Here’s the games I have reviewed so far on the Nintendo Switch in this genre, from best to worst. Note: If multiple games have the same score, they will be sorted alphabetically.
Arcade (Other)
| Game | Genre | Grade | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overcooked Special Edition | Arcade / Party | A | |
tl;drOvercooked is an Arcade/Party game where up to four players cooperate to try to prep and cook dishes to order in increasingly crazy kitchens. It’s a fast, frenzied experience that makes for one of the finest co-op experiences available on the Switch. | |||
| Overcooked! 2 | Arcade / Party | A | |
tl;drOvercooked 2, like the first game, is an Arcade/Party game where up to four players cooperate to try to prep and cook dishes to order in increasingly crazy kitchens. And like the first game, it’s a fast, frenzied experience that makes for one of the finest co-op experiences available on the Switch, with subtle improvements throughout that give it a slight edge over the original. | |||
| Overcooked! All You Can Eat | Compilation / Arcade / Party Game | A | |
tl;drOvercooked! All You Can Eat is a Compilation containing enhanced versions of the first two Overcooked games, both family-friendly Arcade-style Party Games with a strong focus on co-op play. While I don’t think the Overcooked games have quite managed to maintain their legendary status as the years have passed, these are still two of the best co-op games ever made, and this package adds multiple features, enhancements, and new content to ensure that this is the definitive version of both games, all at a very reasonable price. I wouldn’t recommend this for players who already own both Overcooked games, but for anyone else who enjoys co-op gameplay, this is absolutely worth getting. | |||
| TowerFall | Platformer / Arcade | A | |
tl;drTowerFall has up to six players in a furious battle shooting arrows at one another or teaming up against enemies in a challenging and rewarding action-packed experience with a fantastic presentation, and with exclusive content that makes the Switch version of the game the definitive way to play it. It’s a bit on the tough side, but if you enjoy skill-based platforming and especially if you want to play with friends, TowerFall is absolutely a game you should own. | |||
| Ball x Pit | Arcade / 2-Stick Shooter / Roguelike / Simulation | A- | |
tl;drBall x Pit is a game that blends a wide variety of disparate genres, such as 2-Stick Shooter, Arcade, Roguelike, and Management Simulation, resulting in something that is wildly unique, offering a lot of depth, yet still highly-accessible and easy to pick up. Consider this a must-have if you’re craving originality, and something still worth checking out even if you just like some of the genres I named. | |||
| CastleStorm | Tower Defense / Arcade | A- | |
tl;drCastleStorm is a side-scrolling Tower Defense game with Arcade-style gameplay elements where players can customize their own castle and then war with opponents in other castles, commanding troops and firing using a ballista to control the battlefield. This is a game that gives players a lot of freedom to make strategic choices, and does a good job making them easy to understand through the game’s campaign. What’s more, this is a fantastic multiplayer game both in co-op and competitive play, local and online (though the online lobbies are empty now), and the Nintendo Switch version is the definitive version of the game, with its excellent touchscreen controls in portable mode. If you enjoy Strategy games and don’t already have this on another platform, you should absolutely give it a try. | |||
| Fly Together! | Arcade | A- | |
tl;drFly Together! Is a family-friendly Arcade-style game like Flight Control, where players control the flight paths of planes as they guide them to airports to deliver passengers. It’s not a new concept, but it’s done exceptionally well here, with particularly great co-op and competitive multiplayer play. The single-player content feels like it could have been fleshed out more, but overall this is an excellent game to add to your rotation of fun multiplayer games on Nintendo Switch. | |||
| Katamari Damacy Reroll | Arcade | A- | |
tl;drKatamari Damacy Reroll takes the excellent and crazy-inventive PS2 game about rolling up objects into a giant ball, and brings it into the modern day with HD resolution, higher framerates, and not much else. Still, as the best version of a fantastic game, it’s well worth getting. | |||
| Sayonara Wild Hearts | Arcade | A- | |
tl;drSayonara Wild Hearts is a cool, stylish Arcade-style game that ties together multiple elements into simple but fast-paced gameplay that repeatedly finds new ways to surprise the player, all while delivering a stellar, memorable presentation. It has some issues with wild fluctuations in difficulty level, and it’s over far too soon, but this is a unique experience well worth having on the Switch. | |||
| Vampire Survivors | Arcade / Roguelike | A- | |
tl;drVampire Survivors is an Arcade-style Roguelike game where players automatically attack, and must work their way through thousands of enemies while carefully selecting their upgrades. The game can seem a bit simple and repetitive at first, and the new 4-player co-op mode is a bit of a mixed bag, but overall this is a delightfully compelling Action game, and at $5 it’s an absolute steal. Definitely a must-have for Action fans. | |||
| Vitamin Connection | 2-Stick Shooter / Arcade | A- | |
tl;drVitamin Connection is a Two-Stick Shooter that splits up the ship’s functions between two Joy-Cons in a way that makes this game ideal for two-player co-op. It’s got an appealing presentation, a great soundtrack, and makes some really clever use of the Joy-Cons’ functionality, and really the only negative things I can say about it are that it’s not a game you can play in portable mode, and it’s not a game you’ll really want to play solo. But if you have a friend to join you, this game is a must-have. | |||
| We Love Katamari Reroll + Royal Reverie | Arcade | A- | |
tl;drWe Love Katamari Reroll + Royal Reverie is a remake of a PlayStation 2 classic Arcade-style game that has you rolling a ball to pick up various objects to make your ball bigger to roll up even bigger objects. This is the second game in the Katamari series, and takes the concept to even kookier places than the first game, but overall remains a great blend of surprisingly compelling gameplay and a delightfully silly nonsensical presentation. This remaster adds a few improvements, but mostly this is a fairly minor update of the classic game rather than an entirely new experience. Having said that, it’s still a joy to play, and I highly recommend it. | |||
| 3D Don’t Die Mr. Robot | Arcade | B+ | |
tl;dr3D Don’t Die, Mr. Robot! is a family-friendly Arcade-style “Avoid-Em-Up” where players evade enemies and take them out indirectly by collecting fruit for chain reaction explosions. This game takes the gameplay of the original game and expands on it with an updated audiovisual presentation and multiple game modes, making for a delightful Arcade-style experience that pushes you to keep coming back for one more run. Definitely worth a look! | |||
| Akane | Top-Down Action / 2-Stick Shooter / Arcade | B+ | |
tl;drAkane is an Arcade-y top-down Action game that has players as a lone woman fighting off the entire Yakuza using only a gun and a sword. It’s a game that channels Kill Bill and John Wick extremely well, with some really fun action. Unfortunately, the game is lacking in variety and progression, but the core gameplay here is phenomenal and well worth playing for fans of Action games. | |||
| Artifact Seeker | Arcade / Roguelike | B+ | |
tl;drArtifact Seeker is a game with Arcade and Roguelike elements that’s similar to Vampire Survivors, with a bit of Slay the Spire tossed in for good measure. It’s a great combination that adds depth to the fun “Bullet Heaven” gameplay, though the terrible menu interface and at times unclear information can be frustrating. Still, this is a great addition to this genre that’s definitely worth trying if you’re looking for a new Vampire Survivors-alike. | |||
| Atari 50: The Anniversary Collection | Compilation / Arcade | B+ | |
tl;drAtari 50 is a Compilation of 115 Atari games dating back over 50 years, with classic Arcade, Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Atari 7800, Atari 800 PC, Atari Lynx, and Atari Jaguar games, along with a few games created just for this collection. Most of these games are complete garbage and not worth playing, but a select few have managed to withstand the test of time, and overall the quality here is higher than what we saw in the Atari Flashback collection, in part thanks to improved controls. What’s more, this game contains an absolute treasure trove of extra features guiding players on a tour through Atari’s first 30 or so years of history, making this game invaluable for those with an interest in the origins of the videogame medium. As a result, this is a solid pickup for fans of retro Arcade games, and an absolute must-have for those wanting to learn about the medium. | |||
| Bit.Trip Collection | Compilation / Music-Rhythm / Arcade | B+ | |
tl;drBit.Trip Collection is a Compilation that includes Bit.Trip Beat, Bit.Trip Core, Bit.Trip Void, Bit.Trip Runner, Bit.Trip Fate, and Bit.Trip Flux. All of the games here are at least okay, with about half of them actually being genuinely good. However, at the extremely generous price of $10, this package is an absolute steal. Even if you’re only getting it for half of the games, it’s still better to get the whole package than to buy the games separately. This is definitely a great choice for anyone who enjoys simple Arcade-style games and Music-Rhythm games in particular. | |||
| Boomerang Fu | Top-Down Arcade / Party Game | B+ | |
tl;drBoomerang Fu is a family-friendly Top-Down Arcade-style Party Game where players play as anthropomorphized food items trying to off one another with boomerangs. The core mechanics here are excellent, giving players a lot of nuance and variety while maintaining simple controls that are easy for anyone to pick up. It could use more content, but overall this is an excellent Party Game well worth adding to your collection. | |||
| Catastronauts | Arcade | B+ | |
tl;drCatastronauts is a family-friendly multiplayer co-op focused Arcade-style game where players scramble around a spaceship in the midst of a battle with an enemy ship, managing multiple tasks. In short, this game plays kinda’ like Overcooked meets Star Trek, with simple but enjoyable gameplay that makes for an excellent co-op experience. Its single-player is a bit lacking, there’s no online, and the stage variety has nothing on Overcooked, but otherwise this is a great game in that same style, and anyone who enjoys that franchise should definitely give this a try. | |||
| Downwell | Arcade / Platformer | B+ | |
tl;drDownwell is an Arcade-style game with Platforming elements, where you are dropping at high speeds down a well while avoiding enemies. Its simple visuals keep the focus on the fast-paced, addictive gameplay, and even though it’s punishingly difficult, you’ll still want to keep coming back for another attempt. | |||
| Duck Game | Action-Platformer / Arcade | B+ | |
tl;drDuck Game is a multiplayer-focused Arcade-style Action-Platformer where players control ducks looking for weapons to kill each other. The fast, frenetic action here is delightful, and while I do have a few complaints, overall this is a superb game for anyone looking to add a great competitive multiplayer game to their Nintendo Switch library. | |||
| Get Packed: Couch Chaos | Top-Down Arcade / Party Game | B+ | |
tl;drGet Packed is a family-friendly Top-Down Arcade / Party Game that has players scrambling to remove items from a property and toss them into a moving truck. The co-op gameplay here is good, but lacking content in a way that ensures it won’t last long. The competitive gameplay, on the other hand, is delightful enough to earn this game a proper spot in your Party Game rotation. | |||
| Goliath Depot | Platformer / Arcade | B+ | |
tl;drGoliath Depot is an Arcade-style Platformer that combines classic arcade-style single-screen game design with superb gameplay mechanics, gameplay variety, and level design, all in a game about shutting doors and windows in response to a machine uprising in a factory. This is the perfect game for those craving a retro-style Platformer with modern sensibilities. | |||
| Horizon Shift ’81 | Arcade / Shmup | B+ | |
tl;drHorizon Shift ’81 is an Arcade-Style game with Shmup elements that incorporates elements of multiple early-80s retro arcade games while still bringing its own unique horizontal-swapping twist on the genre. This is a fantastic game and a wonderful love letter to an era of gaming, although like the games of that era it can be repetitive in places. Overall, this is a superb game well worth playing. | |||
| Killer Queen Black | Action-Platformer / Arcade | B+ | |
tl;drKiller Queen Black is a team-based multiplayer Action-Platformer where eight players compete to see which team is the first to complete one of three goals. It’s amazing fun when it works, though there’s a terrible lack of options and occasional frustrations that make this a lesser game than it could have been. | |||
| One Btn Bosses | Arcade | B+ | |
tl;drOne Btn Bosses is a one-button mobile-style Arcade game that has players automatically orbiting and attacking “boss rush”-style enemies, with their sole input being a single button that can interact with your movement and attack patterns in different ways. Despite its simple gameplay, there’s surprising depth here, and while this is a challenging game that won’t be for everyone, I think it’s a compelling time-waster that you’ll definitely want to keep coming back to. | |||
| Pac-Man Museum+ | Compilation / Arcade | B+ | |
tl;drPac-Man Museum+ is a Compilation of 14 games from throughout the Pac-Man franchise. This is an extremely uneven collection stuffed full of middling games, missing extremely important and historic games like Ms. Pac-Man, and including a few real stinkers like Pac-Land. This game also includes a simulated arcade as a framing device that unfortunately bogs everything down and forces players to trudge through its bad games to unlock everything. However, despite all of these issues, $20 for a package that includes Pac-Man: Battle Royale, Pac-Man 256, and Pac-Man: Championship Edition is an absolute steal, and you can just view all that other stuff as extra. If only for these three games, this is a must-have package. | |||
| Pang Adventures | Arcade | B+ | |
tl;drPang Adventures is an Arcade-style game in the classic Buster Bros series, where you shoot bubbles while dodging them. The game doesn’t do anything to revolutionize the series, but what’s here is done well. | |||
| Part Time UFO | Arcade | B+ | |
tl;drPart Time UFO is a physics-based Arcade-style game that has players grabbing things with a crane connected to a tiny flying saucer. The gameplay here is simple but surprisingly nuanced, there’s a lot of variety and some surprising depth, and while it’s not a very long experience, its low price still makes it well worth adding to your game library. | |||
| Peglin | Arcade / Roguelike | B+ | |
tl;drPeglin is a game that mixes gameplay clearly inspired by Peggle with Roguelike elements, in the guise of an RPG. The blending of different gameplay elements here is outstanding, though it could do with a tutorial and more balanced level design, and it could stand to be a good deal longer. However, despite these flaws, this is a delightful game that Peggle fans and Roguelike lovers will both want to get their hands on. | |||
| Pix the Cat | Puzzle / Arcade | B+ | |
tl;drPix the Cat is a game with Puzzle and Arcade elements that combines the gameplay of Pac-Man and Snake with a really good presentation and a lot of variety across the game’s four modes. It’s a bit on the difficult side, and I feel like a few additions could have made for a huge improvement, but overall this is an excellent game well worth giving a look. | |||
| Radical Rabbit Stew | Arcade / Puzzle | B+ | |
tl;drRadical Rabbit Stew is a family-friendly top-down Arcade-style game with Puzzle elements where players need to knock rabbits into cooking pot-shaped spaceships. It’s a fun and refreshingly unique game with some great old-school sensibilities, and the competitive multiplayer here is a lot of fun too. Unfortunately, that multiplayer is lacking in content, and the limited use of a stage builder feels like a huge missed opportunity too. This is still overall an excellent game, but it feels like a bit of added content here would have made it an absolute must-have. | |||
| Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania | Compilation / Arcade / Party game | B+ | |
tl;drSuper Monkey Ball Banana Mania is an Arcade-style game that compiles all of the content of Super Monkey Ball 1, 2, and Deluxe into one cohesive package with remastered visuals, a new soundtrack, new features, and all of the great multiplayer Party games that were in the original releases. It doesn’t do anything especially new or transformative, but it does an excellent job of recapturing the magic that made people fall in love with this series in the first place two decades ago. | |||
| Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble | Arcade / 3D Platformer / Party Game | B+ | |
tl;drSuper Monkey Ball Banana Rumble is a fantastic entry in this family-friendly franchise of Arcade-style 3D Platformers about rolling monkeys in balls toward a goal. This release struggles with some performance issues, but its superb level design and excellent multiplayer both online and offline make for an absolutely delightful game well worth getting, and a must-have for fans of the series. | |||
| The Bug Butcher | Arcade | B+ | |
tl;drThe Bug Butcher is an Arcade-style game designed in the style of the classic game Super Buster Bros. The game has good, fast-paced action, good variety in its gameplay, and fun character designs and animation. It’s a shame the levels themselves are so bland, though. | |||
| WarioWare: Get It Together! | Arcade / Party Game | B+ | |
tl;drWarioWare: Get It Together! Is the Nintendo Switch entry in the family-friendly Arcade-style Party game that has players trying to complete over 200 “microgames” played in rapid-fire sequences. This game’s take on the formula has players interacting with the games using the varied cast of characters, and while not as ambitious as some entries in the series, it’s still a wonderfully fun time, especially when playing the game’s multiplayer features (most of which need to be unlocked through play). If you’re looking for a fun game to add to your Party Game rotation, WarioWare: Get It Together is an excellent choice. | |||
| WarioWare: Move It! | Arcade / Party Game | B+ | |
tl;drWarioWare: Move It! Is the second game in Nintendo’s silly family-friendly WarioWare Arcade / Party Game franchise to hit the Nintendo Switch, and this is a much more traditional entry in the series than the first game was. In fact, it was clearly directly inspired by the Wii entry in the franchise, Smooth Moves. While I don’t think it quite measures up to that game, WarioWare: Move It! is still an incredibly creative, enjoyable, uproariously funny, and extremely accessible entry in the franchise, with some solid multiplayer potential. This game doesn’t do anything truly groundbreaking for this series, but fans of the franchise will find it to be an excellent game well worth picking up. | |||
| Void Scrappers | Arcade / Roguelike | B+ | |
tl;drVoid Scrappers is a mix of Arcade-style gameplay with Roguelike mechanics in the “Bullet Heaven” style popularized by Vampire Survivors, with the theme this time being spaceships fighting hordes of enemy ships to collect scrap. To its credit, this game has a similar kind of compelling gameplay to Vampire Survivors that will keep bringing players back for just one more run, and although it has multiple issues that keep it from reaching that other game’s greatness, it’s different enough that it’s still worth getting in its own right. | |||
