third-Person Shooter | C- |
tl;drEarth Defense Force: World Brothers takes the Third-Person Shooter series’ “looter shooter” gameplay loop, adds a boxy “voxel” art style, and a new mechanic centered on rescuing allies and building up a team. Unfortunately, this ally mechanic is poorly-executed, not only actively discouraging you from fully using it, but wrecking the “looter shooter” parts of the franchise in the process. This game still has some fun ideas, but ultimately I have to recommend that players skip it. | ||
| Star Wars: Bounty Hunter | Third-Person Shooter | C- |
tl;drStar Wars: Bounty Hunter is a Third-Person Shooter set between the events of Star Wars Episode I and Episode II, starring the bounty hunter Jango Fett. It was a serviceable but sub-par entry in the franchise back when it was first released nearly 25 years ago, and this remaster doesn’t change that. As Star Wars games go, you could do worse, but you could also do much, much better. | ||
| Venatrix | Third-Person Shooter / Stealth / Horror | C- |
tl;drVenatrix is a Horror game with Third-Person Shooter and Stealth elements, with Lovecraftian themes and two protagonists, with only one of those worth playing. Unfortunately, even beyond this, Venatrix has some serious gameplay issues, audio issues, and performance issues, and these really drag down the experience. Major Lovecraftian nerds may find this worth a look, but everyone else is better off searching elsewhere. | ||
| Anime Girls: Highschool of Dead | Third-Person Shooter | D+ |
tl;drAnime Girls: Highschool of Dead is a Third-Person Shooter where players control a beautiful girl fighting off hordes of zombies in a high school. The gameplay here suffers from poor controls and bullet sponge enemies who keep getting caught on scenery, and if your main interest is the hot girls, you’re sure to find something more satisfying to look at with a quick internet search. I suggest you do that instead. | ||
| ExZeus: The Complete Collection | Compilation / On-Rails Shooter | D+ |
tl;drExZeus: The Complete Collection is a Compilation of two On-Rails Shooters, ExZeus and ExZeus 2, that have you piloting a mech fighter against an extraterrestrial threat. There’s some old-school charm here, but overall these game have horrible controls and a dated presentation. I recommend you skip this one. | ||
| Virtual Battle | Third-Person Shooter | D |
tl;drVirtual Battle is a Third-Person Shooter that is completely devoid of any sort of personality or anything unique or interesting to set it apart. Don’t bother. | ||
| Mech Wars | First-Person Shooter / Third-Person Shooter | D- |
tl;drMech Wars is a First-Person Shooter and Third-Person Shooter that has you piloting a mech against various enemies, and it is an absolute disaster. Painful slide show framerates, sluggish controls, simple gameplay, and constant annoying beeping sounds. Don’t subject yourself to this awful, awful game. | ||
| Max Reloaded II | Third-Person Shooter | F |
tl;drMax Reloaded II is a Third-Person Shooter that is a version of the famous asset flip Hammer 2. I can’t tell you if the other versions of this game are worthwhile at all, but I can tell you with conviction that Max Reloaded II is complete garbage. It is an incomplete, shoddy mess of a game that runs poorly, controls poorly, and is flooded with bugs and odd design choices that scream that the people who released this game in this state have no idea what they’re doing. Do not pay money for this. | ||

Flight Sim/Space Combat Sim
| Game | Genre | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| Aaero: Complete Edition | Music-Rhythm / On-Rails Shooter | A- |
tl;drAaero is a Music-Rhythm game with On-Rails Shooter elements that plays like a more musical version of Rez, with elements of other music-rhythm games added in, ultimately making this game stand alone as a fairly unique entry in the genre. It could do with a bit more content and a few other minor adjustments, but overall this is a fantastic Music-Rhythm game that genre fans should not miss out on. | ||
| Rebel Galaxy Outlaw | Space Combat Game / Simulation | B+ |
tl;drRebel Galaxy Outlaw is a Space Combat Game with strong Simulation elements that has players fighting enemies and taking on oddjobs in a space Western-themed galaxy. There’s a good variety of things to do here leading to a good feeling of player freedom, and though this game has numerous rough edges such as large and early difficulty spikes and a reduced resolution on Nintendo Switch, this is still overall a great game for anyone looking to fly around in a rough frontier in space. | ||
| Starlink: Battle for Atlas | Space Combat Game / Open World | B+ |
tl;drStarlink is an Open-World game masquerading as a Space Combat game, and while it can get a bit repetitive, it’s still enjoyable and well-crafted. The exclusive Star Fox content here makes the Switch version of the game the one to get. As for whether to get the physical or digital version, don’t expect the cool toys to do much to improve the gameplay, but they’re nice enough that you might want to get the physical version just to have them as, you know, cool toys. | ||
| Bow to Blood: Last Captain Standing | Combat Flight Simulator | B |
tl;drBow to Blood is a Combat Flight Sim where players pilot hulking sci-fi airships in a competition that has elements of the game show Survivor. It’s an odd mix of elements, with gameplay that won’t appeal to everyone, and even then it has its share of flaws. But for only $1, it’s easy to forgive a lot of that when the core gameplay is still enjoyable and has a lot of creative elements to it. I recommend giving it a try – even if this isn’t for you, you’ll only be out a buck if you end up disliking it. | ||
| Everspace – Stellar Edition | Space Combat Game / Roguelike | B |
tl;drEverspace is a Space Combat Roguelike game, where you’re flying a spaceship, fighting off enemies, dying, and then making another attempt at it with some of what you acquired on the previous run. The game’s core gameplay is good, and the Roguelike elements work well with it, but the game is repetitive and in great need of a better variety of environments and stuff to do. | ||
| GRIDD: Retroenhanced | On-Rails Shooter | B |
tl;drGRIDD is an On-Rails Shooter set in an abstract world where you are flying a ship that represents a hacker’s attempts to break into a computer system. The game looks and sounds fantastic, and even though the gameplay is simple, it’s still really fun thanks to a fast pace and some good variety of challenges to tackle. The only problem here is the camera, but even despite this problem this is still an excellent entry in the genre that’s well worth checking out. | ||
| Red Wings: Aces of the Sky | Combat Flight Simulator | B- |
tl;drRed Wings: Aces of the Sky is a Combat Flight Simulator where players take the role of a German fighter pilot during World War I. The core gameplay here is good, but the missions are too repetitive, and the environments lack any sort of variety beyond their appearance. This is a decent framework for a Combat Flight Sim, but it needs more work to be a truly great entry in the genre. | ||
| Sega Ages Space Harrier | On-Rails Shooter | B- |