| W.A.N.D. Project | Arcade / Roguelike | B+ | |
tl;drW.A.N.D. Project is an Arcade-style Roguelike in the “Bullet Heaven” style of game that Vampire Survivors pioneered, but it manages to separate itself from the pack with its gameplay that has you combining spell components on a flowchart-like grid to create your own custom attacks for your alien-fighting magical girl. I wish there were more content and even more ability to customize your character’s abilities, but overall this is an inspired take on the genre that anyone who enjoys this sort of game should absolutely check out. | |||
| ACA NEOGEO Top Hunter Roddy & Cathy | Action-Platformer / Arcade | B | |
tl;drTop Hunter is an Action-Platformer with a focus on the action where players play intergalactic bounty hunters hunting pirates on different planets. This is a fairly unique game with some clever gameplay mechanics, good cartoony action, and solid co-op play. It’s a bit rough in places, but overall this is a fun romp well worth trying out. | |||
| BurgerTime Party! | Arcade / Party Game | B | |
tl;drBurgerTime Party! is a family-friendly reimagining of the classic arcade game that updates the visuals and adds some new stage mechanics, while keeping the core gameplay intact. However, the real joy here are the new multiplayer modes this game adds, that should make this a blast as both a co-op and competitive Party game. Either way, this is a wonderful new take on the original. | |||
| Circa Infinity | Platformer / Arcade | B | |
tl;drCirca Infinity is an Arcade-style Platformer that has players jumping further and further into concentric circles while avoiding enemies. The simple but hypnotic visuals are striking, and the simple but surprisingly varied and clever gameplay is engaging. It’s just a shame that the way the game messes with perspective causes control issues. Still, this is an excellent and unique game that does a lot with a little, and fans of Platformers should definitely give it a try. | |||
| Conduct Together! | Arcade / Simulation | B | |
tl;drConduct Together! is a family-friendly Arcade-style game with Simulation elements that has players using simple controls to manage multiple trains and switches. It’s a fun, challenging task of multitasking with some excellent co-op play baked right into the game design. The game’s controls never quite feel intuitive, and I wish the game expanded on its potential, but overall this is a solid “easy to learn, tough to master”-style game, and one that fans of co-op games should absolutely try. | |||
| Conga Master Party! | Arcade / Party Game | B | |
tl;drConga Master Party is a family-friendly Arcade-style game that has you moving through partygoers trying to attract people to your conga line. Its simple gameplay and fun presentation hides a surprising amount of strategy in its gameplay, as well as a wealth of multiplayer content, including some exclusive to the Switch version. I wish there were a bit more depth, and the game’s random elements can be a bit frustrating, but overall this is a superb game to pick up if you’re looking for something simple and fun, especially if you want to play with a group. | |||
| Cook, Serve, Delicious! 2!! | Arcade / Simulation | B | |
tl;drCook, Serve, Delicious! 2!! is an Arcade-style game with Simulation elements that doesn’t play much like Overcooked or Cooking Mama. It’s more like a food version of Simon Says, with multiple steps for some items. The game does a good job keeping things interesting by having you manage multiple things at once, and it makes for a good co-op experience, although it’s frustrating that it doesn’t do a better job to make important information immediately accessible to players in the chaos. | |||
| Cook, Serve, Delicious! 3?! | Arcade / Simulation | B | |
tl;drCook, Serve, Delicious! 3?! is an Arcade-style game with some Simulation elements that has players managing a food truck and serving orders to customers. In many ways, this is the most streamlined game yet in the series, and while this comes with positive and negative qualities, one unambiguously positive addition is the new “Chill Mode” which lets players take on the game’s challenges at a more relaxed pace. Overall, it’s hard to say whether 2 or 3 is the better game, but I can definitely see this being the better pick for more casual players. | |||
| Cook, Serve, Delicious! 2/3 Bundle!! | Compilation / Arcade / Simulation | B | |
tl;drCook, Serve, Delicious! 2/3 Bundle!! contains the two named games, both entries in the Cook, Serve, Delicious series of Arcade-style games with Simulation elements, and both of these games are quite good, with each having their own individual strengths. The bundle is mostly a good deal too, though sometimes the sale price is actually more than the prices of the individual games. Be sure to compare prices before you buy. | |||
| Dave the Diver | Action-RPG / Arcade / Management Simulation | B | |
tl;drDave the Diver combines Action-RPG sections where players dive into the sea to catch various fish, and Arcade-style Restaurant sections with some Management Simulation elements when you’re serving up those fish to clamoring customers. The gameplay in both sections is good, and both work well together, but each has some flaws that hamper the enjoyment, and the game overall has problems with frequent loading screens and pacing-stopping character conversations. This is still a fun and original game, but these small annoyances do gradually add up. | |||
| Disc Room | Arcade | B | |
tl;drDisc Room is an Arcade-style game that puts players in the role of an astronaut trying to survive for as long as possible in various deathtrap-filled rooms. This game features extremely simple gameplay, yet is still extremely compelling thanks to a good amount of variety and a well-crafted goal structure that gives players good reason to keep revisiting prior rooms. An excellent addition to the Nintendo Switch library. | |||
| Flat Heroes | Platformer / Arcade | B | |
tl;drFlat Heroes is a challenging Platformer with a simple presentation that has you playing as a square dodging the attacks of various geometric shape enemies. While the presentation could have made a few elements of the game clearer, and the game doesn’t do anything particularly new or revolutionary, overall this is a solid entry in the genre well worth a look. | |||
| Geometry Survivor | Arcade / Roguelike | B | |
tl;drGeometry Survivor is an Arcade-style game and Roguelike clearly trying to copy the success of Vampire Survivors, but also copying the art style and gameplay mechanics of the Geometry Wars franchise. The result is a game that, while not quite on par with either of those inspirations, is nevertheless unique and enjoyable enough to be worth playing in its own right. | |||
| Hammerwatch | Top-Down Arcade / Action-RPG / 2-Stick Shooter | B | |
tl;drHammerwatch is a co-op Top-Down Arcade-style Action-RPG with Two-Stick Shooter mechanics that’s reminiscent of the classic game Gauntlet. It’s simple and can be a bit repetitive, but if you’re looking for something straightforward to play with friends, this is a pretty solid entry in its genre. | |||
| Invisigun Reloaded | Top-Down Action / Arcade / Stealth | B | |
tl;drInvisigun Reloaded is a Top-Down Action game where players are all invisible until they do something to give themselves away. The fact that you can’t see your own character unless you slip up may not appeal to everyone, but those who don’t mind this annoying side-effect of the premise will find this game to be a superb competitive action game. | |||
| Iron Crypticle | 2-Stick Shooter / Arcade | B | |
tl;drIron Crypticle is an Arcade-style a 2-Stick Shooter that plays like Smash TV with a Ghosts ‘N Goblins aesthetic. It’s a game with good, arcadey action that works well in co-op, though it’s not without its issues here and there. | |||
| Jet Set Knights | Arcade / Action-Platformer | B | |
tl;drJet Set Knights is an Arcade-style Action-Platformer where players fight hordes of monsters to keep them from getting to a princess. The gameplay here is generally pretty good, but it doesn’t quite reach the same level as similar games like Towerfall, especially with somewhat poor level design, and minor Tower Defense elements that are promising but never properly developed. This is still an enjoyable game, especially in multiplayer, and those who enjoyed Towerfall but want to play something slightly different may find this game worth a look. | |||
| Laser Kitty Pow Pow | Arcade | B | |
tl;drLaser Kitty Pow Pow is an Arcade-style game where one or two players play as giant cats on clouds shooting armies using laser eyes. It’s silly, fast and frenetic, and surprisingly fun. For the tiny price tag, this is a surprisingly good simple game. | |||
| Light-It Up | Arcade / Platformer | B | |
tl;drLight-It Up is an Arcade-style Platformer controlled with only two buttons – one to jump left and one to jump right. Yet despite this simplicity, or perhaps because of it, this game is a surprisingly decent and challenging entry in the genre, and for only $5 it’s definitely worth trying out. | |||
| Once Upon a Katamari | Arcade | B | |
tl;drOnce Upon a Katamari brings to the arcade-style ball-rolling series a new time-traveling theme and new gameplay mechanics, but a lot of these new mechanics are poorly-conceived or a mixed bag. This is still an enjoyable game in a consistently enjoyable series, but it’s far from the greatness of the first two Katamari games. | |||
| Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus | Arcade | B | |
tl;drPac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus is a decent follow-up to the original Pac-Man Championship Edition, itself a re-imagining of the arcade classic Pac-Man. However, this time around things just feel more cluttered and the game loses the elegant simplicity of the first Championship Edition. However, it’s still fun to play, especially in the new Switch-Exclusive 2P mode, which offers some excellent co-op. Overall, players looking for a decent modern evolution of the classic Pac-Man formula should be mostly pleased with this. | |||
| Railways | Arcade | B | |
tl;drRailways is an Arcade-style game where players re-route trains to pick up passengers on different tracks while avoiding collisions. It’s not a particularly original game, but it has a clean, appealing presentation, it’s well-polished, and both the gamepad and touchscreen controls work quite well. There are some missing features I wish the game had, but for only $5, this is a solid time-waster well worth trying out. | |||
| Rubber Bandits | Top-Down Arcade / Party Game | B | |
tl;drRubber Bandits is a family-friendly Top-Down Arcade / Party Game that has players fighting one another as goofy bandits with rubbery appendages. The sloppy gameplay is both good and bad, but the excellent variety in levels and game modes make this a great game to bring out at parties. Just don’t expect to get the same experience from the game’s online play. | |||
| Sea King | Arcade / Party Game | B | |
tl;drSea King is an Arcade-style Party Game where players pilot ships trying to blast each other away with canon fire. While it’s not especially deep and the pirate-y announcer can be a bit overbearing, the visuals are excellent, the gameplay is good and there’s a healthy variety of game modes. For $5, this is a game well worth adding to your Party Game lineup. | |||
| Super Metboy | Arcade | B | |
tl;drSuper Metboy is a family-friendly Arcade-style game where players control ball-like characters who use the same button to float, melee attack, and use ranged attacks. This makes for some fun, lighthearted gameplay, and some excellent local co-op, and though I wish the game’s minor Roguelite elements were more pronounced, and I wish the melee attacks were less risky to use, overall this I found this to be a delightful game, if a tad shallow. | |||
| Vinebound: Tangled Together | Arcade / Roguelike | B | |
tl;drVinebound is a family-friendly Arcade-style Roguelike in roughly the same style as Vampire Survivors, but with a focus on co-op play. These co-op elements are well-crafted and really help to set the game apart from others in the genre, and while I do think the game is a tad content-poor and the single-player gameplay seems like an afterthought, this is well worth getting for players looking for a solid co-op experience, especially with this game only setting you back $5. | |||
| Zombie Panic in Wonderland DX | Arcade / Shooting Gallery | B | |
tl;drZombie Panic in Wonderland DX is an Arcade-Style Shooting Gallery game that has players blasting away silly anime-style zombies. This game doesn’t take itself seriously at all, and that’s just fine, because its silly presentation is one of its best qualities, and fits the fast-paced action well. While there are still some places this game could do with improvement, overall it’s an excellent co-op Action game well worth playing. | |||
| ACA NEOGEO Crossed Swords | Arcade / Action | B- | |
tl;drCrossed Swords is an Arcade-style Action game that has players using a sword and shield to fight enemies with gameplay vaguely similar to the Punch-Out!! franchise. It’s a unique approach, and it’s done well here, but this game’s challenge level is still exceptionally high in a way that may put off most players. If that doesn’t make you wary, I’d say this game is well worth a look. | |||
| ACA NEOGEO Nam-1975 | Arcade / Shooting Gallery | B- | |
tl;drNam-1975 is an Arcade-style Shooting Gallery game set in a fictionalized Vietnam War, where players aim a reticule while having their character at the bottom of the screen dodge incoming enemy fire. This game is absurdly difficult and will force players to use the unlimited continues the ACA NEOGEO release offers, but if you can stomach that I think you’ll fid this to be a solid Action game. | |||
| Airport | Arcade | B- | |
tl;drAirport is an Arcade-style game that has players directing the flow of car traffic in and near airports. While the title may be a bit misleading, this game nevertheless delivers some simple but deceptively challenging gameplay, excellent co-op, and an appealing presentation. If you’re looking for a simple but fun Arcade-style challenge with good co-op, this game is well worth checking out. | |||
| Annalynn | Platformer / Arcade | B- | |
tl;drAnnalynn is an Arcade-style Platformer about a miner grabbing up gold while fleeing hostile snakes that pulls gameplay elements from Pac-Man, City Connection, and Donkey Kong Jr. , to name a few. It’s a solid tribute to classics of the genre, though like the games it imitates it can be a bit simple and repetitive. | |||
| Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection | Compilation / Shmup | B- | |
tl;drArcade Classics Anniversary Collection is a collection of mostly Shmups that includes eight games that are mostly pretty good (and also mostly punishingly difficult). This collection gives players a wealth of options and bonus content, and on the whole this is a solid collection of games for Shmup fans. | |||
| Asteroids: Recharged | Arcade / 2D Space Shooter | B- | |
tl;drAsteroids: Recharged is an Arcade-style 2D Space Shooter inspired by the Atari classic. This version improves the presentation, makes progression more fluid, and adds temporary power-ups, but otherwise leaves the original formula largely intact. The result is a game that’s a tad too repetitive for long play sessions, but that makes for a fun time-waster. | |||
| Barbarous: Tavern of Emyr | Arcade | B- | |
tl;drBarbarous: tavern of Emyr is an Arcade-style food service game where players piece together customer orders in a medieval fantasy setting. The game has a great amount of personality to it, a good co-op mode, and great touchscreen controls, although you can’t really do both of those at the same time. On the whole, this is a solid entry in the genre. | |||
| Blow It Up | Arcade | B- | |
tl;drBlow It Up is a family-friendly Arcade-style game that is clearly patterned after Angry Birds, but it does a good job with that formula, with plenty of voxel-based destruction to keep things visually-interesting. At only $5, I think this is absolutely worth picking up for fans of Angry Birds, or just players who crave a fun and lighthearted destruction-focused Arcade-style game. | |||
| Bonkies | Arcade | B- | |
tl;drBonkies is a physics-based Arcade-style game that has players working as monkey astronauts to construct shapes out of various blocks they’re given. The controls here has a few frustrating issues weighing the game down, but overall this is a solid game with great co-op. | |||
| Centipede: Recharged | Arcade | B- | |
tl;drCentipede: Recharged is an Arcade-style game inspired by the Atari classic. This version “improves” the presentation, makes progression more fluid, and adds temporary power-ups, but otherwise leaves the original formula largely intact. The result is a surprisingly compelling reimagining of the classic, albeit one with a presentation that lacks all of the charm and personality the original game had. | |||
| Contra Anniversary Collection | Compilation / Action-Platformer | B- | |
tl;drContra Anniversary Collection is a collection of super-difficult Action-Platformers that includes ten great games from early in the series (well, if we’re honest, it’s more like five games, given that they’re including multiple versions of the same games as different entries). These games are absurdly unforgiving, but they’re still solid classics, and there’s a good amount of bonus content here as well. This collection is worth a look. | |||
| Cook, Serve, Delicious! | Arcade / Simulation | B- | |
tl;drCook, Serve, Delicious! is an Arcade-style game with some Simulation elements that has players managing a restaurant and serving orders to customers. I think this is a more frantic game than its sequel, and it has a lot less in the way of variety, but it’s still an enjoyable game that’s worth a look. | |||
| Cook, Serve, Delicious! 1/2 Bundle!! | Compilation / Arcade / Simulation | B- | |
tl;drCook, Serve, Delicious! 1/2 Bundle! contains the first two games in the Cook, Serve, Delicious series of Arcade-style games with Simulation elements, and both of these games are quite good. The bundle, on the other hand, is of dubious value, and you’ll want to compare the price of this bundle to the price of getting each game on its own. You might just find it less expensive to do the latter. | |||
| Cook, Serve, Delicious, Trilogy! | Compilation / Arcade / Simulation | B- | |
tl;drCook, Serve, Delicious, Trilogy! contains the first three games in the Cook, Serve, Delicious series of Arcade-style games with Simulation elements, and all three of these games are quite good. The bundle, on the other hand, is only a good deal if you don’t bother waiting for sales, because its sale price is more than the individual cost of the games when they’re on sale. In other words, if you really want to save money, you’re better off getting the individual games when they go on sale. | |||
| Don’t Die, Mr Robot! DX | Bullet Hell Shmup / Arcade | B- | |
tl;drDon’t Die, Mr Robot! DX is an Arcade-Style Shmup where you’re dodging enemies and collecting pickups to set off explosions in your wake. Think Geometry Wars’ Pacifism mode. The presentation is horrendous, but the gameplay is strangely compelling and there are enough features here to keep fans of Shmups coming back. | |||
| Donut Dodo | Platformer / Arcade | B- | |
tl;drDonut Dodo succeeds at doing exactly what it aims for – being a fun but challenging retro Arcade-style Platformer in the vein of the original Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. infused with more modern sensibilities. This game’s short length and high challenge mean not everyone will appreciate it, but for only $5 this is a solid pickup for anyone with a fondness for those classic Arcade games. | |||