tl;drSpace Harrier is a classic On-Rails Shooter originally released to arcades in 1985. While the limitations of the time mean that both the visuals and the gameplay show their age, this is nevertheless still a fun game even today, and it’s a solid port too. Definitely worth a look for fans of classic games or those looking for a solid action title. | ||
| Skies of Fury DX | Combat Flight Simulator | B- |
tl;drSkies of Fury DX is a WWI-era Combat Flight Sim, and what it does, it does well. The gameplay is solid, the graphics are good, and four players can have a blast in the 2v2 multiplayer mode. It’s just a shame the game is so lacking when it comes to the variety department, because it could have been even better. | ||
| Sky Rogue | Combat Flight Simulator | B- |
tl;drSky Rogue is a Combat Flight Sim with extremely old-school low-poly graphics. Its gameplay is surprisingly solid, with very stable 2-player splitscreen co-op, and the “Danger Zone” motion-sensing control option is absolutely inspired, but the lack of variety and polish makes the game feel incomplete. | ||
| War Tech Fighters | Space Combat Game | B- |
tl;drWar Tech Fighters is a Space Combat game where you’re flying through space and taking on enemies in a fully-customizable mech. The space combat and mech customization here are both excellent, but those elements are weighed down by numerous frustrations like constant loading screens, repeated cutscenes during combat, unreadably tiny menu text, and sub-standard melee combat. Fans of space combat games and mech games should still give this game a look, but others may find its flaws make the game hard to get into. | ||
| Aero Cosmos | Arcade / Flight Simulator | C+ |
tl;drAero Cosmos is a simple family-friendly Arcade-style Flight Simulator where you try to find glowing orbs in a 3D debris field. It’s a relaxed, trance-like experience, though one that’s repetitive and lacking any meaningful goal structure. Some players may find the relaxed vibe of this game worth the $2.50 price, but most will find the lack of structure, challenge, or variety will make them lose interest quickly. | ||
| Panzer Dragoon: Remake | On-Rails Shooter | C+ |
tl;drPanzer Dragoon: Remake is a completely-remade version of the classic Sega Saturn On-Rails Shooter that began the series. The graphics here are much better… though still not great. And there are more control options… but the controls are still a bit too limited. And the game was released at a budget price… but it’s only a few hours long. Compared to the original game, this is still a huge improvement, but by today’s standards it’s lacking in multiple ways. As a result, this is mostly a game for those looking to relive the glory days with a modern retouch, not for those who missed out on it the first time and want to see what the fuss was about. | ||
| Red Wings: American Aces | Combat Flight Simulator | C+ |
tl;drRed Wings: American Aces is a Combat Flight Simulator where players take the role of an American fighter pilot during World War I. The core gameplay here is good, but the missions are too repetitive, and the environments lack any sort of variety beyond their appearance. Even worse, while this game reuses gameplay and content from the previous game, the most significant addition it makes is a frustratingly high difficulty level. If you want a Combat Flight Simulator on Nintendo Switch, look elsewhere. | ||
| The Falconeer: Warrior Edition | Open-World Combat Flight Simulator | C+ |
tl;drThe Falconeer is an Open-World Combat Flight Sim that has players piloting a bird in a fantasy world covered in ocean. The concept and core gameplay here is good, but the game’s large world is too empty and spread thin, and the RPG elements don’t seem well-implemented. This is still a decent game, but it needed more work to be a truly great one. | ||
| Wing of Darkness | Combat Flight Sim | C+ |
tl;drWing of Darkness is a Combat Flight Sim that has players flying a versatile aircraft against mysterious enemy attackers. The movement in this game feels great, but the combat is far too simple and the story’s pacing is too slow. This can still be enjoyable, but it definitely feels like it could have used more work. | ||
| FUR Squadron | On-Rails Shooter | C |
tl;drFUR Squadron is an On-Rails Shooter that was clearly inspired by the Star Fox Franchise, and for the most part, it succeeds in replicating that franchise’s gameplay. Unfortunately, the 80s-esque wireframe “Virtual Reality” visuals are too bland and samey, the controls for aiming near the edges of the screen are horrible, and the game can be completed within a half hour. Players looking for a new Star Fox substitute on Nintendo Switch should keep looking. | ||
| Space Commander: War and Trade | Combat Flight Sim / Simulation | C |
tl;drSpace Commander is a Combat Flight Sim that has players controlling spacecraft in combat with enemies while also building up your small fleet of ships in a Trade Simulation. While it’s a fun blending of elements, both sides of that formula have problems, with repetitive combat, clunky menu design, and balance issues leftover from microtransaction-ridden design from other platforms. It can still be enjoyable, but only if you put up with far too many poor design choices. | ||
| Ultrawings Flat | Flight Sim | C |
tl;drUltrawings Flat is a Flight Sim that follows in the footsteps of the Pilotwings series, and the core gameplay here is excellent, but everything else is a mess. Sub-par graphics, terrible music, lacking options, bad menu interface, frustrating game progression… if you can look past this game’s laundry list of problems, there’s still some real enjoyment to be had, but as-is it’s a bit of a mess. | ||
| A Glider’s Journey | Flight Simulator | C- |
tl;drA Glider’s Journey is a simple, family-friendly Flight Simulator where players guide a glider through a series of rings to reach a landing platform. Unfortunately, the gameplay here is so simple that it lacks any sort of fun or challenge, and the stylistically nice presentation is undercut by performance issues. This might have still been an okay time-waster, but $10 is just too much to ask for a game this simple. Unless you want “Baby’s first Flight Sim”, skip this game. | ||
| Drone Fight | Racing Flight Sim | C- |
tl;drDrone Fight is a Racing Flight Sim that has players piloting drones in a race through a series of rings. While there was potential here, just about every part of this game suffers from amateurish flaws that leave it not worth bothering with. | ||
| I.F.O | On-Rails Space Combat Game | C- |
tl;drLost Future Omega combines On-Rails Space Combat with dynamic music that is affected by your actions, much like the classic game Rez. Unfortunately both the game’s graphics and its gameplay are far more repetitive and less interesting than that game. | ||
| Sega Ages G-LOC Air Battle | On-Rails Shooter | C- |
tl;drG-LOC is a faux-3D On-Rails Shooter originally released to arcades in 1990, and while this is a superb port that does a great job recreating the arcade experience on a home console, the game at the center of it all is extremely flawed, with the outdated graphics making it difficult to aim, and the frustrating controls causing problems turning and even bigger problems with accidental barrel roll maneuvers. Unless you’re a Sega die-hard, skip this one. | ||
| Warhammer 40,000: Dakka Squadron | Combat Flight Sim | C- |
tl;drDakka Squadron is a Combat Flight Simulator that has you fighting battles as an orc in an armed aircraft. The gameplay here is mostly decent, and even has a few unique features, but this game just falls flat on its face on Nintendo Switch due to some absolutely severe performance issues. Fans of this franchise or this genre may want to check this game out on PC, but skip the Nintendo Switch version. | ||
| Dogfight | Combat Flight Sim | D |
tl;drDogfight is a Combat Flight Sim featuring modern aircraft. Unfortunately, the game is severely lacking polish and even a basic level of interface options, which makes the game’s horrendously bad control scheme all the worse. The result is a game that’s simply not fun. | ||
| Flying Girl Striker | On-Rails Shooter | D |
tl;drFlying Girl Striker is a Panzer Dragoon/Star Fox-style On-Rails Shooter where you control a girl riding on an armed glider. Unfortunately, the graphics are underwhelming and the gameplay forces players to choose between a weapon that almost always misses or a weapon that virtually never misses, with neither one being fun to use. Skip this game. | ||
| Striker Modes | Combat Flight Simulator | D |
tl;drStriker Modes is a Combat Flight Simulator with various scenarios ranging from historic to futuristic, where players must take out as many enemies as possible before being destroyed. While the variety of game modes is good, each of these game modes quickly gets repetitive and boring, with things made worse by a terrible camera. You have better options than this on Nintendo Switch. | ||
| Airplane Flight Simulator: Dangerous Landings | Flight Sim | D- |
tl;drAirplane Flight Simulator: Dangerous Landings is a Flight Simulator that marginally improves on its disastrous predecessor and presents an interesting theme of recovering from airplane disasters, but ultimately still suffers from far too many of the issues that plagued the previous game. Even though this is an improvement, it is still an absolutely terrible game, and I cannot recommend it. | ||
| F-117A Stealth Fighter | Combat Flight Sim | D- |
tl;drF-117A Stealth Fighter is a port of an only Nintendo Entertainment System Combat Flight Sim, but even when this game was first released it wasn’t an especially good game, and time has not been kind to it. Unless you somehow harbor nostalgia for this game, don’t waste your money on it. | ||
| Landing Hero Haneda × 787 | Flight Sim | D- |
tl;drLanding Hero is a Flight Simulator that is extremely niche in its focus – players pilot only one type of plane, flying into only one airport, and they only control the landing of the plane, not takeoff or mid-flight. Add to this some terrible graphics, pathetically scarce options, and a laughably bloated $30, and it’s hard to imagine anyone finding this game worth buying. Even when this game goes on sale for $2, I think this is only going to be a waste of $2. | ||
| Airplane Flight Simulator | Flight Sim | F |
tl;drAirplane Flight Simulator (or whatever name it’s going by right now) is a Flight Simulator that fails on every level, with maps that don’t even come close to accurately representing the locations they list, terrible controls, ugly visuals, and numerous elements that are outright broken. This game died in a plane crash, and the corpse is unrecognizable. I doubt even the black box could make sense of what happened here. | ||
| Fly the Bird | Arcade / On-Rails Flight Sim | F |
tl;drFly the Bird is an Arcade-style On-Rails Flight Sim that has you flying a bird through rings. The presentation is decent, and there was some potential here for a nice, trance-like experience. Unfortunately, that is absolutely ruined by the game ramping up its speed so quickly that it becomes virtually unplayable within a minute of firing it up. Don’t waste your time with this one. | ||
| Sky Ride | Third-Person Action | F |
tl;drSky Ride is a Third-Person Action game that’s a broken, unfinished mess. I don’t know what this game was aiming for, but it was clearly released well before it reached anything worthwhile. | ||
.
Action Brawler (Musou)
| Game | Genre | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity | Action Brawler | A |
tl;drHyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, like the first Hyrule Warriors game, is a “musou”-style game in the same vein as the Dynasty Wars series. This time, this game ties directly into the plot of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, exploring the events that preceded that game in some creative ways. What’s more, the presentation, the visuals and music, the style, and numerous gameplay elements all tie back to Breath of the Wild. On top of that, the split-screen co-op here is absolutely phenomenal. Only a few flaws here (like occasionally repetitive combat and some frequent nasty slowdown) keep this game from true greatness, but even with these flaws this is still an outstanding game that most Switch owners would do well to check out. | ||
| Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes | Action Brawler | A- |
tl;drFire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes evolves the first Fire Emblem Warriors’ combination of Musou-style Action Brawler gameplay and strategic elements, pairing it with an excellent alternate story using the world and characters from Fire Emblem: Three Houses. The Musou-style gameplay is still somewhat shallow, and the game still has some technical issues, overall this is a fun action-packed experience that both Musou fans and Fire Emblem fans will want to get. | ||
| Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition | Action Brawler | A- |
tl;drHyrule Warriors is a Dynasty Warriors-style Action Brawler with a Zelda setting and characters. It looks a bit dated and has a few issues here and there, but it’s an absolute blast to play in co-op… once you look up online how to actually play in co-op. | ||
| Fire Emblem Warriors | Action Brawler | B+ |
tl;drFire Emblem Warriors combines the Musou-style action-focused gameplay of games like Hyrule Warriors and Dynasty Warriors with some of the strategic elements of the Fire Emblem franchise, along with tons of (sometimes embarrassing) fan service for that series, resulting in a game that’s delightfully fun, if a bit shallow. Map and menu issues detract from this game a bit, but overall this is a wonderful action-packed romp. | ||
| Samurai Warriors 5 | Action Brawler | B- |
tl;drSamurai Warriors 5 is a “Musou”-style Action Brawler following a young Oda Nobunaga, with this game bringing deeper RPG mechanics and customizable skill loadouts to the genre. Unfortunately, despite a large focus on story, it feels extremely disposable here, and the game mechanics aren’t quite as memorable as what we saw in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity of Fire Emblem: Three Hopes. Musou fans may still want to give this a look, but those looking to dip their toe into the genre have better options on Nintendo Switch. | ||
.