| Dungeons and Ducklings | Arcade | B- | |
tl;drDungeons and Ducklings is a family-friendly Arcade-style game that has players taking the role of a mother duck dodging enemies and traps in a seemingly-endless maze, with gameplay that seems directly inspired by Pac-Man 256. It’s not quite as good as that game, but Dungeons and Ducklings is still an enjoyable retro-style top-down Arcade-style game worth a look for fans of the genre. | |||
| Fall Guys | Arcade / 3D Platformer | B- | |
tl;drFall Guys is a free-to-play online-focused multiplayer game that has players competing in a variety of different competitions with up to 59 other players. While there’s a decent variety in the gameplay, and some fun to be had doing so, the sluggish controls feel limiting, and the technical compromises made in the Nintendo Switch version really feel like they hurt the game. There’s still some fun to be had here, and the price is right, but this definitely feels like a game that’s better on other platforms. | |||
| Gigapocalypse | Arcade | B- | |
tl;drGigapocalypse is an Arcade-style game with RPG elements, Roguelike elements, and Virtual Pet elements, with players guiding the growth of a kaiju-style monster and then choosing its targets once it sets out on its path of destruction. The gamepad controls here leave something to be desired, though thankfully the optional touchscreen controls are far better. However, no matter which controls you use, the gameplay is still a bit too simple and repetitive. Despite this, Gigapocalypse is still an enjoyable game that kaiju fans would do well to check out. | |||
| Good Pizza, Great Pizza | Arcade | B- | |
tl;drGood Pizza, Great Pizza is an Arcade-style game that has you making pizzas to order and managing your restaurant. The presentation here is nice, and the gameplay is good, but without touchscreen controls, this version is inferior to the one you can get for free (with ads) on your smartphone. | |||
| Hole io | Arcade | B- | |
tl;drHole io is a family-friendly Arcade-style game where players move a hole around to swallow up objects to grow its size, aiming to get it as big as possible. The core gameplay is pulled straight out of the game Donut County, and there are countless poor design choices and gameplay flaws here. Yet despite all of that, it’s hard to deny how fun and compelling this game is, and for only $5, this is a superb time-waster. | |||
| Hole io & Paper io 2 | Compilation / Arcade | B- | |
tl;drHole io & Paper io 2 includes the two named games, both family-friendly Arcade-style games. These two games aren’t perfect, but they’re still plenty of fun in spite of their flaws, and this bundle is a decent deal on the price of this pair, making it well worth getting. | |||
| Inversus Deluxe | Arcade / Shmup | B- | |
tl;drInversus Deluxe is an Arcade-style game with Shmup elements where the shots you and opponents fire also limit the area you can move freely in. It’s an interesting concept, but a limited number of shots players can fire before reload really mucks with the otherwise fast-paced battles. | |||
| Lichtspeer: Double Speer Edition | Arcade | B- | |
tl;drLichtspeer is an Arcade-style game that has players throwing laser spears at an odd assortment of enemies in an 80s retro-futuristic Norse-themed setting. It’s a bit simple and repetitive, but the unique presentation and fun gameplay should make it a fun distraction at least. | |||
| MageQuit | Arcade / Party | B- | |
tl;drMageQuit is an arena-based Arcade-style Party Game where players take the role of wizards blasting each other with spells in an enclosed arena. There are some frustrating design and technical issues here, unimpressive visuals, and some hideously bad slowdown on Nintendo Switch. Yet despite these issues, MageQuit is still a delight to play, and Party Game fans looking for another game to throw down in should definitely consider this one, though you may be off getting this game on another platform if you can. | |||
| Moving Out | Arcade / Party Game | B- | |
tl;drMoving Out is an Overcooked-style Party game that has up to four players coordinate to move furniture from a house to a moving van. It’s got a great concept and an excellent presentation, but the game’s controls and physics often make for a game that doesn’t seem to respond properly to your inputs, which can interrupt the fun with frustration. It’s still worth a look, but don’t expect a game anywhere near as fun as Overcooked. | |||
| Namco Museum Arcade Pac | Compilation / Arcade / Various | B- | |
tl;drNamco Museum Arcade Pac is a physical release that includes the Nintendo Switch version of Namco Museum as well as Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus. This is still an uneven and incomplete collection, but adding these two releases together makes this package an overall much better value, and fans of Namco’s classic arcade games should be happy with it. | |||
| Otto | Arcade | B- | |
tl;drOtto has you using either motion controls or the touchscreen to tug on a rope holding Otto to maneuver him through levels. The gimmicky controls actually work pretty well, but the levels are overly simple and repetitive. It’s still a decent distraction that’s fairly unique, just don’t expect much depth or variety. | |||
| Paper io 2 | Arcade | B- | |
tl;drPaper io 2 is an Arcade-style game where players draw lines to expand their territory while trying to avoid other players touching their line before it’s completed. The simple gameplay is surprisingly compelling, and there’s a lot of good multiplayer potential here. It’s a shame this game doesn’t have more options or game modes, but with a $5 price tag, this makes for an easy game to pick up for anyone looking for a fun time-waster. | |||
| Rock of Ages II: Bigger and Boulder | Tower Defense / Arcade | B- | |
tl;drRock of Ages II combines the Tower Defense genre with an Arcade-y ball-rolling game into a unique, wonderful, silly formula that’s a blast to play. Unfortunately, the Switch version of the game is missing local multiplayer and looks terrible in handheld mode. This is a middling port of an otherwise very good game. | |||
| Scrap Divers | Arcade | B- | |
tl;drScrap Divers is a family-friendly Arcade-style game that has players maneuvering a robot down a vertical mine shaft, trying to avoid obstacles. It’s a simple and repetitive game, but still manages to be enjoyable thanks to the variety in the environments and unlockables. This isn’t a game you’ll be likely to play for more than a few minutes at a time, but as a $5 time-waster, it’s pretty entertaining for those few minutes. | |||
| Servonauts | Arcade / Party Game | B- | |
tl;drServonauts, is a co-op-focused Arcade-style Party Game vaguely similar to Overcooked, where players are robots trying to get the right kind of gas to vehicles in a gas station by connecting hoses to various machines. The core concept here is great, making for some really good co-op play. Unfortunately, this is undermined somewhat by imprecise controls at times. However, even with these issues, co-op fans may still want to give this one a look. | |||
| Snake vs Snake | Arcade / Party Game | B- | |
tl;drSnake vs Snake is an Arcade-style Party game that takes the classic gameplay of Snake and places a focus on multiplayer play. It absolutely has its flaws, and it’s not doing anything that truly revolutionizes the old-as-dirt gameplay, but its varied game modes and support for up to six players makes it a nice addition to your Party game rotation. | |||
| Solar Blast | Arcade | B- | |
tl;drSolar Blast is a family-friendly Arcade-style game where players use a shield to protect a sun from incoming projectiles. The simple one-stick gameplay actually manages to have some surprising nuance. It’s a shame this game passed up numerous opportunities to build on its solid core gameplay to become something greater, but for the low $5 price tag, what’s here is still pretty good and worth a look. | |||
| Sqroma | Puzzle / Arcade | B- | |
tl;drSqroma is a Puzzle game with Arcade-style elements that has you navigating a square to an exit point while avoiding turret fire and other hazards. While the core premise is simple, Sqroma adds some really clever mechanics and some phenomenal level design that make this a surprisingly excellent puzzle game – surprising because the presentation is extremely unimpressive in a way that makes the $9 price tag seem a bit steep. Still, if you can look past the unimpressive visuals and music, I think you’ll find this to be a wonderful Puzzle game. | |||
| Stacks on Stacks (On Stacks) | Arcade / Puzzle | B- | |
tl;drStacks on Stacks (On Stacks) takes a simple family-friendly Arcade-style Puzzle premise of stacking various blocks without any of them falling off-stage, loses some points for its poor presentation and lacking controls… but gains back a lot of points due to its sheer variety and creativity. This game certainly has its flaws, but it nevertheless manages to be a thoroughly entertaining experience despite these flaws. | |||
| Super Bomberman R Online | Arcade | B- | |
tl;drSuper Bomberman R Online, while still an Arcade-style game with the same basic mechanics as most games in the series, manages to have a really inventive approach to the classic series formula, turning it into a 64-player online Battle Royale-style game. And while the lack of local multiplayer is disappointing, and the frequent loading screens are a major annoyance, the free price tag makes this game a no-brainer. Definitely give it a try. | |||
| Super Fowlst 2 | Arcade | B- | |
tl;drSuper Fowlst 2 is an Arcade-style game where player play as a bird trying to bash into enemies in enclosed areas. Trying to wrangle the controls bounces between fun and frustrating, but overall this is an enjoyably frenetic experience with a lot of personality and variety. | |||
| Sushi Time! | Arcade | B- | |
tl;drSushi Time! is an Arcade-style game that has players taking orders and prepping food before customers lose patience. This is mostly a pretty typical “restaurant tycoon”-style game (without Simulation elements) though it does have a nice sushi boat mechanic that adds a layer of strategy and planning to the gameplay. It doesn’t have much in the way of variety or options, but it’s still worth a look due to its enjoyable gameplay and low $5 price point. | |||
| Sweet Witches | Puzzle-Platformer / Arcade | B- | |
tl;drSweet Witches is an Arcade-y Puzzle-Platformer in the same vein as Lode Runner and Burgertime, where you’re trying to plant flowers throughout the entire level while avoiding enemies. It’s a solid game with some good multiplayer co-op and competitive options, but it could have used a bit more work getting the sound in line with the energy the rest of the game has. | |||
| Treadnauts | Arcade / Action-Platformer | B- | |
tl;drTreadnauts is a multiplayer-focused arena-based Arcade-style Action-Platformer with players using wall-crawling tanks to try to take each other out. This game uses some fun but challenging physics to assist in your movement, and these make this a game that will be somewhat challenging for less-skilled players to master. It’s also lacking online play and any sort of significant single-player mode. However, if you’re looking to add a game to your Party Game rotation, this is a solid choice. | |||
| Xposed Switched | Arcade | B- | |
tl;drXposed Switched is an Arcade-style game in the same style as Qix, with players using a cursor to draw lines across a board to fill in completed spaces while evading enemies. There are some issues with inconsistent presentation and some control issues, but this game’s wonderful variety helps to make this a really enjoyable game despite these flaws. | |||
| Arcade Archives Libble Rabble | Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drLibble Rabble is an Arcade-style game where players control two cursors, using a rope stretching between them to surround enemies. It’s an interesting concept, but one that seems like it requires the player divide their attention too many ways… unless they split the Joy-Cons to share with a friend. If you do this, you may be looking at a unique co-op experience. Otherwise, I think you may be in for a frustrating single-player game. | |||
| Arcade Archives Vs. Wrecking Crew | Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drVs. Wrecking Crew is an Arcade-style game that is distinctly different from the Nintendo Entertainment System release, and it’s surprisingly fun, especially in multiplayer. It’s overpriced, and can be a bit repetitive, but this game is so rarely seen on consoles that I would say that the $8 price tag is still worth it. | |||
| Atari Flashback Classics | Compilation / Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drAtari Flashback Classics is a Compilation of 150 Atari games dating back over 50 years, with classic Arcade, Atari 2600, and Atari 5200 games. Most of these games are complete garbage and not worth playing, but a select few have managed to withstand the test of time. If only for these true classics, this is a Compilation that retro gamers will want to try. | |||
| Badland: Game of the Year Edition | Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drBadland is an Arcade-style game that has players flying a birdlike creature (or possibly a flock of them) through an obstacle course-style level to an exit. It’s not especially deep or original, and it can be a bit repetitive, but it’s still enjoyable enough to keep you entertained for a short while in between other bigger games. | |||
| Battery Jam | Arcade / Party Game | C+ | |
tl;drBattery Jam is an arena-based Arcade-style Party Game where players are trying to cover the arena with their own color by taking out enemy players via mostly indirect means. This game is fun, but it’s overly-complicated and sorely lacking in options and features. If you can learn its ins and outs you’ll probably enjoy it, but it definitely feels like an acquired taste. | |||
| Bit.Trip Beat | Arcade / Music-Rhythm | C+ | |
tl;drBit.Trip Beat is an Arcade-style game that combines elements of Pong, Music-Rhythm games, and motion control. It’s this last element that will make this a game that not everyone will enjoy, as these controls take some getting used to. However, if you can get used to these controls, you may find elements to this game that make it worthwhile. | |||
| Bit.Trip Flux | Arcade / Music-Rhythm | C+ | |
tl;drA direct follow-up to Bit.Trip Beat, Bit.Trip Flux has some of the same good and bad qualities. It is an Arcade-style game that combines elements of Pong, Music-Rhythm games, and motion control. It’s this last element that will make this a game that not everyone will enjoy, as these controls take some getting used to. However, if you can get used to these controls, you may find elements to this game that make it worthwhile. | |||
| Breakfast Bar Tycoon | Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drBreakfast Bar Tycoon is an Arcade-style game that has players taking orders and prepping food before customers lose patience. This is a pretty typical “restaurant tycoon”-style game (without Simulation elements) that does this genre well enough, but doesn’t have much in the way of variety or options. | |||
| Burger Chef Tycoon | Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drBurger Chef Tycoon is an Arcade-style game that doesn’t play much like Overcooked or Cooking Mama. It’s more like a food version of Simon Says, where players respond to orders by selecting the correct ingredients. The gameplay is decent, but this game lacks the variety and options of Cook, Serve, Delicious! 2!! If you’re looking for an Arcade-style food prep game, I recommend you get that one instead. | |||
| Cash Cow DX | Platformer / Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drCash Cow DX is a retro-style Arcade-style Platformer where players taking the role of a cow trying to reclaim moooney taken from him by a gang of pigs. This game has some wonderful old-school charm, but it also has an old-school challenge level, which is to say this is so challenging it’s not going to be a game that will appeal to everyone, particularly those attracted by the game’s cute presentation. | |||
| Caverns of Mars: Recharged | Arcade / Roguelike | C+ | |
tl;drCaverns of Mars: Recharged is an Arcade-style game with Roguelike elements inspired by the classic Atari PC game, though it takes multiple liberties with the gameplay in this successor. Many of these changes are great, and the risk-reward of trying to avoid taking damage while being mindful of dwindling fuel is excellent. It’s a shame that this strong gameplay is marred by a Roguelike mechanic that punishes you more than it helps you. As a result, this game is merely a decent game that seems like it could have been much better. | |||
| Chop | Action-Platformer / Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drChop is an arena-based Action-Platformer that has up to four muscular characters in a bloody battle to the death. While this has its moments of fun, the game has far too many problems getting in the way, from awkward controls to poor design choices. Ultimately, it’s a game that had promise, but not one you’ll likely want to buy. | |||
| Chickenoidz Super Party | Party Game / Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drChickenoidz Super Party is a family-friendly top-down Arcade-style arena-based Party Game. The action here is fun but a bit too frenetic, with balancing issues and pacing issues with weapons that constantly run dry and giant power-ups that seem to go on far too long. There’s still multiplayer fun to be had here, but you have better options for that on Nintendo Switch. | |||
| Circle of Sumo: Online Rumble! | Arcade / Party Game | C+ | |
tl;drCircle of Sumo: Online Rumble is a free-to-play online version of 2018’s Circle of Sumo. It’s a decent competitive Party Game, but the simplicity of the gameplay, lack of built-in local multiplayer, and heavy-handed monetization make it a game you’re not likely to play too long before moving on. | |||
| Collidalot | Arcade / Party Game | C+ | |
tl;drCollidalot is a game that has players competing to bump each other off of rails in an arena. It’s a really original concept for a game, but unfortunately I felt that the game’s fast-paced nature and frustrating controls kept it from really resonating with me. | |||
| Cooking Tycoons 3-in-1 Bundle | Compilation / Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drCooking Tycoons 3-in-1 Bundle is a Compilation of three Arcade-style restaurant-themed games where players rush to fill the correct orders. It’s decent, but Cook, Serve, Delicious! 2!! offers more depth and variety in one game than all three of these combined, and at the same price. | |||
| Cooking Tycoons 2 – 3 in 1 Bundle | Compilation / Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drCooking Tycoons 2 – 3 in 1 Bundle contains three Arcade-style games in the “restaurant tycoon” style (without Simulation elements). All three games are decent but mostly not great, but that’s made up for somewhat by this package being a pretty good value. Unfortunately for this package, Cooking Arena – 10 in 1 Edition offers a much better value, and if you want the games in this bundle you’re better off getting that bundle instead. | |||
| Demolition Inc HD | Arcade / Puzzle | C+ | |
tl;drDemolition Inc blends Arcade and Puzzle elements, with players flying a UFO and dropping hazards to create as much destruction as possible. Unfortunately, the game’s rigid goals and focus on its more limited Puzzle elements really makes it hard to enjoy the delightful destruction that is this game’s best quality. This game still has some great chaotic fun, but it forces you to work to get to it. | |||
| Doggie Ninja: The Golden Mission | Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drDoggie Ninja is an Arcadey multiplayer game where players break blocks to get gold while avoiding falling floors. it’s some decent fun mayhem if you have multiple players, but the game is severely lacking in content and options, and as a result this won’t be likely to keep you entertained for long before you move on. | |||