Action (General)
| Game | Genre | Grade | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hades | Action / Roguelike | A | |
tl;drHades is an Action-packed isometric Roguelike that has you fighting through hordes of enemies with mix-and-match enhancements gifted to you by a cast of Greek gods, with this game’s mythological cast all superbly written and impeccably voice-acted. This game’s marriage of great storytelling, great action, and great mix of Roguelike elements that all tie into each other makes for a phenomenal game. Do not miss it. | |||
| Hades II | Action / Roguelike | A | |
tl;drHades II is an excellent follow-up to its predecessor, a fine Action Roguelike with an absolute ton of content, and that follows in the footsteps of its predecessor while changing things enough that this feels like a very different sort of game while still fitting in with the original. The Nintendo Switch version is visually the ugliest way to play the game, but it still plays perfectly fine, and if you’re looking to play a truly excellent Action game on the go, this is well worth picking up. | |||
| Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice | Graphic Adventure / Action | A | |
tl;drHellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is an absolutely fantastic Graphic Adventure that delivers an incredibly immersive experience as players are put in the shoes of someone with severe mental illness on a journey into a hellish fantasy domain. The Switch version isn’t quite as impressive as what’s on other platforms, but it still looks fantastic – one of the best-looking games on the Switch. And while the action sequences aren’t quite up to par with the rest of the game, on the whole this is a superb experience that is a truly must-play game. | |||
| Luigi’s Mansion 3 | Puzzle / Action | A | |
tl;drLuigi’s Mansion 3 is an absolutely gorgeous family-friendly game about Mario’s cowardly brother once again having to save the day by using a vacuum to suck up ghosts in a haunted mansion er, hotel. This game has a stunning presentation, that makes it one of the best-looking games on the Nintendo Switch, as well as excellent gameplay that combines Puzzle and Action elements with exploration in a way that’s truly unique. There are a few areas that could do with improvement, but overall this is absolutely a top-tier game on the Nintendo Switch that everyone who owns the console should consider getting. | |||
| Ape Out | Top-Down Action | A- | |
tl;drApe Out is a fantastic action game that’s a hidden gem in the Switch’s game library. While the gameplay is a bit simplistic, the presentation is top-notch and makes this a fun, unique, and memorable experience. | |||
| Blaster Master Zero | Metroidvania / Top-Down Action | A- | |
tl;drBlaster Master Zero is a remake/reboot of the Nintendo Entertainment System classic Action-packed Metroidvania that I would argue is superior to the original, modernizing it and making it a far more playable game by today’s standards. There are still areas where it could do with improvement, but overall this is a phenomenal Metroidvania that straddles the line between old-school and modern design brilliantly. | |||
| Blaster Master Zero 2 | Metroidvania / Top-Down Action | A- | |
tl;drLike its predecessor, Blaster Master Zero 2 is an Action-packed Metroidvania in the same style of the original Nintendo Entertainment System game, although this game is completely new, building on the formula laid down in Blaster Master Zero while adding new gameplay elements that are worked into the game’s design and really do a good job of improving the overall experience. This game does still suffer the same flaws its predecessor had, but overall it’s a better experience, and a fantastic game fans of Metroidvanias and Action games should give a try. | |||
| Blaster Master Zero III | Metroidvania / Top-Down Action | A- | |
tl;drBlaster Master Zero III is the third and purportedly final entry in this trilogy of reboot Metroidvania/Top-Down Action games inspired by the 1988 classic, and I would argue that it is the best in the series, taking everything that was great about Blaster Master Zero 2 and improving on it with more cohesive Metroidvania elements, subtle quality-of-life improvements, and overall better progression, with the same great gameplay and retro-style presentation. While not without its flaws, overall if you’re looking for a modern game that channels the spirit of the best that the 8- and 16-bit era had to offer, you should definitely grab this game. | |||
| Hotline Miami Collection | Compilation / Top-Down Action / 2-Stick Shooter | A- | |
tl;drHotline Miami Collection is a pair of solid Top-Down Action games with a colorful 80s-inspired presentation and intense action that makes players consider their plan of attack. It’s a solid experience, although the first Hotline Miami game is clearly the better of the two, thanks to the more cohesive story and better level design. | |||
| Akane | Top-Down Action / 2-Stick Shooter / Arcade | B+ | |
tl;drAkane is an Arcade-y top-down Action game that has players as a lone woman fighting off the entire Yakuza using only a gun and a sword. It’s a game that channels Kill Bill and John Wick extremely well, with some really fun action. Unfortunately, the game is lacking in variety and progression, but the core gameplay here is phenomenal and well worth playing for fans of Action games. | |||
| Boomerang X | First-Person Action | B+ | |
tl;drBoomerang X is a First-Person Action game that has players tossing an X-shaped boomerang around arenas with hordes of enemies, with abilities that have players careening around the place at high speeds. The feeling of freedom and the amount of variety here are outstanding, but counter-balanced somewhat by the feeling that you’re often out-of-control. Still, while it has its drawbacks, this is an immensely fun Action game well worth playing. | |||
| Figment | Graphic Adventure / Top-Down Action | B+ | |
tl;drFigment is a Graphic Adventure that puts you in the role of a resident of a mind under attack by inner demons. The game has some delightfully inventive visuals, memorable characters, and clever puzzles that are just the right amount of tricky. The game’s big flaw is its boring, tedious combat, which is really unnecessary, but also thankfully uncommon through the game. | |||
| Figment 2: Creed Valley | Puzzle / Top-Down Action | B+ | |
tl;drFigment 2 is a family-friendly Puzzle game with Top-Down Action elements set in a metaphorical world inside a man’s mind, that improves on the original Figment in multiple ways, particularly in its puzzle design and music, though the combat is still uninspired. Still, despite this issue this is a great sequel that’s well worth playing for Puzzle fans looking for a trip back into this series’ creative world. | |||