| Dragon Snakes | Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drDragon Snakes is an Arcade-style game that plays much like the classic games Snake and Tron. It has a good presentation and plays well enough, but it’s lacking features and the game’s design can make it difficult to judge if you’re too close to an obstacle. It’s okay, but there’s definitely room for improvement. | |||
| Dustoff Z | Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drDustoff Z is an Arcade-style game that has players flying a helicopter through boxy-looking zombie-infested levels trying to complete various missions. The game is simple and not very impressive-looking, and the lack of control over your gunners is frustrating, but the game offers a good amount of variety and charm too. | |||
| Food Truck Tycoon | Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drFood Truck Tycoon is an Arcade-style game that doesn’t play much like Overcooked or Cooking Mama. | |||
| Food Truck Tycoon – Asian Cuisine | Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drFood Truck Tycoon – Asian Cuisine is an Arcade-style game that has players taking orders and prepping food before customers lose patience. This is a pretty typical “restaurant tycoon”-style game (without Simulation elements) that does this genre well enough, but doesn’t have much in the way of variety or options. | |||
| Heisting | Arcade / Stealth | C+ | |
tl;drHeisting is an Arcade-style game with Stealth elements where players lead a crew breaking into places, taking out guards, and looting, then upgrading their crew. This game’s simple and varied take on the topic matter has some good things going for it, but the grinding-focused experience built around the mobile version’s microtransactions makes this a shallow and repetitive experience, only good as a time-waster. | |||
| High Noon Revolver | Action-Platformer / Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drHigh Noon Revolver is an Arcade-style Action-Platformer with Auto-Runner and Roguelike elements and a Wild West theme. The characters and their firing rate are both sluggish, and so too is the frequency with which you unlock new characters. However, for a mere $3, this is worth a look if the premise sounds interesting to you. | |||
| HoPiKo | Arcade / Platformer | C+ | |
tl;drHoPiKo is an Arcade-style game with Platforming elements, where you are jumping directly from platform to platform within line of sight. The core gameplay here is fun, but the game is made frustrating and tedious by penalizing players’ mistakes by tossing them back multiple levels. Patient players may enjoy this, but everyone else is better off avoiding it. | |||
| Hungry Shark World | Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drHungry Shark World is an Arcade-style game where you’re stalking underwater environments as a shark who must constantly be looking for more food. It’s a game that’s fun on the surface, but doesn’t have enough depth to keep it going, in part thanks to its arcadey bits hindering the exploration bits. | |||
| Hyper Gunsport | Arcade / Sports (Misc.) | C+ | |
tl;drHyper Gunsport is an Arcade-style game with strong Sports elements that has players in 2v2 matches in a futuristic sport like tennis or volleyball where players hit the ball back and forth by shooting the ball with guns. It’s a fun premise, and the futuristic presentation is great, but the gameplay mechanics leave something to be desired. | |||
| King of the Hat | Action-Platformer / Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drKing of the Hat is a family-friendly Arcade-style arena-based multiplayer-focused Action-Platformer where up to four players facing off with hat-wearing characters whose hats are both a weapon but also their greatest weakness. While this idea is clever, and the core gameplay is decent, there’s not a whole lot more going on here. And while players looking to throw down in multiplayer will likely enjoy this, there’s a wealth of better games on Nintendo Switch that are more deserving of your attention. | |||
| Monster Bugs Eat People | Arcade / Party Game | C+ | |
tl;drMonster Bugs Eat People is an Arcade-style Party game where you play as giant segmented worms eating different parts of the environment, as well as each other. The game has a terrible lack of content and options, and the presentation is pretty bad as well, but there’s some surprising nuance in the gameplay, and for $2 this can be a fun little Party game that’s worth the price tag. | |||
| Murtop | Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drMurtop is an Arcade-style game where players take the role of a bomb-pooping bunny, with gameplay that plays like a cross between Dig Dug and Bomberman. The game mechanics here seem a little too unforgiving, but otherwise this is a decent retro-style game that does a good job meshing together its two sources of inspiration. | |||
| Nature | Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drNature is a single-button Arcade-style game where players control a floating dandelion seed and try to bring it into contact with as many elements of nature as possible. It’s a pleasant and relaxing experience, but also a shallow one where your success is usually less dependent on your skill and more on luck. The result is a decent time-waster, but not a game you’ll be playing for long. | |||
| Of Tanks and Demons III | Top-Down Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drOf Tanks and Demons III is an Arcade-style game that could be described as “Pac-Man with Tanks”, but it’s actually surprisingly more original than that. It has an absolutely terrible presentation and it suffers from a few gameplay issues, but overall this is a clever take on an old genre, and fans of Arcade-style games who can forgive its flaws may find it worth giving a try. | |||
| Pac-Man 99 | Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drPac-Man 99 is a version of Pac-Man that re-imagines the Arcade classic as a battle royale-style game much in the same way that Tetris 99 and Super Mario Bros. 35 did, borrowing elements from the Pac-Man Championship Edition series as well as introducing a few of its own. Unfortunately, the controls feel a bit loose, and the mechanics are obscured from the player. You will die a lot in this game and not even know what you could have done differently, which is pretty frustrating. Still, if you subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online, the core online competitive mode here is free, so you may as well give it a try – it does have its fun moments, in-between the frustration. | |||
| Paper Wars: Cannon Fodder | Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drPaper Wars is an Arcade-style game in the vein of Missile Command that has you firing volleys of tank fire at oncoming hordes of soldiers, with everything represented by scribbles on scraps of paper. This game succeeds in making the fending off of enemies viscerally fun, but Paper Wars lacks the depth to be much more than a time-waster. | |||
| Paperbound Brawlers | Arcade / Action-Platformer / Party Game | C+ | |
tl;drPaperbound Brawlers is a multiplayer-focused arena-based Arcade-style Action-Platformer and Party game where players attack each other while shifting gravity to move around the arena. There’s some fun and original gameplay here, but it feels rough and lacks some polish that could have greatly improved it. Overall it’s a worthwhile entry into its genre, but one with a lot of room for improvement. | |||
| Peace, Death! 2 | Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drPeace, Death! 2, like the first game, is an Arcade-style game where players must decide whether the people they’re sorting are headed for heaven or hell. The gameplay here is simple, but becomes more complex over time as you get a growing list of criteria. The changes made to the gameplay this time around do make for a marked improvement over the first game, though it’s still a somewhat shallow experience that’s not especially compelling beyond short play sessions. | |||
| Ping Redux | Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drPing Redux is an Arcade-style game where players aim a block to try to get it to rebound into a goal with as few bounces as possible. The game’s presentation is a good mix of new and old, but the game lacks polish, and winning a level often feels down to luck more than skill. Still, for a light inexpensive time-waster, this game may be worth a look. | |||
| Pirate Pop Plus | Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drPirate Pop Plus is a Buster Bros/Pang-style Arcade game with a retro Game Boy-style presentation. It’s simple and repetitive, but a fun distraction for a little while. | |||
| Pushy and Pully in Blockland | Top-Down Arcade / Puzzle | C+ | |
tl;drPushy and Pully is a Top-Down Arcade-style game with Puzzle elements that’s reminiscent of genre classics like the Lolo games and Kickle Cubicle. The presentation here is excellent, the co-op play is wonderful, and the core mechanics are sound, though some stiff gameplay and a lack of options mar the experience. Overall, this is a decent entry in the genre worth checking out. | |||
| Rubix Roller | Puzzle / Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drRubix Roller is a game with Puzzle and Arcade elements that has you rolling a Rubix Cube along a grid of colored tiles, trying not to move your cube on the wrong color. While it has some frustrations, it’s a decent game for its low $4 price, and its 2-player competitive mode is a nice inclusion. If the premise of this game interests you, I’d say it’s worth a try. | |||
| S.N.I.P.E.R. Hunter Scope | Arcade / On-Rails First-Person Shooter / Third-Person Shooter | C+ | |
tl;drS.N.I.P.E.R. Hunter Scope is a game that looks to bring back the glory days of arcade light gun games like Silent Scope and Time Crisis, and while it does about as good a job at this as one could expect, suffice it to say that the Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Cons aren’t ideal for this sort of motion control, and no matter which of the game’s control options you choose, they all seem to have problems. If you don’t mind wrestling with the controls, you may still find some arcadey enjoyment to be had here, but most will likely find this too frustrating to bother with. | |||
| Sausage Wars | Arcade / Party Game | C+ | |
tl;drSausage Wars is an Arcade-style Party game where players take the role of anthropomorphic sausages trying to whack each other off the stage or into hazards. There’s some good visceral fun to be had here, but the gameplay is too repetitive and has far too many issues to make this last long before your party wants to move on to other things. | |||
| Sheep Patrol | Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drSheep Patrol is an Arcade-style game that’s a bit similar to golf or pool, with players aiming a dog at a flock of sheep to corral them at each level’s end point. The graphics and sound here are terrible, but the gameplay is fun and unique enough to make it worth trying, especially for the low price of $2. | |||
| SNK 40th Anniversary Collection | Compilation / Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drSNK 40th Anniversary Collection is a selection of 32 classic SNK games released prior to the Neo Geo, mostly arcade games with a few Nintendo Entertainment System games as well, with the games being mostly 2-Stick Shooters, Shmups, and Top-Down Action games. There’s a lot of trash to wade through in this collection, but there are a handful of real gems too, and a healthy helping of game options and bonus content. If you’re a fan of classic games, specifically the genres I named above, this collection may be worth your while. | |||
| Space Dave | Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drSpace Dave is an Arcade-style game in the same vein as Space Invaders, with players dodging enemy fire from above while jumping over lava pits created by enemies who dive-bomb the stage. This take on the Space Invaders formula has some fun and creative elements to it, but many players will find the absurdly tough difficulty to be a huge barrier to enjoying this game. However, if you’re looking for an old-school-style game with a challenge, Space Dave may be worth a look. | |||
| Spectrum | Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drSpectrum is an arcade-style maze game where you try to reach each level’s exit without touching any colored blocks. It has some interesting level design and a solid visual presentation, but the game is far too short and the soundtrack is terrible. | |||
| Super Loop Drive | Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drSuper Loop Drive is an Arcade-style game where you can speed up or slow down your car on the track to avoid collisions at crossings. The presentation here is surprisingly good, and the gameplay is decent, although it gets repetitive quickly and there’s a lot of missed opportunity here for something more. Still, if you’re looking for an inexpensive time-waster on the Switch, this game is pretty decent. | |||
| Sweet Survivors | Arcade / Roguelike | C+ | |
tl;drSweet Survivors is a mix of Arcade-style gameplay with Roguelike mechanics in the “Bullet Heaven” style popularized by Vampire Survivors, with the theme this time being baristas delivering coffee while being mobbed by cats. The core gameplay is good, and there are a few interesting ideas here, but overall this still doesn’t measure up to Vampire Survivors. | |||
| The Original Mobile Games | Compilation / Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drThe Original Mobile Games is a Compilation of six simple Arcade-style games, with more available through paid DLC. These games are all loving recreations of classic handheld tilting “puzzle” games, usually involving navigating small balls through a maze. As a snapshot of a piece of history, this is a wonderfully well-crafted Collection, with lots of wonderful historical tidbits. However, as a game, this is a pretty simple collection that you’ll likely complete in under ten minutes. In other words, this is a game to get if you’re looking for a fascinating history lesson, not for great gameplay. | |||
| Thy Sword | Arcade / Action-Platformer | C+ | |
tl;drThy Sword is an Arcade-style Action-Platformer where players slash their way through rooms full of enemies. This game has a lot of great retro-style charm and appeal, but it unfortunately suffers from issues with frustrating hit detection, repetitive gameplay, and slow progression. As a result, what could have been a great throwback game is instead just a decent one. | |||
| Traffix | Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drTraffix is an Arcade-style game that has players directing the flow of traffic at busy intersections. The visual style of this game looks fantastic, with a slick, minimalist look. However, the gameplay itself is pretty shallow, and the gameplay is more about timing merging with oncoming traffic than it is about management. If you’re looking to kill time with a stylish game for a few minutes, Traffix may satisfy you, but don’t expect it to keep you hooked for much longer than that. | |||
| Urban Flow | Arcade / Party Game | C+ | |
tl;drUrban Flow is a game that has one to four players controlling traffic by turning on and off traffic lights. This is a decent simple game with a lot of potential for hectic hijinks, and while there are areas it could have done with some improvement, overall this is a game well worth trying if that sounds interesting to you. | |||
| Void Prison | 2-Stick Shooter / Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drVoid Prison is an Arcade-style 2-Stick Shooter where enemies can’t kill the player directly, but instead try to push the player to the edge of the circular arena. The unique gameplay mechanics make this game fairly unique among 2-Stick Shooters, but the lack of depth and poor controls mean that even though you may find this a fun little $3 distraction, it’s not a game you’re likely to play for very long. | |||
| Zombo Buster Rising | Arcade | C+ | |
tl;drZombo Buster Rising is an Arcade-style game with some light Tower Defense elements where players are defending a post-apocalyptic shelter from invading zombies. The variety of enemies and upgradeable elements help to keep this game constantly giving players something new to deal with, but the minute-to-minute gameplay can get repetitive and dull. Overall, this is a decent time-waster, but not much more than that. | |||
| Airfield Mania | Arcade | C | |
tl;drAirfield Mania is an Arcade-style game where players use the touchscreen to direct color-coded planes to the appropriate landing strip. There’s nothing especially novel or unique about this take on the classic formula, and the $6 price tag seems steep for a game that’s low on content and lacks the ability to play in docked mode. However, if you’re looking for a fun and simple Arcade-style game to play via the touchscreen while you’re on the go, this is a decent choice. | |||
| Arcade Archives Don Doko Don | Action-Platformer / Arcade | C | |
tl;drDon Doko Don is an Arcade-style Action-Platformer that strongly resembles Bubble Bobble, though it’s more challenging and not on par with that beloved classic. It’s not a terrible game, but I don’t think it will hold the interest of modern players for very long before they give up and move on to something else. | |||
| Arcade Archives Donkey Kong | Arcade / Platformer | C | |
tl;drDonkey Kong is an absolute classic Arcade-style Platformer, albeit one that definitely shows its age, and most modern players won’t be eager to buy a game you can complete in five minutes. On top of this, the price seems too steep, especially with the NES version of the game being easily accessible on Nintendo Switch Online’s NES app. As a result, while this is still one of the most important videogames ever made, it’s a game that almost no one will find worth buying. | |||
| Atari Recharged Collection 2 | Compilation / Arcade / 2-Stick Shooter | C | |
tl;drAtari Recharged Collection 2 is a physical-only Compilation containing the 2-Stick Shooter, Black Widow: Recharged, and the Arcade-style game, Centipede: Recharged. Both are solid re-imaginings of classic Atari games, but that hardly matters because the price of this package is at least 75% higher than getting the digital games separately. Unless you absolutely must get your games in physical form, skip this. | |||
| Beeny | Platformer / Arcade | C | |
tl;drBeeny is an Arcade-style Platformer with a great presentation reminiscent of the classic Donkey Kong Country trilogy. However, the gameplay that has you jumping up tree branches as a round bee isn’t very noteworthy or memorable, and the game’s extremely short 15-minute length, while offset by its tiny $1 price, nevertheless results in this being a pretty unimpactful experience. | |||
| Best Sniper Legacy: Dino Hunt & Shooter 3D | Arcade / First-Person Shooter | C | |
tl;drBest Sniper Legacy is an Arcade-style First-person Shooter where players use a sniper rifle to take down dinosaurs. This game’s graphics are surprisingly good, and the premise holds a lot of promise, but the gameplay suffers from too many limitations due to this game’s mobile origins. It’s not terrible, but there are better options on the Nintendo Switch. | |||
| Bit.Trip Core | Arcade / Music-Rhythm | C | |
tl;drBit.Trip Core is an Arcade-style game that has you firing at dots in one of four directions in time with a beat. Despite its simplicity, this game is deceptively difficult, and its presentation isn’t as appealing as some of the other games in the series. As a result, this is a game I’d argue only fans of the Bit.Trip series should get. | |||
| CastleStorm II | Tower Defense / Arcade / Turn-Based Strategy | C | |