| Figment 1 + 2 | Compilation / Top-Down Action / Puzzle | B+ | |
tl;drFigment 1 + 2 is a Compilation containing the two named games, both family-friendly games that combine Action, Puzzle, and Graphic Adventure elements in an imaginative world set inside the mind. The games are both good, the price is okay, and the sale price is excellent. This is definitely worth getting if you’re a Puzzle game fan, especially if you catch it on sale. | |||
| Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD | Puzzle / Action | B+ | |
tl;drLuigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon is the second game in this Action Puzzle franchise starring Mario’s brother cowering and vacuuming his way through a gorgeous game with tons of personality and a fascinating world to explore. Unfortunately, this release changes little from the original Nintendo 3DS version of the game, and yet it jacks the price up a full $20, making this feel like a rip-off, especially when Luigi’s Mansion 3 is the same price and a better game overall. Play that instead. | |||
| NieR:Automata The End of YoRHa Edition | Open-World Action-RPG / Action | B+ | |
tl;drNieR:Automata is an Open-World Action-RPG that mixes together numerous action-packed genres with consistent but varied gameplay. The Action gameplay here is phenomenal, and the Open-World stuff by comparison is merely “decent”. On top of this, the Nintendo Switch version of the game features a noticeable graphical downgrade from other versions – it’s still perfectly playable, but it definitely has its moments where it seems visually lacking. This results in a game with some really high points that only occasionally get sullied by the game’s flaws. Still, if you’re a fan of Action games, this is one you won’t want to miss. | |||
| Anarcute | Action | B | |
tl;drAnarcute is an Action game where players gather together a riotous mob of cute anthropomorphic animals to take down an oppressive dictatorship. There are a few control issues, and this game isn’t quite as ambitious as it feels like it could be, but overall this is a fun destructive time well worth playing. | |||
| Aragami: Shadow Edition | Stealth Action | B | |
tl;drAragami is a Stealth Action game where you play a vengeful shadow spirit stalking enemies and avoiding light sources. It’s a fun game for the most part, though it falters whenever you’re caught. Worth a look for fans of the genre. | |||
| Clone Drone in the Danger Zone | Third-Person Action | B | |
tl;drClone Drone in the Danger Zone is a Third-Person Action game that has players fighting robots in gladiatorial combat with one hit kill mechanics. This game looks and plays somewhat amateurish in its design, yet despite itself it’s still surprisingly fun to play, especially in co-op (with cross-platform play, even), and has hidden depths hidden under its unimpressive exterior and performance issues. If you can look past those issues, you’ll find Clone Drone to be an Action game with some compelling gameplay that will keep you coming back for just “one more run”. | |||
| Deflector | Action / Roguelike | B | |
tl;drDeflector is an Action Roguelike where players take the role of a test subject created to combat an organic virus. The gameplay here is solid, and this game’s use of elements of Bullet Hell Shmups, as well as its central deflection mechanic, help to set it apart from other games in the genre. That’s good, because Deflector can’t compete with the likes of Hades in terms of that game’s fluid and satisfying combat and wonderful story and characters. However, Deflector manages to be unique enough to be worth trying out despite this, especially if you’re a fan of this style of game. | |||
| Gori: Cuddly Carnage | Action | B | |
tl;drGori: Cuddly Carnage is an Action game where players fight hordes of cute/grotesque robotic toy enemies as a toy cat on a hoverboard. The presentation is over-the-top and hyper-violent, the visuals strikingly garish, and the action is fast-paced and frenetic. There are a few frustrating issues like a bad camera, and this game definitely won’t be for everyone, but those not put off by its loud and eccentric nature will find this to be a wonderful Action game. | |||
| Hyper Jam | Top-Down Action / Party Game | B | |
tl;drHyper Jam is a multiplayer-focused arena-based Top-Down Action Game that has up to four players fighting it out in a cyberpunk setting. The action here is excellent, and although the game is lacking somewhat in options and weapon variety, it makes up for it by handing out random upgrades between matches that ensure each match is different. I would love to see this game expanded upon, but as-is this is a fantastic action-packed Party Game well worth adding to your collection. | |||
| Invisigun Reloaded | Top-Down Action / Arcade / Stealth | B | |
tl;drInvisigun Reloaded is a Top-Down Action game where players are all invisible until they do something to give themselves away. The fact that you can’t see your own character unless you slip up may not appeal to everyone, but those who don’t mind this annoying side-effect of the premise will find this game to be a superb competitive action game. | |||
| Lost in Random: The Eternal Die | Action / Roguelike | B | |
tl;drLost in Random: The Eternal Die is an Action-focused Roguelike and spinoff of the original game that copies much of the formula of the Hades franchise, and while it doesn’t reach those same heights, it brings enough unique and interesting elements to the table that fans of this style of game would do well to give this game a look. | |||
| ACA NEOGEO Crossed Swords | Arcade / Action | B- | |
tl;drCrossed Swords is an Arcade-style Action game that has players using a sword and shield to fight enemies with gameplay vaguely similar to the Punch-Out!! franchise. It’s a unique approach, and it’s done well here, but this game’s challenge level is still exceptionally high in a way that may put off most players. If that doesn’t make you wary, I’d say this game is well worth a look. | |||
| City of Brass | First-Person Action | B- | |
tl;drCity of Brass is a First-Person Action game with Roguelike elements that has you using a sword and whip to slash your way through enemies and try to avoid traps in a shifting ancient Arabian city. The core gameplay here is good, but the Roguelike elements can be a bit frustrating. Still, those who don’t mind a challenge might find this game worthwhile. | |||
| Gotta Protectors: Cart of Darkness | Action / Strategy | B- | |
tl;drGotta Protectors: Cart of Darkness is a game that combines Action and Strategy elements as players protect a princess in a mobile castle as it travels on rails to bash into an enemy stronghold. It’s a fairly unique and enjoyable game, but it’s nowhere near as good as its Nintendo 3DS predecessor. | |||
| Pocky & Rocky Reshrined | Top-Down Action | B- | |