tl;drCastleStorm II builds on the combination of side-scrolling Tower Defense and Arcade-style gameplay of its predecessor while adding a greater Turn-Based Strategy element. Unfortunately, this pull toward Turn-Based Strategy ruins much of the elegant simplicity of the first game, and the game is overall more rough, more poorly optimized for Nintendo Switch, and just overall a worse game than its predecessor. Just stick with the first CastleStorm. | |||
| Classic Games Puzzle Collection | Compilation / Arcade / Match-3 Puzzle | C | |
tl;drClassic Games Puzzle Collection is a Compilation containing three bad knock-offs of the classic Arcade game Qix, and three mediocre knockoffs of the classic Match-3 Puzzle Bust-A-Move AKA Puzzle Bobble. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the price of this Compilation is insultingly high, though when the bundle inevitably goes on sale for $2, I suppose some may find it worthwhile. Still, it’s hard for me to recommend a bundle full of cheaply-made copy-pasted games. | |||
| CrossKrush | Arcade / Puzzle | C | |
tl;drCrossKrush is an Arcade-style game where players take the role of an elderly couple blowing up cars trying to drive in front of their house. This amusing premise unfortunately makes for somewhat tedious gameplay that is constantly making the player wait before they can take action. As a result, while CrossKrush isn’t a terrible game, it’s not an especially fun game either. | |||
| Draw Chilly | Arcade | C | |
tl;drDraw Chilly is an Arcade-style game that tasks players with managing a crew of mechanics in purgatory who must lift a platform up an endless corridor while fending off attacks from monkeys. No, it doesn’t make any more sense in context. Unfortunately, this game’s interesting and unusual elements are undermined by its tedious combat and uninteresting upgrades. You’re probably better off leaving this one in purgatory. | |||
| Emoji Music | Arcade | C | |
tl;drEmoji Music is an Arcade-style game with a great pop-style soundtrack and simple, boring gameplay. It’s just not worth playing this to get to the great music, when you could just listen to a music app instead. | |||
| EvoMon | Arcade / Virtual Pet | C | |
tl;drEvoMon is a game with Arcade minigames and Virtua Pet elements housed within a package that imitates Pokemon, but everything here is shallow and gives players little reason to keep playing after trying everything out. Skip it. | |||
| Food Truck Tycoons – 2 in 1 Bundle | Compilation / Arcade | C | |
tl;drFood Truck Tycoons – 2 in 1 Bundle contains two Arcade-style games in the “restaurant tycoon” style (without Simulation elements). Both games are decent but not great, and this package is a decent but not great value. Unfortunately for this package, Cooking Arena – 10 in 1 Edition offers a much better value, and if you want the games in this bundle you’re better off getting that bundle instead. | |||
| Get Me Outta Here | Action-Platformer / Arcade | C | |
tl;drGet Me Outta Here is an Arcade-style Action-Platformer where players play an abducted human blasting waves of aliens on a spaceship. There’s a decent variety of enemies to fight here, but the core gameplay remains constant and gets repetitive pretty quickly. Also, the digitized voices here are pretty annoying. All in all, this is game is okay, but there are much better options on the Switch. | |||
| Hamster Playground | Arcade / Simulation | C | |
tl;drHamster Playground is a family-friendly free-to-play game where players “take care of” a hamster in a manner vaguely similar to a very light Virtual Pet game, and then have them tackle minigames (just one unless you pay for DLC). The game succeeds at being cute and largely inoffensive, but there’s not enough depth to keep things entertaining here, and playing the game just feels like doing simple tasks rather than actually playing. Unless you’re a young child with a fondness for furry critters, this is not worth your time. | |||
| Hot Shot Burn | Top-Down Arcade / Party Game | C | |
tl;drHot Shot Burn is a Top-Down Arcade-style Party Game where players try to shoot each other in an arena. There’s a good mix of fairly balanced characters here, but the game is dragged down by a laundry list of flaws ranging from unskippable between-match menus slowing things down, a lack of second-stick aiming, and empty online lobbies. If it weren’t for the flaws, this would be a great simple multiplayer Party Game, but as it is, it’s hard to recommend this game over the many other better options on the Nintendo Switch. | |||
| Hyperlight Ultimate | Bullet Hell Shmup / Arcade | C | |
tl;drHyperlight Ultimate is an Arcade-style Shmup where players bash into enemies with a charge attack instead of shooting them. It’s a good take on the formula, but unfortunately some design issues makes this more tedious and frustrating than it needs to be. | |||
| Jamjam | Platformer / Arcade | C | |
tl;drJamjam is an Arcade-style Platformer where players control a jumping cube of jelly, trying to get it to a goal. This game’s physics and trajectory-based gameplay are occasionally fun, but they’re just as often frustrating due to this game’s inadequate controls. The result, while not bad, is too frustrating to wholeheartedly recommend. | |||
| Knights of the Rogue Dungeon | Arcade | C | |
tl;drKnights of the Rogue Dungeon is an Arcade-style game that is very clearly modeled after Q*Bert. While it has some interesting additions to that classic gameplay, none of those ideas work out very well, resulting in a game that’s just as frustrating as it is fun. | |||
| Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story | Compilation / Arcade | C | |
tl;drLlamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story is a Compilation containing 40 mostly Arcade-style games created by the titular Jeff Minter, creator of Tempest 2000 and Gridrunner. Unfortunately, I do not think most of these games have aged well, and while Digital Eclipse has once again done a superb job with its documentary-style exploration of this section of videogame history, I don’t think that’s going to be enough to win over those who aren’t already smitten with Minter’s catalog of games. Unless you like retro-style Arcade games that are hard, weird, and at times difficult to understand, this probably isn’t for you. | |||
| Marble Parkour | Arcade | C | |
tl;drMarble Parkour is an Arcade-style game where players try to guide their marble through obstacle courses to an exit. The game seems amateurishly made, and while there is some interesting level design here, the game’s short length doesn’t justify even the low $5 price tag. | |||
| Namco Museum | Compilation / Arcade / Various | C | |
tl;drNamco Museum features a collection of games that includes some true classics. Unfortunately, when you compare this to other game compilations, even prior Namco Museum releases, the $30 price tag is a huge rip-off for only 10 games, 9 of which were released over 25 years ago. For shame. | |||
| Namco Museum Archives Vol. 1 | Compilation / Arcade / Shmup | C | |
tl;drNamco Museum Archives Vol. 1 is a Compilation of 11 Namco games, mostly classic Nintendo Entertainment System games. There are a few decent games that you can pretty much only get in this collection, but most of the games here are terrible, and most are available elsewhere on Nintendo Switch in their original Arcade form, making it hard to justify this game’s $20 price. Unless you’re a completionist, skip this. | |||
| NecroWorm | Arcade / Puzzle | C | |
tl;drNecroWorm is an Arcade-style Puzzle game that has you trying to collect all the pickups in each level without trapping yourself with your own body. It’s a fairly standard, predictable Puzzle game with an intentionally off-putting presentation. If that sounds appealing to you, you’ll probably be satisfied with this game. | |||
| Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition | Arcade / Party Game | C | |
tl;drNintendo World Championships: NES Edition presents classic Nintendo Entertainment System games cut up into smaller competitions and challenging players to compete in them for the best times. Unfortunately, the lack of variety in goal types, the inability to compete with others online in real-time, and some control issues really hobble this one out of the gate. There’s still some enjoyment to be found here, but it’s sadly not what it could have been. | |||
| Numbala | Arcade / Educational | C | |
tl;drNumbala is an Arcade-style game with Educational elements that has players indirectly controlling their ship’s altitude to collect numbered discs and evade obstacles. There are some interesting ideas here, but the absolutely terrible controls and lack of useful in-game indicators make this more frustrating than fun. | |||
| Pako Caravan | Arcade | C | |
tl;drPako Caravan is an Arcade-style game in the style of the classic game Snake, but with cars. It infuses the genre with some variety by adding in different level goals to accomplish, but the basic controls for turning your vehicle are sluggish and unwieldy, resulting in a game that’s decent but not great. | |||
| Party Golf | Arcade / Party Game | C | |
tl;drGolf Party is an Arcade/Party game where up to 8 players all compete in real-time to get their ball to the hole on a 2D course, bumping into one another and making use of all sorts of different game modes and options. The gameplay can at times be frustrating, but players may find some appeal in the chaotic action. | |||
| Peace, Death! Complete Edition | Arcade | C | |
tl;drPeace, Death! Is an Arcade-style game where players must decide whether the people they’re sorting are headed for heaven or hell. The gameplay here is simple, but becomes more complex over time as you get a growing list of criteria. However, despite these complications, this still all just feels like tedious busywork, and isn’t especially fun or compelling. | |||
| Pirate Bloopers | Arcade | C | |
tl;drPirate Bloopers is a family-friendly Arcade-style game where players collect treasure to upgrade their ship while taking out or evading enemy ships. Unfortunately, the simple fun of the game is undermined by some frustrating control issues a lack of variety in upgrades the game offers you, and the absence of multiplayer. There’s still some fun to be found here, but it’s nestled among far too much frustration. | |||
| Pizza Bar Tycoon | Arcade | C | |
tl;drPizza Bar Tycoon is an Arcade-style game that doesn’t play much like Overcooked or Cooking Mama. It’s more like a food version of Simon Says, where players respond to orders by selecting the correct ingredients. The gameplay is decent, but this game is a bit too simplistic, with a lack of variety and options when compared to Cook, Serve, Delicious! 2!! If you’re looking for an Arcade-style food prep game, I recommend you get that one instead. | |||
| Press “A” to Party | Arcade / Party Game | C | |
tl;drPress “A” to Party is a One-Button Arcade-style Party game where players try to see how long they can last in one of six simple one-button minigames. Only two of the included minigames here are particularly fun, and while those two games make for a decent but brief distraction, two worthwhile minigames doesn’t make for a very compelling minigame collection. | |||
| Quest for the Golden Duck | Arcade | C | |
tl;drQuest for the Golden Duck is a decent but largely unspectacular Pac-Man clone. | |||
| Ready, Steady, Ship! | Arcade | C | |
tl;drReady, Steady, Ship! is a co-op focused Arcade-style game in the vein of Overcooked that has players piecing together conveyor belts to get packages to their destination. The concept here is good, but it’s undermined by some frustrating gameplay issues and a lack of features and options we’ve come to expect from games like this. It’s not bad, but it could have been so much better. | |||
| Road to Ballhalla | Maze Game / Music-Rhythm | C | |
tl;drRoad to Ballhalla is a Ball-Rolling Maze Game with Music-Rhythm elements. It’s decent, but doesn’t do anything particularly noteworthy, and is devoid of personality. | |||
| Rock of Ages III: Make & Break | Tower Defense / Arcade | C | |
tl;drRock of Ages III takes the series’ combination of Tower Defense and ball-rolling Arcade-style gameplay and adds in a healthy amount of variety and a level builder, giving this game so much potential to be the absolute best in its series… potential that is completely destroyed by this game’s terrible freezing problems. As a result, I cannot in good conscience recommend this game, despite how fun it is when it works… because far too often, it doesn’t. | |||
| Skypeace | Arcade | C | |
tl;drSkypeace is an Arcade-style game where players take the role of an anime-style character on a flying surfboard in fast-paced Arcade-style “Avoid-’em-Up” gameplay. It’s simple and repetitive, and the visuals are at times difficult to keep track of, but for only $1 you may still find this to be a decent time-waster. | |||
| Slayin 2 | Arcade | C | |
tl;drSlayin 2 is an Arcade-style game where players run through enemies in the foreground and background, trying to keep the horde of enemies manageable. Unfortunately, that often feels like a difficult task thanks to how quickly enemies spawn, and is made more difficult by enemies that players cannot approach from the front, often resulting in taking what seems like unavoidable damage. While the gameplay here is fairly unique, it may be too frustrating for most to enjoy. | |||
| Smash Out | Arcade | C | |
tl;drSmash Out is a family-friendly physics-based Arcade-style game where players use the touchscreen to fling balls at blocks to push them off of a platform. This game does nothing special or extraordinary, but for a mere $1, this is a decent time-waster. | |||
| Snakeybus | Driving / Arcade / Misc. | C | |
tl;drSnakeybus is a game that takes the basic idea of the classic game Snake and re-imagines it as a game where you’re picking up and dropping off fares in a constantly-growing bus. It’s a silly but compelling concept, and it occasionally manages to be fun, but it is frequently brought down here by a huge laundry list of flaws that mar the experience and make it far less fun than it should be. | |||
| Squeakers II | Arcade / Platformer | C | |
tl;drSqueakers II, like its predecessor, is an Arcade-style Platformer that has players building up a structure to try and escape a rising water line. This sequel has a new 2-player competitive mode, more block types, and a more gradual difficulty curve, but it still suffers from the finicky block placement issue that marred the first game. | |||
| Submarine Survivor | Arcade / Roguelike | C | |
tl;drSubmarine Survivor is an Arcade-style Roguelike in the “Bullet Heaven” style similar to Vampire Survivors, with players piloting a submarine that automatically attacks to fend off hostile sea creatures. While not terrible, this is extremely repetitive, with slow gameplay, boring upgrades, and little to justify the same $5 price tag as Vampire Survivors. You have multiple better options in this genre. | |||
| Toast Time: Smash Up! | Arcade / Action-Platformer | C | |
tl;drToast Time is an Arcade-style Action-Platformer where players control toasters that attack by flinging toast, which also flings them in the opposite direction. It’s a clever concept, but it makes the gameplay chaotic, especially in multiplayer. It’s still enjoyable in short sessions, but it’s not likely to be a game you’ll play for very long. | |||
| Witcheye | Arcade | C | |
tl;drWitcheye is an Arcade-style game that has players controlling an eye as it flies and bounces through levels filled with enemies and hazards. The presentation here is excellent, but the controls are really awkward and off-putting. Whether you enjoy this game will really depend on how much patience you have for this frustrating gameplay. | |||
| Woodturning 3D | Arcade | C | |
tl;drWoodturning 3D is an Arcade-style game that has you using a woodturning device to carve pieces of wood. The core gameplay here is fun, but the lack of any meaningful goals results in a game that fails to build on that good gameplay. It’s still enjoyable in small bursts, but doesn’t have the staying power to hold your attention for much longer than that. | |||
| World Spin | Arcade | C | |
tl;drWorld Spin is an Arcade-style game where players spin around each level to try to get a ball to a button as fast as possible. This works, and may suffice as a time-waster, but this game is far too simple and too easy to be anything more than that. | |||
| Zombillie | Arcade / Puzzle | C | |
tl;drZombillie is an Arcade-style Puzzle game that has you munching your way through mazes while avoiding your own growing body. It’s a decent but unspectacular entry in the genre, with some good presentation elements but sluggish controls. Not bad, but not great. | |||
| 9 Lives to Defend | Arcade | C- | |
tl;dr9 Lives to Defend is an Arcade-style game in the style of “bullet heaven” games like Vampire Survivors, with this game placing you in the role of a cat defending its household from invading vermin. While this game has all the core pieces to make for a decent entry in this genre, it has a laundry list of problems, including bullet sponge enemies, enemies that spawn right on top of you, a lack of synergy, and nasty slowdown issues. Given the abundance of better alternatives with a low price point (not least of which is Vampire Survivors itself), I can’t give this game a recommendation. | |||
| ACA NEOGEO The Super Spy | First-Person Arcade / Action | C- | |
tl;drThe Super Spy is a First-Person Arcade-style Action game that puts players in the role of a spy fighting terrorists with fists, hand weapons, and occasionally guns. It’s a fairly unique game, but it’s too shallow to hold your interest for very long, and the fantasy-themed Crossed Swords does this style of gameplay (more or less) much better. | |||
| Aeolis Tournament | Top-Down Arcade / Party Game | C- | |
tl;drAeolis Tournament is a family-friendly Top-Down Arcade-style Party Game where players use vacuum guns for various events. Unfortunately, the events are far too few in number, are too shallow, and the vacuum mechanic has problems of its own. The result is a good idea that’s ultimately done poorly, and not worth your time. | |||
| Arcade Archives Donkey Kong Jr. | Arcade / Platformer | C- | |
tl;drDonkey Kong Jr. is a classic Arcade-style Platformer, albeit one that definitely shows its age, and most modern players won’t be eager to buy a game you can complete in fifteen minutes. On top of this, the price seems too steep, especially with the NES version of the game being easily accessible on Nintendo Switch Online’s NES app. As a result, while this is still a classic, it’s a game that almost no one will find worth buying. | |||
| Arcade Archives Donkey Kong 3 | Arcade / Action-Platformer | C- | |
tl;drDonkey Kong 3 is an Arcade-style Platformer where players are literally tasked with shooting bug spray at Donkey Kong’s butt. An odd game to be sure, and it’s decent, but nowhere near as memorable or compelling as the prior two games in the series. On top of this, the price seems too steep, especially with the NES version of the game being easily accessible on Nintendo Switch Online’s NES app. As a result, it’s difficult to give this game a recommendation. | |||
| Arcade Archives Mappy | Arcade / Platformer | C- | |
tl;drMappy is an Arcade game with Platformer elements where you play as a mouse cop trying to evade criminal cats and steal back their stolen goods. The gameplay here takes some getting used to, and I ultimately think you’re better off playing the NES version in Namco Museum Archives Vol. 1, which at $20 for 11 games is a far better deal than the overpriced $8 for this one game is. | |||
| Arcade Archives Mario Bros. | Arcade / Platformer | C- | |
tl;drMario Bros. is a classic Arcade-style Platformer where players must clear a sewer of an infestation of vermin. It’s a classic throwback game, albeit somewhat dated by today’s standards. However, the real issue here is that there are multiple versions of this game available on Nintendo Switch Online’s apps, and those other versions are all better. On top of this, the price seems too steep, making it difficult to give this game a recommendation. | |||
| Astro Miner | Isometric Arcade / Simulation | C- | |
tl;drAstro Miner is a game with Isometric Arcade and Simulation elements that has players using a vacuum to dig through dirt on various planets to gather resources. The premise here isn’t bad, but multiple game mechanics don’t work quite right, and the overall game design is far too repetitive. The result is a game that may entertain for a little while, but isn’t likely to hold your interest for long. | |||
| Atari Recharged Collection 1 + 2 Dual Pack | Compilation / Arcade | C- | |
tl;drAtari Recharged Collection 1 + 2 Dual Pack is a physical-only Compilation containing Asteroids: Recharged, Breakout: Recharged, Black Widow: Recharged, and Centipede: Recharged. Three of these are solid re-imaginings of classic Atari games (the lone dud being Breakout: Recharged), but that hardly matters because the price of this package is at least 75% higher than getting the digital games separately. Unless you absolutely must get your games in physical form, skip this. | |||
| Atari Recharged: Volume Two | Compilation / Arcade | C- | |
tl;drAtari Recharged: Volume Two is a Compilation containing Berzerk: Recharged, Caverns of Mars: Recharged, Gravitar: Recharged, Missile Command: Recharged, and Yars: Recharged, all re-imaginings of classic Atari era hits. Unfortunately, of this batch of games, the only one that’s truly must-play is Yars: Recharged, and this bundle doesn’t even offer enough of a savings to make it worthwhile to get the entire batch. Because of this, I suggest you skip this bundle and just get Yars: Recharged. | |||
| Basketball Arcade | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drBasketball Arcade is a family-friendly Arcade-style game designed to imitate Basketball-throwing games from real-life arcades. Played only in handheld mode with the screen oriented vertically, with players using the touchscreen, this game gets the job done with its visuals and gameplay, but is too monotonous to recommend, even for its low $2 price tag. | |||
| Big Buck Hunter Arcade | Shooting Gallery Game | C- | |
tl;drBig Buck Hunter Arcade is a Shooting Gallery Game that has players trying to hit male deer and other animals while avoiding does, and while the gameplay here is surprisingly fun and varied, that fun is harmed by some exceptionally poor pacing and a control scheme that is extremely poorly-suited to the gameplay. Controlling a light gun game by moving an on-screen cursor almost never works, and it doesn’t work here. As a result, what good qualities this game does have are outweighed by its problems and frustrations. | |||
| Color Breakers | Arcade / Party Game | C- | |
tl;drColor Breakers is an Arcade / Party Game where players move around characters who use giant colored pencils to recreate a painting. Unfortunately, movement is awkward and the game does too poor a job indicating where your marks will be made, leading to an experience that’s frustrating more often than it is fun. | |||
| Cooking Mama: Cookstar | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drCooking Mama Cookstar is an Arcade-style game that has been surrounded by rumors and controversy, with the game pulled from the eShop shortly after its release. However, the reality of the situation is that this game is neither a hidden masterpiece nor an epic disaster. It’s just a mediocre game that neither meets its series’ potential nor is it an interesting enough train wreck to make for a fun spectacle. It is merely a mediocre but playable game with slow pacing, lackluster controls, and simple, boring gameplay. | |||
| Cosmic Defenders | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drCosmic Defenders is an Arcade-style game that has you moving a character around a planet or planets, fending off alien attacks. It’s a game that works on a decent but well-established formula, but it’s harmed by counter-intuitive controls. The result is a game that’s not without its charms, but isn’t likely to keep you entertained for long. | |||
| Deadly Fighter 2 | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drDeadly Fighter 2 is an Arcade-style game where players fend off hordes of enemy ninjas attacking from the left and right. The simple game mechanics and nice visuals are appealing, but the flawed and repetitive gameplay make this a game you’re not likely to want to play for more than a few minutes at a time. | |||
| Donuts’n’Justice | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drDonuts’n’Justice is an Arcade-style game where players control a cop on auto-scrolling stages trying to gun down criminals while avoiding hitting bystanders. The gameplay here is just too tedious and frustrating to be enjoyable, and even those who don’t mind these frustrations will likely grow bored with how repetitive this game is. This isn’t one I recommend. | |||
| Frontline Zed | Arcade / Shooting Gallery | C- | |
tl;drFrontline Zed is an Arcade-style Shooting Gallery game where players protect a barricade by shooting zombies. Unfortunately, the game suffers from numerous problems, such as issues with the aiming mechanics, lack of player utility in the game’s daytime sections, ugly graphics, and overall tedious gameplay. It’s not without its harms, but overall this game isn’t really worth it. | |||
| Funny Bunny Adventures | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drFunny Bunny Adventures is a family-friendly QBert-style Arcade game that really feels like the mobile port it is. It’s a passable game, but the slow pacing and off-putting presentation make it unlikely that anyone other than young children will enjoy it for very long. | |||
| Gem Smashers | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drGem Smashers is an Arcade-style game where players bounce vertically and must change their color to collide with and destroy like-colored gems. The gameplay works, but it’s dull and far too easy. It’s not a terrible game, but I don’t see any reason you should bother with it. | |||
| Giant Rush | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drGiant Rush is an Arcade-style game with three different styles of gameplay, but all three of them are shallow and repetitive. Don’t waste your time or money on this. | |||
| Gnome More War | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drGnome More War is an Arcade-style game where players on the right side of the screen shoot at gnomes parachuting off a cliff on the left side of the screen. There’s good variety in enemy types and upgrades here, but it hardly matters when the gameplay is so sluggish and dull. Even for only $3, I think you can do better than this. | |||
| Grab the Bottle | Arcade / Puzzle | C- | |
tl;drGrab the Bottle is an Arcade-style Puzzle game where you guide a hand through an obstacle course of objects to grab collectables and then, as the title states, a bottle. It’s an odd, original premise, but it’s held back by frustrating, tedious gameplay that’s just not fun to play. | |||
| Gurgamoth | Arcade / Party Game | C- | |
tl;drGurgamoth is an Arcade-Style Party Game that has players as cultists bumping each other into hazards to please a grotesque elder god. It’s a simple game that could have been a fun take on a “bumper cars”-style formula, but loose and unwieldy controls make it hard to enjoy. | |||
| HardCube | Arcade / 3D Platformer | C- | |
tl;drHardCube is a family-friendly Arcade-style game with heavy Platforming elements that sells itself as a ball-rolling physics-based game like Marble Madness or Super Monkey Ball, but plays a lot more like a simple obstacle course Platformer, and not a very good one. Bad camera, simple gameplay, and slow and tedious pacing make this a game most will want to skip. | |||
| Henry the Hamster Handler | Puzzle / Arcade | C- | |
tl;drHenry the Hamster Handler has you pressing buttons at prompts much like Simon Says, to keep hamsters safe as they pass through various death traps. There was potential here for something really interesting, but that potential is never realized, with this game just being a tedious slog with a terrible presentation. | |||
| Hexagon Defense | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drHexagon Defense is an Arcade-style game that has you shooting enemies to keep them from reaching a spinning hexagon in the center of the screen. It’s a decent distraction, but it gets repetitive really quickly, and this release has multiple issues that mark it as an extremely sloppy, lazy port. For most players, this game probably isn’t worth even its low asking price. | |||
| Hyperide | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drHyperide is an Arcade-style obstacle course game where you’re flying a spaceship through an asteroid field collecting pickups. The game has a clever risk/reward system and decent graphics, but suffers from terrible, sluggish controls and highly repetitive gameplay. | |||
| Hyperide: Vector Raid | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drHyperide: Vector Raid is an Arcade-style game where players navigate a spacecraft through a path full of obstacles. Unfortunately, the forced camera perspective makes judging just where those obstacles are far too difficult, making the game often feel like it’s more down to luck than skill. You’re probably better off skipping it. | |||
| Hypotheses on the Symmetry Between Vision and Hands | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drHypotheses is probably best described as an Arcade-style game, having players simultaneously guide two hands through an obstacle course to their own exits. What seems designed as an exercise in multitasking quickly grows to be extremely frustrating due to numerous issues making this game far more tedious and irritating to play than I think most players will want to put up with. I recommend skipping this one. | |||
| Invasion of Alien X – Earth in Crisis | Shooting Gallery / Tower Defense | C- | |
tl;drInvasion of Alien X is a game that combines a Shooting Gallery-style game with a Tower Defense, in a way that’s absolutely full of originality, and bursting with personality… but is also unfortunately poorly-executed, with the limited perspective making for too much confusion, and the mix of genres resulting in neither being done especially well. This game might make for an interesting study case, but it’s not a fun game to play. | |||
| Jetboy | Action-Platformer / Arcade | C- | |
tl;drJetboy is an Arcade-style Action-Platformer where players must collect fuel and return it to their spaceship. This game has a great presentation with a mix of retro and modern elements. Unfortunately, this presentation is marred by slow movement that makes both fighting and avoiding enemies far more difficult than it should be. While this game isn’t without its charms, most players are better off skipping it. | |||
| Julie’s Sweets | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drJulie’s Sweets is an Arcade-style restaurant management game that declares its mobile roots loud and clear. Unfortunately, the poor gamepad controls and $10 price tag don’t sit well with that, and even without these flaws this is a pretty shallow game and there are better alternatives on the Nintendo Switch. | |||
| King Krieg Survivors | Arcade / Roguelike | C- | |
tl;drKing Krieg Survivors is an Arcade-style game and Roguelike clearly trying to copy the success of Vampire Survivors, and while this game does attempt something unique with its custom magic system, and its metal-inspired soundtrack is good, it is otherwise inferior to Vampire Survivors in every way, including its price. As such, there’s just no reason to play this when you could be playing Vampire Survivors instead. | |||
| Make it! Taiyaki | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drMake It! Taiyaki is an Arcade-style game where players make taiyaki, the Japanese fried pastry in the shape of a fish. This game would be great as a minigame in a larger Party Game, but on its own it’s far too monotonous, and you’ll grow tired of it soon after starting. | |||
| Make it! Yakitori | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drMake It! Yakitori is an Arcade-style game where players make yakitori, a Japanese meat and vegetable skewer. This game would be great as a minigame in a larger Party Game, but on its own it’s far too monotonous, and you’ll grow tired of it soon after starting. | |||
| Max and the Book of Chaos | Action-Platformer / Arcade | C- | |
tl;drMax and the Book of Chaos is an Arcade-style Action-Platformer that has you blasting enemies in single-screen stages reminiscent of the Buster Bros. games. Unfortunately, this game performs poorly on the Nintendo Switch, has control issues, and has tiny and at times unreadable text. This game still has its charms, but you have to put up with multiple frustrations to enjoy it. | |||
| Missile Command: Recharged | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drMissile Command: Recharged is a reimagining of the classic ‘80s Arcade game where players blast away incoming bombs with missile strikes. The presentation here is great, the new progression mechanics are nice, and the great classic gameplay still works well today. However, the game’s ridiculously high difficulty spikes almost immediately, and the inflated price makes this game seem like far from a good value. There’s some fun to be had here for a select audience, but most players are better off skipping this. | |||
| Mob Control | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drMob Control is an Arcade-style game where players aim a cannon to blast out hordes of minions to attack an enemy, hoping to use multiplier gates to increase their number and overwhelm the enemy. The gameplay here is simple and may hold your interest for a short while, but the slow progress in this game means you’ll probably grow bored with it quickly enough. | |||
| Multi Maze 3D | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drMulti Maze 3D is an Arcade-style game where players spin around each level to try to get balls through a maze while using multiplier gates to increase their number as much as possible. This game isn’t without its charms, but it’s shallow as a puddle, and the way it pushes you to engage with its microtransactions is disgusting. Skip this one. | |||
| Nice Slice | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drNice Slice is a physics-based Arcade-style game where you time button presses to send a hovering knife down to chop up food. It’s simple, repetitive, and even if your aim is good, the way the knife doesn’t go all the way down means a hit can still register as a miss. The result is a game you’ll quickly lose interest in. | |||
| Non-Stop Space Probe | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drNon-Stop Space Probe is an Arcade-style game that has players flying a spaceship through an obstacle course. While the presentation here is appealing, the gameplay is extremely unforgiving, and this is made worse by nasty, twitchy controls. Unless you’re looking for an old-school challenge with a lot of frustration, skip this game. | |||
| Override 2: Super Mech League | Fighting Game / Arcade | C- | |
tl;drOverride 2 is a game that combines Fighting Game and Arcade-style action with players fighting each other as mechs in enclosed arenas. While the gameplay is enjoyable in a shallow way, the performance on Nintendo Switch is atrocious, the camera is horrible, and the online play this game wants to highlight is a ghost town. The result is a game that’s very difficult to recommend. | |||
| Penguin Wars | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drPenguin Wars is an Arcade-style game that has characters tossing balls at each other like dodgeball. The game has a nice, colorful presentation, but the clunky controls keep this from being very fun. | |||
| Pirates: All Aboard! | Compilation / Top-Down Auto-Runner / Arcade / Party Game | C- | |
tl;drPirates: All Aboard! Is a Compilation of a single-player Top-Down Auto-Runner where players move a ship through obstacles, and a multiplayer Arcade-style Party Game where players navigate their ships trying to sink each other. Both modes are bland and uninspired, and the single-player mode is even worse due to an unforgiving challenge level and poor hit detection. In the end, this game (or pair of games) isn’t without some enjoyment to be had, but you’re much better off getting something else instead. | |||
| Pixel Game Maker Series Biggerman.io | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drBiggerman.io is a family-friendly Arcade-style game where players move a featureless humanoid character around, grabbing up little white men to grow bigger. It’s a formula reminiscent of Katamari Damacy or Hole io, but poor game design makes this inferior to both of those games, and if you want something like this, you should get one of those games instead. | |||
| Project Snaqe | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drProject Snaqe is an Arcade-style game that builds on the premise of the classic game Snake with players alternating between drilling rocks and shooting down enemies in an underground mining vehicle. Unfortunately, this great idea isn’t really capitalized on, and the game’s controls are laggy and not as responsive as they need to be. As a result, what could have been a great reimagining of a classic game ends up just being a sub-par take on the formula. | |||
| Rawr-Off | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drRawr-Off is an Arcade-style game that plays like competitive Wack-A-Mole. It does a decent job adding the multiplayer twist to the classic game, but the motion controls in TV mode leave a lot to be desired, and even with the inventive way handheld mode was implemented, it still feels like this game is too shallow to be entertaining for very long. | |||
| Run the Fan | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drRun the Fan is an Arcade-style game that combines the ball-rolling of games like Monkey Ball with puzzle elements that require you to use the ball to complete a circuit. Unfortunately, these puzzle elements slow down the action, and the action makes the puzzles frustrating. The result is a game that just isn’t very fun. | |||
| Smash Boats | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drSmash Boats is a family-friendly Arcade-style game where players try to use their toy boat to ram into other toy boats. This is a decent but far too simple game, and certainly not worth the $15 price tag. Maybe if there were more game modes, multiplayer, or more depth to the gameplay, this would be a better game, but as-is it’s probably best to miss this boat. | |||
| Space Hole | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drSpace Hole is an Arcade-style game that has players dodging enemies as they collect dots and bring them to the titular space hole. The gameplay here is simple and repetitive, and even with a low $1 price tag I can’t really recommend a game that you’ll get bored of within minutes. | |||
| SpongeBob: Krusty Cook-Off | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drSpongeBob: Krusty Cook-Off is an Arcade-style game in the vein of “Cooking Tycoon” games, and while this is a functional entry in the genre, it does nothing interesting. In fact, this seems to just be an excuse to slap the SpongeBob on a lazy effort to make money with an inflated price tag. Don’t fall for this – both SpongeBob fans and players looking for fun cooking-themed games have much better options. | |||
| Squeakers | Arcade / Platformer | C- | |
tl;drSqueakers is an Arcade-style Platformer that has players building up a structure to try and escape a rising water line. Unfortunately, the finicky mechanics mean building that structure will be a frustrating process. This game has a great basic concept, but the execution is lacking. | |||
| Summer Catchers | Arcade / Auto-Runner | C- | |