tl;drPocky & Rocky Reshrined is a Top-Down Action game that’s not a remake of the SNES classic so much as it is a ground-up reimagining of that game. It looks and sounds great, has some fun mechanics, and is great in co-op, but it is punishingly difficult. However, if you and a friend crave a challenge, I think you’ll find this to be a fun time. | |||
| Star Wars: The Force Unleashed | Action | B- | |
tl;drStar Wars: The Force Unleashed is an upscaled remaster of the Wii version of this Action game that results in what is arguably the best version of this game yet. The action here is delightful and this release polishes the game up and adds much-appreciated gamepad controls. At the same time, this is a pretty shallow and repetitive game, and some gameplay elements have aged better than others. Overall this is still an enjoyable Action game in the Star Wars universe, but not a great one. | |||
| Arcade Archives Metal Hawk | Top-Down Action | C+ | |
tl;drMetal Hawk is a Top-Down Action game that’s fairly unique, though it’s limited by awkward controls and limited view area, and it lacks the novelty of the original Arcade cabinet. Players curious to try out an obscure oddity may find this worth a look, but the game’s flaws likely mean that most won’t be playing this game for too long. | |||
| Bloodroots | Top-Down Action | C+ | |
tl;drBloodroots is a Top-Down Action game where players grab anything they can get their hands on to use as a weapon, with the game playing kinda’ like a melee-focused Hotline Miami. Unfortunately, the melee focus and isometric perspective make it a bit too easy to misjudge things, die, and have to try again, which is a recipe for frustration. The result is a game that’s at turns fun and aggravating. | |||
| Calturin | Top-Down Action | C+ | |
tl;drCalturin is a Top-Down Action game that has players controlling a mage who has been resurrected by a necromancer, and who must obey the necromancer’s command to work their way through dangerous traps and deadly enemies. There is some clever boss design and puzzle design here, but the game is just as often frustrating due to some poor design choices that limit your abilities. The result is a game that’s decent, but doesn’t hold up to other similar games. | |||
| Daemon X Machina | Third-Person Action | C+ | |
tl;drDaemon X Machina is a third-person mech Action game with a striking anime look that controls well and has some good customization elements, but it’s brought down somewhat by its incomprehensible story crowding in on the action, a lock-on feature that could do with improvement, and a slow buildup of its customization features. In the end, this is still a good game, but its flaws stand in the way of it being a much better one. | |||
| Going Under | Action / Roguelike | C+ | |
tl;drGoing Under is an Action Roguelike that puts you in the role of a low-level office worker sent into the dungeons below her tech company to slay monsters. This game has a unique presentation, some good office satire, and a lot of variety, but the combat is somewhat lacking and the weapon-breaking game element is frustrating. It’s still a decent Roguelike, but it comes nowhere close to challenging the likes of Hades. | |||
| Raspberry Mash | Roguelike Top-Down Action / 2-Stick Shooter | C+ | |
tl;drRaspberry Mash is a Top-Down Action game with Roguelike and 2-Stick Shooter elements. Unfortunately, while the melee in this game is really fun and visceral, the ranged weaponry is pretty terrible, and the way the game forces you to slow down to contend with ranged threats wrecks the game’s pacing. This is definitely not a bad entry in this genre, but there are just far too many other better games in this genre to waste your time with this one. | |||
| Road Redemption | Arcade Racing / Action / Roguelike | C+ | |
tl;drRoad Redemption is a modern re-imagining of the classic game Road Rash, with players racing a motorcycle down a freeway and fighting off other bikers along the way. It’s a unique formula that’s made even better with modern visuals and Roguelike elements, but the way players are asked to multitask racing and fighting feels like it’s far too demanding for most players. As a result, this game is sure to have its appeal, but only to the narrow target audience of players who can manage this game’s balancing act. | |||
| Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse | Action | C+ | |
tl;drStubbs the Zombie is an Action game where players control the titular zombie as he wreaks havoc on the game’s retro-futuristic town, attacking its citizens and turning them into more zombies. This game has its charms, but overall it seems shallow and repetitive. It’s mildly entertaining in short bursts, but not much more than that. | |||
| Trouserheart | Top-Down Action | C+ | |
tl;drTrouserheart is a family-friendly Top-Down Action game about a king fighting his way through hordes of enemies to retrieve his stolen trousers. The presentation here is fantastic, and the game has a simplicity and low challenge level ideal for youngsters. Unfortunately though, more seasoned gamers will be turned off by how repetitive it is, along with multiple frustrating design issues. | |||
| World of Tanks Blitz | Action | C+ | |
tl;drWorld of Tanks Blitz is a Free-to-Play online team competitive Action game where teams of seven compete in tanks they can collect and upgrade. Unfortunately, the visuals aren’t very impressive, the controls are awkward, and the further you progress the more the game tries to force you into playing more sluggish, lumbering tanks. At least at first, I did have a lot of fun with this game, but that fun declined pretty quickly once I realized progressing further into the game was making it less fun. | |||
| Cyjin: The Cyborg Ninja | Action | C | |
tl;drCyjin is an Action game where players must direct a cyborg ninja leaping from surface to surface via line-of-sight, destroying enemies he passes in mid-air. This game is a decent time-waster, but the tedious nature of movement in this game really keeps it from being much more than that. | |||
| Flame Keeper | Action / Roguelike | C | |
tl;drFlame Keeper is an Isometric Action Game with Roguelike elements where players take the role of an anthropomorphic piece of flaming coal fighting dark creatures and trying to return flame to massive pyres. There are some interesting ideas at the heart of this game, such as a system where players must use their own life force, fire, as a currency to unlock progress. However, these interesting elements usually just make for more tedium as you grind to refill your fire over and over again. This game isn’t without its charms, but you have better options within the genre. | |||
| Mini Island Challenge Bundle | Compilation / Action | C | |