tl;drSummer Catchers is an Arcade-style game with Auto-Runner elements that has you using power-ups to get your speeding wooden car past obstacles. Unfortunately, both the power-ups and obstacles are randomized, leading to a lot of deaths due to that randomization. And while the presentation here is absolutely delightful, it doesn’t make up for gameplay that just isn’t fun. | |||
| Super Snake Block | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drSuper Snake Block is an Arcade-style game that plays a bit like an over-the-shoulder Auto-Runner game, while incorporating a few elements of the classic Snake game, all with a voxel-style presentation. There are some good ideas here, but the poor controls keep this from being anything you’re likely to be playing for very long before moving on. | |||
| Tales of the Tiny Planet | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drTales of the Tiny Planet is a physics-based one-button mobile-style Arcade game with Puzzle elements where players guide a ball to a goal within a time limit by manipulating parts of the level with a single button. The presentation and gameplay is simple but enjoyable, but this is far too insubstantial a game for the price, and unless you get it on sale and don’t mind a simple time-waster, I’d suggest skipping it. | |||
| Think of the Children | Arcade / Party Game | C- | |
tl;drThink of the Children is an arcade/party game where you have to scramble to set up a fun outing while keeping a group of seemingly suicidal children from offing themselves. It’s frantic and nerve-wracking… but for me, it just left me with frayed nerves. | |||
| Totes the Goat | Arcade / Puzzle | C- | |
tl;drTotes the Goat is an Arcade/Puzzle game that has you jumping from one platform to the next to change their color. Basically, this is a copy of the old game QBert, and it does little to distinguish itself. It’s fine, but nothing great. | |||
| Train Valley: Console Edition | Management Simulation / Arcade | C- | |
tl;drTrain Valley is a game that mixes Management Simulation elements with Arcade-style elements. This game design is fairly unique and charming. However, it’s ruined by absolutely atrocious controls that make it a pain to do what you want in the game. Unless you have a great deal of patience, you’re probably better off skipping this one. | |||
| TumbleSeed | Arcade / Roguelike | C- | |
tl;drTumbleSeed is a unique game that combines Arcade and Roguelike elements, having a player using both analog sticks to balance a seed on a vine as it teeters left and right on the game’s procedurally-generated levels. There are some clever, unique ideas here, but it’s hard to appreciate them with controls and game design that are seemingly designed to frustrate the player. Only the most patient players should bother with this one. | |||
| Uni | Compilation / Arcade | C- | |
tl;drUni is a collection of 40 mini-games that can only be played with 2 players. Most of these games are outright terrible, but there are a handful of pretty good ones mixed in here, and if you can get this collection on discount they might prove to be a good distraction. However, even the best games here are seriously lacking content and options needed to hold your interest for very long. | |||
| War of Ships | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drWar of Ships is a multiplayer-focused Arcade-style game where players engage in combat with ships in an enclosed battle royale-style arena. The inability to aim your shots and the overall shallow gameplay makes this a game you’ll get bored with quickly. It’s not a total shipwreck, but there’s little here worth salvaging. | |||
| Who is Zombie | Arcade | C- | |
tl;drWho is Zombie is an Arcade-style game that copies the formula of Papers, Please and applies it to a guard at a shelter for survivors during a zombie apocalypse, trying to let in hapless survivors and keep out threats. It’s a great premise, but it’s really harmed by terrible execution, with horrible menu controls, an unforgiving timer, and poorly-organized information. The result is a game that falls well short of its inspiration. | |||
| Wild Guns Reloaded | Arcade / Shooting Gallery | C- | |
tl;drWild Guns Reloaded takes the arcade classic Shooting Gallery game, where you target enemies onscreen while dodging bullets with your character, and adds two new characters while cleaning up the visuals. Unfortunately, the gameplay has not aged well, and frustration with the controls and punishing difficulty make it hard to recommend. | |||
| Animal Puzzle Cats | Arcade | D+ | |
tl;drAnimal Puzzle Cats is an Arcade-style game that copies the Qix gameplay formula of drawing lines to create shapes to fill in the screen while avoiding enemies. This game even brings some good ideas to this classic gameplay, but then it ruins them with terrible controls and other issues that will result in players repeatedly getting killed due to stuff out of their control. This game had the potential to be so much better, but with these problems I simply cannot recommend this to anyone. | |||
| Animal Puzzle World | Arcade | D+ | |
tl;drAnimal Puzzle World is an Arcade-style game that copies the Qix gameplay formula of drawing lines to create shapes to fill in the screen while avoiding enemies. This game even brings some good ideas to this classic gameplay, but then it ruins them with terrible controls and other issues that will result in players repeatedly getting killed due to stuff out of their control. This game had the potential to be so much better, but with these problems I simply cannot recommend this to anyone. | |||
| Arcade Archives Pac-Man | Arcade | D+ | |
tl;drPac-Man is an Arcade classic, a legend that’s one of the most influential games in videogame history, and even if the original game is too repetitive compared to many of its sequels, it’s still a delight to play. But don’t get the Arcade Archives version of the game – it’s far too overpriced, and there are numerous collections on Nintendo Switch that include the game. Get one of those instead. | |||
| Arcade Fuzz | Compilation / Arcade | D+ | |
tl;drArcade Fuzz is a compilation of two Arcade-style games, TTV3 and Warpzone Drifter. TTV3 has players avoiding obstacles and trying to reach the edge of the screen, and Warpzone Drifter has players steering an out-of-control car to various points on the screen in a time limit. Unfortunately, both games have frustrating visual design that doesn’t convey necessary information to the player, resulting in frequent, frustrating deaths that sap the fun out of these games. | |||
| Atari Recharged Collection 1 | Compilation / Arcade / 2D Space Shooter / Arcade Brick Breaker | D+ | |
tl;drAtari Recharged Collection 1 is a physical-only Compilation containing the Arcade-style 2D Space Shooter, Asteroids: Recharged, and the Arcade Brick Breaker, Breakout: Recharged. Of the two, Asteroids: Recharged is clearly superior, but that hardly matters because the price of this package is at least 75% higher than getting the digital games separately. Unless you absolutely must get your games in physical form, skip this… and even if you’re a physical-only gamer, you have far better choices for Arcade-style action than this bundle. | |||
| Bridge Race | Arcade | D+ | |
tl;drBridge Race is an Arcade-style game where players compete against AI-controlled opponents to collect bricks of the same color to build out a path to the exit. Unfortunately, the AI opponents are absolute pushovers, there’s no multiplayer, the load times are terrible, and the presentation ranges from bland to incredibly annoying. Don’t waste time or money on this game. | |||
| Caterpillar Royale | Arcade | D+ | |
tl;drCaterpillar Royale is an Arcade-style game that plays much like the classic games Snake and Tron. Unfortunately, while it controls well enough, the actual game mechanics aren’t a true “battle royale” game, and they work poorly for a Snake-style game, with three game modes that are all either broken or boring. Skip this game. | |||
| Chubby Cat | Arcade | D+ | |
tl;drChubby Cat is an Arcade-style game that’s clearly trying to copy the game Cut the Rope, but unfortunately the touchscreen controls are finicky and unreliable, and the gamepad controls are stiff and awkward. What’s more, the game’s physics aren’t working properly, making for inconsistent play. Top this all off with an absurd $10 price tag, and the result is a failed attempt at copying a mobile classic. | |||
| Crowd City | Arcade | D+ | |
tl;drCrowd City is an Arcade-style game where players control a crowd of people running around collecting others to add to your group, trying to have the largest group when the time limit is up. The core gameplay here is decent, but there’s no depth, it’s too repetitive, and too easy, with no multiplayer to keep you playing. You are much better off getting Hole io, which plays similarly but is much better in numerous ways. | |||
| Defend Your Castle | Tower Defense / Arcade | D+ | |
tl;drDefend Your Castle is an Arcade-style Tower Defense game that started out as a Flash web browser game, with players tasked with flicking enemy stickmen into the sky to get rid of them. Unfortunately, this game being playable only in handheld mode, missing multiplayer and motion controls from the earlier WiiWare release, and the core gameplay being repetitive and shallow, all add up to a game that just isn’t worth getting on Nintendo Switch, even if the touchscreen controls are the best way to play this. | |||
| Dragon’s Lair Trilogy | Compilation / Arcade / FMV Game | D+ | |
tl;drDragon’s Lair Trilogy is a trio of “classic” arcade FMV games, though time has not been kind to them. This package works fairly well as a nostalgic look back at a unique trilogy, but the games themselves are nearly unplayable by today’s standards. If you’re looking for fun games to play and not a historical relic, skip this one. | |||
| Halftime Heroes | Arcade / Roguelike | D+ | |
tl;drHalftime Heroes is a “Bullet Heaven” Arcade-style Roguelike that aims for the same sort of gameplay as titles like Vampire Survivors, but fails miserably, with terrible graphics that suffer from multiple issues, abilities and upgrades that seem to have little attachment to your choices, and other issues… all for the same $5 price as Vampire Survivors. As a result, it’s hard to see any reason to bother with this game. | |||
| Home Escape | Arcade / Misc. | D+ | |
tl;drHome Escape is an odd game that has you using motion controls to “save” an abused child by tugging him into the air using a rope. No, it doesn’t make much sense. It’s also ugly, and has fairly simple and repetitive gameplay. However, I give it points for being unique, at least. | |||
| Kitty Rainbow | Platformer / Arcade | D+ | |
tl;drKitty Rainbow is an Arcade-style Platformer that is clearly copying the gameplay of the classic game Rainbow Islands, but it does so extremely poorly, with bad controls, some poorly-conceived gameplay elements, and a presentation that can make important gameplay elements harder to see. Even fans of Rainbow Islands probably shouldn’t bother with this. | |||
| Mighty Mage | Arcade / Roguelike | D+ | |
tl;drMighty Mage is an Arcade-style Roguelike game where players take the role of one of four elemental mages fending off enemies in waves. The core gameplay here is decent enough, but the game is so terribly devoid of depth and variety that you’ll breeze through to the ending within 15 minutes. Don’t bother with this one. | |||
| Nature Puzzle | Arcade | D+ | |
tl;drNature Puzzle is an Arcade-style game that copies the Qix gameplay formula of drawing lines to create shapes to fill in the screen while avoiding enemies. This game even brings some good ideas to this classic gameplay, but then it ruins them with terrible controls and other issues that will result in players repeatedly getting killed due to stuff out of their control. This game had the potential to be so much better, but with these problems I simply cannot recommend this to anyone. | |||
| Pan-Dimensional Conga Combat | Arcade | D+ | |
tl;drPan-Dimensional Conga Combat is an Arcade-style game where players try to take out enemies by catching them in their long snakelike tail. The concept is good, and the soundtrack is excellent, but the gameplay is far too unresponsive and the visuals are far too chaotic in multiplayer. The result is a game that seems like it should be a lot more fun than it actually is. | |||
| Retro Drive: Revamped | Racing / Arcade | D+ | |
tl;drRetro Drive is an Arcade-style Racing game with a wonderful neon aesthetic, a great techno soundtrack, and absolutely horrible controls that make this game excruciating to play. Don’t waste your time or money on this. | |||
| Space Junk Seekers | Arcade | D+ | |
tl;drSpace Junk Seekers is an Arcade-style game where players collect derelict junk floating in space while avoiding drones. It’s a decent premise, but the gameplay is monotonous and pointless, leaving the game far too shallow and dull. Don’t bother with this one. | |||
| Space Lines: A Puzzle Arcade Game | Arcade | D+ | |
tl;drSpace Lines is an Arcade-style game that copies the Qix gameplay formula of drawing lines to create shapes to fill in the screen while avoiding enemies. This game even brings some good ideas to this classic gameplay, but then it ruins them with terrible controls and other issues that will result in players repeatedly getting killed due to stuff out of their control. This game had the potential to be so much better, but with these problems I simply cannot recommend this to anyone. | |||
| Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz HD | 3D Platformer / Arcade | D+ | |
tl;drSuper Monkey Ball Banana Blitz HD is a remaster of the Wii entry in the physics-based 3D Platformer series, stripping out its motion controls and 80% of its multiplayer minigames. The core gameplay here is still good, but it’s hard to enjoy it with an absolutely atrocious camera. The minigames that remain here are all terrible, and despite being woefully feature-poor compared to the original, this game still has an outrageous price tag of $40. Extremely disappointing. | |||
| The Savior’s Gang | Arcade / Misc. | D+ | |
tl;drThe Savior’s Gang is an odd title where you move a mass of people through a series of deathtraps and try to keep as many alive as possible, held loosely together by a tongue-in-cheek religious theme. Unfortunately, the entire thing doesn’t really come together well, it’s riddled with problems on a conceptual level, and it just isn’t fun to play. | |||
| War Titans | Auto-Runner / Arcade | D+ | |
tl;drWar Titans is a game that combines Auto-Runner and Arcade Game elements with gameplay that has you transforming back and forth from a mech to a car on a road filled with enemies. This fun concept is ruined by tedious, repetitive gameplay and horrible loading times. Don’t bother with this disappointment of a game. | |||
| 5 in 1 Classics: Fashion Bubble Mania | Compilation / Arcade / Match-3 Puzzle | D | |
tl;dr5 in 1 Classics: Fashion Bubble Mania is a Compilation containing three bad knock-offs of the classic Arcade game Qix, and two mediocre knockoffs of the classic Match-3 Puzzle Bust-A-Move AKA Puzzle Bobble. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the price of this Compilation is insultingly high, and this publisher has put out another more comprehensive collection at the same price. Do not buy this bundle, it is a rip-off. | |||
| Airport Flight Administrator Simulator & Air Traffic-Sky Airplane Sim Plane Games | Compilation / Arcade | D | |
tl;drAirport Flight Administrator Simulator is an Arcade-style Minigame Collection where players can play one of multiple minigames at least loosely based on airports (in some cases, extremely loosely). This Compilation requires players to use the touchscreen to play, but features terrible touchscreen controls, and there’s no hint of any sort of real progression or scorekeeping here, giving players no reason to play this game after trying out all its minigames. I suggest you do yourself one better and don’t try it at all. | |||
| Arcade Archives Clu Clu Land | Arcade | D | |
tl;drThis is a bit of an odd twist on a Pac-Man-style maze game where players are bouncing around a maze trying to uncover hidden treasure while avoiding enemies. However, what they’ll fight more than anything are the awkward controls that have you turning by spinning around poles on the level. What’s more, the absurd $8 price tag and the ability to play this game on Nintendo Switch Online’s Nintendo Entertainment System app mean there is very little reason to bother with this release. | |||
| Arcade Archives Ice Climber | Platformer / Arcade | D | |
tl;drWhile this game is probably best known these days for producing the pair of titular characters now featured in the Super Smash Bros. Series, this classic arcade game is stifled by the terrible horizontal movement while jumping that makes the game harder to control than it should be, and this release has an absurd $8 price tag. If you want to play this game, just play it on Nintendo Switch Online’s Nintendo Entertainment System app. | |||
| Arcade Archives Sky Skipper | Arcade | D | |
tl;drSky Skipper is an Arcade-style game where players must rescue a kingdom’s inhabitants from apes using a biplane. This is a rare release of an early Nintendo game, and it has some unique ideas, but “rare” and “unique” don’t translate to “good”, and unless you’re a collector, you’ll want to skip this one. | |||
| Arcade Archives Vs. Balloon Fight | Arcade / Platformer | D | |
tl;drThis game was clearly Nintendo’s attempt to copy the Atari classic Joust, but it has aged poorly, and this release is overpriced and lacks features found in other versions. Unless you need to own this game, just play the version on the Nintendo Switch Online app instead. | |||
| Explosive Jake | Top-Down Action / Arcade | D | |
tl;drExplosive Jake is a low-effort unimaginative Bomberman clone with slow pacing, poor controls, and no multiplayer. Don’t waste your time or money on this. | |||
| Fashion Friends | Arcade | D | |
tl;drFashion Friends is an Arcade-style game that copies the Qix gameplay formula of drawing lines to create shapes to fill in the screen and reveal the girls’ outfits while avoiding enemies. This game even brings some good ideas to this classic gameplay, but then it ruins them with terrible controls and other issues that will result in players repeatedly getting killed due to stuff out of their control. This game had the potential to be so much better, but with these problems I simply cannot recommend this to anyone. | |||
| Fashion Girls | Arcade | D | |
tl;drFashion Girls is an Arcade-style game that copies the Qix gameplay formula of drawing lines to create shapes to fill in the screen and reveal the girls’ outfits while avoiding enemies. This game even brings some good ideas to this classic gameplay, but then it ruins them with terrible controls and other issues that will result in players repeatedly getting killed due to stuff out of their control. This game had the potential to be so much better, but with these problems I simply cannot recommend this to anyone. | |||
| Fashion Princess | Arcade | D | |
tl;drFashion Princess is an Arcade-style game that copies the Qix gameplay formula of drawing lines to create shapes to fill in the screen and reveal the girls’ outfits while avoiding enemies. This game even brings some good ideas to this classic gameplay, but then it ruins them with terrible controls and other issues that will result in players repeatedly getting killed due to stuff out of their control. This game had the potential to be so much better, but with these problems I simply cannot recommend this to anyone. | |||
| Foot Clinic | Arcade / Simulation | D | |
tl;drFoot Clinic is an Arcade-style Simulation game players take the role of a practitioner in a combination beauty salon and medical care office for treating various foot maladies. There’s an odd sense of humor in this game, and it could have built on that to make something interesting, but the game lacks any sort of consequences or fail states, making the whole thing a snooze-fest. Skip this one. | |||
| Gem Crash | Arcade | D | |