tl;drMini Island Challenge Bundle is a Compilation of four games… that really just feels like one game with four different skins. In any case, this is a selection of four boss rush-style Action games, and while the core action here is decent, it’s also somewhat shallow and lacking variety. The result is a game you might enjoy for a little while, but not one you’re likely to play for very long. | |||
| Mixx Island Remix Plus | Action | C | |
tl;drAs with its predecessor, Mixx Island is a boss rush-style Action game, and while the core action here is decent, it’s also somewhat shallow and lacking variety. The result is a game you might enjoy for a little while, but not one you’re likely to play for very long. | |||
| Onimusha Warlords | Action / Spectacle Fighter | C | |
tl;drOnimusha is an Action game that’s a few steps short of being a Spectacle Fighter like Devil May Cry (a game inspired by Onimusha’s development). Its graphics have been improved in this Switch release, but the game overall still feels like an archaic relic of the past, with outdated game design that pales next to more modern games on the Switch. It’s not bad, but there are better options for Switch Owners looking for this sort of game. | |||
| Ruiner | Top-Down Action / 2-Stick Shooter | C | |
tl;drRuiner is a Top-Down Action game in the vein of Hotline Miami where players take the role of a masked man in a cyberpunk setting. There are some interesting gameplay systems here, such as a time-manipulating multi-dash move, but these gameplay systems aren’t utilized well, and the basic flaws in the game’s combat lead the action to all too often be unsatisfying. This isn’t a bad game, but it’s nowhere near as good as it had the potential to be. | |||
| Virus Rush | Action / 2-Stick Shooter | C | |
tl;drVirus Rush is an Action game with 2-Stick Shooter elements that has players taking the role of a sentient virus fighting microscopic enemies in a boss rush-style gauntlet. The presentation is distinct, but this game tosses numerous frustrations at the player and then ramps up the difficulty to absurd levels right from the start, making for an experience that all but the most challenge-addicted players will find extremely unsatisfying. | |||
| Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Ghoul Patrol | Compilation / Top-Down Action | C | |
tl;drZombies Ate My Neighbors and Ghoul Patrol is a Compilation of two 16-bit Top-Down Action games – one which is a fun but flawed classic, and one that’s just plain awful. There are a handful of extra features included as well, but for the most part this collection’s value will likely depend on how much nostalgia you have for this package’s one worthwhile game. | |||
| ACA NEOGEO The Super Spy | First-Person Arcade / Action | C- | |
tl;drThe Super Spy is a First-Person Arcade-style Action game that puts players in the role of a spy fighting terrorists with fists, hand weapons, and occasionally guns. It’s a fairly unique game, but it’s too shallow to hold your interest for very long, and the fantasy-themed Crossed Swords does this style of gameplay (more or less) much better. | |||
| BE-A Walker | Action | C- | |
tl;drBE-A Walker is an Action game where players pilot a bipedal mech and fight off hordes of tribal enemies. While the concept had great potential for destructive fun, the reality is that the game does everything it can to make players feel less powerful and more vulnerable. If you’ve ever wanted to blast away Ewoks as the evil Empire, this game seems designed to convince you that the reality of this dream is tedious, nerve-wracking, and more frustrating than fun. | |||
| Cover Fire: Offline Shooting Game | Shooting Gallery Game | C- | |
tl;drCover Fire is a Shooting Gallery Game that plays like a simplified cover-based shooter. The core mechanics of the gameplay are fun, but this game is crippled by its extremely insistent microtransactions and wait mechanics constantly harassing you. As a result, what could have been a fun, lighthearted game just ends up feeling gross. Don’t waste your time with it. | |||
| Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order | Action | C- | |
tl;drMarvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is an Action game that has you fighting as one of the countless Marvel comic book heroes against the threat of Thanos and his minions. While there’s a wide array of lovingly-detailed characters, the combat here is shallow, repetitive, and tedious, the camera is terrible, and there are a slew of other issues that sap the fun out of this game. As a result, only the biggest Marvel die-hards should bother with this one. | |||
| My Hero Ultra Rumble | Action | C- | |
tl;drMy Hero Ultra Rumble is a game that combines the characters of the My Hero Academia setting with the online multiplayer mayhem of a Battle Royale-style Action game. It’s not a bad idea in theory, but in practice the action is a nasty mess, and as a result it’s a difficult game to recommend. | |||
| Ninjala | Action | C- | |
tl;drNinjala is a Free-to-Play Online-focused Action game, and while it features a slick, polished presentation that has garnered a lot of positive comparisons to the Splatoon series, the gameplay is a messy, repetitive, button-mashy mess. | |||
| Sea Salt | Top-Down Action / Real-Time Strategy | C- | |
tl;drSea Salt is a game that combines elements of Top-Down Action and Real-Time Strategy as you control a horde of sea creatures wreaking havoc on humanity at the behest of an angry sea deity. Unfortunately, this game doesn’t work as an Action game or a Strategy game, as your command over the horde is so imprecise that you ultimately just end up frustrated at your lack of control. While this is a unique game with interesting ideas, it’s not ultimately a game I can recommend. | |||
| Wild Guns Reloaded | Arcade / Shooting Gallery | C- | |
tl;drWild Guns Reloaded takes the arcade classic Shooting Gallery game, where you target enemies onscreen while dodging bullets with your character, and adds two new characters while cleaning up the visuals. Unfortunately, the gameplay has not aged well, and frustration with the controls and punishing difficulty make it hard to recommend. | |||
| Arcade Archives The Genji and the Heike Clans | Action-Platformer / Top-Down Action | D+ | |
tl;drThe Genji and the Heike Clans blends two different types of Action-Platformer with Top-Down Action, but none of these types of gameplay feels especially well-done, and they’re all pretty unpolished. While I appreciate this game’s ambition, I don’t recommend you play it. | |||
| Bleach: Brave Souls | Action | D+ | |
tl;drBleach: Brave Souls is a free-to-play Action game where players theoretically fight enemies, but in reality they’ll spend most of their time in menus and on loading screens, and what little gameplay is here is absurdly easy, and made even easier by the wealth of free stuff the game gives you at its outset. Only the most staunch fans of the franchise will want to play this, and even they are better off spending their time just rewatching the show. | |||
| Sega Ages Gain Ground | Top-Down Action | D+ | |
tl;drGain Ground is a top-down action game a bit like the classic Gauntlet, except the characters move slow as molasses. If you really want to try this game, get the Sega Genesis Classics collection – at least that way you have some other good games to play after you see how bad this one is. | |||
| Sword of Glory | Roguelike / Action | D+ | |
tl;drSword of Glory is a Roguelike Action game where players are essentially just participating in a series of gladiatorial fights. Unfortunately, virtually everything about this game is poorly-constructed, amateurish, and unpolished, and while the Roguelike elements aren’t bad, that doesn’t make up for the poor combat, the nonsensical story, the ugly visuals, the terrible sound design… in short, don’t get this game. | |||
| Ailment | Top-Down Action / Horror | D | |
tl;drAilment is a Top-Down Action game that has you fighting zombies in repetitive spacecraft corridors. Unfortunately, the game forces shoddy auto-aim on the player, has poor framerates, and has game design that simply isn’t conducive to this sort of Action game. Not worth your time. | |||
| Arcade Archives Kiki Kaikai | Top-Down Action | D | |
tl;drKiki Kaikai is a Top-Down Action game that puts players in the role of a Shinto shrine maiden fighting Japanese spirits and monsters. This is the first game in the Pocky & Rocky franchise, and much like its sequels it is punishingly difficult. Plus, with this game appearing in the much better-priced Taito Milestones 2, it’s difficult to recommend this game to anyone. Unless you’re a huge fan of this series, skip this one. | |||
| Dark Dungeon Warrior | Third-Person Action | D | |
tl;drDark Dungeon Warrior is a Third-Person Action game that has players fighting hordes of spawning enemies in a medieval fantasy setting. This game’s combat is highly unsatisfying, and its enemy AI is as dumb as rocks. This is not worth your time. | |||
| Explosive Jake | Top-Down Action / Arcade | D | |
tl;drExplosive Jake is a low-effort unimaginative Bomberman clone with slow pacing, poor controls, and no multiplayer. Don’t waste your time or money on this. | |||
| Gun Skaters | Top-Down Action / Arcade | D | |
tl;drGun Skaters is a multiplayer-focused Top-Down Action game where players shoot at each other while wildly moving around on skates. This game controls poorly, has a terrible lack of content, has empty online servers… in short, this game gets a lot wrong and very little right. Skip it. | |||
| Modern War: Tank Battle | Action | D | |
tl;drModern War: Tank Battle is an absolutely horrendous Action game where players drive tanks with ugly visuals, poor controls, and overall terrible gameplay. Do not waste money on this. | |||
| Nintendo LABO Toy-Con 02: Robot Kit | Accessory / Minigame Collection / Action / Misc. | D | |
tl;drNintendo LABO Toy-Con 02: Robot Kit is a really unique hybrid of a Minigame Collection, a series of Accessories you create yourself using the included pieces of custom-made cardboard, and a Misc. tool you can use to explore the features of the Nintendo Joy-Con controllers. However, compared to all of the other Nintendo LABO kits, this one is worse in just about every way – there are fewer minigames on offer with less variety and frustrating, awkward gameplay, with glorified menu screens presented as minigames to make up the difference. There’s also nothing here that can be used in other videogames, unlike the other LABO kits. And what little fun there is to be found here are features that are already in the other much better LABO kits. If you want to try Nintendo LABO, go for any of the other LABO kits, this one is the worst of the lot. | |||
| Tanki Online | Action | D | |
tl;drTanki Online is a free-to-play Action game that has players competing in arenas using custom tanks. The core gameplay here is simple but not bad, but it’s ruined by maps that are far too small, lobbies filled with bots, and gross monetization with pay-to-win elements. You’re better off playing the similar World of Tanks Blitz instead of this. | |||
| Techno Tanks | Top-Down Action | D | |
tl;drTechno Tanks is a Top-Down Action game where players control tanks fighting other tanks in simple levels. This game’s visuals are unimpressive, its controls are terrible, and the enemy AI is absurdly dumb. Don’t bother with this game. | |||
| Zombie’s Cool | Top-Down Action | D | |
tl;drZombie’s Cool is a bland, uninteresting zombie-killing Top-Down Shooter that’s far too repetitive to be worth playing with so many better alternatives on the Nintendo Switch. | |||
| Battle & Crash | Car Combat | D- | |
tl;drBattle & Crash is an isometric Car Combat game that’s just terrible. Ugly graphics, mindless gameplay, bad AI, and a serious lack of options are some of the more notable flaws in a game that seems like it was amateurishly put together. Do not buy this game. | |||
| Sheep in Hell | Action | D- | |
tl;drSheep in Hell is an isometric Action game that has you as a wolf exploring rooms and getting mobbed by attacking sheep. It’s dull, mindless, repetitive, and it has a terrible presentation. There’s nothing here worth bothering with. | |||
| Star Wars: Episode I: Jedi Power Battles | Action | D- | |
tl;drStar Wars: Episode I: Jedi Power Battles is an Action game set during the first of the Star Wars prequels, and it’s even worse than the movie is. Everything from the combat to the platforming is terrible here, and the visuals haven’t aged well either. Do not buy this. | |||
| World War: Tank Battle | Action | D- | |
tl;drWorld War: Tank Battle is an absolutely horrendous Action game where players drive tanks with horribly bad visuals, poor controls, and overall terrible gameplay. Do not waste money on this. | |||
| Bunny Zoo – Animal Battle Royale | Action | F | |
tl;drBunny Zoo is an Action game where players control a furry animal, gather power-ups and weapons, and eliminate the competition. Unfortunately, this game is an incomplete mess, with control issues, game design issues, lacking features, graphical and sound issues. It’s unsatisfying to play and absolutely needed more polish to make it work, not to mention the complete lack of multiplayer. Do not buy this game. | |||
| Neverlast | First-Person Action | F | |
tl;drNeverlast is a First-Person Action game that’s a horrible, shoddy, broken mess, with atrocious framerates, brain-dead combat, and gameplay and world design that was either pushed out the door far too early, or designed by someone who doesn’t understand how games work. In either case, you absolutely should not waste your money on this. | |||