tl;drGem Crash is an Arcade-style game similar to a Brick Breaker, where players try to line up shots with a bouncing ball by rotating the stage. It’s a clever premise, but the unpredictable bouncing of the ball making playing this game horribly difficult, and the unforgiving time limits will only lead you to frustration. This game is now delisted, so you’ll just have to take my word for it that you’re not missing much. | |||
| Gliding Square | Arcade | D | |
tl;drGliding Square is an Arcade-style game where you try to pilot a triangle to an exit. Unfortunately, the gameplay and presentation are absurdly simple, and the only challenge comes from the game’s terrible controls. Skip this one. | |||
| Gun Skaters | Top-Down Action / Arcade | D | |
tl;drGun Skaters is a multiplayer-focused Top-Down Action game where players shoot at each other while wildly moving around on skates. This game controls poorly, has a terrible lack of content, has empty online servers… in short, this game gets a lot wrong and very little right. Skip it. | |||
| Hexagravity | Arcade / Platformer | D | |
tl;drHexagravity is a simple Arcade-style Platformer where you’re jumping up an infinite tower of platforms. Unfortunately, movement in this game is frustrating for multiple reasons, and the way the platforms are displayed is unnecessarily confusing. This game isn’t worth even its low asking price. | |||
| Hidden Gems: Volume One | Compilation / Arcade | D | |
tl;drHidden Gems: Volume One is a Compilation of four mostly Arcade-style games from the Commodore 64 platform: Gilligan’s Gold, Horace Goes Skiing, Mutant Monty, and N.O.M.A.D.. All four of these games are terrible and not worth your time or money. Don’t buy this Compilation. | |||
| Hotel Hustle | Arcade | D | |
tl;drHotel Hustle is an Arcade-style game where players take the roles of anthropomorphic racoons cleaning and receiving guests at a hotel. The core formula here is similar to games like Overcooked, but this game is just tedious, lacking any meaningful player choice, poorly communicating information to the player, and lacking anything I would call “fun”. Don’t bother with this one. | |||
| Just Glide | Arcade | D | |
tl;drJust Glide is a One-Button Mobile-Style Arcade Game that plays like Flappy Bird. Unfortunately, it suffers from repetitive game design and camera issues that make it hard to judge where obstacles are. It may be a game that’s dirt cheap, but you get what you pay for. | |||
| Martian Panic | Arcade | D | |
tl;drMartian Panic is a Shooting Gallery game that uses the Joy-Con’s motion-sensing capability (with or without the physical release’s bundled “blaster” accessory) to empower players to shoot aliens in a family-friendly B-movie-inspired setting. Unfortunately, the motion controls are so terrible you’ll struggle to hit anything, and the game suffers from horrendously bad slowdown. At the very least the blaster accessory is kinda’ cool, but it’s absolutely not worth anywhere close to the $30 price tag. Skip this gimmicky mess. | |||
| Miners Races | Arcade | D | |
tl;drMiners Races is a game that seeks to combine the core gameplay of the classic game Boulder Dash with an endlessly-scrolling Arcade-style element. Unfortunately, this game is far too shallow and one-note to hold your attention. Even the bargain bin price doesn’t make this game worth trying. | |||
| Reaper Survivors | Arcade | D | |
tl;drReaper Survivors is an Arcade-style game where players fight as a Grim Reaper fending off enemies with gameplay designed to be similar to Vampire Survivors, but it’s simply nowhere near as well-designed or enjoyable, and why would you ever get this when you can have the far superior game this is copying at the same price? My suggestion: don’t. | |||
| Snaky Snakes | Arcade | D | |
tl;drSnaky Snakes is an Arcade-style game that’s a version of the classic game Snake, but it does nothing interesting with that well-worn game formula, or even do it well. In short, it’s a terrible take on an extremely old game that’s overpriced. Don’t buy it. | |||
| Stickman: Far East Battle | Arcade | D | |
tl;drStickman: Far East Battle is an Arcade-style game where players control a stick figure throwing spears at attacking stick figures. Unfortunately, the controls are terrible, the game hobbles progression in frustrating ways, and the game will not play in docked mode for no good reason. Skip this game. | |||
| Sticky Hands | Arcade / Boxing | D | |
tl;drSticky Hands is a game that’s half a physics-based Arcade-style game, and half a simple Boxing game… and neither half is good. Shallow, repetitive, and tedious, this is a game you should keep your hands off of. | |||
| Super Bomberman R | Arcade / Party Game | D | |
tl;drSuper Bomberman R is the latest in a long-running series of Arcade/Party games. However, the game is plagued with problems, like laggy online play, a lack of options, and a visual presentation that detracts from the gameplay. Yet its biggest flaw is that three years later, and even with all of these problems, they’re still trying to charge you $50 for this thing when it’s debatable if it’s worth one-tenth of that price. Do not waste your money on this game. | |||
| Super Jagger Bomb | Platformer / Arcade | D | |
tl;drSuper Jagger Bomb is a family-friendly Arcade-style Platformer directly inspired by the Bomb Jack series, and as such it features many of that series’ problems, such as poor Platforming. Add to that an ugly, repetitive, cheap-looking presentation and you have a game that’s simply not worth playing. | |||
| Timber Tennis Versus | Sports (Tennis) / Arcade | D | |
tl;drTimber Tennis Versus is an Arcade-style Tennis game where players move back and forth across five columns to automatically hit the ball. The gameplay here is shallow and frustrating, and the presentation is ugly and annoying. Don’t bother. | |||
| Wondershot | Arcade / Party Game | D | |
tl;drWondershot is an Arcade-Style Party game where up to four players shoot arrows at each other, and then have to go run after those arrows when they miss. Which can work (and does in Towerfall), but here the controls are wonky and every single shot can be one that requires you to go running after another weapon. Don’t bother with this one. | |||
| World Class Champion Soccer | Arcade / Sports (Soccer) | D | |
tl;drWorld Class Champion Soccer is a pair of Soccer-themed Arcade-style minigames that forces you to play the game using a touchscreen. The visuals are ugly, neither of the games are good, and the game forces you to wait for other players to join even though it’s entirely a single-player game. Do not buy this deflated joke of a game. | |||
| 2in1 – Application Driver and Serial Killer / Sniper | Compilation / Arcade | D- | |
tl;dr2in1 – Application Driver and Serial Killer / Sniper presents players with two games that both have players trying to kill as many innocent people as possible. While there may have been some potential for chaotic fun here, that potential is killed by extremely shallow gameplay, poor performance, and the overwhelming feeling that this is two woefully incomplete concepts being sold as a game. Do not be fooled into buying this. | |||
| Arcade Archives Kurikinton | Action-Platformer / Arcade | D- | |
tl;drKurikinton is an Arcade-style Action-Platformer with some nice character designs, but little else that’s worthwhile. This is a poorly-made repetitive slog, and I do not recommend it. | |||
| Bounce House | Arcade | D- | |
tl;drBounce House is an Arcade-style game where players bounce around on inflatable arenas trying to slam down to eject out AI-controlled characters. It’s not a bad premise, but it is absolutely ruined by a large list of problems. Horrible framerate issues, simple brain-dead gameplay, mindless AI, a complete lack of options and content, no multiplayer… this game is an absolute mess, and even at the low price of $1, this game is not worth it. | |||
| Bugby | Arcade | D- | |
tl;drBugby is an Arcade-style game where players control some sort of bug who must dodge up and down to avoid computer chips. This game is ugly, shallow, repetitive, controls poorly, and has atrociously bad hit detection. Do not catch this bug. | |||
| Catlord | Top-Down Arcade | D- | |
tl;drCatlord is a Top-Down Arcade-style game that is a pretty pathetic attempt to try to cash in on the popularity of “Bullet Heaven”-style games like Vampire Survivors without having any sort of understanding of what makes those games work. Not only is this a terrible copycat game, but it is also one that is priced at three times what Vampire Survivors sells for. This game’s creators are counting on you being a mindless fool they can trick into giving them money. Don’t. | |||
| Doctor Hospital: Hypochondriac Simulator | Arcade | D- | |
tl;drDoctor Hospital is an Arcade-style game where players are trying to lie their way through a hospital visit, trying to respond to rapid-fire questions while keeping their answers consistent. It’s a fun concept that’s absolutely ruined by poorly-crafted gameplay with an overly-zealous timer and self-destructive controls. Not even worth the small $3 price tag. | |||
| Draw Shooter | Arcade | D- | |
tl;drDraw Shooter is an Arcade-style game that has you drawing shapes that shoot out toward people standing on islands, with your goal being to knock them off. This game looks and sounds ugly, it’s repetitive, it’s shallow, and it is far too easy. Don’t buy this one. | |||
| High Cars | Stunt Driving / Arcade | D- | |
tl;drHigh Cars is an Arcade-style Driving Game where players try to drive their car through a stunt course suspended high in the air. The concept is good, and the $1 price tag is tempting, but the game seems cheaply slapped-together and the driving controls are terrible. Even at this low price, this game is not worth it. | |||
| Humans vs Tigers | Arcade | D- | |
tl;drHumans vs Tigers is an Arcade-style game that has you collecting humans from cages along a linear path while avoiding traps, aiming to have enough humans still alive to take on a giant neon tiger at the end of the path. Unfortunately, the graphics are terrible, everything seems pieced together in a way that makes little sense, and the gameplay is boring, repetitive, and just overall pointless. Avoid it. | |||
| PunchMan Online | Arcade | D- | |
tl;drPunchMan Online is a free-to-play online-focused Arcade-style game where players try to punch each other off of islands. Unfortunately, the game is unnecessarily onerous to even start playing, the action is tedious, the graphics are terrible, the performance is abysmal, there’s a huge lack of content, the online lobbies have barely any players, there’s little depth, and the game just overall seems amateurishly made. If you want a free online multiplayer game to play on Nintendo Switch, you have many, many better choices than this. | |||
| Redden: 100denarii | Arcade | D- | |
tl;drRedden: is an Arcade-style game where players guide a projectile to its target. Unfortunately, what would have been a stylish presentation is shattered by unintentionally silly elements, and the gameplay is ruined by horrible hit detection and poor control. This could have been a solid mix of style and simple gameplay, but instead it’s an embarrassment. Skip it. | |||
| Redneck Skeet Shooting | Arcade | D- | |
tl;drRedneck Skeet Shooting is an Arcade-style game that is just as awful as you probably think it is. Terrible busted controls, overly simple gameplay, and slow-as molasses game progression make for a torturous experience that’s not worth getting. | |||

tl;drRocket Strike: Deep Space is an Arcade-style game that has you navigating obstacle courses using a rocket that’s miserable to control and explodes upon the slightest impact. This game isn’t fun, it’s just tedious and frustrating. Skip it. | |||
| Sega Ages Ichidant-R | Arcade / Minigame Collection | D- | |
tl;drIchidant-R is a Minigame Collection originally released to Japanese arcades in 1994, with this release marking the game’s first time being sold in America. Unfortunately, with only 20 minigames, and many of those games variations on memorization and pattern-recognition games, there’s not much of interest here to anyone other than a diehard Sega collector. | |||
| Shipped | Party Game / Arcade | D- | |
tl;drShipped is a simple Party Game that has players navigating through hex-based island to pick up ammo crates and shoot one another. It’s a pretty dull and straightforward premise, but this game makes it worse by having horrible controls. Don’t bother with it. | |||
| Smashy Cannon | Arcade | D- | |
tl;drSmashy Cannon is an Arcade-style game where players aim a cannon at targets while trying to miss signs with an X on them. This game is like a much worse version of a Mario Party minigame. It’s ugly, brain-dead simple, repetitive, lazy, and even if it amuses you for a minute or two, you’ll soon move on and have no desire to ever play this again. It’s not even worth its $1 price tag. | |||
| Survive Undead Rush | Arcade / 2-Stick Shooter | D- | |
tl;drSurvive Undead Rush is an Arcade-style game with 2-Stick Shooter elements where you fight off hordes of zombies. It’s boring, dull, and repetitive, with pretty much nothing interesting going on here. Skip it. | |||
| Tiny Derby | Arcade / Racing (Misc.) / Puzzle | D- | |
tl;drTiny Derby is a mobile-style Arcade game with Racing and Puzzle elements that has players trying to help their yellow square win a foot race against other squares by placing power-up and power-down items on the track. It’s an interesting idea made mediocre by a lack of depth and variety, then made outright bad due to terrible game design and controls. Don’t bother with this one. | |||
| Waku Waku Sweets | Arcade | D- | |
tl;drWaku Waku Sweets is an Arcade-style game in the vein of the Cooking Mama series. The presentation here is adorable and inviting, but the gameplay is absolutely terrible, with controls that basically do everything for you, leaving zero challenge. As a result, there’s no reason to play this game. Skip it. | |||
| 3D Arcade Fishing | Sports (Fishing) / Arcade | F | |
tl;dr3D Arcade Fishing is a Fishing game so simple it’s outright boring, poorly-made and ugly, and overpriced to boot. You have multiple better options than this on Nintendo Switch. | |||
| Arcade Archives The Tower of Druaga | Top-Down Arcade | F | |
tl;drThe Tower of Druaga is an Arcade-style maze game that is absurdly slow-paced. This game is an absolute drag. What’s worse, this release charging $8 for this game is a total rip-off when you get this game and 11 others in Namco Museum Arcade Pac. If you want this game, just get that bundle instead. | |||
| Corpse Killer – 25th Anniversary Edition | Shooting Gallery / FMV Game | F | |
tl;drCorpse Killer is a remaster of a classic Sega CD Shooting Gallery FMV Game. Well, except replace “classic” with “absolutely terrible”, and “remaster” with “botched attempt at modernization”. And then replace any thought of buying this game with the money it would have cost you to do so, because that money is far, far more valuable. | |||
| Cubic Run | Arcade | F | |
tl;drCubic Run is an Arcade-style game that has players sliding around a cube in a corridor avoiding oncoming obstacles. When it works, the core gameplay here is simple but entertaining. | Draw and Go! | Arcade | F | |
tl;drDraw and Go! is an Arcade-style game where players use the touchscreen to draw lines that place little blue guys who push a bar while an opposing AI player does the same. Unfortunately, this game is stupidly-simple, tedious, boring, poorly-made, with a bland and uninteresting presentation. Do not get this. | |||
| Eggy Party | Arcade / 3D Platformer | F | |
tl;drEggy Party is a free-to-play, online-only, multiplayer-focused Arcade-style 3D Platformer that is clearly trying to copy the Fall Guys formula. Unfortunately, while this game’s performance was always horrible, in the time since my original review it has become outright unplayable. Do not waste time downloading this absolute disaster of a game. | |||
| Erogods: Olympus | Arcade | F | |
tl;drErogods: Olympus is an Arcade-style minigame collection where players play through a handful of absolutely awful minigames for the privilege of seeing amateurishly-drawn Greek goddesses giggle in a bikini. It’s not enticing enough to be worth playing for the titillation, but you’ll still feel gross playing it, and there’s not a single redeeming quality in the minigames. This game has since been removed from the eShop, and I have no idea why, but we are all better off now that it’s gone. | |||
| Fashion Gals: 3 in 1 Bundle! | Compilation / Arcade | F | |
tl;drFashion Gals: 3 in 1 Bundle! is a Compilation containing Fashion Friends, Fashion Girls, and Fashion Princess, three Arcade-style fashion-themed games with gameplay styled like the classic game Qix. However, these are terrible copycats, the bundle doesn’t really provide any savings, and this same publisher has other bundles with more games for a lower price. There is no reason you should buy this waste of money. | |||
| Fly the Bird | Arcade / On-Rails Flight Sim | F | |
tl;drFly the Bird is an Arcade-style On-Rails Flight Sim that has you flying a bird through rings. The presentation is decent, and there was some potential here for a nice, trance-like experience. Unfortunately, that is absolutely ruined by the game ramping up its speed so quickly that it becomes virtually unplayable within a minute of firing it up. Don’t waste your time with this one. | |||
| Kitty Maestro | Arcade / Music-Rhythm | F | |
tl;drKitty Maestro is an Arcade game with Music-Rhythm elements that looks ugly, sounds terrible, plays poorly, and all around reeks of low effort. Do not play this game. | |||
| Overheat: Kitchen Chaos | Arcade / Party Game | F | |
tl;drOverheat is a co-op focused Arcade-style Party Game that copies everything it does from Overcooked, and does so very, very badly. Even the menus and tutorial in this game are broken. Do not spend a single cent on this scam of a game. | |||
| Pets No More | Arcade / Sports (Pong) | F | |
tl;drPets No More is a Pong-style Arcade game featuring zombie pets. While the presentation may hold appeal for some players, the gameplay here is absolutely broken, with terrible physics, poor controls, horrendous input lag, and multiple other issues that sap the fun out of a simple game. Even if you’re just looking for some simple, dumb multiplayer fun, this game is not worth your time or money. | |||
| Pizza Maker | Arcade | F | |
tl;drPizza Maker is an Arcade-style game where you custom-make Pizzas for customers, but this is an absolute shambles of a game that’s incomplete, buggy, and poorly-designed. This undercooked slop is far beyond unpalatable, and the chef responsible needs to be reported to the health inspector. | |||
| Slash Ninja | Arcade | F | |
tl;drSlash Ninja is an Arcade-style game where players use Joy-Con motion controls to slash a sword at food while avoiding explosives, with gameplay clearly copying the classic game Fruit Ninja. | Spell Casting: Purrfectly Portable Edition | Arcade | F | |
tl;drSpell Casting is a handheld-only Arcade-style game that has players using the touchscreen to trace lines on-screen to have their cat magician student perform spells. Unfortunately, the controls here are so broken that the game will frequently fail you even if you painstakingly stay on the line, and success doesn’t feel magical in any way – it only brings more frustrating work. Stay away from this magician, it’s a fraud. | |||
| Wander Hero | Card RPG / Arcade | N/A (F) | |
tl;drWander Hero is a game that combines Card RPG gameplay with a game mechanic that has you flicking discs representing your character to ricochet off enemies to attack them. It’s a really clever gameplay concept, but unfortunately, this game requires players to use the touchscreen for combat, but then makes most of the game’s text so tiny on the screen that it’s unplayable whether you play it docked or in handheld mode. There may be a great game hidden under this issue, but if there is I cannot play it. | |||
